Ever felt like you needed to be able to check Twitter from an easier source than, say, your phone? Or, how about that laptop you probably have dangerously close to you at all times? And, sure, some high-def TVs out there have widgets galore, and even your Xbox 360 can check the little blue bird’s site. So, what’s next?

Well, at this point, all we can really tell you is that it involves Google, Intel, and Sony. The New York Times has been talking to people familiar with the matter, so that’s about all the official word we have on the project for now. Google is bringing Android, Intel is bringing the chips, and Sony is hoping beyond hope that if they tag along, people will want their TVs again. What is the goal? They want you to be able to make it from Twitter, to Picasa, and back again, just by “changing the channel.” At least, they want the experience to be that easy. Yes, this is sounding dangerously like WebTV, but we won’t hold that against the companies. In fact, we’re interested in seeing just what Google’s Android would be capable of in a set-top box, or running behind the scenes on our TVs.

And we can’t forget Logitech in all of this. They’ve got the peripherals thing down, so, sure enough, they’re sticking with what they know best. Apparently the project has been going for several months now, but spokespeople from each refused to comment. So, what does all this mean? Just about nothing, right now. Until one of these companies actually comes out and drops a hint themselves, take this one with a grain of salt.

Windows Phone 7 feels like its been a long time coming, and today Steve Ballmer took to the stage complete with some carrier partners to discuss the upcoming smartphone platform. Contrary to previous events, no hardware partners were on stage today – though HTC, LG, Toshiba and other OEMs were all named as developing Windows Phone 7 hardware – but AT&T and Orange were both named as key carrier partners.

Both have a long history of working with Microsoft on smartphones – Orange launching the first model in 2002, and AT&T theirs a year later – though their exact role as “valued partners” wasn’t made particularly clear. Still, it seems one particular push will be for entry-level pricing; Olaf Swantee, SVP of Personal Business for Orange, described Windows Phone 7 as an opportunity to promote mobile data access to a segment that so-far has proved relatively uninterested. According to Swantee, “only 25-percent of our customers today properly access the mobile internet … with Windows Phone 7 we can democratise the smartphone”.

There are also hints of future strategy, though you have to read a little between the lines. AT&T’s representative on-stage, David Christopher, is not only responsible for choosing handsets for the carrier but for the AT&T U-Verse Digital TV service; later, Ballmer described the cellphone as one of the “three screens and a cloud”, and emphasised that “exciting things are happening in the TV sphere” including the potential for integration with mobile devices. With Zune, Xbox, Bing, IE, Office and more onboard with Windows Phone 7, it wouldn’t be too great a stretch to include Windows Media Center functionality in that list too.

When does retro go too far? We reckon this Korea-only LG Serie 1 Retro Classic TV is teetering on the edge, but we still love the idea of 4:3 14-inch CRT set with 60s-futuristic stylings. Although it may look like a TV you could stumble across in a second-hand store, LG have squeezed a digital TV tuner, composite input and a proper remote control into the package, just in case you’re feeling too lazy to twiddle the (working) knobs.

There’s also a rather tongue-in-cheek switch that flips the display from color through black & white and sepia modes. It’s a little small, yes, but it would make the ideal accompaniment to your favorite retro games console.

Unfortunately you’ll need to head over to Korea to pick up the LG Serie 1 Retro Classic TV. It’s available in orange (14SR1EB) and in dark brown (14SR1DB), priced at 249,000 KRW ($216).

Judging by the fact that every time someone in my family or a friend gets a new electronic device I get the call to come install it, there are lots of people out there who don’t know how to hook up electronics. For this reason, there is a big market for installation services for all sorts of electronics items.

Target stores have announced that it will be teaming up with Zip Express Installation with more than 16,000 locations around the country for a TV installation and delivery service. The service will include delivery, installation, setup, and training on the new product.

The new service will start at $99 for simple delivery and setup. Customers wanting a new TV installed on a wall will pay at least $199. The company will recycle the old TV you are replacing for $50. Target will also offer set up and install on game consoles and home networks for $99 each.

As well as the 250GB PS3, Sony Japan have also announced a new digital TV tuner peripheral for the console. The Sony Torne will drop in March 2010, and offer Japanese buyers a way to watch digital terrestrial TV broadcasts on their PS3, together with PVR functionality that allows for recording content (either to the PS3’s HDD or a connected USB 2.0 drive) even while the PS3 is being used for gaming, Blu-ray playback or just in standby mode.

Once you’ve recorded a show – using the new on-screen GUI which shows all the available channels – you can then load it onto a Memory Stick Micro M2 or Memory Stick Pro Duo and slot that into your PSP for watching on the move. Footage will automatically be optimized for the PSP’s display; alternatively, if you have WiFi access while out, you can use remote play to control the Torne and watch streaming content on your PSP.

It’s all reminiscent of the PlayTV peripheral launched in Europe back in 2008, which basically offered the same digital TV recording/time-shifting but for European broadcasts. Sony Torne for PS3 will arrive in Japan come March 2010, priced at 9,980 yen ($109).

We’ve been more than a little dismissive of Qualcomm’s FLO TV Personal Television, with SlashGear columnist Michael Gartenberg summing up most of our doubts when he asked why you’d want to carry a separate, dedicated device. Now, thanks to a deal with mophie, the FLO TV prospect has just got a whole lot more interesting: iPod touch and iPhone juice pack sleeves that add not only a backup battery but FLO TV live television receiving on the Apple handhelds.

While several cellphones in the US are capable of receiving FLO TV broadcasts – which are transmitted live in their own chunk of spectrum, rather than delivered over the 3G networks – the iPhone is not one of them. This new mophie adapter opens up FLO TV to a huge, dare we say accessory-voracious market of Apple fans.

There’ll be a subscription fee involved, obviously, which right now neither company are coming clean on; we’re guessing it’ll be around $8.99 per month based on a two-year contract, just like the standalone viewer. Expect the FLO TV mophie juice pack to arrive in the US in the first half of 2010, price to be confirmed.

Consumers can also utilize the device as back-up battery power in between charges.

Service not available everywhere. Programming subject to change / blackout restrictions. Service subscription required. “Live mobile television” means the FLO TV service transmits channels in real time; no downloading, sideloading or buffering.

At CES in January 2009, thin TVs were everywhere. It seemed like each day of the show one company or another was talking about the world’s thinnest TV. It seems that at CES 2010 we are set to see some thin TVs as well.

