The device you’re about to see is a tiny piece of technology that plugs into the 30-pin port on your iPhone, your iPod Touch, or your iPad. What you’ll get when you connect to the application that comes free from the iTunes App Store is a universal remote for essentially any television-connected device you’ve got in your living room. We’ve got the original release of the VooMote Zapper here, and what you’ll see is only the beginning of your VooMote experience.

To connect your VooMote to your television box (or straight up to your television, as it may be), you’ve only got to select the model from the vast list of devices the VooMote application has pre-configured. If your device is not in the VooMote library, you have only to take the time to connect the buttons on the remote control you use now to the digital remote control you’re about to use on your iPhone. This process can be a bit of a hassle the one time you’ll have to go through it, but once you’re connected, you can go ahead and toss that old remote in the bottom drawer.

          src="http://asset.slashgear.tv/sgplayer.swf"
          width="580"

In the hands-on video above you’ll see in a very general way what it means to have the VooMote Zapper connected to your iPhone 4S. In addition to the Zapper there’s a whole collection of cases that go with the line and match up with its lovely set of color options: Smart gray, blue, green, pink, navy, red, white, or what we’ve got here: black. Each VooMote Zapper has 4 built-in IR transmitters (or what they call “Mini Blasters”) that’ll allow you to change channels from any which direction you can imagine – just so long as you’re in range of the unit in general.

You get a set of several screens with control buttons that you can attach to your television (or game console like the Xbox 360, for example) that, again, will be connected automatically or manually to the functions you’d like them to be connected to. The VooMote Zapper App will also be updated inside 2012 to include TV Guide as well as integration with Facebook and Twitter for sharing – exciting stuff!

You can purchase the VooMote Zapper for $69.99 USD (and the app is free) or the VooMote One (a similar device with basically the same functionality but a slightly different form factor for $99.99 USD – your choice! Then the cases you see in a couple of the photos in the gallery below are coming soon – brightness! Also feel free to check out the app on the iTunes App Store right this second too, totally free – you’ll need the Zapper to do much of anything with it, of course.

Samsung has officially dropped details on its upcoming 2012 upgrade to the Smart TV world with its Samsung Smart Touch Control, complete with touchpad, Edge, and voice control. This controller will work with Samsung’s entire 2012 range of Smart TV units including the ES8000 which will be the first to be working with this remote’s voice recognition engine. Other than that, Samsung TVs, set-top box, and Blu-ray players will all function well with this magic stick.

Touchpad Control

The first and most apparent feature you’re going to experience here is the touchpad, it taking up the top 2/5 of the device and allowing you to move forward with the touch controls you’ve gotten so used to in this forward-thinking mobile environment. You’ll be able to change channels and adjust the volume on your set with a simple swipe of the touchpad, and on-screen browsing will be much easier as the touchpad works as a mouse. Your finger is now the mouse pointer rather than the rather evil point to move we’ve seen from similar sets in the past.

Edge UI

Next is the Edge User Interface, this allowing you to access any of the four main control menus with your touchpad by swiping your finger out to the edge. These four menus are Color/playback, Tools, Hot Key, and History. Your Hot Key aka Short Cut will bring you a programmable action, while the rest should be pretty self-explanatory for you Smart TV users. No need to look at the remote any longer!

Voice Control

With the newest Samsung Smart TV units, you’ll be able to use the Smart Touch Control’s built-in microphone to tell your television what to do. You’ll be able to access your apps, switch channels, and navigate compatible services galore. This system should prove to be rather intuitive as voice recognition and control advances to new heights in our very voice-activated modern world.

Multi-device Control

Finally you’ll be able to cut down on the number of control units you’ll need – just so long as you’ve got all Samsung devices, that is. The Smart Touch Control can be programmed to run with your DVD player and a whole mess of other home entertainment appliances. Your device choosing widget can be found under your Hot Key on the remote, each of your devices then switched quickly and with great ease on-screen. One remote to rule them all.

Pricing and availability for this remote control have not been finalized, but don’t be surprised if we see it within a month around the world. Smart TV 2012 continues on with great fervor. Samsung is bringing the Smart heat in TV!

