Back on March 24 of this year, Vudu‘s offices were burglarized, with the robbers stealing a variety of items, including hard drives. As you can image, those hard drives were full of sensitive data, including information about the service’s customers and account passwords. The theft was kept a secret while law enforcement investigated, but now customers are being urged to reset their passwords.

To make it simple for customers to get information about the theft, Vudu has published a FAQ page on the incident, which you can check out at the via link below. Fortunately, the hard drives that were taken did not have contain the full credit card numbers of customers, but they did include just about all the information identity thieves want to get their hands on.

Says Vudu, their investigation shows that the hard drives taken have their customers’ names, home addresses, email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, and the last four digits of select credit cards. In addition, the hard drives also contain account activity, including encrypted passwords, which Vudu says it believes will make it hard for the thieves to access them, but that it isn’t impossible. Because of this, the company says users should reset their account passwords.

If you use the same password on other websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, or even your bank, you should change them, as well, to ensure all your accounts are safe. Vudu suggests monitoring accounts for user activity from elsewhere. Those who have used credit cards with the service don’t have to worry about their accounts being depleted, however; the service does not store complete credit card numbers. Some users have already been notified about the breach via email, while other users will receive a notification in the near future.

Gadget manufacturers may be the ones taking the limelight here at CES 2013, but retail chains are also making an appearance and announcing some cool new services. Case in point: Walmart just announced an expansion to their disc-to-digital service by bringing it to the comfort of your home, making it easier to convert your physical media.

The new in-home service is powered by video-streaming service VUDU, and it will give users the capability to convert DVD and Blu-ray movies to UltraViolet digital copies. UltraViolet is a free, cloud-based digital library that allows users improved flexibility with how and where they watch movies and TV shows that they’ve purchased.

Walmart is making the process fairly simple as well. Users just need to go to the VUDU website, or open up the desktop app on Windows or Mac, and then search for content that you already own in physical form. You’ll then have a couple of options to choose from: converting a DVD or Blu-ray to digital for $2 each, or upscale a standard-definition DVD to HD for $5 each.

The new service is set to launch sometime in the middle of February, but the VUDU mobile app is available for download in both the iTunes App Store and Google Play. Walmart has announced that it’s giving customers who sign up for a new VUDU account 10 free pre-selected movies when they either sign up for an UltraViolet account or link to an existing account.

Vudu has now announced that it has an app available for users of Android tablets that allows you to stream and rent all the movies and TV shows you want right on your tablet. Like Vudu’s other apps, users can choose from new movie releases and new TV show releases with some titles available before they hit DVD or Blu-ray. The content will stream directly to your Android tablet or it can be downloaded to watch when no networks are available.

The app supports both renting and purchasing of digital content. Users can also use the app access their personal UltraViolet Digital Collection. That means the app will allow you to play back those digital copies many physical Blu-ray and DVD films include when you purchase them at your local store. Vudu is available on just about every platform out there at this point.

The streaming movie service is available on PC, Mac, Xbox 360, PS3, some smart TVs, and some Blu-ray players. Vudu also offers up to $5.99 credit for every new device you activate the service on.

With the rapid growth in media-streaming set-top boxes for televisions, it’s said that more people are using their TVs to watch online videos instead of their computers. Market research firm NPD Group reported that televisions are now the “primary screen for viewing paid and free video streamed from the Web.”

According to their latest survey, 45% of Americans are using their televisions as their primary display for watching online video content, while only 31% said they primarily used their computers to watch online videos. It’s almost a scary statistic if you know that just last year, 48% primarily used computers for online videos while just 33% used televisions.

However, it’s also not too surprising. The growth of different set-top boxes has led to a new revolution when watching online streaming content. Many companies have their own solutions, including Roku, Boxee, Google, and even Apple. Hard drive manufacturers like Western Digital and Seagate also have set-top boxes of their own.

What’s also unsurprising, is that Netflix came out on top as far as the most-used service for watching online content on the television. 40% of consumers use Netflix, while 12% use Hulu Plus, and 4% connect to Vudu. What about you? Have you made the transition to watching online video in the living room instead of on the computer?

Sources claim Walmart has plans to roll out its movie and video streaming service Vudu internationally. Vudu wants to complete more on the global front with Netflix and other players in the TV and movie streaming business. The first stop for Vudu is expected to be Mexico this June according to sources.

The rollout in Mexico would be followed by a broader scale deployment to other countries in Latin America. Rumors claim that is many as 30 Latin American countries could get support for Vudu this year. Vudu is also expected to launch in parts of Europe and Asia later this year.

It hasn’t been that long since Netflix made its international push after being in the United States alone. Vudu will have something working in its favor that competing services haven’t had, which is the ability to push the service in major retail locations. Walmart owns 5000 stores in 26 different countries and has a heavy Latin American presence. A rollout of Vudu in Latin America first makes more sense when you consider the heavy Walmart retail presence in the area.

The D-Link MovieNite will stream from Vudu, Netflix, YouTube, and Pandora, all in 1080p where available. D-link say that the MovieNite has a simple three-stage set up, and ports include HDMI, Ethernet, and a composite audio/video port. The streamer has built in WiFi connectivity.

MovieNite has some additional features: you can stream live video from mydlink network cameras, and you can pull down photos from Picasa in case you want to share your latest vacation snaps with the family. The MovieNite comes with a remote, but there are apps available for iOS and Android that will let you control the streamer via your smartphone or tablet.