LG unveiled a massively thin LCD screen today that is only 2.6mm thick. Despite how thin it is the screen is also large at 42-inches and uses LED backlighting. The entire set will weigh less than 4KG. The display also has a 120Hz refresh rate.

That is all the specs that LG offers on the screen. I want to know how much this will cost. If the screen isn’t that much more than the typical LCD, we may be looking at the OLED slayer here. We should get the full scoop next month at CES.

I really don’t get the fascination with Hello Kitty. There are some many products with the cat on them it boggles the mind. The feline shows up on phones, underwear, and other adult unmentionables with alarming regularity. I cringe each time my daughter points out something with Hello Kitty on it in the store. Some of the worst Hello Kittie offenders are in Japan, as evidenced by this new DY-133KT Hello Kitty TV.

The screen is only 13.3-inches making it sized more for a kid’s room or perhaps a sick and twisted kitchen. The set will launch on Christmas Eve and is set to cost 49,800 yen or about $559 here in the States. As you expect with any Hello Kitty gear, it sports the kitty shape with whiskers and a red bow. The remote looks like a red bow as well.

The screen has a resolution of 1280 x 800 and a button on the remote puts the black eyes and yellow nose on the screen to complete the Hello Kitty scene (or make you puke). The set measures 414 x 149 x 372 mm and weighs 2.3kg and connectivity includes PC, composite, and S-video.

While we may continue to blast Qualcomm’s FLO TV standalone streaming TV handheld, we have no problem with manufacturers integrating mobile TV into their cellphones. Nokia’s latest, the 5330 Mobile TV Edition, does exactly as its name suggests: packs a DVB-H digital TV tuner into a media-centric handset, complete with hardware music control keys, a 2.4-inch QVGA display and a 3.5mm headphones jack.

Rather than use 3G for streaming video, the 5330 Mobile TV Edition actually has a proper TV tuner squeezed inside, with the headphones wire acting as an antenna. You also get an EPG for navigating what’s on offer, and the battery is rated for up to six hours continuous reception; you’ll obviously need to be living in a country where DVB-H TV is transmitted, however, though Nokia claim the current service in Austria, Finland, Ghana, Kenya, India, Italy, Namibia, Nigeria, Netherland, Philippines and Switzerland (among others) will be joined by a further 20 countries over the next 12-18 months.

Elsewhere, there’s a 3.2-megapixel camera with LED flash, Comes With Music support for unlimited audio downloads, and various email and IM standards supported. The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition will be priced at around €155 ($232) pre-tax and subsidies.

Press Release:

Watch this space: Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition launched
November 16, 2009

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition, an entertainment hub that combines mobile broadcast TV (DVB-H), social networking, music and gaming in one compact 3G device. With mobile broadcast TV consumption on the rise – by 2012 there will be over 300 million people worldwide watching TV on their mobile phones – this handset offers easy access to anyone wanting to enjoy an exceptional live, on-the-move TV experience.

Nokia vice president Mark Selby said, “The introduction of the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition responds to the arrival of DVB-H broadcast mobile TV networks in new markets and offers an affordable device for new and existing customers alike. Customers are increasingly watching a variety of programmes on their mobiles, such as drama programs, news and sport, for a longer period of time. The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition has the sound and image quality to hold audiences captive.”

Watch TV. Anywhere.
Thanks to the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition’s DVB-H technology, programs burst through the QVGA 2.4″ screen in full-colour, crystal clear, sharp images. Plug in 3.5mm headphones for personal viewing or use the loudspeaker option to share the experience with friends and family.

With one-click access to live broadcasts, the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition can pick up the best channels around. Set reminders for favorite shows to make sure key episodes aren’t missed and create personal channel lists with Nokia’s innovative Electronic Program Guide (EPG) for a truly tailored mobile broadcast TV experience.

The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition provides broadcast picture quality while the headset acts as an antenna for outstanding reception, so no blank screens or interference during those all important moments. Long battery life gives up to six hours of DVB-H usage; enough time to watch three football matches – or six episodes of a soap opera – before recharging. The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition will retail for 155 Euros before taxes and subsidies.

Franklin Selgert, Chairman, Broadcast Mobile Convergence Forum said, “It is essential for DVB-H service providers to have a variety of devices capable of serving the mass market. Having a complete portfolio of handsets is pivotal for the commercial success of mobile TV. The new Nokia DVB-H enabled mobile phone, the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition, is a great addition to the current portfolio of broadcast TV-capable handsets.”

Catch up with friends. Anytime.
The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition comes with all the latest social networking software, making it simple to stay in touch with friends via Ovi Contacts, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube. Post status updates for friends and family to follow or instant message (IM) them via Windows Live(TM) Messenger, Google Talk, Yahoo! Messenger, ICQ, AOL and many others.

Capture photos and video clips, day or night, using the 3.2 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom and LED flash before uploading and sharing favourite shots via sites such as OviShare and Flickr. Alternatively, email them via Ovi Mail, Nokia Messaging, Windows Live Messenger, Gmail, or Yahoo! Mail.

Play music. Whenever.
Accessing music and other apps is easy with dedicated music keys and links to the Nokia Music store (where available). The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV edition is also compatible with Nokia’s innovative Comes with Music service – providing free, unlimited access to millions of tracks. Download free music anytime, anywhere – and keep all the music forever.

Keep up-to-date. Wherever.
Check out the choice of personalized media and applications in the Ovi Store. A one-stop-shop for thousands of applications, games, videos, podcasts, productivity tools, web and location-based services and more, means personalizing the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition is just the touch of a button away.

Mobile TV. Roll-out.
Nokia and Nokia Siemens Networks work with more than 30 operators worldwide on Mobile TV implementations. Commercial launches with Mobile TV services based on DVB-H and OMA BCAST standards include Austria, Finland, Ghana, Kenya, India, Italy, Namibia, Nigeria, Netherland, Philippines and Switzerland. Additional commercial launches can be expected during the next 12-18 month in more than 20 countries.

Stefan Schneiders, Head of Mobile TV solutions at Nokia Siemens Networks said, “It is great that Nokia has affirmed its commitment to DVB-H by launching the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition. 2010 brings a series of high-profile global sporting events and this is a good opportunity for operators to create, drive and bundle innovative mobile TV services based on DVB-H. In fact, during the 2006 World Cup, Italy saw the launch of the most successful mobile TV Broadcasting service in Europe.”

