Internet-based TV provider FilmOn has revealed a compact ATSC TV receiver dongle for iPhone, iPad, Android devices and Mac/PC users, the FilmOn AIR, promising mobile streaming and recording of free-to-air shows in the US. Set to retail for $95.95, or come bundled with a $149.95 annual FilmOn subscription, the FilmOn AIR comes as the company is embroiled in a lengthy legal battle with the traditional networks.

FilmOn launched back in September 2010 and soon found itself pulled into the courtroom, with CBS, NBC, ABC and FOX all arguing over whether it was legal to stream their network programming online. “The case is ongoing and FilmOn expects to settle the dispute this year” CEO Alki David claims, but until the networks green-light that content’s inclusion, the AIR dongle will act as a workaround.

Over 120 HD channels will continue to be delivered online, to the Windows and Mac apps as well as iOS and Android apps, while an update in February will add in support for the portable ATSC tuner. Together that should amount to a full line-up, or so FilmOn claims, along with video-on-demand options.

The FilmOn AIR tuner itself has a pass-through charger connection and a battery good for up to 5hrs use. It’s not entirely clear whether the same dongle is used on both Apple devices and Android devices – there looks to be both a USB port and a dock connector plug on offer.

This week at IFA 2011 we’ve gotten hands-on experiences with more than a couple awesome devices, but none of them is as strange and oddly enticing as this one: the Elgato EyeTV Mobile, aka the world’s first DTT/Freeview Tuner for the iPad 2. With this little bit of technology, you can turn your iPad 2 into a mobile television. Pause, rewind, and record at will. What we’ve got here is a quick look at this device as it exists at IFA 2011 this week – the real deal will be available sometime in late September in at least the UK and Germany, though will be sold through Elgato’s online store so you’ll be free to pick it up wherever you may live.

What you get is this little piece of hardware that you see in the photos above and below. What this little piece of hardware does is connect to your iPad 2′s dock connector, receiving then television signals without the aid of an internet connection. You’ll be able to download the EyeTV Mobile app from your iTunes App Store for free to work with the tuner in a very simple way. Want to get the weather report but don’t have an internet connection down on your farm? Plug the EyeTV Mobile tuner in to your iPad 2 and BAM! Weather channel.

The EyeTV Mobile receiver comes with several things; a miniature telescopic aerial (MCX), a rod aerial with magnetic base and removable suction cup, a USB charging cable (which, mind you, charges the EyeTV Mobile battery, not the iPad itself, and a printed Quick Start Guide. You’ll have to keep your iPad 2 charged up before you go about watching any television as your only port for charging will be taken up by this receiver which has no additional iPad cord port.

You’ll be able to record shows played through your iPad 2 then transfer them using iTunes to watch elsewhere – note that there’s no anti-copy protection in any of this.

Your iPad 2 will have to be working with iOS 4.3.3 or newer (not a problem if you’re up to date at this point,) and you’ll want to know that EyeTV Mobile supports MPEG-2 standard definition video only. MPEG-2 HD and MPEG-4/H.264 TV channels are not supported, neither are Freeview HD or DVC-T2. The EyeTV Mobile will be priced at EUR 99.95€/GBP 99.95£ and will be available in late September from Elgato at www.elgato.com or most computer retailers.

Sound like something you’re going to want to pick up?

You’ve probably got some means of playing music in your house. Whether it’s an old-school CD player (is that already “old-school?”), or your iPod connected to some kind of home speaker system, by now you’ve probably got the situation taken care of. But, if you’re looking for another option, or you’re still looking for that potentially perfect situation, then here’s an option from Grace Digital. Their brand new Tuner Wireless Radio & Media Player will let you plug it directly into your stereo system, and gain access to a plethora of listening options.

(Hopefully that will be in the manual.) You can even pick up Podcasts, as well as WiFi radio content.

The system itself has a built-in Ethernet port, as well as integrated WiFi 802.11g connectivity. As you can tell from the image, the Tuner looks about as basic as it could, with that black surface and those silver knobs and buttons, but obviously the connectivity options and Internet-enabled system makes it stand out amongst the music listening crowd. You can pick it up from Grace Digital’s website, or from many various retailers around the country. It will only set you back $219.99.

As well as the 250GB PS3, Sony Japan have also announced a new digital TV tuner peripheral for the console. The Sony Torne will drop in March 2010, and offer Japanese buyers a way to watch digital terrestrial TV broadcasts on their PS3, together with PVR functionality that allows for recording content (either to the PS3′s HDD or a connected USB 2.0 drive) even while the PS3 is being used for gaming, Blu-ray playback or just in standby mode.