The MovieNite will be available at Walmart, online and in retail stores, for $59.99. The media streamer is apparently available right now, so if it sounds like your thing, get ordering.

When you buy a movie from everyone’s favorite mega jumbo giant retailer, you’ll now be given the option of purchasing a digital copy of the film as well. The idea is that customers should think of digital copies as add-ons to their physical disc purchase. The additional fees will be $2 for standard-definition movies and $5 for HD. Either option is available regardless of which format you buy the movie on.

So in other words, for a few extra bucks, in addition to having the satisfaction of owning a physical DVD or Blu-ray Disc, you’ll also be able to watch the movie any time, anywhere through Walmart’s Vudu streaming service. Vudu is a pay-per-view platform that lets users rent or purchase digital copies of movies and TV shows. Walmart EVP John Aden described digital movies as a “complement” to physical discs, not a replacement.

Of course, the downside to this service is that users are them obliged to watch their digital content through Vudu and Vudu alone. That’s not a terrible thing. There are Vudu apps for everything from computers to Internet-connected TVs to Blu-ray players and game consoles. Vudu content is widely accessible, but it’s not a standard. Thus is the problem with digital movie distribution. Videos aren’t as portable as MP3 files, so cloud storage makes sense. But there are many different cloud storage providers in this space.

When Apple started to force a revenue share with any company with an app that required a subscription, many of the companies were not happy. Some just rendered unto Jobs, what belongs to Jobs. Others decided to make a workaround to avoid those extra payments. The first to skirt the Apple system was Amazon with its Kindle iPad service where it offered the services as a web offering rather than an app.

Vudu is now taking a page from the same book and when the Vudu streaming movie service launched for the iPad it was a mobile site optimized for iPad not an app. This lets Vudu offer streaming flicks that are geared to iPad users without having to share subscription and rental fees. The website also streams video to other devices as well.

The site supports connected TVs, Blu-ray players, and game consoles. The other reason that Vudu and parent company Walmart decided to offer a web service rather than an app was that changes and updates could be made as they want without having to wait for Apple to approve or disapprove changes. I would bet that if possible moving forward all the companies that can take to the web rather than the App Store will.

Starting November 24th, all of these devices will get complete access to the Vudu library – that is 4,000+ 1080p movies, all of them streaming, all of them promising to be totally frigging amazing. This system will work something like RedBox, with each title being available for $2 for a two-night rental. Firmware updates are on the way.

Panasonic devices listed already have Panatonic’s IPTV functionality VIERA CAST, and earlier this year they added Netflix, Skype for voice and video calling, Twitter, and Pandora for music. These Blu-ray players seem to be quite outta sight. Edward Lichty, General Manager of VUDU says thusly: “We are proud to partner with Panasonic to offer owners of VIERA CAST-enabled Blu-ray Disc Players access to the industry’s best-in-class streaming movie experience, with immediate access to thousands of titles, including the hottest new releases, all with no subscription required.” Check out the full press release here:

VUDU GOES LIVE ON PANASONIC’S 2010 VIERA CAST-ENABLED BLU-RAY DISC™ PLAYERS

Consumers Gain Instant Streaming Access to VUDU’s Extensive Library of Full HD 1080p Movies Instantly for Rental or Purchase

SECAUCUS, NJ (November 22, 2010) – Panasonic, a leader in Full HD 3D technology and built-in TV web entertainment and movie streaming service, VUDUTM announced that Panasonic’s 2010 line of VIERA CAST™-enabled Blu-ray Disc™ Players1 will offer instant streaming of VUDU’s huge high definition movie library, including more than 4,000 Full HD (1080p) movies, beginning on November 24.

VUDU is a video-on-demand service offering instant streaming (no download time) of movies and TV programs through IPTV-enabled HDTVs and Blu-ray Disc Players with no computer or cable/satellite TV service required, and no subscription or monthly membership fees. VUDU boasts the world’s most extensive library of HD movies from all Hollywood studios and leading independent distributors, and an unmatched new release collection with titles available the same day as the DVD release. The VUDU service also offers a great value to movie renters, with an enormous collection of titles available for only $2 for a two-night rental.

“Connected TV will continue to become an increasingly important feature for consumers and Panasonic is working tirelessly to build upon the already robust entertainment and connectivity experiences our VIERA CAST customers can enjoy,” said Panasonic Corporation of North America Vice President, Merwan Mereby. “The addition of VUDU to our 2010 VIERA CAST offerings gives consumers access to a virtually endless library of TV and High Definition movie content when they want it and instantly streamed into their TV without ever having to leave the couch.”

VUDU is the latest entertainment feature to be added to VIERA CAST, Panasonic’s IPTV functionality. Earlier this year, Panasonic added Netflix, Skype™ voice and video calling2, Twitter3 and Pandora to an already robust list of popular entertainment and information options, including Amazon Video-on-Demand™, You Tube™, Google’s Picasa™ Web Album, FOX Sports4, Bloomberg News and a weather service. Panasonic’s line of VIERA CASTTM-enabled Blu-ray Disc Players allows consumers to turn any flat panel HDTV into an IPTV or connected TV via VIERA CAST. VIERA CAST requires no external box or PC5 and is accessed via a single button on the Blu-ray Disc Player remote control. There is no fee to use the VIERA CAST functionality (some VIERA CAST services such as VUDU, Netflix and Amazon VOD have a separate fee structure). New VUDU customers on VIERA CAST™ will receive a $5.99 credit, enabling them to watch their first HD movie on the service for free.