Francois Theron, CEO at DStv Mobile comments: “DStv Mobile has rolled out DVB-H networks in Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana and Namibia and we are currently rolling out a number of new networks in other African countries. Our success has been built around offering innovative and premium television content at an affordable price while facilitating access to inexpensive handsets which suit the requirements of consumers in Africa. The introduction of the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition is a welcome development as Nokia is a trusted brand in Africa and will further encourage television viewers to access entertainment, sport and news on the DStv Mobile platforms.”

Vincent Grivet, Vice President, Mobile TV TDF, France said “We are very excited by the launch of the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition. It is a highly seducing and compelling device and will be the perfect platform for introducing both European mobile users and operators to a high quality and constraint free mobile TV experience. This is exactly what the industry has been waiting for to accelerate the broadcast mobile TV roll out, and we look forward to the successful and fast distribution of this innovative device in our key European markets such as Finland, Austria, Germany and France.

Vincenzo Novari, CEO at Hutch 3G, Italy, said: “As the largest handset producer in the world, Nokia’s announcement is real evidence of their commitment to the development of the broadcast mobile TV market. Networks, content and handsets made for mass consumer consumption are the key ingredients for fuelling the market’s growth”.

Erik Sylvestersson, Vice President Sales & Marketing at DNA Finland said: “Live digital TV broadcasts over DVB-H networks is becoming more accessible to more people. In Finland, we have found that sport and news are the key drivers for broadcast mobile TV consumption among consumers. People want to be able to watch the action as it happens – rather than settle for highlight shows once they get home. Consumers expect an exceptional on-the-move TV experience at an affordable price, something the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition is fully equipped to deliver.”

Notes to editors:

Compatibility with the aforementioned services may be limited to certain countries.

Nokia’s first commercial DVB-H device was the Nokia N92, launched in November 2005. Nokia’s DVB-H device range includes the Nokia N92, Nokia N77, and the Nokia N96. In addition Nokia enables DVB-H reception on multiple devices including the Nokia N97, Nokia N97 mini, Nokia N86 8MP, Nokia E75, Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Nokia X6 by using the Nokia Mobile TV Receiver SU-33W.

Users of Samsung LCD and Plasma Series 650 and higher and Samsung LED series 7000 HDTVs can now download the Amazon Video on Demand Widget at no charge via the Internet@TV content feature on their sets. The widget allows the user to access the Amazon library of 50,000 films and TV shows.

The programs are available to rent or purchase on demand. Amazon says that 2,000 of the titles are available in HD resolution, some of the content is new release films, and TV shows are often available the day after they broadcast on TV. Naturally, you need an Internet connection to use the service.

Toshiba have announced their latest high-end LCD TV, and it’s the first to include the Cell Broadband Engine for multi-channel display and DVR recording. The Toshiba CELL REGZA 55X1 has a 55-inch, 5,000,000:1 contrast LED-backlit panel, with independent control over each of the 512 LED backlighting zones and 240Hz refresh. It’s accompanied by a processor box, housing the Cell goodies, which can pump out eight channels to be shown on-screen at once, time-shift up to eight channels simultaneously for 26 hours, or boot up a web browser based on Opera.

In fact the DVR box has a whopping 3TB of storage (up to 2TB set aside for time-shifting) and supports DLNA streaming and YouTube playback, too. Both it and the display are finished in “smoked aluminum”, and the screen also uses “self-congruency” to improve picture quality at the edges of the panel, and 2.5x the luminance of regular sets. A 7-speaker sound bar is slung under the display.

The Toshiba CELL REGZA 55X1 will arrive in Japan come December, and is tipped to be priced at 1,000,000 yen ($11,107). It’s also to be the first of a number of similar sets, including smaller (and hopefully cheaper) models that offer the same CELL processing and DLNA server technology.

Press Release:

Toshiba Unveils the CELL REGZA 55X1

The World’s First1 LCD TV Integrating the Cell Broadband Engine™–To be Available in Japanese Market from December–

Tokyo—Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) today unveiled the future of home entertainment, the CELL REGZA 55X1. This new LCD TV, the flagship of the company’s REGZA line-up, offers viewers state-of-the-art picture quality, including a dynamic contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1, and supports this with ultra-high-speed processing and recording, enhanced navigation and seamless network interactivity. The CELL REGZA 55X1 will be available in the Japanese market from the beginning of December.

The heart of CELL REGZA is Toshiba’s CELL Platform. A combination of the high speed parallel processing of the Cell Broadband Engine™ 2, specially developed for demanding multimedia applications, and Toshiba’s advanced image-processing algorithms, the CELL Platform achieves an arithmetic processing capability approximately 143 times 3 that of the current top-of-the-line REGZA TV, allowing it to support unrivaled image-enhancing capabilities. These include:

CELL Platform Super Resolution Technology that builds on Toshiba’s current4, super resolution technology to offer unmatched picture quality.
Self-congruency, a dedicated process that improves image quality at the edge of the picture.
Enhanced color and brightness balance that improves picture color and definition.
LED backlight control system. In the CELL REGZA, the display is divided into 512 distinct areas, each with individually controlled lighting. Luminance is pushed to an industry high 5 of 1250cd/m2, 2.5 times the level of typical TVs, and the dynamic contrast ratio6 is an astonishing 5,000,000:1.
Another distinguishing feature of CELL REGZA is its storage capacity: a 3-terabyte (TB)7 hard disk drive. Two terabytes of capacity are dedicated to the CELL REGZA’s “time-shift machine,”8 which can simultaneously record up to approximately 26 hours of programming for up to eight channels9 of digital terrestrial broadcasts. The time-shift machine allows viewers to catch up on missed programs simply by pressing the “time-shift machine” button on the remote control.

With the ability to store a massive amount of recorded programs, a fast, easy search function is essential. Toshiba delivers with “roaming navigation.” This allows viewers to find and display information on recorded, current and future programs simply by inserting an identifier—the title, person’s name, genre or related keywords.

The CELL REGZA consists of a striking, slim monitor and a stylish tuner that also integrates the hard disk drive. Both have a smoked aluminum finish, achieved with an alumite10 deposition process that lends the design a feeling of luxury. The remote controller is finished in the same way.

