SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: July 30, 2012

Well folks, another Monday is in the bag. We must say that for an otherwise ordinary Monday at the end of July, this one was pretty eventful as far as news stories go. Most importantly, today marked the beginning of the patent trail between Samsung and Apple. This morning we took a closer look at the trial and the arguments being made by both sides, while later on in the day we received word that a key witness in the case won't be showing up to testify. Apple's courtroom woes don't end at its trial with Samsung, however, as the company is also being sued over its Siri technology by a university in Taiwan.

Major security vulnerability discovered in Ubisoft UPlay DRM

It's already pretty easy to hate Ubisoft's UPlay DRM, which requires PC gamers to remain connected to the Internet at all times while playing, but today hating it got a whole lot easier. As it turns out, the UPlay client has a pretty major security vulnerability that could allow malicious websites to take control of your computer. The problem stems from the browser plugin that is installed by the UPlay launcher - instead of only granting access to UPlay, the plugin could potentially give a wide range of websites privileged access to your computer.

Ubisoft CEO calls for next console generation

The next console generation is technically getting underway with this year's release of the Wii U, but to many gamers, the next generation won't truly arrive until the next Xbox and PlayStation are introduced as well. When that will happen is really anyone's guess - we've heard plenty of rumors, but Microsoft and Sony are both remaining tight-lipped on their plans for new consoles. Today, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told Gamasutra that his company is ready for the next generation to kick off, saying that a new lineup of consoles would do a lot to spark innovation within the industry.

Ubisoft: Desmond’s Assassin’s Creed days are numbered

Ubisoft: Desmond’s Assassin’s Creed days are numbered

We've seen quite a few Assassin's Creed releases since the first one hit shelves back in 2007, and even though we've met a lot of different characters along the way, one thing has remained the same: modern-day assassin Desmond Miles is constantly featured throughout the series. That may not be the case for much longer, however, as Assassin's Creed 3 creative lead Alex Hutchinson tells Polygon that the Desmond story line has to wrap up sooner or later, presumably with the series continuing after Desmond's tale has come to an end. According to Hutchinson, the Assassin's Creed series risks losing "resonance" with fans if Desmond's over-arcing story line continues on for too much longer.

Assassin’s Creed 3 PC hit with a delay

Assassin's Creed 3 looks to be the most exciting entry in the franchise yet, but unfortunately those who were planning to play it on PC will have to wait a little bit longer than those playing on Xbox 360 and PS3. Ubisoft has delayed the PC version of Assassin's Creed 3 past the originally planned October 30 release date, but didn't delve into specifics as to why. The publisher did say that it will launch sometime before Christmas though, so at least there's that.

Fassbender will likely be playing Desmond Miles, a modern-day barman sent back in time to live in the role of one of these legendary assassins.

Ubisoft’s ZombiU might be ported to other consoles

Even though ZombiU has a name that sounds like it has to be a Wii U exclusive, there is a chance that it might be turned into a cross-platform title. ZombiU was among the title that made the most waves among Nintendo's requisite lineup of Mario titles and mini-games on the Wii U. So to be exclusive would be a huge benefit to the platform.
