Volvo 2015 V60, S60 and XC60 Drive-E First-Drive

Volvo 2015 V60, S60 and XC60 Drive-E First-Drive

Volvo has high hopes for 2014, glowing from a multi-billion investment after its break-up from Ford, and with a new engine architecture, Drive-E, for its refreshed best-sellers, the S60, V60, and XC60. They're important models for the Swedish car company, together expected to comprise 80-percent of Volvo's sales this year, but what's under the hood is arguably more of a game-changer. We grabbed the keys to all three to see whether a 4-cylinder engine can really deliver the best of a V6, and to see if Volvo stands a chance in coercing Audi buyers to swap their brand loyalties.

Volvo Drive-E: Trying to wean America off its V6 addiction

Volvo already faced a challenge, taking on the big players in automotive post-divorce from Ford, but now it has given itself a second, arguably more difficult one: weaning America off of its big engine addiction. The Swedish car company has taken an unexpected approach with its model year 2015 line-up, the headline engine option being a 2.0-liter four-cylinder where you might have expected to see a V6 or even bigger. Volvo: Wireless car charging works but isn’t ready for primetime

Volvo has completed a wireless charging system trial for EVs, concluding that though the technology works and is particularly convenient, the lack of a common standard means it's not ready for the mass market. The trial, which saw a modified Volvo C30 Electric recharged by embedded induction coils in a wireless base-station, proved that not only does the system work but that it's quick, too, taking the car from zero to fully "fueled" in around 2.5hrs.

Volvo and Geely Auto to get new shared modular vehicle architecture

Volvo doesn't produce the most exciting automobiles in the United States, but most people will recognize the brand. Volvo does have some interesting technology, such as the self-parking car demonstrator we saw earlier this summer. A new brand that's associated with Volvo that most people won't recognize is Geely Auto. This company has tried to break into the US automotive market in the past with no success.

Volvo self-parking car is the valet you don’t pay

Volvo has revealed self-parking tech that allows drivers to drop their car off at a parking garage and have it automatically navigate to a spare space, summoning the vehicle from their smartphone on their return. The system, installed on a Volvo concept car, can not only drive itself to a free location but avoid other cars and pedestrians on the way, without any interaction from the owner.