Drawing on some 80 years of experience in TV technology, and on synergies between its visual products, semiconductor and storage device businesses, Toshiba has developed CELL REGZA not only as the flagship model of its REGZA series, but also as a statement of the future of the LCD TV.

Product Outline

Product	Model	Screen	Price	Launch in Japan
CELL REGZA	55X1	55-inch
Full HD	Open	Beginning of
December 2009

Background to Development

As Japan approaches the end of analogue broadcasting in 2011, the digital TV market has entered a period of diversifying customer needs. In order to meet demand for more vivid reproduction of high contrast, high definition images, simultaneous viewing and recording of multiple programs, along with access to broadband content, Toshiba has developed the CELL REGZA TV and its innovative CELL Platform.

Key Features of the CELL REGZA

1. CELL Platform Super Resolution Technology achieves superior HD images

The CELL Platform supports the most advanced version of Toshiba’s super resolution technology. Faithful image reproduction includes enhanced edge detail and color saturation, and also extends to better rendering of video from the Internet.

Super Resolution Technology: Self-congruency captures edge detail
Self-congruency, a newly developed technology, reconstructs the edge of the picture with more detail and greater realism. It samples successive patterns with the same intensity around the edge of images, and then copies pixels from these more defined areas to other parts of the edge. The result is more precise detail and more realistic high definition images.

Super resolution technology: Brighter color and image definition11
Digital images are rendered as a combination of “brightness” and “color” in each individual pixel. In normal digital broadcasts, the processor cannot match the pace at which data is delivered from the receiver, and data transfers are typically made with color information compressed to one-fourth that of brightness. The CELL Platform uses a Toshiba-developed algorithm to boost reproduction of color information to half the level of brightness information. Increasing color information reduces blurring at the edge of images, creating sharper, better defined pictures.

Super resolution technology: Improved Internet content and animation
Video content from the Internet viewed on a TV tends to be blurred, due to the lack of resolution and noise compression. Super resolution technology detects the noise compression of low-resolution Internet content and then separates and corrects the image to reproduce a sharper, clearer image more suited to a larger screen. The super resolution technology also detects animation content and controls noise at the edges.

2. High contrast of Mega LED Panel and LED Backlight control system

CELL REGZA integrates a Mega LED panel specially designed to interface with the CELL REGZA’s high luminance LED. Together they achieve outstanding picture quality that is further enhanced by the CELL Platform.

Peak luminance is boosted 2.5 times and enhanced by intelligent peak luminance control
A peak luminance of 1250cd/m2 (the display’s highest level of brightness and the maximum yet achieved in the industry) assures stunningly bright whites, while the wide dynamic range achieved by backlight luminance adjustment delivers a dynamic contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1, assuring deep, detailed blacks.

LED block array divides display into 512 separate areas
Toshiba’s previous LED backlight control system divided the screen into 9612 distinct areas; the CELL REGZA control system divides it into 512, over five times more. This increase enables much closer management of image contrast and brings out image detail to the full. Better backlight control also sharpens edge detail and the textural effect of adjacent areas of brightness and darkness.

3. Doubling the effect of ClearScan 240

Toshiba’s ClearScan 240 defines the standard for blur-free fast moving images, but with the CELL REGZA the company sets the bar even higher. By combining the 120Hz scan rate of ClearScan 240 with its new Backlight Scanning technology, Toshiba now achieves 240Hz scanning that makes action scenes crisper than ever. The new double backlight scanning function divides the display into 16, against eight for current REGZA models13.

4. Improving picture quality with color temperature control

Picture quality is also affected by ambient lighting conditions. CELL REGZA delivers real-time color temperature analysis that can identify daylight, evening sunlight, interior lighting and darkness. Optimum picture quality is achieved by automatic fine tuning of multiple control settings: 1024 steps in color temperature, a 128 scale dynamic gamma range, 100 brightness settings, 32 settings each for color saturation, color sharpness, and adjustment of super resolution, plus control of the LED backlighting.

5. Support for multiple recording and playback functions with a 3TB hard disk

“Time-shift machine” function simultaneously records multiple channels
CELL REGZA integrates a tuner supporting eight digital terrestrial channels, and its time-shift machine can store up to 2TB of recorded programs—that adds up to approximately 26 hours of programs simultaneously recorded from eight channels (the number of terrestrial digital channels available in Japan). Simply pressing the time-shift key on the remote control gives instant access to this huge library of recorded programs, and allows viewers to enjoy missed TV programs—or old favorites—whenever they like.

“Roaming Navigation” supports relevancy-based searches
“Roaming Navigator” can search for and deliver data on archived, on-the-air, and to-be-aired programs. A visual display centers on a thumbnail14 of the program chosen by the viewer, and other programs are shown circling this, either nearer or further, depending on relevancy15. Searches can be based on program title, a character or actor’s name, genre or keyword. Relevancy-based searches deliver what you are looking for, and much more.

Multi-Image display of eight digital channels simultaneously while recording
The split screen is nothing new, but an eight-window multi-display16 is. With multi-image display for up to eight digital channels, it is a lot easier for viewers to check out programs and make choices.

“Multi Thumbnail” display shows scenes of recorded programs as thumbnails
“Multi Thumbnail” displays recorded programs as a multi-display of 40 time-divided thumbnails, making it very easy to select and go to a particular scene.

6. Network functionality

Supporting high image quality YouTube17 with high quality picture
A browser supporting full HD, based on the Opera18 browser and co-developed with Opera Software, provides full support viewing YouTube contents at near HD level quality. In addition, CELL REGZA supports:

- Broadband service
- DLNA19
- Display of JPEG digital photographs

7. CELL REGZA audio

CELL REGZA’S picture quality is complemented by a newly developed audio system and multi-amplifier system that deliver vibrant, full-bodied sound far surpassing that of current TV sound systems.

The days of a universal laptop TV tuner are almost upon us, as CrestaTech begin sampling their CrestaTV “universal broadband receiver”. Packing not only support for DVBT, ATSC, Cable QAM, NTSC and PAL TV standards, the CrestaTV also receives FM radio and features a GPS receiver, and could allow travellers to watch TV on their notebooks no matter where in the world they are.

The CrestaTV chipset uses a combination of hardware and software for its tuning, as well as linking the GPS to the TV so that it intelligently searches for the most likely local channels first. No word on when we might expect to see it in production notebooks, nor how much it might add to the cost, but manufacturers have access to the reference boards now.