A bunch of the stuff in your entertainment center probably has has the ability to type for searches and other things. The catch is that most of us lack a remote control that has a keyboard and if you have a bunch of components, you may have a bunch of remotes too. A new device on Kickstarter is aiming to control just about everything with one controller that also has a keyboard.

The controller is called the Bridge and it has a smartphone style keyboard that looks like something off a Blackberry. It also has all the buttons you need for controlling your TV, audio, and video playback. The device is in the development phase right now and that is why it is landing on Kickstarter. The guys behind the device are seeking $50,000 to get the product made and to stores.

The Bridge has buttons on the top for controlling things and looks a lot like a PS3 controller to me. The team has 47 days to go to fund the device making the support pledges end on December 31. Right now, they have 48 backers at $3,855 pledged. The least expensive pledge to actually get yourself a Bridge controller is $65.

If you are an iOS user, we have another new universal remote that you can choose from for controlling your gear. This new offering is from Zero1.tv, the same folks that make the VooMote One we have talked about in the past. The new device is called the VooMote Zapper and it is a better looking device than the older offering.

The Zapper is up for pre-order as of right now and you can get free shipping with that. It will ship by the middle of the month and it will be in retail stores as well. The Zapper plugs into the 30-pin connector on the iOS device. The Zapper is said to be as small as a paperclip.

It works with an app that you download to give you control over hundreds of thousands of devices. The photo has many different colors, but initially only black or white versions will be available. This appears to be a more basic universal remote app with no mention of a guide like other devices offer.

Logitech has announced the Harmony Link, turning your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Android device into a universal remote. Pairing an WiFi-enabled IR blaster dongle and custom apps for each platform, the Harmony Link can replace up to eight remotes and supports macros such as “Watch a Movie” to automatically turn on your HDTV, Blu-ray deck, surround system and – if you have a fancy intelligent lighting rig – dim your lights too. The iPad app also includes personalized, in-app TV listings.

The company in fact previewed the Harmony Link concept all the way back in June 2010, as part of its Google TV offering. This commercial product, however, doesn’t rely on Google TV at all; instead you can use it with any of the preconfigured IR codes for over 5,000 brands Logitech has pre-programmed, or teach it the IR signals of an unknown brand by using the existing remote.

Unfortunately the iPhone/iPod touch and Android apps don’t support the in-app TV listings on the iPad, and there’s no word on whether that will change in the future. You do get a mini IR blaster, however, allowing you to control A/V kit in a cupboard. The Logitech Harmony Link is expected to go on sale in October, priced at $99.99.

The last time I mentioned RedEye was back in April when they unveiled the RedEye Pro back in April. The only catch to the device was that the universal remote app was only offered for iOS. You do still need an iOS device to configure the RedEye and RedEye Pro hardware, but the company has now launched a public beta for the Android app universal remote control. Anyone can download the Android app right now.

The company says that the app will work with any device running Android 1.6 and higher. The software will also work with Android 3.0 tablets as well. The RedEye hardware is able to do all sorts of home automation tasks. This is the first universal remote for the Android platform according to ThinkFlood.

The ability to configure the RedEye devices with Android will come in a later version of the app. For now, ThinkFlood is taking feedback for the Android beta users to improve the product. It’s not clear if the ability to configure the hardware with Android will come in the official final version of the app when it launches or not.

UPDATE: As it turns out, this app is no longer in Beta mode, it’s in production mode and you can grab it on the Android Market now! – Thanks April!

Vizio began taking limited pre-orders for its 8-inch Android tablet back at the start of the month, but now Amazon has got in on the action and they’ve undercut the manufacturer too. There’s no launch date for the Honeycomb slate – Vizio itself was expecting the first shipments to head out on July 18 – but you can stake your claim now for $349.99.

Vizio, meanwhile, is asking $399.99, though they do at least throw in a 16GB microSD card and a nifty little folio case that not only protects the slate but can prop it up on your table. Otherwise it’s the same 8-incher, with the capacitive touchscreen running at 1024 x 768 resolution, WiFi b/g/n and dual cameras.