Once you’ve recorded a show – using the new on-screen GUI which shows all the available channels – you can then load it onto a Memory Stick Micro M2 or Memory Stick Pro Duo and slot that into your PSP for watching on the move. Footage will automatically be optimized for the PSP’s display; alternatively, if you have WiFi access while out, you can use remote play to control the Torne and watch streaming content on your PSP.

It’s all reminiscent of the PlayTV peripheral launched in Europe back in 2008, which basically offered the same digital TV recording/time-shifting but for European broadcasts. Sony Torne for PS3 will arrive in Japan come March 2010, priced at 9,980 yen ($109).

The Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition can be used with AMD’s OverDrive 3.0 software to easily overclock and generally tune the CPU’s performance. It will also carry a lower price tag than existing triple- or quad-core Phenom II chips, though AMD have not revealed specific pricing.

As for the ATI Theater HD 750, that will be available in PCI Express, USB stick and other formats, and offer NTSC, PAL/SECAM, ATSC, ClearQAM and DVB-T reception in one device. In addition to using it with a Windows Media Center setup, it can also be used to record H.264, AVI, MPEG, DivX, WMV and MPEG4 files for use on PMPs. Again, no specific details on pricing or availability.

With new features continue to evolve in digital frames, it’s hard to differ nowadays’ photo frames from PMP or MID devices. They stay stationary and much bigger but not longer burden a single role digital slideshow device for photo display. A recent Japanese frame maker even went as far as incorporating a digital TV tuner.

We’ve seen digital frames with weather forecast, Wifi, OLED touchscreen, DLNA-compliant and many of them incorporate music and video playbacks. By-Design DP-1001DW is a step ahead with a built-in Terrestrial digital tuner to receive Japanese broadcasting on its 10.2-inch display with 800×480 pixel resolution. The LCD is capable of 300 cd/m2 brightness and 200:1 contrast. In additional of tuning digital signals, it reads JPEG, WMA and Dvix media files from an onboard 64MB memory, USB connected storage or memory readers from SD, MMC, memory stick PRO, Duo and PRO Duo.

Estimated price tag at 49,800 yen ($540), the By-Design DP-1001DW is out of reach for a digital frames, not to mention the tuner is not operable in US region, the $900 Kodak’s OLED frame looks like a much-geeky investment.

Check out the video demo after the cut

The MOBView is battery powered (with a removable power-pack) and aside from a power button there appear to be no controls on the tuner unit itself. It looks to come with a separate TV app for your Windows Mobile smartphone, which allows you to search for channels.

Range and resistance to interference both seem good. Details on the MOBView are scant, with no suggestion of when (or if) the product will reach the market, and if it does so what sort of price tag it might carry.

When the iPhone first came out, many pundits suggested it would be pretty much ignored in Japan where high-tech mobile devices are commonplace. That, of course, ignored the legendary Apple lust-factor, and the sheer usability of the handset; however, it’s proved tricky to ween the Japanese public off their feature-overload, and so, caving to public demand, carrier Softbank have announced a 1-Seg TV tuner for the iPhone 3G.

As well as mobile digital television you get a battery capable of powering up to 3hrs of continuous 1-Seg viewing, and which recharges in 2-4hrs. It plugs into the iPhone 3G’s dock connector with a suitably long cable so you can hide the tuner in a bag or (capacious) pocket.

By the time it launches in mid-December (Japan only, obviously) there’ll be a free 1-Seg program in the AppStore to use it with. No word on price or monthly subscription costs as yet.

Pinnacle have announced their latest two USB TV tuners, the PCTV HD Stick and the PCTV HD Pro Stick. As with their predecessors, both tuners can receive free digital HD and SD TV over-the-air (ATSC) channels; however, they now support unencrypted digital cable (ClearQAM) channels. The tuner/demodulator itself has also been upgraded, and is now more sensitive for improved reception of both analog and digital TV.

Resolutions up to 1080i are supported, and Pinnacle supply their TVCenter Pro software that allows the computer to act as a PVR. TimeShift and recording of SD and HD TV is possible, together with full-screen or windowed viewing, and there’s an EPG for scheduling recordings. Interestingly, recordings can take place either to the hard-drive or directly to a DVD. Alternatively, both models are certified for Microsoft’s Media Center products.

The HD Pro Stick adds stereo sound for both digital and analog TV, stereo FM radio reception and the ability to capture a video signal from a cable/satellite set-top box or camcorder with the included A/V adapter cable. DivX support is also added, and a trial of MPEG-4 encoding software for making clips compatible with iPods or the PSP.