Press Release:

CrestaTech’s New “HDTV Anywhere” Chip Now Ready for Sampling to PC OEMs

Innovative architecture turns laptop PCs into globetrotting TVs

SAN FRANCISCO & SANTA CLARA, Calif. –(Business Wire)– Sep 22, 2009 Get ready to get global with HDTV on a PC. Reference designs and samples for CrestaTech’s new programmable broadband technology are now available, enabling PC manufacturers to pop in one universal chip and support all analog TV and digital TV standards worldwide.

Demonstrated publicly for the first time at this week’s Intel Developer Forum 2009, the CrestaTV™ Universal Broadband Receiver technology combines a programmable RF IC and software that will allow PCs to receive live analog or digital TV broadcast, radio and GPS signals in any city, any region and any country around the world. CrestaTV unleashes unprecedented support for the widest variety of broadband frequencies ever.

As a result, for the first time, PC manufacturers can ship the same TV tuner module to Barcelona as they ship to Manhattan or St. Petersburg, ultimately streamlining the design and deployment process and reducing costs of the overall system.

And PC users can watch the TV they want wherever they travel, picking up local broadcasts or sportscasts by using embedded GPS capabilities to automatically create local channel guides in their area.

“No other chip overcomes the regional and technical limitations of on-the-go TV for PCs like the CrestaTV solution,” said George Haber, CrestaTech president and CEO. “By supporting any TV broadcast standard anywhere, we’re helping turn laptop PCs into truly mobile media centers, where consumers can experience the ubiquity of the Internet with broadcast television at the same time.”

On display at booth 215, the CrestaTV Universal Broadband Receiver supports formats including DVBT, ATSC, Cable QAM, NTSC and PAL, along with FM radio and GPS capabilities.

CrestaTV is comprised of the CTC-200/201 programmable RF and Interface IC and multi-threaded signal processing software. The fully integrated solution eliminates all external filters. Supported frequencies include 45Mhz to 1GHz – and L1 band. OEMs can implement CrestaTV on PCI express cards for desktops and PCI mini-express cards or USB TV modules for laptops.

CrestaTech also offers a suite of companion software applications, CrestaWare, which provide fast channel scanning, enhanced reception, TV and radio tower geo-location and more. It also has an open platform for the development of social media and user-generated content programs.

Samples and evaluation boards are available for designers to quickly prototype and test global TV reception. Contact CrestaTech to arrange a demonstration or with any product requests.

There are so many awesome buzzwords in HDI’s new TV, we almost don’t know where to begin. The Los Gatos startup has created a 100-inch 3D HDTV that’s capable of showing 1080p content using lasers, and according to Chief Technical Officer Edmund Sandberg the speed of the system – over 1,000fps – means that the display doesn’t flicker.

Video after the cut

The lasers are installed in a custom module, which combines 1W red, green and blue units, and paired with LCoS panels from Microdisplay; together, they’re good enough for 300 nits of brightness and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio. Overall power consumption is said to be around 150W.

There’s no word on pricing nor availability estimates for the HDI display, but given the various technologies they’re using we can’t imagine it’ll be a cheap home theater setup. Still, if you’re desperate to reach out and touch your favorite film star, and not get a headache while you do so, you could always sell organs until you have enough cash.

LG have confirmed that their 15-inch OLED TV will be priced at between $2,500 and $3,000 when it launches in Korea this November. A senior executive from the company has told OLED-Info that, while the flat-panel’s final price is yet to be decided, it will be in the same bracket as the existing Sony XEL-1 OLED TV.

While the Sony is roughly the same price as the upcoming LG, it has a smaller, 11-inch OLED panel. It’s still expensive, but then if you want a 1.7mm-thick screen running at 1,366 x 768 resolution and with an impressive 100,000:1 contrast ratio, then it’s time to start saving; the LG set is expected to arrive worldwide in 2010.

Here’s another of those ideas where you wonder exactly why we haven’t been doing this already. APSI’s latest in-car navigation system, the C100, consists of a GPS cradle complete with A/V connectivity and a slide-out touchscreen PMP. That way you have the easy wiring of a permanent solution together with the convenience of a removable media player.

It also means you have physical controls for in-car use, which are often easier to use than on-screen buttons that demand you actually look at the PND. Since this is a Korean product they’ve piped it full of their navigation cleverness, which means full 3D mapping not only of roads but landmarks, along with a DMB TV tuner, audio and video playback, and all the connectivity you’d need to hook up your car speakers.

There’s also support for an external GPS receiver, an A/V input for a reversing camera, and the cradle recharges the PMP section while it’s docked. No word on pricing when the APSI C100 lands in Korea, but we can’t expect it’ll be cheap.

Not everyone wants a huge television taking up the space in their living room. Especially if you don’t have a lot of space to give up. So it’s good to see companies like LG still giving some attention to the smaller formats, which are suited perfectly for movie watching and video game playing. It doesn’t hurt that LG manages to make the new LU7000 sexy, either.

Today marks the announcement from LG, regarding the launch of their new designer series of small televisions, the LU7000. Each set, from either 19″ to 22-inch screens, come packed with a built-in DVD player, so that you can keep everything nice and neat, and get rid of those pesky wires at the same time. The sets are a glossy black finish, which means you probably won’t want to touch them all that often, less you get fingerprints scattered across the frame of your beautiful new TV. The LU7000’s also have invisible speakers built-in, keeping the sleek and minimalistic approach in tact.

The LU7000’s are also Freeview integrated. There’s two HDMI connections on the back, so that you can plug in any of your favorite gaming consoles, as well as home media devices or set-top boxes. The TV itself is compatible with most file formats, so that you can view JPEGs and listen to music via the USB 2.0 port. The TV is part of the movement to reduce power consumption, as it is an eco-friendly LCD alternative. The LU7000 is set to launch in the UK this month, but there is no word on pricing.

Details of a Qualcomm mobile digital TV device have leaked, courtesy of gdgt, complete with a conceptual render of what the iPhone-sized handheld may look like. The Qualcomm FLO TV PTV (Personal Television) uses the company’s terrestrial digital TV service, a broadcast system rather than streaming over 3G.

According to the original source, the PMP has a capacitive touchscreen – no word on size – with a new, gesture-based UI. There’s also 4GB of internal storage with confirmed music playback, integrated stereo speakers and a battery that’s good for 300hrs of standby, 15hrs of music or 5hrs of FLO TV.