“Our core mission is to deliver the best selection of movies, at the highest quality possible, directly to the customer’s living room,” said Edward Lichty, General Manager of VUDU. “We are proud to partner with Panasonic to offer owners of VIERA CAST-enabled Blu-ray Disc Players access to the industry’s best-in-class streaming movie experience, with immediate access to thousands of titles, including the hottest new releases, all with no subscription required.”

VUDU has outed its upcoming UI refresh, VUDU 2.0, as well as promising HD video streaming for the PS3 later this month. The former is optimized for HDTVs with wide-aspect screens, and uses a tabbed organization system; meanwhile the latter will include HD, HDX and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, direct to the console.

VUDU says the 2.0 UI will mean quicker, more intuitive navigation for users; they’ll also be able to take advantage of motion controllers they may have lying around, such as the PS3 Move. Support for motion-based PC input devices, such as Gyration’s mice, will be added over time.

VUDU 2.0 also introduces more functionality than just media streaming, including a “social feed” which we’re guessing will include Twitter and Facebook updates, and “enhanced browse and filter capabilities” for finding shows quicker. There’ll also be a new personal recommendations engine.

Since v2.0 is cloud-based, users will automatically get access to the new UI as soon as it’s ready; there’ll be no downloading or installing required. Screenshots in the gallery below.

The word’s out today from the NY Times that that Wal-Mart is set to acquire Vudu, the online movie streaming service in an acquisition set to be worth approximately $100 million. Additional information and the full press release can be found after the break.

Vudu had been known recently for its Vudu Box and Vudu XL service, used to distribute movies over the web via a hybrid peer-to-peer technology, in which they were the first to stream video at 1080p high-def. Wal-Mart is evidently betting that the majority of consumers will gradually move toward the online distribution of media content, leaving DVDs and physical media behind in the dust.

Because DVD sales have declined in recent years, retailers and studios have looked to digital distribution to slide back in line with profits. Wal-Mart, who happens to be the largest DVD retailer in the country, may seem like it has shot itself in the foot with this move. But with digital distribution being an increasingly more economical medium, like the iPad partnership between the NY Times and Apple, this move may very well determine and reestablish their business model for the future.

Walmart Announces Acquisition of Digital Entertainment Provider, VUDU

Company takes next step to enhance home entertainment and information delivery options for consumers

BENTONVILLE, Ark., Feb. 22, 2010 — Walmart announced today a definitive agreement to acquire VUDU, Inc., a leading provider of digital technologies and services that enable the delivery of entertainment content directly to broadband high-definition TVs and Blu-ray players. The deal is expected to close within the next few weeks.

VUDU is a revolutionary service, built into a growing number of broadband-ready TVs and Blu-ray players, that delivers instant access to thousands of movies and TV shows directly through the television. Customers with broadband Internet access and an Internet-ready TV or Blu-ray player can rent or purchase movies, typically in high-definition, without needing a connected computer or cable/satellite service. New movies and features will be added continually, enabling customers to enjoy a product that continues to become more robust long after they have left the store.

“The real winner here is the customer,” said Eduardo Castro-Wright, vice chairman for Walmart. “Combining VUDU’s unique digital technology and service with Walmart’s retail expertise and scale will provide customers with unprecedented access to home entertainment options as they migrate to a digital environment.”

VUDU has licensing agreements with almost every major movie studio and dozens of independent and international distributors to offer approximately 16,000 movies, including the largest 1080p library of video on-demand movies available anywhere. Via their broadband Internet connection, users have the ability to rent or buy titles and begin viewing them instantly.

VUDU will continue developing entertainment and information delivery solutions such as VUDU Apps, a platform that delivers hundreds of streaming Internet applications and services to TVs and Blu-ray players with built-in Internet connectivity. VUDU has partnered with some of the leading names in Internet and media entertainment to offer applications on its platform including Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, The New York Times and The Associated Press.

“We are excited about the opportunity to take our company’s vision to the next level,” said Edward Lichty, VUDU executive vice president. “VUDU’s services and Apps platform will give Walmart a powerful new vehicle to offer customers the content they want in a way that expands the frontier of quality, value and convenience.”

VUDU, based in Santa Clara, Calif., will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Walmart. The company is not disclosing financial terms of the agreement as the acquisition is not material to its first quarter earnings for fiscal year 2011.

In comparison to their huge 2010 LCD range, LG’s new plasma HDTVs are conspicuous by their scarcity: the company have announced a mere eight new sets at CES 2010. Among those six, however, are some impressive sounding beasts and some mighty fine design. LG’s TruSlim Frame models, for instance, the PK550 and PJ350, have bezels just 0.9-inches wide; all of the 2010 sets are around two-inches deep, too, and LG have shaved off considerable weight as well.

Like with the LCDs, LG’s flagship sets fall into the new Infinia series, and there are 720p and 1080p options depending on your resolution preferences. Dual XD Engine technology upscales standard definition content to nigh-on-1080p, while several models also get USB ports for plugging in external storage.