The most interesting aspect of the Vizio tablet, perhaps, is its ability to be used as a remote control, thanks to an integrated IR emitter. With so many tablets living in the lounge and never actually making it outside the house, having it double as a universal remote – while other tablets demand an aftermarket IR dongle – could help sway buyers in Vizio’s favor. Otherwise there’s an HDMI port for direct connection to an HDTV for playing 1080p HD video.

There are a bunch of universal remote control apps and hardware on the market for your Apple iOS device today. The latest such device comes by way of Griffin Technology and Dijit and is called the Beacon Universal Remote Control System. The device is a hardware and app combo that promises to deliver full control of your home entertainment system using your iOS device. This system will work with your iPod touch, iPad, or iPhone.

The hardware device is a small gadget that sits on your coffee table so you don’t need any accessories hanging off your iPhone or other device. The hardware converts the Bluetooth signals of your iOS device into IR signals that the entertainment system in your living room can understand. The Beacon connects to the Dijit Universal Remote App.

Once the app is installed, the iOS device can then change channels, volume, inputs, program your DVR and more. The app also has a learning feature just in case you have a component that isn’t in the library. The app will also support activities for changing inputs with the press of one digital button. The Beacon is powered by four AA batteries needing no cables and is designed to sit on a coffee table. Beacon is shipping now for $89.99 and can be purchased in Apple Stores.

What we don’t see a bunch of are universal remote controls that run the Android operating system. The Conspin Andi One universal remote is just such an animal.

This universal remote has a big 3.5-inch touchscreen for controlling your home theater gear. It runs the Android 2.1 operating system and it supports apps raising the confusing opportunity to run a universal remote app on your universal remote. The Andi One has an aluminum body.

It can connect to your components via RF, IR, and WiFi and supports 5,000 brands and 10,000 devices. It charges with a charge stand via a micro USB port and the internal battery is good for 20 hours of use. Pricing and availability are unknown at this time.

Most people want to find a way to replace all their remotes for a single universal remote that can do it all. They reason that with a single remote, they can cut down on confusion and annoyance.

Oh, how wrong those universal remote seekers are.

Like many others who have several devices hooked up in the living room, I’ve tried to find some help organizing my life with a universal remote. I’ve bought some of the most highly acclaimed remotes on the market in an attempt to find a solution, and I’ve spent hours programming all my products to work with them. Needless to say, I’m a veteran when it comes to universal remotes.

But each and every time that I’ve bought a universal remote, I’ve done away with it in a matter of months. In some cases, they don’t provide all the features I’m looking for. In other cases, they become a pain to use. And at times, I’m left wanting more. I’ve simply never been happy with a universal remote. And my most recent search for the suitable solution has turned up empty. I have nothing left to try.

So, I’ve decided that it’s time I share with you all that the best solution for controlling all the devices in the living room is to use multiple remotes. Sure, that might run against conventional wisdom, but trust me, you’ll be much happier (and wealthier) if you follow my lead.

The biggest issue with universal remotes is the cost. Any worthy device on the market will set you back at least a couple hundred dollars. I don’t know about you, but the thought of buying a $200 or $300 remote for the sole purpose of controlling devices in my living room that came with free remotes in the first place doesn’t appeal to me. I’d much rather save that cash for the next big thing, rather than on a remote that’s overpriced.

But it goes beyond pricing. Even if you get a high-quality universal remote, you won’t always get the same functionality you can expect from the remote that goes with a specific device. More popular devices will have ample support from universal remote makers. But try something a bit more obscure and chances are, you’ll be left wondering why you can’t perform at least a couple functions.

And then there’s the set-up time. Call me crazy, but I don’t like spending an inordinate amount of time searching for my devices, ensuring it’s the right version, and programming that into a universal remote. And I especially don’t like doing so every single time I buy a new device. To me, it’s simpler to break out the batteries and pop them into the remote for the respective product. I can then sit down, relax, and enjoy my new gadget.

Plus, let’s face it: in order to watch a movie, do you really need to juggle more than two remotes at a time, anyway? And don’t forget that once the movie is playing, you can put the remote back and not think twice about all the remotes you have.

Sorry, but I’m not seeing so much value in universal remotes. Are there fine options out there for those who are? Of course. But if you ask me, the cheaper and best option is to buy all the devices you want and use the remotes that come with them.

Over time, you’ll realize it’s the right move.

