Up until now, unless you’ve bought a WiFi-enabled camera or an Eye-Fi card, getting photos off of your digital camera usually involves plugging in a USB cable or whipping out the memory card. Spectec want to change all that; they’ve slotted an Alereon UWB radio into their CameraJet Wireless system, with the SD Wi-Jet Card SDU-7200 going into your camera and the USB Wi-Jet Dongle SDU-7500 going into your computer.

The memory card handles not only storage but all the UWB crunching as well, which leaves the digital camera’s processor to do its regular thing. As well as transmitting images to your PC, you can also plug the USB dongle into a display and stream them direct, too.

No word on pricing at this stage, but Spectec says the CameraJet system should hit production in February 2011.

Press Release:

Alereon and Spectec Announce SD CameraJet™ Wireless Ultrawideband Solution

SD and dongle faster than a wire for transferring and streaming media from mobile devices

2011 International CES
LAS VEGAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Alereon, Inc., the technology leader for Ultra Wideband (UWB) ECMA solutions, and Spectec Computer Co. Ltd. a leading provider of SDIO solutions for mobile devices today announced the availability of the Spectec CameraJet™ Wireless Solution that brings new levels of speed and connectivity to the transfer of media from mobile devices. The Spectec solution consists of the SDU-7200 Wi-Jet SD card and the SDU-7500 Wi-Jet USB dongle. Both are powered by the Alereon ECMA and ISO standard AL6000 Ultra Wideband chipset.

“One of the biggest bottlenecks in our new mobile world is moving and viewing data from mobile devices”
The Spectec Wireless CameraJet™ solution is designed to allow digital still camera (DSC) and digital video camcorders (DVC) to quickly and easily wirelessly connect to HDTVs, PCs, digital media adapters and mass storage devices to transfer and view pictures or stream videos without removing the media. Spectec’s innovative design includes a dual-port FLASH memory controller and SD host/device controller which allow the UWB system to access and wirelessly transmit media directly from FLASH memory without using the camera’s processor. Set up is easy; simply insert the SD card into the DSC or DVC SD card slot, plug a small USB dongle in the PC or hard drive and it’s ready to go.

“One of the biggest bottlenecks in our new mobile world is moving and viewing data from mobile devices,” said Eric Broockman, Alereon’s CEO. “Spectec’s innovative SD technology provides the ability to combine the on-chip FLASH controller and the SD host/device controller on a single SD card.”

“We have been looking for an ideal wireless technology to provide users with a fast and simple way to get their media from their mobile devices either to their hard drives or to their personal computers,” said S.T Joung, General Manager of Spectec. “The Alereon solution is fast, easy to use, requires no drivers and gives us superior performance vs. WiFi. For consumers this is a great way to finally wirelessly access your media.”

Availability

The Spectec CameraJet™ solution is sampling now with production in February 2011.

I bet here are lots of you out there like me who have often wished they could peruse those YouTube videos or shows from Hulu on the big screen in the living room rather than on a smaller laptop or desktop computer screen. Alereon has announced a new device at CES that will let you do that without needing wires called the Alereon Laptop to HDTV Extender.

The device uses UWB connectivity to stream video from a 2-inch USB dongle to the TV via an HDMI adapter. The kit supports Windows 7, Vista, XP, and Mac computers. The entire system promises to be up and running on only 5 minutes.

Supported resolution for the device is up to 1680 x 1050 and it can stream 720p HD video up to 30 feet away. The chipset inside the device supports Band Groups 1, 3 and 6 making it capable of operating worldwide. The device will ship to OEMs in Q1 2010.

The ASUS Eee Keyboard saga continues, and we’re beginning to think it’s the company’s version of vaporware. At their latest launch event in London, UK, this week, the Eee Keyboard – which squeezes a nettop and touchscreen into a keyboard form-factor, and was first debuted at CES back in January – was conspicuous by its absence, with ASUS telling Electricpig that the device was still mired in testing; however, ASUS have also been demonstrating their latest version of the Eee Keyboard to NetbookNews, with nary a mention of release delays.

Video demo of latest version after the cut

The new model apparently has a resistive touchscreen panel, and thanks to a Broadcom video processing chip can handle both 720p and 1080p high-definition video. That can either be squirted to an HDTV via HDMI or UWB wireless.

Those specifications – certainly the Broadcom AV-VD904 – fit in with the version of the Eee Keyboard spotted clearing the FCC recently. Our assumption at the time was that a release was imminent, but all that is thrown into confusion with ASUS UK’s comments; as their spokesperson, John Swatton, has said, “there’s no official announcement on when it’s being launched … it could be November, it could be December, it could be January, it could be February.”

We’ve been waiting for the ASUS Eee Keyboard for a very long time, at least that’s how it feels, so it’s good to see some movement happening over at the FCC. They’ve just published the Eee Keyboard’s user manual, together with a whole batch of external, internal and wireless-testing photos. Among the details there’s a fair few shots of the media-centric nettop/keyboard hybid’s UWB (ultrawideband) system.

