No 3G/4G for Google Glass

Google Glass will not have a cellular data connection, at least initially, meaning wearers of the augmented reality system will need to rely on WiFi or tethering to get online. The headset demonstrated at Google IO yesterday includes only WiFi and Bluetooth technologies, not 3G or 4G despite early rumors, with senior industrial designer on the Google Glass project Isabelle Olsson confirming to ABC News that users out of hotspot range will need to tether to their smartphone for WWAN access. Scientists create wireless connection capable of 2.5 terabits per second

American and Israeli scientists have developed a new system of wirelessly transmitting data using twisted beams of light that could produce a theoretical throughput of 2.5 terabits of data per second. For perspective, that's more than 8,000 times faster than Verizon's fastest home Internet connection known as FiOS, which boasts 300Mbps. Yesterday rumored pricing emerged for Microsoft’s new Surface tablets, with the ARM-based Windows RT variant reportedly aiming for $599, while the Intel-based Windows 8 Pro version would cost around $799. Last week, the U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office reopened its Street View privacy investigation following the FCC’s findings in the United States. In a letter penned to Google, the ICO believes it was misled, with Google stating at the time that it wasn’t a deliberate data collection attempt and that no engineers had knowledge of the issue. Virgin lists WiFi enabled Tube stations

Yesterday the BBC took a look at the Virgin Media WiFi hotspots that are being rolled out across the Tube network in London. The WiFi hotspots would be made available to everyone during the Olympics, with access being charged for later on. Sensor uses WiFi and Bluetooth to detect pedestrians

Trying to keep track of large numbers of people can be tricky, but new technology could leverage the smartphones that people carry with them. A new sensor designed by Libelium is able to detect WiFi and Bluetooth wireless signals, which are then picked up by a multiprotocol router in order to calculate the number of bodies in an area.