How much would you pay for an iPhone remote control? Peel is hoping the answer extends to at least a few hundred; the company is following the unusual approach of putting its first ZigBee-based universal remote systems up for silent auction, testing the water to see just what users reckon it’s all worth.

The Peel system uses an IR dongle – called the Peel Fruit – which hooks up via a ZigBee connection to an ethernet dongle – called the Peel Cable – on your router, and controls your A/V equipment via a custom app on the iPhone. By using the network rather than some sort of plug-in wireless dongle that attaches to the smartphone itself, you can be in a different room and still control your kit.

It’s certainly more complex than rival systems from Griffin and Gear4, but the question remains whether would-be users will pay a premium for Peel’s setup. The company hints that comparable universal remotes range from $250 to $350, though the Griffin and Gear4 systems will be $80 and $100 respectively. The auction process ends January 31, with regular ordering apparently beginning sometime shortly after that.

Remote controls are tricky little things. No matter how hard you try, there’s always going to be a day that you can’t find the one you’re looking for. But, a pillow is big enough that you probably don’t lose that all the time. Luckily enough, someone was crafty enough, or ingenious enough, to come up with the pillow remote control, so we get the best of both worlds.

The pillow remote control is a throw pillow that’s a fully functional remote, too. It features sewn-in fabric buttons, which will let you turn up and down the volume, change the channel, as well as access the DVD, VCR, as well as your TV. It even has an option to change your input. The pillow universal remote control is available right now, if you’re so inclined, and it will only cost you $30. Just make sure you have 2 AAA batteries lying around, to power the thing.

As for the remote itself, it lacks a swanky LCD display or a touchscreen, but you can program macros for controlling multiple devices with a single button press, and it’s probably sufficient for most people’s A/V setups. For instance, the “Watch TV” button can be set to automatically power on both the TV and your cable box (or your DVR, or your satellite tuner, etc).

Power is from two AA batteries, and the remote is compatible with both PCs and Macs. Available to order now, the Logitech Harmony 300 is priced at $49.99.

Press Release:

A Remote for Everyone: Logitech Harmony 300 Remote Unveiled

New Harmony Replaces Four Remotes, Features Improved Web-based Setup
FREMONT, Calif. — March 31, 2010 — Logitech (SIX: LOGN) (NASDAQ: LOGI) today announced that it is bringing the benefits of the award-winning line of Harmony® remotes to people who have simpler home-entertainment needs. The new Logitech® Harmony® 300 Remote is simple to set up, replaces up to four other remotes and gives you better control of what’s attached to your TV with the touch of one button.

“Most universal remotes have a bad reputation for being hard to program and, as a result, you still use more than one remote to control the devices you own,” said Ashish Arora, vice president and general manager of Logitech’s digital home group. “With the Harmony 300, we wanted to deliver the Harmony remote promise of one remote to control your entertainment system to everyone. No more excuses — it’s time to get rid of the stack of remotes on your coffee table and simplify your home entertainment experience.”

Logitech’s research found that more than one-third of the 75 million U.S. and European households who have tried programming a universal remote had been dissatisfied with the process. But the Logitech Harmony 300 Remote is different. With a refreshed Web-based setup designed exclusively for Logitech’s newest remote, all you have to do is connect the remote to your computer, go to www.myharmony.com, tell us what devices you’re using and we’ll do the rest. In just a few simple steps you can have full control of your home-entertainment system.

Plus, your Harmony 300 remote will never be out of date. Logitech’s remotes are powered by an online device library that covers more brands than any other remote, including more than 225,000 devices from more than 5,000 brands — and the list grows every day. Whether you have an aging VCR or a brand new Blu-ray™ player, you can be confident your Harmony remote will control the IR devices you have.

Once you set up your remote, you can get to your entertainment fast with just one button press. The Watch TV button will turn on your TV and cable box in seconds — no additional remotes needed. The buttons are placed for easy reach, sculpted so your fingers can naturally find the right commands and grouped by how you’ll use them. For example, the buttons for controlling your DVD player are all grouped together. There’s even a set of programmable buttons that you can use to jump right to your favorite channels or use for custom control.
The Harmony 300 joins the ever expanding line of Harmony remotes, an award-winning family that includes the Logitech® Harmony® 700 Remote — which controls up to six devices and is rechargeable — and the flagship Logitech® Harmony® One with its stunning touch-screen display.

