With much sound and fury, the blogosphere and Twitter all respond to Google’s “bombshell” announcement that they’re launching Chrome OS sometime in the 2nd half of 2010 (which I might add is a long time from now). Already, folks who have never seen it, used it or spent five minutes with it are claiming it’s huge threat to Windows. (Oddly, if that’s the case, wouldn’t it also be a threat to Apple and Mac OS, an argument I’ve not seen but perhaps that’s another story).

While it’s early to be dismissive, this is far from a slam-dunk success. It feels more like another way Google is attempting to provoke Microsoft. Something, which Google seems to like to do with increased regularity. (Actually, it feels like Google likes to give Microsoft a smack on the side of the head with a sharp stick form time to time).

amd1Atom has been making its way into the majority of netbook systems and Intel’s success with Atom has triggered AMD to work on its own chip to compete with Atom. AMD has not publicly discussed the upcoming chip much but has shown some indication that the CPU is in the works for quite sometime now.

Leaked information shows that AMD’s UVC (Ultra Value Client) chip will be announced as early as November and will be sold directly to OEM.

The new chips will be paired with 740G platform that AMD recently announced. The 740G features Radeon 2100 GPU with full support for HD decoding and uses SB700 southbridge. The report did not reveal power consumption of the chip and platform.

Deep down, in my geeky heart of hearts, I know the one thing that can turn a good piece of tech into a kick-ass gadget is a big red button.  Thankfully MSI know that too, which is obviously why they’ve added a bright red overclock button to their GeForce N9600GT Diamond graphics card that they demonstrated at its ECOlution press conference in Taipei. When pressed, the graphics core and memory clock speeds are overclocked, and the voltage increased.
