Simulated Moorestown browser test pits Intel against iPad [Video]

Simulated Moorestown browser test pits Intel against iPad [Video]

In among Intel's hyperbole for the Atom Z6xx launch earlier this week were some impressive stats for internet browsing performance, contrasting what users of Moorestown-based MIDs, tablets and smartbooks could expect in comparison with rival devices.  Steve Paine over at UMPC Portal decided he couldn't wait for the first Z6xx demo units, and so set up some browser tests of his own; he locked a Menlow-based Viliv X70 MID to 800MHz and pitted it against the iPad for some real-world surfing.

Viliv X70 UMPC delayed by components shortages

Viliv X70 UMPC delayed by components shortages

Preorders for Viliv MIDs and UMPCs just don't seem to be blessed with the best of luck.  After the Viliv S5 launch brought down importer Dynamism's servers and left many struggling to complete their orders, the launch of the Viliv X70 has been struck by components shortages at the factory.  In an email to those who preordered the 7-inch touchscreen device, Dynamism suggests that "MIDs have been especially popular this year" which surprised components suppliers.

SlashGear Week in Review – Week 24 2009

After Palm's big moment last weekend, Apple once again seized the headlines with their WWDC 2009 keynote on Monday morning.  We showed up to liveblog the whole announcement, expecting a new smartphone, and the company delivered in the shape of the iPhone 3G S - twice the speed, twice the storage, and the same styling as the iPhone 3G - together with a launch date for iPhone OS 3.0.  However, Apple weren't content with just that: they also brought along a new MacBook Pro range complete with integrated batteries; check out our video unboxing and first-impressions.

Viliv X70 and S5 MID video comparison

Attention for the MID platform seems to be increasing every day, and the poster-children of the new ultraportable revolution are Viliv's S5 and X70.  The 4.8-inch S5 paved the way, and now even hitherto-doubtful people seem to be paying attention to the 7-inch X70, not least because of its $599 starting price.  jkOnTheRun's James Kendrick is one of the few people with both Viliv models on hand, and he's been answering questions about the pair in a video which you can see after the cut.
