Gigabyte M704 UMPC yet another addition to what seemed to be a stale market

First we get hit with the new Asus offering, and now Gigabyte has a new UMPC too, looks like things are popping in the UMPC market again. Sadly it looks like this will, for now, only be available in Taiwan.

But if you are still interested, it has a 1.2GHz VIA Esther ULV C7-M processor, a 7” LED backlit LCD with a 1024x600 resolution, and a 40 or 60GB HDD with Windows Vista. It weighs a mere 780 grams.

Black Friday Notebook Sale

Black Friday Notebook Sale

So, Black Friday (this Friday for those not in the know) is fast approaching and that means that millions of people in the retail industry will seriously consider suicide as a possible alternative to finishing their shift. It also means that there will be tons of stuff on sale for dirt cheap.

A large portion of that stuff will be electronics, computers, home theater equipment, you name it, the US is probably one of, if not the largest markets for consumer electronics and Black Friday is a great excuse to move a few units out the door. One such product that many cost savvy consumers will be looking for is the coveted uber cheap notebook.

Sony VAIO UX490

Sony will be releasing their latest addition to their VAIO UX line here in the US soon. The updates include Vista Business and a new Intel Core 2 Solo processor.

Other than that you will be hit with 48GB of SSD storage, which is probably where most of the $2500 price tag comes from, but should make the battery life better than HDD based models. The new processor operates at 1.2GHz which if I recollect right means you also get a bit of a speed boost.

Hands-on with HTC Shift reveals oddly unpolished Windows Mobile

The lucky lovelies over at pcdebolso.com managed to acquire (let's ask no questions) a pre-production HTC Shift for five days, and proceeded to examine it both from the perspective as a compact, Vista-running UMPC and as a large, Windows Mobile-running PDA.  Unsurprisingly, perhaps, the Shift although impressive doesn't manage to succeed 100% in both categories; what is surprising, though, is that it appears HTC have made some bizarre concessions which in certain cases render the Shift less useful than a far cheaper device.

Ricavision SideShow-based E-Book could launch November

News freshly drizzled onto the pages of Ricavision suggest that their wireless e-ink Home E-Reader is set to launch next month.  Ricavision, who have already made a name for themselves leveraging Windows Sideshow into cordless devices such as remote controls or fridge magnets, saves money on the device by offsetting the processing and rendering duties to your Vista-based PC.  That the squirts pages from the e-book wirelessly to your slim E-Reader.