On sale now, the Pinnacle PCTV HD Stick is priced at $69.99 and the PCTV HD Pro Stick at $99.99.

Press Release:

New Pinnacle PCTV HD Sticks Deliver HDTV on a PC

Sleek, Ultra-mobile USB Sticks Add Support for Digital Cable TV

MANHATTAN, NY, June 25, 2008 – Pinnacle Systems, Inc., the consumer division of Avid Technology Inc. (Nasdaq: AVID) , highlighted today the next generation of its Pinnacle PCTV™ HD Stick, and Pinnacle PCTV™ HD Pro Stick—the number one selling TV tuner for PCs in the U.S. retail market in 2007, according to NPD. In addition to delivering free digital HD and SD TV over-the-air (ATSC), these new Pinnacle PCTV HD and HD Pro Sticks now support unencrypted digital cable (ClearQAM) channels and include a next-generation tuner/demodulator with more sensitive reception of both analog and digital TV signals and, in the case of the PCTV HD Pro Stick, even FM radio.

About the size of a flash drive, the new Pinnacle PCTV HD Sticks provide consumers with the brilliant sharpness of digital HDTV with resolutions up to 1080i, by simply plugging the device into a USB port on their PC. The addition of ClearQAM support allows cable TV subscribers to enjoy their favorite over-the-air (OTA) digital channels with optimal quality by connecting the digital cable directly to their PC.

The affordable, easy-to-use Pinnacle PCTV HD and HD Pro Sticks are for laptop users, travelers and students, who want to experience HD-quality TV at home or on-the-go without having to pay expensive service fees. They are also compelling solutions for Windows Vista™ and Windows®XP MCE owners who did not purchase a PC TV tuner with their systems.

“With the February 17th, 2009 shut down of analog television approaching, users are considering cost-effective alternatives to paying for cable and satellite TV or buying a new HD TV,” said Tanguy Leborgne, Pinnacle Systems Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. “At just $99 U.S., the new PCTV HD Pro Stick can provide consumers with savings of up to $1,000 on their subscription fees and it even works as a Personal Video Recorder (PVR). All you need is your laptop or desktop computer.”

The Pinnacle TVCenter Pro software bundled with the new tuners delivers fully functional PVR capabilities that make it easy to watch, TimeShift and record SD and HD TV. For added convenience, users have the option of viewing programs in full-screen mode or in a scalable window while using other applications. An integrated Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) is included to locate programs and schedule recordings. Shows can be recorded to the user’s hard drive or direct to DVD for playback on a DVD player.

The new Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro Stick offers all of these features plus a broad range of additional capabilities ranging from stereo sound for both digital and analog TV, stereo FM radio reception and the ability to capture a video signal from a cable/satellite set-top box or camcorder with the A/V adapter cable provided. It also supports the DivX® format and includes a trial version for MPEG-4 support which enables output to a PSP™ or iPod®.

Pricing, Availability
The Pinnacle PCTV HD Stick and the Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro Stick are available through leading retailers and online resellers with U.S. pricing at $69.99 and $99.99 respectively. Both devices are fully certified for Windows Vista™ and Windows® Media Center.

TV addicts looking for PVR functionality on their PS3 will have to wait a while longer for Sony’s PlayTV device, is the official statement from the company. PlayTV, which is a twin-tuner accessory compatible with over-the-air digital TV – such as the Freeview system in the UK – was first announced at the Leipzig games show in Germany last year. Amazon.co.uk recently put up a pre-order page for the gadget, pricing it at £59.99 ($118.82) for a July 31st launch; however, that has since been taken down.

“We have yet to announce a release date and price for PlayTV, and do not comment on rumour or speculation” Sony spokesperson

In fact, Sony are still refusing to suggest any firm release date or pricing for the hardware. David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, initially claimed the PlayTV would be priced between $135 and $200. Back in February a release of March 28th and $150 pricetag were reported, but this subsequently proved false.

The device will turn the PS3 into a DVR, allowing two programmes to be simultaneously recorded to the console’s hard-drive. Alternatively, one could be watched while another records. Those recordings can then be transferred to a PSP for remote viewing; Sony have previously confirmed that they will not be adding any DRM to the files.

This is the successor to the Cube 2 and will hopefully have a better user interface as that was one of CNet’s main complaints of the Cube 2. It still has the OLED screen, FM Tuner, and 2GB of storage space.

This player also has support for MP3 and WMA formats which makes it PlaysForSure compatible. Other than the relatively low storage capacity, possibly difficult to navigate UI, there is the $99 price that you’ll have to get over.

However, this may be one of the few MP3 players that you wouldn’t look like a tool with it dangling from your neck. So if you are female this could be as much a fashion accessory as a place to store some music, it will be out May 1st.

