Steam Hacked, Credit Card Information Theft Possible says Valve

This week Valve Corporation head Gabe Newell has announced that the gaming hub Steam has suffered an attack on their forums which may well have put credit card numbers and other users personal information at risk. The attack apparently went down this Sunday and Valve is currently letting everyone who had any personal info listed at Steam to watch their credit card activity in the near future for possible fraudulent activity. Here after the attack the Steam Forums are closed and will remain closed for the time being while Steam itself will remain operating as normal.

One of the most popular 3rd party modifications of a game in history, Counter-Strike has now been a legitimate stand-alone game series now for almost 10 years. What began as first-person shooter PC game Half-Life was transformed in 1999 to a game of terrorists and counter-terrorists, one side's objective to set and protect a bomb, the other's side to disarm the bomb. Steam faces retail opposition as rival digital distributors eye the market

Steam has made game distribution pleasantly straightforward for PC gamers, but the service is apparently prompting wrath among retailers fearful of its potential for market dominance. According to MCV's sources, UK high-street retailers are telling games publishers to strip Steam from their titles or face a ban from their shelves. "Publishers are creating a monster – we are telling suppliers to stop using Steam in their games" said one unnamed exec at a big-name UK gaming retailer. Read The Full Story

Valve confirm no current Linux Steam plans

Valve has ended speculation over a Linux port of their Steam games system, with marketing VP Doug Lombardi telling GamesIndustry that the company is not working on a version for the open-source platform.  Rumors of the Linux build began in earnest back in May 2010, when several unreleased Steam Linux binaries were discovered; these appeared to be undergoing active development by Valve themselves.
