Sony Blu-ray Player, Home Theater Projector flaunt 4K HDR

These days, 2K just ain’t enough. Unless you’re talking about smartphones. Heck, even plain 4K might not be! If TV makers are to be asked, 4K HDR is where it’s at, combining the promises of ultra high def resolutions with an ultra high gamut of colors. Of course, that works well for entertainment equipment manufacturers like Sony, who, coincidentally, just announced its first 4K UHD HDR Blu-ray Player, the X1000ES, as well as a brand new 4K UHD HDR Home Theater Projector, the VPL-VW675ES, both taking advantage of the slow but growing number of available 4K content, both on disk and on the Internet.

Samsung 2016 SUHD TVs get HDR+ firmware update

Samsung has announced that it is rolling out a firmware update for its 2016 line of SUHD TVs that have the quantum dot display. The new firmware update adds an HDR+ setting to the TVs enhancing the High Dynamic Range image quality even more than the TVs offered originally. With the new feature, the image quality is enhanced even if the source isn't HDR format.

Hitachi will offer HD and 4K Roku smart TVs this fall

Hitachi is onboard to make Roku smart TVs, the company has announced. This upcoming fall, Hitachi will offer a line of Roku TVs with both HD and Ultra HD 4K resolution, all of them with various sized displays and Roku’s own OS. The televisions, as with the TCL and Hisense versions that have been available for a while, will give users access to Roku’s streaming channels while eliminating the need to have a separate set-top-box or Roku Streaming Stick.

PlayStation Neo tipped to land this year to usher in 4K gaming

While Microsoft was only too happy to tease the E3 2016 crowd with its Project Scorpio console, noticeably missing from the showroom floor and news was the PlayStation Neo, a.k.a. the PlayStation 4.5. Even Nintendo name dropped its NX console in announcing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Fresh Air the Wild. Apparently, there is a reason for that. According to insider sources, Sony's "and a half" console might actually launch later this year, so Sony is merely reserving the PR for when that happens.

TCL 4K Roku smart TVs go up for preorder

The latest TCL smart TVs with Roku baked in bring Ultra HD resolution with them, and they're now up for preorder. First announced in January, the televisions offer all the benefits of a Roku set-top-box without having to purchase and hook up the device separately. As well, the TVs can be used to stream 4k-resolution videos, unlike previous TCL TVs, which were capped at a 1080p resolution.