It seems that Qualcomm have grown tired of waiting for other manufacturers to support FLO TV in their mobile devices – some cellphones do feature the technology, but take-up has been comparatively slow – and instead are pushing the system with their own reference device. No word on launch schedule or pricing, but it’s likely that we could see a working model at CES 2010.

Each set also has an SD/SDHC card slot which can play back video, image and audio content, including AVCHD footage pulled directly from an HD camcorder. Obviously there’s 1080/24p Full HD support, plus a virtual 5.1 surround sound system that uses the HDTVs stereo speakers.

YouTube streaming video and a nifty CCTV system that integrates with up to four different wireless security cameras round out the main specifications. The two VIERA sets will land on September 15th, price to be announced.

Sky UK have announced that they will be launching a Sky 3D channel in 2010, bringing three-dimensional live broadcasts to subscribers with the company’s Sky+HD DVR box. The system will, however, require a special “3D Ready” TV, expected to go on sale in the UK during 2010.

The new channel will show a combination of movies, entertainment and sport content, and Sky have been trialling the system since April this year. So far, key 3D events have included rugby and football matches, a specially staged performance of Swan Lake, and a boxing match.

What’s unclear right now is the actual launch date for Sky 3D, together with how much the channel will cost to subscribers and – more importantly, perhaps – how much the “3D Ready” TVs will be. Sky are promising those details “closer to the launch”.

Press Release:

Sky to launch 3D TV in 2010 following record Sky+HD growth

Sky has announced that the number of customers choosing Sky+HD, the UK’s only high definition (HD) service currently capable of broadcasting 3D services, has increased to 1.313 million following record growth.

Customers have responded in record numbers to Sky’s high quality and great value HD service. Sky has more than doubled the number of HD customers in the last year alone with over 90 customers* an hour joining Sky+HD.

In the next step in the Sky+HD journey, Sky today announced that it will launch the UK’s first 3D channel next year. The channel will offer a broad selection of the best available 3D programming, which is expected to include movies, entertainment and sport. The service will be broadcast across Sky’s existing HD infrastructure and be available via the current generation of Sky+HD
set-top boxes. To watch 3D, customers will also require a new ‘3D Ready’ TV, which are expected to be on sale in the UK next year.

This commitment follows extensive research and development activity into 3D, which included Sky becoming the first TV company in Europe to broadcast a live event in 3D TV. On 2nd April 2009 Sky successfully broadcast a performance by Keane live from Abbey Road Studios via the company’s satellite network to a Sky+HD set-top box and domestic 3D Ready TV.

Sky has also confirmed the launch of a comprehensive ‘pull’ video-on-demand (VOD) service next year, to provide Sky+HD customers with additional choice and control to complement Sky+ and the current Sky Anytime ‘push’ VOD service. This new service will use the broadband capability of existing Sky+HD boxes.

Brian Sullivan, Managing Director of Sky’s Customer Group, comments:

“Well over a million homes have future-proofed themselves with Sky+HD, a platform for choice, quality and future innovation. With Sky+ as standard, our customers are already enjoying amazing picture and sound quality on a range of high-quality HD channels which cater to the interests and passions of the whole family.

“Next year we will make our HD boxes work even harder for customers by launching Europe’s first 3D TV channel, as well as introducing a comprehensive video-on-demand service to complement Sky+ and the current Sky Anytime service.

“3D is a genuinely ‘seeing is believing’ experience, making TV come to life as never before. Just like the launch of digital, Sky+ and HD, this is latest step in our commitment to innovating for customers.”

Sky launched the UK’s first national HD service in May 2006 which has since become Europe’s most successful HD service. Today Sky+HD customers can watch 33 HD channels from leading brands such as Sky Movies, Sky Sports, Channel 4, Disney, MTV, BBC, Discovery, FX, Sky1 and National Geographic. Sky+HD customers can choose up to 400 hours a day – or 13,000 hours a month – of quality HD content, which is significantly more than any other TV platform.

Further channels are due shortly, including ESPN HD (August 2009), and Sky News HD (Spring 2010), with a view to growing the offering to 50 channels over time.

Further details on Sky’s pull VOD and 3DTV services, including pricing, packaging and entitlement, will be announced closer to launch.

* On average in the year to end June 2009

Collins America have already reworked their CinemaView displays – best known for offering Mini DisplayPort connectivity suitable for use with Apple’s latest MacBook and MacBook Pro models – despite none of the original monitors being available for sale. The company has dropped the smallest models, the 19-inch CinemaView 19 and 20.1-inch CinemaView 20, and added the 47-inch CinemaView 47, a combination TV and PC, and an external HD TV tuner.

The CinemaView 47 also gets four USB 2.0 ports, and runs at 1920 x 1080 resolution with 500 cd/m2 brightness, a 4,000:1 contrast ratio and 4ms gray-to-gray response time. Its smaller sibling is the CinemaView 24, a 24-inch 1920 x 1080 display again with four USB 2.0 ports and a Mini DisplayPort, with 300 cd/m2 brightness, 1,000:1 contrast ratio and half the gray-to-gray response time.

Finally, Collins America have announced the CinemaView TV, a compact TV tuner box with two HD tuners with picture-in-picture, that can output to either HDMI or Mini DisplayPort. It includes both powered and non-powered 5.1 channel Dolby Digital surround sound outputs, analog and digital audio inputs, and component/composite video, plus an RF remote control.

The CinemaView 24 will go on sale in October this year, priced at $499. The CinemaView 47 and the CinemaView TV will follow in January 2010, priced at $1,499 and $399 respectively.

This, the executive claimed, is because “the larger the display, the more efficient the OLED technology.” It’s certainly given the company’s HR department a boost: LG Display have apparently taken on 1,700 new staff in research and development this year.

“The commercial success of OLEDs hinges on how it shows its superiority compared to existing liquid crystal display (LCD) technologies. We will focus on TV panels rather than cell phone panels because the larger the display, the more efficient the OLED technology” Kwon Young-soo, CEO, LG Display

LG Display are still investing into LCD, however. After reporting a profit in Q2 2009 after panel prices rose and demand outstripped supply, the company is investing the equivalent of $2.59bn into an eighth-generation production line, which will be operational by the second half of 2010.

