3M Demoes USB 3.0 Monitor

, Jun 9th 2010 Discuss [1]

Technology is an ever-progressing front, and as we welcome the next batch of great inventions, we also have to take in the minor steps in the same direction as well. Then again, getting a monitor that not only receives its display signal from the next step in Bluetooth tech, but is also powered by it, may not be all that minor at all. Thanks to 3M, you can now safely debate the subject, as they've gone ahead and demoed their first monitor that does just that. Read The Full Story

Nokia has released their second N8 walkthrough video - the first was an overview of Symbian^3 - and topically they're talking about on-device media editing.  Like the iPhone 4, the N8 can be used to piece together video and images on a timeline, complete with transitions and titles, while there's also an onboard photo editor app for cropping, colour adjustments and adding clipart.  Best of all, thanks to USB Host support you'll be able to hook up an external drive to easily transfer off your newly-edited content. Nexus One Used as a USB Host, Thanks to Hack [Video]

, Jun 4th 2010 Discuss [5]

For many users out there, one of the better parts of having a phone powered by Google's Android Operating System, is that with a little tinkering, you can pretty much do whatever you want with it. That's mostly because of the Linux running in its veins, but that's definitely not a bad thing. And while rooting is a great way to get what you want done (as this project clearly demonstrates), it's the results that matter the most. And if you've ever wanted to make your Nexus One a USB host, be happy that it's now possible. And has been done, on video. Read The Full Story

Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex HDD Review

, May 27th 2010 Discuss [6]

In the world of external storage the upgrade path is obvious: slap a bigger drive in your enclosure and wait for people to fill it with media. Seagate’s GoFlex Storage System, however, takes a slightly more complex route; thanks to an array of interchangeable cables individual FreeAgent drives can be used with not only USB, eSATA and other ports, but in a range of media players and docks. Is the flexibility worth putting up with an unusual port? Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

FastMac U-Socket on sale now: $20 for USB charging convenience

, May 24th 2010 Discuss [0]

The FastMac U-Socket combination AC and USB outlet - first spotted back in December 2009 - has finally gone on sale, offering a straightforward way to charge up USB gadgets like smartphones, PMPs and even your iPad without having to reach for the AC adapter.  Priced at $19.95 for those willing to preorder (or $29.95 after that), the outlet only supplies power to the USB ports when there's something plugged in. It's also had a redesign since the prototype first shown, moving the two USB ports to one side of the outlet rather than, as before, flanking either side of them.  That may spoil the symmetry but it also means you'll still be able to plug in a USB even with two reasonably bulky wall-warts taking up the AC slots. , May 3rd 2010 Discuss [6]

Nokia's N8 certainly seems to be creating some hype for the Finnish company, and we can't imagine that's going down too badly at Nokia HQ.  Currently being picked over is the N8's ability to hook up to an external hard drive and access its files - something that we actually knew from the spec sheet back on the day of the N8's launch, since that detailed the USB on-the-go support  - together with rumors that a 32GB N8 is planned together with the 16GB Nokia announced.