As for the PK950 and PK750 series plasmas, they both get NetCast for Skype, YouTube, Netflix, VUDU, Napster and Yahoo! Widget support, together with DLNA streaming across a network; LG will also sell you their WiFi adapter if you’re not happy with a wired ethernet hook-up. Those really turned off by wires can opt for the Wireless Media Hub, which can beam 1080 Full HD content up to 98 feet.

Again, no prices or specific availability as yet.

Press Release:

LG ELECTRONICS REINFORCES COMMITMENT TO PLASMA HDTVs WITH SLIM, VERSATILE DESIGN, PICTURE-ENHANCING TECHNOLOGY

New Plasmas Punctuated by Slim Bezel Depth, Enhanced Connectivity

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2010 – (Virtual Press Office) – LG Electronics underscored its commitment to the plasma HDTV category with eight new models for 2010, led by the new LG INFINIA series, which represents the best in LG’s design, technology and entertainment options.

Featuring new picture-enhancing technology and lightweight designs in a variety of screen sizes, four new plasma series – the INFINIA PK950 and PK750, as well as the PK550 and PJ350– were introduced today at the International Consumer Electronics Show, (Booth #8205).

Design and Picture Enhancement
LG has completely redesigned its plasma line for 2010, resulting in plasma sets that are slimmer and lighter than ever before. At only around two-inches in depth, the 2010 models are approximately 37 percent thinner than previous models and dramatically lighter. In the most extreme case, the weight of a 60-inch plasma HDTV was reduced by more than 40 percent to a svelte 95 pounds.

LG’s new plasma series includes stunning new designs, such as the single-layer design of the PK750 and PK950, and the “TruSlim Frame” on the PK550 and PJ350 models, which boasts a bezel width of just 0.9-inches. Wireless capability contributes to the freedom of infinite entertainment possibilities.

Setting a new standard in picture quality, the PK750 and PK950 models have achieved THX Display Certification*. These models also feature 600Hz Sub-Field Driving, a protective “Skin Glass,” Dual XD Engine and a TruBlack Filter to provide consumers with superior picture quality in a bright room. The 600Hz Sub-Field Driving improves moving picture response time using a 10 sub-field per frame driving process, ultimately offering consumers a clearer picture.

The Protective Skin Glass system reduces the gap between the outer glass and filter by 70 percent, virtually eliminating double imaging and helping to reduce glare. LG’s exclusive Dual XD Engine facilitates up-conversion of standard definition content to near high-definition quality, so consumers can enjoy improved image quality with everything they watch. It also provides extremely accurate color reproduction. The incorporation of the TruBlack Filter reduces ambient light reflection, providing consumers with better black levels and improving contrast for a sharper and more detailed picture in a bright room.

“Plasma TV technology is still considered the gold standard of picture quality by discerning home theater enthusiasts,” said Tim Alessi, director of product development, LG Electronics USA. “LG’s 2010 plasma line combines new technology, such as the TruBlack Filter and superior color accuracy, with striking new designs that are slimmer, narrower and lighter, demonstrating LG’s commitment to innovation in the plasma category.”

Content and Connectivity
The PK950* and PK750* plasma series boast a connectivity package with a variety of entertainment options including NetCast Entertainment Access™. With this NetCast feature, consumers can access an array of online content options**:
•	Skype™: Newly added in 2010, this allows consumers to make free video and voice calls over the Internet to family members and friends (Separate camera and other equipment needed and sold separately).
•	Netflix™: Updated with Netflix 2.0, consumers can stream thousands of movies without a PC.
•	VUDU™: Allows consumers to instantly buy or rent from an extensive library of movies and TV titles, including a catalog of more than 2,000 high-definition movies – with no monthly fees or additional hardware.
•	YouTube™: Offers the ability to instantly stream millions of Web videos directly from the Internet (without a personal computer).
•	Napster™: Napster subscribers can now enjoy unlimited on-demand streaming music from millions of songs on their NetCast TV.
•	Yahoo! Widget Engine™: Enables access to various applications called TV Widgets that allow viewers to interact with popular Internet services and online media through applications specifically tailored to the needs of the watcher, such as up-to-the minute Yahoo! News, Weather and Finance, and new widgets, including CNBC, CBS and Showtime.

LG Electronics has incorporated the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) technology across the full line of plasma models. This allows consumers to access content stored on other DLNA-certified devices within the home, such as computers, making content options almost limitless.

Providing easy options for connecting to the Internet, in addition to the wired Ethernet jack, all NetCast-enabled sets can also integrate into a wireless home network by using a USB wireless broadband adaptor (sold separately). Both PK950 and PK750 models support multi-media playback from a connected USB device including photos (JPEG), music (MP3) and video (DivX HD).

For greater convenience and flexibility in setup and installation, all LG Plasma series with NetCast offer wireless Full HD 1080p transmission from a “Wireless Media Hub” from up to 98 feet. Connecting source components, such as Blu-ray Disc players, cable or satellite boxes and video games to the media hub enables transmission to a compact receiver adaptor which attaches to the back of the TV, hidden from view. This eliminates the need for individual components to be connected directly to the TV, making for a clean and easy installation and removal of unsightly wires (Media Hub and receiver adaptor sold separately as a package).

Controls
LG’s PK950 series also incorporates a unique “Magic Wand” remote system that provides an immersive interaction with the set. This “Magic” user interface brings together menus, component controls and even embedded games which can be accessed using a simple remote that combines minimal buttons and gestures to control the on-screen activity, mirroring a “Wii-like” experience.