Pricing and Availability

Universal remote controls are getting to be so complex that you could reasonably be more entertained by them than you are with what’s on your big-screen TV. Last we heard of Silver PAC they were pushing their eye-catching digital photo frame; now the company is promising an equally distinctive touchscreen remote control for launch at CES 2010, the Silver PAC evolution 5500. Based around a finger-friendly 4.3-inch display, the evolution 5500 not only controls your Windows Media Center but up to 100 other devices and has SideShow functionality.

SideShow, if you’ve forgotten – and we wouldn’t really blame you – is Microsoft’s standard for putting secondary content and widgets onto small sub-displays. That way you can have, say, Twitter or Facebook access from your remote, with the main crunching done on your PC rather than the evolution 5500′s own ARM9 processor.

Other specs include WiFi b/g, 1GB of flash memory and 256MB of RAM, along with a 3-axis motion sensor, ambient light sensor, speaker and microphone. They’ve also dropped in Z-Wave wireless and a mini-USB port for firmware updates and recharging; the battery is a reasonably capacious 3,760mAh pack. No word on pricing – we’re guessing a lot – but Silver PAC reckon the evolution 5500 will arrive on shelves in February 2010.

I have been using and reviewing Logitech Harmony remotes for years and so far, I have found them to be some of the best universal remotes on the market. The only real downside to most of the Harmony remotes is that they are expensive devices.

Logitech has unveiled a new Harmony universal remote that is called the Harmony 700. The 700 is one of the lower price remotes in the line up at $149.99. Features of the remote include a color LCD screen, rechargeable AA batteries, and programmable activities.

The activities are the great part about Harmony remotes allowing the user to program one button to change all the inputs needed for tasks like watching movies and playing games. The Harmony 700 can replace up to six remotes and programs with the same Harmony software the more expensive remotes use. Logitech is set to ship the 700 this month.

Universal remotes are still all the rage, right? Well, SMK-Link is either hoping that’s still the case, or that there’s still someone out there who hasn’t consolidated all of their home entertainment remotes down into one, fancy-looking device. Of course, there’s always the little fact that this remote, the Blu-Link, actually controls your PlayStation 3, too. And, according to SMK-Link, they’re the first company to do it, while also including other home entertainment devices.

The remote utilizes a combination of Bluetooth/infrared to communicate with the devices, which does officially include Sony’s PS3. And if you don’t believe us, there’s definitely the trademark buttons on that remote: square, triange, circle, and X. There’s even a start, select, and Home. The Blu-Ray controls include Top Menu, Popup Menu, Angle, Audio Channel, and Subtitles. The Blu-Link is also known as an “advanced learning” remote. It will learn the button assignments from existing remotes, and it is user-configurable.

Blu-Link supports more than 400 brands of standard and HDTV television and flatscreens, 150 VCR brands, 200 Satellite receiver models, 100 Cable TV receiver brands, 50 DVR models, and 200 home theater surround sound systems. So it’s a pretty safe bet that what you’ve got in that abode of yours, Blu-Link covers it. And let’s face it, if you have each of those things, and you haven’t already found a way to get rid of all those unnecessary remotes littering your coffee table, what better way to do it than this? It’s available right now, and for a minimal $50.

Logitech have unveiled their latest universal remote, the Harmony 900, an RF unit that – with the three bundled IR blasters – can control devices in other rooms or enclosed in cabinets. The Harmony 900 remote has a full-color touchcreen as well as numerous backlit hardware buttons, and can be set up via an online wizard; Logitech claim battery life of up to a week.

Logitech bundle the Harmony 900 with three IR blasters: two “mini blasters” and a main unit that has the RF receiver. These can be spread among the shelves of your AV rack and control multiple components, as opposed to traditional IR emitters that must be adhered to the IR receiver of a device.

Up to fifteen remotes can be supplanted by one Harmony 900, and the remote comes with a docking station for easy recharging. The Logitech Harmony 900 is available to preorder now, priced at $399.99.