ASUS have announced a new range of LCD TV/monitor hybrids, the TV Monitor T1 Series. Available in 22-, 24- and 27-inch versions, the T1 Series displays all offer 1920 x 1080 resolution for Full HD 1080p playback, and include dual HDMI inputs and both digital (DVB-T) and analog (PAL/SECAM) TV reception.

There are also two SCART sockets, D-Sub, Composite, Component, S-Video and a CI slot, together with audio-in, S/PDIF, separate audio-out and headphone sockets, and an antenna socket. The T1’s onboard speakers are hidden behind the unusually-patterned mesh at the front, and each offer 7W; meanwhile brightness is 300 cd/m2, while contrast is finagled up to an artificial 20,000:1.

Unfortunately the one feature we’d really pay for - picture-in-picture with a small TV window and the rest of the display used for computer workspace - doesn’t seem to be present. No word on pricing or availability.

For a moment there, the UK was almost ahead: Mio’s Navman Spirit TV PNDs wowed and impressed with their blend of GPS navigation and digital TV, only to be blown out of the proverbial water by Korean firm Hyundai Telematics. Their new PROVIA A7+ PND takes the Navman Spirit TV and uses that as a mere kicking-off point, stuffing in simultaneous T-DMB digital TV and TPEG road status reception and more.

There’s also a USB 2.0 port, AV output if the 7-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen isn’t big enough for you, and support for a rear camera for use when reversing. Extra storage can be added via an SD card slot or a USB memory stick.

Everything runs on an 806MHz Monahans processor (likely to be the PXA320) that’s powerful enough to offer picture-in-picture with the navigation display showing in the corner of a TV show. No word on pricing, but as with many Korean gadgets this may be a case of simply lusting from afar.

LG have unveiled two new ”full LED” HDTVs, each with 55-inch LCD panels and 240Hz refresh rates. The LG 55LH95 and LG 55LH93 both use 3,360 individual LEDs and boast a contrast ratio of 5,000,000:1; the company’s backlighting technology can individually control 240 sections of the display, dimming or brightening as suits the image on-screen.

Despite sliding in all those LEDs, the new HDTVs are still slimline. Depth is just 24.8mm, despite the company also fitting in wireless connectivity; it’s unclear from the press release exactly which format LG have selected, but considering they’re boasting zero degradation we’re assuming it’s some type of ultrawideband HDMI.

The two new sets will be released in July, priced at around $5,500 for the 55LH93 and around $5,900 for the 55LH95. Smaller 42-inch and 47-inch “full LED” sets will follow by the end of 2009, though they won’t be as slimline as these 24.8mm flagship models.

Press Release:

LG Electronics Announces the Official Start of the Ultra-Slim Full LED LCD TV Era

Seoul (Korea Newswire) June 25, 2009 02:00 PM — LG Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in consumer electronics, today unveiled two new ultra-slim “full LED” LCD TVs in Seoul. The new 55-inch screens –- models 55LH95 and 55LH93 respectively –- lead the market in terms of picture quality, design and convenience.

“These products were designed specifically to target the high-end segment and offer unmatched quality and design,” said LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company President and CEO, Simon Kang. “These new models will change the LED LCD TV market landscape and we expect these devices to reinforce the premium image of LCD TVs in general,” said LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company President and CEO, Simon Kang.

LG’s ambitious new product line offers a brighter and clearer screen than competing products thanks to backlighting that employs a total of 3,360 LEDs –- seven times more than existing edge-lit LED TVs. LG’s full LED LCD models also features a 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio through enhanced dimming technology that divides the screen into 240 blocks. And with a refresh rate of 240 Hz, these TVs maintain a vibrant, smooth image even during fast-paced action scenes.

LG’s newest ultra-slim full LED LCD TVs employ patented technology that helps keep the overall chassis thickness down to just 24.8mm. This proprietary technology allows the LEDs to be spread-out horizontally and minimizes the distance between the LEDs and the screen. Another innovation offered for the first time in the new LED LCD TV is the enhanced wireless feature which eliminates the need for image compression. Content can be sent from DVD players, game consoles or home-theater units wirelessly without any degradation.

LG’s ultra-slim full LED LCD TV is priced at around KRW 7 million (approximately US$ 5,500) for the 55LH93 and around KRW 7.6 million (approximately US$ 5,900) for the 55LH95 model which will be launched in July 2009.

LG plans to aggressively expand the LED LCD TV business and is aiming for three to four million unit sales next year. Three different models of full LED LCD TVs will be offered to suit different market segments. The ultra-slim model will be positioned as the premium product with additional products in this category being announced later this year. The company will unveil less expensive 42-inch and 47-inch full LED LCD TVs by the end of the year without the ultra-slim feature.

LG is forecasting that the global LED LCD TV market will grow to 30 million units by next year and to 68 million by 2011, up from 3.1 million this year. LG is aiming to become the world’s second biggest seller of LCD TVs and predicts that the proportion of LCD TVs that feature LED technology will also grow from 2.6 percent this year to 20 percent next year and to 40 percent by 2011.

Most importantly, though, the image quality is excellent, as long as you’re feeding it a decent source. That needn’t just mean 1080p; the Cinema 21:9 copes admirably with standard definition DVDs, but Freeview is blocky and shows all the artifacts you’d expect. All in all, a stormer of an HDTV; it’s just a shame that the price will put it out of reach of most buyers.

Mio have released the first TV-enabled satnav units in the UK, the Mio Navman Spirit TV. First shown at the launch of the Spirit range back in May, the Spirit TV will be available in two versions – the 4.7-inch V505 and the 7-inch V735 – each with a touchscreen, Google search, TruMap and Junction views and of course Freeview digital TV with autotuning.

Each comes with a remote control, and can access the Freeview 7-day EPG for scheduling. The larger V735 also gets PMP functionality, including playback of videos and MP3s, together with a photo viewer and FM transmitter. All of the usual Spirit functionality is present, including NavPix geo-tagged photos, POIs and a pedestrian mode.

The Navman Spirit TV range will go on sale in the UK come July, priced at £299.99 ($493) for the V735 and £229 ($377) for the V505. More hands-on images of the new 7-inch Mio Navman Spirit V735 TV here. While Mio have not announced any plans to bring the Navman Spirit TV range to the US, the modular nature of the TV tuner would make a North America version technologically possible.