Plasma Expansion
A founding member of the Plasma Display Coalition, LG also introduced two other series of plasmas this week at CES. The PK550 and PJ350 models offer consumers a 1080p and 720p plasma option respectively and do not compromise on features or design. Both series boast LG’s TruSlim Frame, reducing the bezel width to only 0.9 inches, along with a slim 2-inch depth and the protective Skin Glass system for picture quality improvement. This is in addition to the many value-added core features found on virtually all LG HDTV products.

The PK550 Full HD 1080p series (available in 50-and 60-inch class sizes*) features a TruSlim Frame and slim profile for a clean, modern look. It also incorporates 600Hz Sub-Field Driving, Intelligent Sensor technology for energy savings and USB 2.0 for additional content viewing options.

The 720p PJ350 series (available in 42- and 50-inch class sizes*) also offers consumers the TruSlim Frame and slim profile for a clean, modern look, as well as 600Hz Sub-Field Driving in two display sizes. The USB 2.0 feature and three HDMI ports allow consumers to connect to a variety of entertainment devices.

Core Plasma Features
For easy self-calibration, all plasma lines feature LG’s Picture Wizard II technology, which provides on-screen reference points for key picture quality elements, such as black level, color, tint, sharpness and backlight levels. Also included in the new plasma lines are ISFccc calibration options to deliver the level of calibration filmmakers intended viewers to see. Others include:
•	Intelligent Sensor: Automatically calibrates and optimizes brightness, contrast, white balance and color, based on the brightness and color temperature of lighting in the room – thereby saving on energy output in most circumstances.
•	Clear Voice II: An enhancement to Clear Voice, this feature customizes volume settings by 12 distinct voice zoom levels without diminishing other surrounding sounds, helping ensure consumers don’t miss a single line of dialogue during action sequences.
•	AV Mode II: Includes three AV modes preset to optimize picture and sound settings based on Cinema, Sports or Game content which can be easily set with the remote control.

All of LG’s LED models also support DLNA streaming via ethernet, and the company will also happily sell you a USB WiFI dongle so you can cut that network cord. LG’s NetCast sets, meanwhile, will work with the company’s Wireless Media Hub, capable of streaming 1080p up to 98 feet; again, you’ll need to buy that separately.

The LE9500 also gets LG’s “magic wand” remote, which responds to movement and gestures, and various models have USB ports for playing digital content from attached storage and PMPs. No pricing or availability for any of the sets at present.

LG ELECTRONICS REDEFINES HOME ENTERTAINMENT EXPECTATIONS WITH BROAD LINE OF STUNNING, SLIM LED AND LCD HDTVs

New LED Technology Combined with Local Dimming Enhances Picture Quality, Black Levels and Utilizes Less Power

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 6, 2010 – (Virtual Press Office) – INFINIA, an innovative new family of LED LCD HDTVs from LG Electronics that delivers “freedom through infinite possibilities,” highlights the company’s 2010 lineup of LED LCD HDTVs introduced here today at the International Consumer Electronics Show (Booth #8205).

LG INFINIA HDTVs (the LE9500, LE8500 and LE7500 series) combine a slim design and thin bezel with enhanced connectivity and abundant content options. Leading the way to the ultimate home entertainment experience, the 55- and 47-inch class* LE9500 sets will be LG’s first 3D-ready models available in the United States.

INFINIA is the flagship of LG’s 41-model LED LCD HDTV line – six new series of LED LCD HDTVs and five new series of LCD HDTVs. Leading these introductions are two new LED technologies – Full LED Slim and LED Plus – that provide cutting-edge picture quality. The unique backlight structure on its Full LED Slim models (LE9500 and LE8500) allows for the INFINIA line’s ultra-slim depth without sacrificing picture quality. Together, these features provide consumers with infinite possibilities in home entertainment.

“We’re removing barriers to entertainment with very slim LED LCD TVs that couple wireless connectivity with the most access to online content,” said Peter Reiner, senior vice president, marketing, LG Electronics USA. “With seamless connectivity and limitless content, LG INFINIA is resetting the standards for design and entertainment as LED LCD TVs are expected to grow to more than 20 percent of the market this year.”

“Consumers will no longer have to compromise on picture quality in order to enjoy an ultra-slim design. Together this new Full LED Slim technology and our wireless connectivity options allow consumers to ‘live borderless’ with the ultimate in content access and convenient installation,” Reiner added.

LG’s new Full LED Slim technology elevates picture quality with a slim LED structure that supports detailed local dimming of up to 240 addressable segments (on the 55-inch class LE9500), resulting in an HDTV that provides the deeper black levels and uniform picture quality which typically could not be achieved on an ultra-thin set.

The LE9500 series cabinet depth is only .92 inches with a bezel width of only 8.5mm. LG’s LED Plus technology (available on the LE7500 and LE5500 series), also improves picture quality and energy efficiency by adding a basic local dimming capability of up to 16 addressable segments.

The LE9500, LE8500 and LE7500 were all recognized with CES 2010 Innovations Awards, including the “Best of Innovations” distinction in the Online Audio/Video Content category for the LE9500.

