We kicked off the week with our review of the Sony VAIO P, the company’s “don’t call it a netbook” companion ultraportable.  It’s interesting to contrast it with Acer’s just-confirmed 10-inch Aspire One, which will likely offer greater performance at less than half the price.  Elsewhere, Sanyo took the wraps off of their 2009 Xacti camcorder range, including a very tempting 1080p 60fps model, and HTC announced the Touch Cruise smartphone with an integrated GPS-tagged memory app.  In other smartphone news, everyone got surprisingly agitated about President Obama’s super-secret messaging phone.

palm pre iphone 3gThings are traditionally quiet in the tech world the week following CES, but we’ve seen our fair share of intrigue over the past seven days.  Biggest news, in terms of share impact at least, is Steve Jobs’ surprise leave-of-absence due to “health concerns”, which has managed to overshadow both the teased redsn0w iPod touch 2G Jailbreak and rumors that the upcoming Mac mini refresh will use NVIDIA’s Ion chipset.

In cellphones, it looks like the Helio Ocean 2 is almost ready to ship, but it could be too little, too late now that the Palm Pre is catching all the headlines.  Latest Pre rumor is that Vodafone UK will be picking it up as an exclusive; for all the details on Palm’s new smartphone, check out this round-up post and then head over to Pre Community.

apple macbook pro 17 inch macworld 2009We kicked off the week with our yearly visit to Macworld, finding a slightly subdued show floor but plenty of excitement about Apple’s final keynote address at the conference.  Anticipation was high, with several new products expected to launch; instead, however, the only hardware news was a 17-inch unibody MacBook Pro.  No Mac mini update, no iPhone nano, no new iMac, and certainly no new iTouch tablet.  Phil Schiller attempted to channel some Jobsian enthusiasm over iLife ‘09 and iWork ‘09, which are certainly adept pieces of software, and the price changes for iTunes could shake up the download world a little, but it wasn’t the “going out with a bang” for Macworld that many expected.

After that, it was CES 2009, and the SlashGear team decamped to Las Vegas to cover the best-known consumer electronics show on the calendar.  The impact of the recession has certainly made its mark on CES, with what looked to be a lower attendee turnout and several booth cancellations.  Headline gadgets were also fewer and further between, though there were still a few notable announcements.

We kicked off the week with a review of HP’s MediaSmart EX487 Home Server, but after that brief dalliance with Microsoft it was Apple that caught most of the headlines.  Much of it is rumor, of course, about what will launch at Macworld next week – A new unibody 17-inch MacBook Pro with integrated battery?  A new Mac mini?  An iPod touch HD tablet? – but the Dev Team gave us something more concrete with the release of yellowsn0w.  If you’ve been waiting to unlock your iPhone 3G, now’s your chance.

sony vaio netbookIt’s the final Week in Review of 2008, and unsurprisingly it’s been a relatively quiet week what with the holiday festivities taking priority.  Hopefully you’ve not spent your entire shopping budget on gifts, however, as there are still quite a few interesting gadgets on the horizon.  Notebooks small and large again seized the headlines, with various Sony websites dripping out news regarding the company’s upcoming VAIO netbook.  First a January 9th announcement was promised, then the netbook form-factor confirmed, and finally we’ve got spec details.  At the other end of the scale, more details of Lenovo’s ThinkPad W700ds appeared, while the mobile workstation itself showed up in photos and on video.

Review of the week was ASUS’ Eee Top ET1602 touchscreen nettop, which proved itself quite capable of taking on any doubts over an Atom-based PC and throwing them out.  It’s certainly left us excited about next-year’s models, which are meant to have bigger displays and improved media capabilities.  Meanwhile we’re still playing with Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic Tube; check out our first impressions.

acer aspire one 3gWith just a few weeks until CES 2009, we’ve been seeing hints of what tech will be showing its head at the biggest consumer electronics event of the year.  Unsurprisingly, netbooks are taking top billing, with MSI confirming three of them.  In fact the budget ultraportables are selling so well, they bested the ever-popular iPhone 3G in Summer sales.  Acer are sitting pretty in the top spot, with their latest model – a 3G-integrated Aspire One – launching this weekend.

nokia n971Nokia stole much of the limelight this week, with the announcement of the N97 touchscreen QWERTY smartphone.  Set to take the crown as flagship N-series device when it hits the market next year, make sure to check out our video preview.  Meanwhile, after a few relatively quiet weeks, netbooks and their desk-bound nettop cousins seized headlines, with the HP Mini 1000 getting integrated 3G, Sony’s EVDO/HSPA-packing VAIO netbook peeking out courtesy of the FCC, and the first Qualcomm Snapdragon netbook showing its convertible tablet charms.

It’s been a shorter working week what with Thanksgiving on Thursday, and much of the gadget news has been around what offers, bargains and discounts were on offer at cash-strapped retailers. SlashGear has done its bit to ease your present picking pickle, with the 2008 Holiday Gift Guide. We’ve also had reviews of Sony’s VAIO LV and VAIO RT all-in-one PCs; will you be lucky enough to find one of these monster media machines under your tree next month?

blackberry verizon storm p2 6 vn 480x270Most anticipated news this week was the launch of the BlackBerry Storm on Verizon Wireless, RIM’s first touchscreen handset.  If you’re at all considering the Storm then make sure to check out our two part super-review: part one is here, part two is here.

Meanwhile, Apple released firmware 2.2 for the iPhone, bringing with it Street View and over-the-air podcast downloads among other things.  Check out the full details of the upgrade here.  That release was followed in short order by QuickPwn for v2.2.  What the new firmware didn’t include was MMS messaging, but that might be arriving sooner rather than later if Mobispine have their way.