Universal Remote Control (URC) have announced their latest mode, the MX-5000, offering a haptic feedback touchscreen. Based around the same technology as the URC MX-6000, only with a more traditional form-factor, the MX-5000 supports two-way communication via WiFi b/g and RF.

Obviously there’s also IR control, with roughly 30 to 50 feet range, and macro support with up to 255 steps per macro; however you can also nest multiple macros for even more complex programs. The 2.7-inch LCD touchscreen can be set up using URC’s Complete Control Program, and supports RS-232 system integration. Done properly, the MX-5000 will show media information and volume levels, along with other data.

As you might have guessed, this isn’t a remote aimed at the casual user, and it’s intended to be set up and supported by a professional A/V company. The pricing certainly reflects that; no definite figures as yet, but don’t expect much change from $1,500.

Logitech have announced availability for their Harmony Adapter for the PS3, the adapter which links the company’s Harmony universal remotes with the Sony console. Priced at $59.99, the Harmony Adapter will be available “in the next few weeks” in North America, together with a European launch in July and an imminent arrival in Australia.

Update: It’s available to order at Amazon

Powered from an AC adapter – Logitech say they didn’t want to occupy one of the PS3′s USB ports, plus of course if it was bus-powered then you wouldn’t be able to use it to switch the console on – the Harmony Adapter basically bridges the IR signal from a Logitech universal remote and the custom Bluetooth command library used by the PS3. It reportedly works with any Logitech Harmony remote control, and the company have put together a custom button mapping layout which will automatically be offered to users when they register a PS3 on their online Harmony account.

Macros, shortcuts and other universal remote functionality is supported, but Logitech claim it isn’t intended to work with other company’s remotes. The adapter measures 99.4 x 65.6 x 18.5 mm and weighs 49.5g.

Thanks to a programmable Universal remote control, I’m able to operate multiple electronic consumer devices using a single controller device on my component shelf, regardless of the brand. If you are in the process to eliminate the need of multiple remote control units, Philips has refreshed their Prestigo Universal remote line-up with SRT 9320 with a 2.8-inch touchscreen LCD screen mixed with hard buttons. It worth a look.

The SRT9320 can control up to 20 devices and is completely programmable to enable multi-devices macro and learning modes. Though it come equipped with a USB port for software update, the device can be programmed directly without the need of the software apps. The touchscreen LCD can display your favorite channel line-up and customized commands.

Unlike their flagship Pronto series remote control, the Prestigo doesn’t has a cradle or charger docking station (doesn’t use rechargeable battery) and it lacks the much-advanced RF capabilities. Priced at $249, Philips’ Prestigo SRT9320 is slated to release in the first quarter of 2009.

Universal Remote Control have announced a new remote, the Digital R50, capable of controlling up to 18 different components through preprogrammed and learnt IR commands. Unlike rival remotes, which require a computer connection or professional help to setup, the R50 can be completely programmed via the integrated 2-inch LED backlit display, including custom labels, logos and more.

A database of thousands of IR codes is pre-loaded, and the R50 is also able to learn IR codes directly from existing remotes if the particular product cannot be found in the database. A USB connection allows for firmware and database updates. Each product controlled can have up to eight pages of controls, with six custom buttons per page; it’s also capable of macros consisting of up to 255 steps, and has 32MB of onboard memory to store them.

In fact, the only real drawback is power. The R50 relies on four AA batteries, and while URC try to spin that as a triumph for convenience and consumer choice (“if the user prefers rechargeable batteries and a charger, they are readily available from the retailer at additional cost”) we imagine that most people would prefer a docking station. Still, you can’t ask too much for $149; the Universal Remote Control Digital R50 is available now.

Press Release:

UNIVERSAL REMOTE CONTROL UNVEILS THE URC DIGITAL R50

Unlike other high-end remote controls, URC’s stylish new flagship device for the consumer retail channel can be programmed entirely on its bright color LCD screen. There’s no need for a PC or internet connection.

Harrison, NY – November 12, 2008 – Universal Remote Control®, Inc. (URC), the pioneer in control technology, today announces the release of the URC Digital R50, its new flagship universal remote control for the consumer retail channel. The URC Digital R50, which users program right on its brightly backlit, customizable color screen, delivers a high level of value, quality and simplicity to make home theater operation fun and easy.