Shattering Expectations
Broadening consumer entertainment options, LG’s latest series of HDTVs affords consumers superior picture quality, advanced energy saving options and flexible access to content-on-demand. LG’s LED LCD HDTVs challenge consumers’ current perceptions of home entertainment by illustrating what’s possible with superior display technology.

LG’s Full LED Slim series (models LE9500 and LE8500) for example, join an elite group of LED LCD HDTVs that have achieved THX Display Certification* – the industry standard for having the correct gamma, luminance, and color temperature. This certification demonstrates that select series of LG HDTVs can recreate the cinema experience at home, making the picture resemble movie theatre quality. To date, LG is the only manufacturer who has attained this designation for LCD TV in the U.S. market. LG is also the first manufacturer to include the “THX Bright Room” setting on its LED LCD HDTVs. This new feature to the THX certification program optimizes the contrast, gamma and other settings for watching movies in rooms with a lot of ambient light.

LG’s exclusive Full LED Slim technology includes detailed local dimming capability, but also enables the LE9500 and LE8500 to achieve a slim depth usually limited to conventional edge-lit models. This unique technology makes it possible for these two models to achieve the picture quality worthy of THX Display Certification and helps minimize the front bezel of the TV. This works with the single, edge-to-edge panel of glass to create a design, perfect for any home environment. Boasting a thin bezel of only 8.5mm, the LE9500 brings advanced technology into the home without being obtrusive. Available in 55-and 47-inch class sizes*, this series also incorporates TruMotion 480Hz for reduced motion blur during fast moving action sequences.

Connectivity
LG’s full line of LED LCD HDTVs ― series LE9500, LE8500, LE7500, LE5500 and LE5400 (in screen sizes 32-inch class and above) ― boast a connectivity package with a variety of entertainment options, including NetCast Entertainment Access™. With NetCast, consumers can access the following content sites for an almost endless array of entertainment options**:
•	Skype™: Newly added in 2010, this allows consumers to make free video and voice calls over the Internet to family members and friends (separate camera and other equipment needed).
•	Netflix™: Updated with Netflix 2.0, consumers can stream thousands of movies without a PC.
•	VUDU™: Allows consumers to instantly buy or rent from an extensive library of movies and TV titles, including a catalog of more than 3,000 high-definition movies – with no monthly fees or additional hardware.
•	YouTube™: Offers the ability to instantly stream millions of Web videos directly from the Internet (without a personal computer).
•	Napster™: Now Napster subscribers can enjoy unlimited on-demand streaming music from millions of songs on their NetCast TV.
•	Yahoo! Widgets™: Enables access to various applications called TV Widgets that allow viewers to interact with popular Internet services and online media through applications specifically tailored to the needs of the watcher, such as up-to-the minute Yahoo! News, Weather and Finance, and new widgets, including CBS, Showtime and CNBC.

LG also has incorporated the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) technology across the full line of LED models. DLNA allows consumers to access content stored on other DLNA-certified devices within the home, such as computers, making content options almost limitless.

Providing easy options for connecting to the Internet, in addition to the wired Ethernet jack, all NetCast-enabled sets can integrate into a wireless home network by using a USB wireless broadband adaptor (sold separately). All models with NetCast also support multi-media playback from a connected USB device including photos (JPEG), music (MP3) and video (DivX HD).

For greater convenience and flexibility in setup and installation, all HDTV series with NetCast also offer wireless Full HD 1080p wireless transmission from a “Wireless Media Hub” from up to 98 feet. Connecting source components, such as Blu-ray players, cable or satellite boxes and video games to the media hub enables transmission to a compact receiver adaptor, which attaches to the back of the TV, hidden from view. This eliminates the need for individual components to be connected directly to the TV, making for a clean and easy installation and removal of the unsightly wires (Media Hub and receiver adaptor sold separately as a package).

Controls
LG’s LE9500 incorporates a unique “Magic Wand” remote system that provides an immersive interaction with the set. This “Magic” user interface brings together menus, component controls and even embedded games, which can be accessed using a simple remote that combines minimal buttons and gestures to control the on-screen activity, mirroring a “Wii-like” experience.

Energy Savings
Understanding consumers’ desire for products that reduce their household energy costs, most of LG’s LED and CCFL HDTVs have a variety of energy-saving features, such as Intelligent Sensor, to automatically calibrate and optimize brightness, contrast, white balance and color, based on the ambient light in the room, saving on energy output under most circumstances. Additionally, ISFccc calibration options allow consumers to work with a professional to set “day” and “night” levels for optimal viewing and brightness levels. All of LG’s 2010 LED LCD series also qualify for ENERGY STAR® 4.0 certification.

In total, LG unveiled six new series of LED LCD HDTV models for consumers – creating a robust HDTV line up of advanced picture quality, wireless technology and diverse screen sizes. Full details on the series are below:

With class sizes ranging from 19- to 60-inches, LG’s LCD HDTV models provide a variety of flat panel options for any room in the home ― most built with LG’s four core technologies:
•	Picture Wizard: Provides consumers with an easy-to-use seven-step calibration process that allows them to change picture settings without hiring an expert.
•	Intelligent Sensor: Automatically calibrates and optimizes brightness, contrast, white balance and color, based on the brightness and color temperature of lighting in the room – thereby saving on energy output in most circumstances. (Excluding LD350 and LD450 series and the 19, 22, 26-inch class LE5300 models)
•	Clear Voice II: An enhancement to Clear Voice, this feature customizes volume settings by 12 distinct voice zoom levels without diminishing other surrounding sounds, helping ensure consumers don’t miss a single line of dialogue during action sequences.