That couples a transmitter module in the Eee Keyboard itself with a special receiver, the latter having an HDMI port along with power, two USB 2.0 and a single mini-USB connections. This plugs into your HDTV and allows the Eee Keyboard to wirelessly transmit video and audio to the display.

Other specs fall broadly in-line with what we’ve heard previously, which means a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, either 16GB or 32GB of SSD storage and both WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1. Onboard ports include HDMI, VGA, WiFi/UWB antenna (with an included antenna dongle), three USB and audio in/out; it also has integrated stereo speakers and a microphone. Control is via the QWERTY keyboard itself and a 5-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen; there’s also a Broadcom AV-VD904 chipset which allows the Eee Keyboard to output high-definition video.

Still no definitive word on when we can see the ASUS Eee Keyboard on shelves, however, nor for what price.

Dell have finally outed their new flagship business notebook, the Dell Latitude Z 600, a 16-inch machine that’s packed full of wireless technologies. The Latitude Z 600 has a matte-finish 1,600 x 900 display, backlit keyboard, choice of Intel Core 2 Duo 1.4GHz SU9400 or 1.6GHz SU9600 processors, up to 4GB of RAM and up to dual SSD drives for storage, as well as an optional wireless charging stand (around $200 each for the stand and the notebooks’ wireless module) and optional UWB-based wireless dock with USB, DVI and other connections.

The Latitude Z also has a 2-megapixel webcam with autofocus, which can be used to log users in via facial recognition, scan business cards and input details from them automatically into Outlook, and create PDFs by photographing physical documents. A capacitive touch-strip along one side of the keyboard calls up a menu of shortcuts, which Dell call “EdgeTouch”. Of course, there’s also WiFi, Bluetooth and integrated 3G, and the whole thing weighs 4.5lbs. Battery life is tipped at either 4hrs from the 4-cell or 8hrs from the 8-cell pack, though the latter doesn’t fit completely flush with the body of the notebook.

Dell have also given the Latitude Z a quick-start feature, called Latitude ON, which rather than being a simple secondary Linux OS is actually a whole separate ARM-based Linux system living inside the notebook. Kept entirely separate from the main system, it offers speedy access to contacts, Exchange email and the browser.

What the Latitude Z 600 isn’t is cheap. Pricing starts from $1,999 and the notebook is available from today in the US, Canada, select European and Asian countries; however the wireless charging module and dock won’t go on sale until late October.

Zerowire 2.0 combines TZC7200 Ultra Wideband chipset and In-House UltraMIMO signal processing technology to deliver a peak link rate of 480Mbps at ranges greater than 66-feet. Full Video signal supports includes 1080P at 24/30/56/60 fps as well as legacy 480i/p, 720p and 1080i in H.264 video compression with support for sub-frame latency and HDCP. The HDMI 1.3a stamped product will also ensure Tzero compatible with Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) functionality in addition to legacy IR control.

Performance is not what gathers media attentions, forget thousand of dollars from competitions; costs at $50 per unit, Tzero is one of the most cost-effective HDMi wireless solution on the market. I’ll be looking forward to get my demo at CES 2009.

WiQuest fell, the company and analysts believe, for four main reasons. Firstly, theirs was a two-chip solution where manufacturers wanted one. Secondly, it was too expensive, coming in higher than the roughly sub-$5 a piece cost of Bluetooth and WiFi chips that OEMs demand. Thirdly, the transfer speeds simply weren’t up to the “Wireless USB” billing, at just 50MB/s. Finally, power demands were too high for inclusion in ultramobile and smartphone-style devices: 1W in reality, when the concept called for less than 300 milliwatts.

Regulatory hurdles – such as different locations using different UWB frequencies – are also cited, but at the end of the day it seems that customers weren’t willing to dip into their pockets for an add-on with no obvious use. “We were at about a one-percent attach rate in notebooks,” said Todd A. Brown, vice president of worldwide sales at WiQuest, “and [we] needed to be at 5-10 percent and growing.”

A new Ultrabase expansion slice has also been unveiled, compatible with any X200-series notebook, with space for an optical drive (Blu-ray or DVD) or a second hard-drive. It will also charge a second battery.

Lenovo’s upcoming ThinkPad X200t, the Tablet PC version of the ThinkPad X200 ultraportable, has shown up on the FCC website. Although the report is merely certifying the notebook, not testing it – and as such lacks any of the low-res photos we’ve come to love the FCC for – it does confirm that the Tablet PC is in the pipeline and that it will have integrated UWB.

Previous leaks have suggested that the X200t will have a 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo CPU, 1GB of RAM (with a maximum 4GB supported), a 160GB SATA hard-drive and 12.1-inch 1280 x 800 display. It will weigh just 4.17lbs with an 8-cell battery good for up to 7hrs use, run Windows Vista Home Premium and have a/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth and gigabit ethernet.

Lenovo are still yet to confirm the X200t’s existence, but it can only be a matter of time until we see full testing details from the FCC. Suggested pricing for the Tablet has been pegged at around $1,339.

[Thanks John!]