“The URC Digital R50 delivers everything consumers desire in a do-it-yourself universal remote,” said Debra Sharker, director of sales, consumer products, for URC. “Its power lies in its simplicity. It’s a stylish, sophisticated device with excellent ergonomics and a beautiful, colorful interface at an affordable price. Even better, it doesn’t require a PC or an internet connection for set-up. At last, everyone in the family can operate and enjoy the home entertainment system.”

The URC Digital R50 greatly simplifies home theater enjoyment for its owner. It programs in minutes to provide infrared (IR) control of up to 18 home theater components, meaning that it can potentially replace 18 remote controls that come with various audio, TV, DVD, VCR, cable and satellite boxes from virtually any brand. Its bright, sharp two-inch TFT color LCD screen delivers engaging graphics for all home theater activities, customizable labels for every button, and fun, vivid logos for up to 48 favorite channels.

Unlike some universal remote controls, the URC Digital R50 does not require connection to the internet for programming, and no PC is required. Instead of struggling with a paper instruction manual, complicated software, a PC that may be in another room, and a TV in the home theater room, URC Digital R50 users instead employ an intuitive, easy-to-use setup wizard that is directly on the remote’s screen. The wizard includes built-in programming tips and step-by-step instructions; there is no software to install and no paper manual is necessary.

The URC Digital R50’s on-board ProPerfectDatabase™, proven in the course of millions of custom home theater installations via URC’s Professional products, enables setup within minutes. It contains thousands of built-in, pre-programmed control codes for a wide variety of components and brands, including iPod docks. If the database happens to be missing a code, the user still doesn’t need to worry: the learning-capable URC Digital R50 easily accommodates new devices as well as old, foreign or unusual devices as they are added to a home theater. This ability to “learn” functions and commands from any IR remote ensures the URC Digital R50 will never become obsolete. In addition, code database updates via a built-in USB connection are also available.

Just because the URC Digital R50 is simple to program doesn’t mean it’s a simple device; it also offers sophisticated features for advanced home theaters. Completely customizable, it features a powerful ARM7 microprocessor with 32 Mbits of non-volatile/NOR flash memory that enable it to record unique favorite channel buttons with color logos and macros of up to 255 steps. Each device the URC Digital R50 controls can have up to eight pages of its own custom-labeled buttons, and each page can have up to six custom labeled buttons, for a total of 48 buttons per device. Its SimpleSound™ feature provides total volume control over all of the components in a system, even those without their own built-in volume control, such as TiVo, DVD and VCR. A built-in sleep timer can turn off the entire home theater, not just the TV.

The URC Digital R50’s ergonomic design features strategically-located button clusters engineered for comfort and usability. All buttons and the screen feature LED backlighting for ease of use in dark rooms. The remote boasts an IR range of 30 to 50 feet, based on operational environmental conditions.

The URC Digital R50 never needs to be connected to a charging base or charger. Four AA alkaline batteries are included; if the user prefers rechargeable batteries and a charger, they are readily available from the retailer at additional cost. The remote, which weighs nine ounces with batteries, maximizes power in several ways, including Low Battery Warning; Sofa Mode, which prevents accidental battery drain if a button is pressed for a prolonged period of time (for example, if the remote is trapped under a sofa cushion); and unique PowerSaver™ circuitry that enables the color LCD screen to work with standard batteries.

The URC Digital R50 is available now through major retailers like Best Buy and online at BestBuy.com for an everyday price of $149.

We don’t cover universal remotes all that often here on SlashGear, but this one is definitely worth noting. Logitech released the Harmony 510 today, which–while entry-level–sports numerous features and brings a cool design to a wider consumer market.

Priced at under $100, this universal remote falls in line with the 500-series, though sports new colors and a slightly different keypad. Besides a few relabeled buttons, a couple less keys and other changes, this remote is practically a mirror image of the Harmony 550 and actually looks very much like the Harmony 525–a European model.

Now, this Logitech is not exactly anything new or different, but it’s low-price and basic features make it an attractive buy for general consumers. However, if you already have one of the 500-series, you might not want to update just yet.