VUDU has appeared at least a few times here, and it looks like they just couldn’t wait to do it again. And while VUDU isn’t a stranger to LG products, it looks like a particular Blu-Ray player is set to get the On-Demand love right now. The LG BD390 is no longer bound by physical media only, as it will soon be able to reach out to VUDU’s huge digital market, and pull down from more than 2,000 available titles, right there on the spot.

“Our goal as a company is to offer the best possible HD movie service to the broadest possible audience,” said Alain Rossmann, CEO of VUDU. “By adding the top-rated LG BD390 Blu-ray player to the lineup of VUDU-enabled products, we’ve made it easier than ever for customers to enjoy the VUDU experience.”

VUDU promotes some hefty features to their service, like instant viewing, where there is no problem with buffering or other delays. Viewers can also fast forward and rewind whenever they want, as well as browse chapters. VUDU delivers its videos with a unique HDX format, which delivers true 1080p resolution. VUDU is also the only on-demand service to offer Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound.

But what’s huge, is the fact that there is no monthly subscription fees, along with purchasing movies, or renting them. Plus, they have the largest HD movie database available, with now over 2,200 titles available, in HD or HDX formatting. New releases are also available the same day as their physical counterparts, which means we are getting closer and closer to not having to venture into our favorite electronics stores. The LG BD390 is available right now, in retailers nationwide, for an estimated price of $399, but the VUDU connectivity will be available later this month via a free upgrade.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 9, 2009 – VUDU, Inc.’s industry-leading on-demand high definition (HD) movie service is now available on the BD390 Network Blu-ray Disc player from LG Electronics, giving consumers a whole new way to access the largest on-demand HD library of Hollywood movies in their living rooms, the company announced today.

VUDU continues to work with top consumer electronics manufacturers to become more accessible to customers who want to rent or buy major Hollywood movies in high definition. The VUDU service, already available on flat-panel HDTVs, uniquely delivers the largest available HD movie library of instantly-viewable movies in 1080p with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound and provides customers with VUDU’s superior user experience for finding and watching movies in high definition.

Some of VUDU’s key features include:
Instant viewing experience: unlike typical Internet and on-demand video streaming, VUDU movies start immediately, and viewers can fast forward, rewind and browse chapters without the delays or the frustration associated with buffering
Highest quality video: VUDU’s unique HDX format delivers true 1080p resolution and TruFilm encoding enhancements, now available for the first time on an instant-start basis
Immersive sound: VUDU is the only on-demand service to deliver Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound at all video quality levels
No monthly fees: customers can instantly buy or rent from VUDU’s extensive library of standard and high definition movie and TV titles without any monthly service charges
Largest HD library anywhere: over 2,200 titles are available in HD or HDX format
New releases: Newly-released titles from all major studios are available the same day as DVD release, typically months before they are available on subscription-based services

LG’s BD390 networked Blu-ray player transforms and personalizes the home theater experience by offering a stellar array of entertainment options. In addition to its broadband capabilities, the BD390 offers exceptional “Full HD” 1080p video performance and exceptional image quality from standard DVDs with 1080p up-scaling via HDMI output. The BD390 is also equipped for easy connection to the home network and has one gigabyte (GB) of built-in memory for BD Live functionality.

Model BD390 with LG’s “NetCast Entertainment Access” feature is available now at nationwide retailers at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $399. VUDU connectivity will be available at the end of the month via a free upgrade.

About VUDU

VUDU have announced that they have partnered with LG to put their on-demand IPTV system into the latter’s HDTVs. Rather than demanding a separate VUDU box, the LG “NetCast” range of TVs will be able to access on-demand rental or purchase of HD and 1080p Full HD titles, with a system that VUDU promise will see no stuttering or buffering delays.

There’s also Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound, instant fast-forward and rewind, together with chapter navigation. So far VUDU offer over 2,000 titles in HD and HDX (1080p) resolution, together with SD films and TV shows.

The update will be rolled out to existing LH50-series and PS80-series internet-connected HDTVs starting from August 2009, as well as being preloaded onto new sets. There’s no monthly rental fee for the VUDU service, and we imagine other IPTV-capable TV manufacturers are already eying up their system for possible inclusion.

Press Release:

VUDU’s Streaming Movie Service Transforms HDTVs into Movie-On-Demand Video Stores

VUDU Launches Unparalleled New Movie Streaming Service For Next Generation Smart TVs

Santa Clara, CA – July 29, 2009, VUDU Inc., a leading provider of on-demand Internet entertainment services today announced its second-generation service platform specifically optimized for Internet capable smart TVs.

“Smart TV’s are part of an exciting new industry trend. VUDU is partnering with leading consumer electronics vendors to embed the new VUDU service directly into the TV, eliminating the expense and hassle of purchasing, installing, or connecting another device to the TV”, said Alain Rossmann, CEO of VUDU.

The new VUDU service delivers a compelling environment for consumers to discover and watch high definition 1080p movies on-demand. The company is also announcing that industry leader LG Electronics will ship new HDTVs that include the new VUDU service.

VUDU customers can instantly buy or rent from the largest library of on-demand high definition movies – including the newest releases from all major Hollywood studios, with no monthly fees. The VUDU’s service uniquely delivers movies in true 1080p high definition and high resolution Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound, setting the industry standard for on-demand HD movies.