Press Release:

Mio brings Digital TV to the dashboard

Mio revolutionises sat nav with launch of first ultra-slim device with integrated Freeview tuner

London, UK, 22 June 2009: Leading sat nav company Mio today becomes the first to offer a range of products combining state-of-the-art satellite navigation with a digital TV, providing users with easy-to-use, multi-channel entertainment they can enjoy during breaks in the journey or at their final destination.
The Navman Spirit TV range continues Mio’s history of ground-breaking innovation in sat nav design and functionality. They are the perfect companion for family outings, driving holidays and camping trips, providing mobile entertainment when a destination has been reached. In addition, professionals who drive as part of their work (for example taxi drivers, truckers or salespeople), can use the Navman Spirit TV’s to relax and enjoy their favourite TV programmes or catch up on the latest news while on breaks between journeys. When not travelling, the Spirit TV can also be used as an additional portable TV for the home.
The Navman Spirit TV range comprises two highly portable, ultra-slim models – the V505 with a 4.7” widescreen, and the V735 with a stunning 7” widescreen.
Huw Bush, Head of UK Marketing, Mio, said: “Our existing range of sat-navs already encompasses photos and the ability to play MP3s and video, so a digital TV tuner is the natural next step in sat-nav innovation. The V505 and V735 combine our cutting-edge navigation with the ability to watch hundreds of digital TV channels across Europe – making it the perfect companion for family outings or professional drivers.”
Digital TV wherever you are
With their wide, flat displays, watching Digital TV on the V505 or V735 is a pleasure. The auto-tuning is easy to set up, so users can be viewing their favourite Freeview channels in seconds. Both models include a seven-day EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) which lists what’s on every available channel up to a week ahead. With two antennas available to facilitate the strongest signal, the simple touchscreen menu and remote control make finding programmes a breeze, and the sharp, bright picture and powerful speaker provide a great mobile TV experience.
The V735 also includes full media device functionality, enabling users to store and view video and photos, and listen to their favourite MP3 music tracks.
Spirit software and new slidetouch™ screen
The ‘Spirit’ part of the name refers to the software that powers the V735, V505 and the other recently released sat nav devices in the Spirit range. Redesigned from the ground up, Spirit uses a simple and colourful menu system that takes users to all of the features within a couple of ‘taps’. The new slidetouch™ screen brings up windows that glide on and off to help find what you are looking for quickly and easily, without needing to go back to the main menu unless you want to.
TruMap™ Views, Junction Views and lane guidance make navigation easy
Navman Spirit TV caters for all the basic sat nav functions, such as finding your destination easily, being aware of road speeds and safety cameras and helping the driver negotiate difficult junctions, with some important additions. To improve map clarity, Mio has added new TruMap™ Views that strip away clutter for a cleaner, much easier to read map display. New Junction Views have also been added, giving drivers an accurate representation of motorway signs in 3D as they approach an exit. Intelligent text-to-speech provides spoken next turn road names and directions, enabling drivers to keep their eyes on the road, and both models also include built-in Traffic with a lifetime subscription, meaning drivers can easily find ways around hold-ups and traffic hot spots.
Spoken navigation is now louder and clearer on the V735 with its built-in FM transmitter, allowing users to tune the device into their car speakers via the radio.
Go further with Explore Mode, Google Local™ and Wcities Travel Books
The Navman Spirit TV range also includes Mio’s suite of innovative new features that sets it apart from other sat nav devices, and helps drivers get a lot more out of their journeys.
First up is Explore Mode, an ingenious POI (Point of Interest) feature that really comes into its own when exploring new places. From any location in Europe, touching the map makes a cluster of icons ‘grow’ from that point. Users can immediately see what’s available in or near that location, from cash machines to hotels, museums and local attractions, car parks, restaurants and more. Zooming in on the map gives more location detail, while zooming out shows a wider choice of POIs. Touching any icon brings up a name and address, then by clicking ‘Go’ Navman will navigate there. Explore Mode works on the go, or can be used before drivers set off so they can plan POIs in advance.
Mio takes the idea of exploring even further with Travel Books from Wcities. Pre-loaded into every new Navman Spirit TV is a selection of Travel Books, featuring in-depth listings of places to eat, stay and visit, combined with facts and photos. There are hundreds more to choose from which can easily be downloaded onto the new devices.
Pedestrian mode – take shortcuts that your car can’t
Featuring the world’s most accurate walking mode, Navman Spirit TV also helps users explore more on foot. With built-in 2D city maps specially designed to work out of the car at walking pace, creating a seamless navigation experience. With details of footpaths and building outlines, each device works with the user to cut travel times.
Find your way with geo-tagged NavpixTM pictures
The Navman Spirit TV range also includes the market-leading NavPixTM geo-tagged photo navigation feature, pioneered by Mio in its previous Navman devices. With the built-in photo album, users can browse through a huge variety of pictures such as tourist sites, hideaway beaches, hotels and restaurants. As geo-tagging becomes more popular, and with over a million tagged photos free on NavPix and Flickr® websites, this feature really starts to come into its own.

The Navman Spirit TV range is available in stores in July. For more information please visit www.mio.com .

A global launch will follow on from Korean availability, as LG Display’s manufacturing scales up. The company is already selling mobile-phone scale OLED panels to two unspecified brands in Korea; ironically, though, LG’s own cellphone arm have decided not to use OLED at present, citing high cost and sub-230ppi resolution as their main concerns.

Kim also revealed that the company has no current plans to move into OLED lighting, and that while their flexible-OLED project with UDC continues it’s targeted initially at military applications. As for the OLED TV, no confirmed specifications but the original prototype ran at 1366 x 768 resolution and offered 1,000,000:1 contrast; we’ll have to wait and see what price-tag it carries.

The NV Classic’s media player will happily churn through your MP3, WAV, OGG and WMA audio files and MPEG1/4, WMV9 and Xvid videos, together with displaying JPEG and BMP images. Storage is via SDHC card, with iriver supplying two as standard: the first a 4GB card for your media, the second a mapping card for use with the NV Classic’s PND functionality. That seems a bit of an unnecessary fuss to us; we’d have preferred some internal memory for at least the map data.

Still, you also get a DMB tuner and on-screen control of channel presets for TV and radio, and there are twin 1.5W speakers and a car-kit. It’ll apparently be the equivalent of $264 when it lands in Korea; no word on availability outside of there as yet.
