Viliv S5 gets iTunes Cover Flow video demo

In case you had any doubt what MIDs are squaring up against, here's the first video demo of the production S5 in action that Viliv chose to send out.  One of their testers has installed iTunes onto his modified Windows XP system and is calling the user experience similar to that of an iPod touch; obviously, though, this is the full iTunes software as you'd find on your desktop.

Viliv S5 Entertainment MID coming March with Haptic feedback

Of the  mobile computing products we saw at CES last month, we're still particularly excited about the Viliv range of UMPCs and entertainment MIDs.  The company's estimates suggested that the S7, S5 and X70 MIDs would land in Spring 2009.  However we now know a few more details, including that the Viliv S5 will have haptic feedback, plus a more specific release window for the handheld.

CES 2009: Viliv S5, S7 and X70 Atom MIDs

Some of the most anticipated devices at CES have been Yukyung's Viliv range of PMPs, UMPCs and MIDs.  The company has three models on show this week, the S5 "Entertainment" MID, the X70 Atom "Communication" MID, and the S7 "Productivity" MID.  The S7, shown here, has a 7-inch WSVGA convertible display, full QWERTY keyboard and either 16GB SSD or 60GB hard-drive.

Ahead of their CES 2009 appearance, more details of the Viliv range from Yukyung Technologies have been emerging.  The S5 MID, which has been promised for early 2009 and boasts 1080p HD-capabilities, integrated 3G and a 4.8-inch touchscreen, has been demonstrating its "cube" GUI, an in-house development intended to make a desktop OS (like Windows XP) more finger- and stylus-friendly on the move.  Also, confirmation of further Viliv devices have been revealed.

A MID that promises in excess of six hours battery life is always going to get attention, and that's just what the Viliv S5 did back at IDF in August.  The 4.8-inch touchscreen device was slated to launch this quarter; courtesy of an interview with Yukyung, the company behind the S5, we now know it's coming in January or February next year.  So, it's late, but is it worth waiting for?  If you want a fanless ultraportable with hardware 1080p HD video acceleration, a Flash 10-based interface and optional GPS and DMB, then the answer is yes.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 34 2008

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 34 2008

Intel have been holding their annual Developers' Forum in San Francisco this week, and quite a few prototypes and commercial products have come out to play. Of the former, most exciting seems to be the UrbanMax Tablet PC concept; of the latter, Viliv's S5 MID and S7 UMPC both promise to crank the netbook market up a gear or two.

That's probably not what Acer want to hear; the company has snipped pricing off of their Aspire One netbook, presumably remembering (only a little late) that the ultraportables are meant to be cheap. Not far from the shelves, Fujitsu's Amilo Mini and Dell's Inspiron 910 continued to leak information, but still no official word from the tongue-tied companies themselves.

After the S5 MID we saw yesterday, Viliv were promising more big news from IDF 2008; it looks like they've delivered, with the S7 UMPC.  Running a range of Atom CPUs, up to 1.8GHz, the S7 has a 7-inch SVGA touchscreen, GPS, internal WiMAX or HSDPA and an internal DMB TV tuner.  It also has a full QWERTY keyboard and up to 9hrs battery life.

The last time Viliv graced these pages it was with their P2 PMP back in 2006; now the company has returned with a Mobile Internet Device (MID), on show at the Intel Developers' Forum.  The Viliv S5 MID has an 800 x 480 4.8-inch touchscreen and uses, unsurprisingly, an Intel Atom processor.  As well as WiFi and Bluetooth, it also has optional 3G HSDPA and WiBro.