“Internet-delivered video to the TV, sans box, is the Holy Grail for what the TV industry today calls ‘over-the-top’ providers, “said Jimmy Schaeffler, Chairman and CSO of The Carmel Group. “I believe VUDU’s widely acknowledged excellence in video quality and user experience is likely to be a key driver for customer adoption of this next generation of smart devices in the living room.”

“With our second generation platform we are pushing the envelope even further by delivering for the first time features such as instant fast forward and rewind, instant start for all movie qualities including HDX, and an even faster and more refined user interface” said Alain Rossmann, CEO of VUDU.

Key VUDU Features:
Instant viewing experience: unlike typical Internet and on-demand video streaming, VUDU movies start immediately, and viewers can fast forward, rewind and browse chapters without the delays or the frustration associated with buffering.
Highest quality on-demand experience: VUDU’s unique HDX format delivers true 1080p resolution, TruFilm picture enhancements, and high resolution Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound
No monthly fees: customers can instantly buy or rent from VUDU’s extensive library of standard and high definition movie and TV titles.
Largest HD library anywhere: over 2,000 titles are available in HD or HDX format.
New releases: Newly released titles from all major studios are available day and date with the DVD release, months before they are typically available on subscription-based services.

The new VUDU Service for smart TVs will make its debut on LG Electronics’ upcoming models of Broadband TVs.

They have just added a bunch of movies from the Disney catalog, allowing people to purchase and download about 60 new titles for expanded entertainment.

The added movies are mostly from Disney’s maturer studios and include movies like No Country for Old Men. However, they are also offering very popular kid’s titles like High School Musical 3. What makes this special is VUDU is apparently the first device that is offering permanent, downloadable versions of Disney movies in HD.

So far, other movie providers can only offers these movies as rentals. The movies will be in 720p and the VUDU HDX formats. This should be interesting to watch, especially since iTunes doesn’t yet allow you to purchase HD movies.

Vudu currently has a library of 14,000 standard definition movies and 1,500 HD movies. What’s cool here is that Vudu will be providing Entone, a regional provider of set-top boxes, with their full feature set. Anything that you could get on the Vudu Box will be available on the service on Entone as well.

A simple software update will make it possible to access the Vudu library. The new Entone boxes will work just like Vudu Box hardware and can even be used to access sites like Flickr and YouTube. Expect a summer release on this one.

No press release, in fact no fanfare at all, but we’re hearing that VUDU have released a minor upgrade for their Netflix streamers that allows users to watch high-definition YouTube content, rather than standard definition. Previously, viewers were given no option to switch between the two formats (if HD was available); now, VUDU automatically prioritizes the high-definition clip.

The update is free and straightforward to install, merely requiring you to update your VUDU box. Alternatively, if the box is set to automatically update, it should install the new software itself. We’re waiting to hear whether you can actively switch between standard and high definition content, but given VUDU users more than likely have a speedy broadband connection (considering the primary use of the box is to download films) it’s probably not an option too many people would actually use.

VUDU added YouTube functionality, along with around 120 other online content services, back in December 2008. The players now have access to Flickr and Picasa photos, to browse and watch free web video from YouTube, to choose on-demand TV shows such as “Today” and ”Anderson Cooper 360″, as well as to stream some HD content from Nova, National Geographic, PBS and others.

[Thanks Andrew!]

VUDU’s XL high-definition media streamer has only been official for a month or so, and already the company has a new version of the device. The VUDU XL2 has the same 1TB storage, 1080p 24fps playback and compatibility with the company’s higher-bitrate HDX format, but it now squashes that down into a narrower, 1U box suitable for rack-mounting.

In fact, the VUDU XL2 is aimed directly at the custom installation market, and won’t be sold directly to users. Features include IP and IR control, 1080i output via component connections, together with the option to route and switch HD signals via mainstream video switchers.

HDX content is higher in quality than standard high-definition downloads, but the downside is the time it takes to arrive on your TV. Unlike rival streaming media systems which begin playing immediately (or after a minimal buffering time), HDX films take 3-5hrs to download, depending on connection speed. The VUDU XL2 will be priced at $1,299, though obviously you’ll have to factor in third-party installation costs.

Just weeks ago words got out that Vudu was testing a new format of HD download with quality equivalent of Blu-Ray, and today the HDX is out officially. The new format encodes video at variable bit-rate of MPEG-4 H.264 format in 1080p at 24 frames per second, and promises to deliver twice the quality of any VOD contents currently available on the market.

The company already have more than 50 films available for the new format at the same price as standard HD titles. Most HD library starts at $4 or lower, and $6 for new releases. But unlike the standard HD format, HDX does not allow instant viewing, and because of its relatively large file size; HDX requires about 3-4 hours to download prior to start watching. Ok, so the wait time blows but does the quality measure up to Blu-ray standard?

A typical Blu-Ray MPEG-4 AVC are compressed at an average bit rate of 20-30 mbps, with peaks over 50mbps is possible. HDX titles are encoded at variable bit rates of 9-9.5 mbps , with peaks of up to 20mbps. On the account of bit rate, HDX is at least half of Blu-ray quality. That’s a tough sell considering the long delivery time, twice as hard if you live in bandwidth-cap’s town like Beaumont, Texas.
