Sony Walkman A Series Press Images Leaked

Everyone's favorite legendary name in personal music players, that being the Walkman, has been revealed to be expanding the family with the high-end Sony Walkman A series. UK retailer Play.com has created a placeholder spot for the new series of digital music players, this piece of industrial design looking rather different from all of its predecessors, it having a headphone jack at the bottom, a single thumb-indented Home button in the center bottom on the front, and the entire works looking rather like a smartphone with a large touchscreen taking up the majority of the real-estate. The back of the device has the Walkman "W" with only a smaller version of the text logo near the bottom and a reset button to keep it company - it's lonely there at the back.

Sony MiniDisc Walkman Officially Retired

Sony MiniDisc Walkman Officially Retired

Oh dear god WHY?! My favorite of all formats, the MiniDisk, will be officially shunned by Sony starting in September of 2011. This news comes as a shock to absolutely noone, or at least it should, since this format has been essentially on a downward spiral into obscurity since the 90's when it first started taking a foothold. As I'm sure you've already guessed, the advent of the MP3 being played on the now still gigantic iPod line all but signed a death warrant for this mystical, magical format, and Sony's stopping production of the MiniDisk compatible Walkman will certainly knock in the last nail in the coffin.

Sony cease cassette Walkman manufacture; Soundwave sheds a tear

Handkerchiefs at the ready, people, it's a sad day.  Sony has announced that it is ceasing Japanese sales and production of the cassette Walkman, around 30 years after it first started selling them.  The Sony Walkman TPS-L2 went on sale in Japan on July 1 1979, and while the models have obviously changed since then, Sony only shipped its last batch to retailers in April 2010.

Over half of Sony's 400m overall Walkman sales were cassette models, in fact.  Surprisingly, while official Sony production and distribution is ceasing, that doesn't mean you won't be able to find a new Walkman anywhere in the world.

Sony Beats Apple in Sheer Numbers, Walkman Outsells iPod for One Month

Even in Japan, where Sony's name is synonymous with many different gadgets and pieces of technology, as well as people's lives in general, Apple plays a huge roll. So, when news breaks that Sony has officially managed to outsell Apple in their Personal Media Player line, even for just a month, our ears perk up. According to researchers at BCN, that's exactly what has happened. But, of course, while the news is great for Sony, there's plenty of reasons to think it's a short-term effect.