The BZ100 has a 250GB HDD with the BZ200 doubling that. The HDD combined with the Blu-Ray recording capability mean these things can simultaneously record two digital broadcast programs in HD.

They support MPEG-4 video compression, have Digital and Analog TV tuners, HDMI, and TiVo-like support (I presume this means a similar EPG) and they also come with a standard remote alongside the programmable touch-screen one. They go on sale in Japan in May, hopefully they make it to the US at the same time or shortly thereafter.

There is an RDS-TMC tuner, 12-Channel GPS receiver, On-Board Gyroscope (so the map can automatically re-orientate itself when you turn) and Voice Recognition as well as Text-To-Speech for up to 6 European languages. No word whether you can get US maps or if its European only.

It doesn’t appear to have a screen built into it, so it looks like its on you for that, but Clarion has some pretty amazing solutions for that problem as well. One hurdle you’ll have to get over on your own though is the £795 price tag which converts to almost exactly twice that in USD.

You would think that if someone was going to put out the money for a system like this, it would be a bit more practical than this particular system is. However this thing is loaded with all HD and SD goodness that you could possibly want from top to bottom.

It has a 7.1 channel HD receivers, HD video distribution system, and can disperse music in up to 12 different zones. There is a Control4 system for home automation control, an in-wall iPod dock with content navigation and control, and a 400 disc DVD/CD changer with a management system.

There is also a Blu-Ray disc player and AM, FM, XM, and Sirius tuners. The confusing part is where it only has 160GB of storage space on the music server, everyone in the industry is trying to pack in as many terabytes as humanly possible to satiate their customers and Sony comes to the table with a 160GB, something I could find in my iPod. There is of course some customization available, base price for one of these rackmounted systems is $40k and tops out at about $85k, enjoy.

In fact that’s what its name is short for, so you are wondering, how can a canopy bed be high fidelity? Well, its simple, there is a projector, sound system, and projection screen that you can’t readily see, all built in.

You can kind of see the lens from the projector and slivers of a couple of speakers, but that’s it. The screen obviously rolls down above the foot of the bed, and then I assume somewhere else in the bed there is a tuner, DVD player, or at the very least inputs and space to store and connect your own.

So, not only does this canopy look amazing design wise, but the functionality that is built in as well makes it all that more useful. I want one, and if you do to (the difference being you might have the funds to afford it) you can contact Edoardo Carlino, the Italian designer who made the thing.

It’s an HD network multimedia play that is also a PVR and HDTV Tuner. It can playback HD (and I assume SD is no problem either) content from its hard drive, USB ports, or from any computer connected to it via the local area network.

You can also record HDTV from OTA sources with this thing. Also, the advanced DVD play back allows you to rip the DVDs into .ISO or .IFO disc images and play them back just like the original DVD with menus and everything.

It has 3xUSB, HDMI, Optical, S-Video, 2xCoax, Ethernet, Component, Stereo RCA, Multi I/O, and AC in ports, some of those are outputs though. Sadly the HDTV tuner is a separate attachment, but it just clips onto the bottom maintaining the trash can form factor if you buy one. Its available now on Amazon for $520.

The Qosmio G45-AV690 is an amazing laptop with it being the first notebook with an HD-DVD R/RW drive being one of the many new features. It’s a 17-inch notebook with a 1080p resolution for HD-DVD playback. This Toshiba laptop also has the OpenCable or OCUR chipset in it allowing you to have a digital tuner for recording digital or analog TV both over the air or from a Digital cable service and even allows the use of a CableCard.

It has an Intel Core 2 Duo T9300 processor, nVidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics, 3 gigs of RAM two HDDs for a total of 320GB of storage (no RAID is currently available with those, I asked). There is also WiFi A/G/N, a remote control, a built in mic and webcam as well as a fingerprint reader integrated into the touch pad.

As far as media controls, you have two separate silver dial looking things that control media as well as the included remote control, and this thing runs some version of Vista that has MCE built in so its either Premium or Ultimate (if I had to guess, Ultimate). It has a base price of just over $3000.

Allow me to list just the technology stuffed in this thing that allows it to tune itself, there are locking servo powered tuners in the tuning keys, there is a CPU in the neck, which is all controlled by they Tune-Control Bridge, a Tune Core Controller, Data-Transmitting Tailpiece and much more. To tune it, automatically, obviously, because why would you buy this to tune it yourself, you select A440 tuning or there are 5 other presets.

Then you hit the control knob and strum the guitar once and the robotic ears allow these things to automatically tune everything. It does it one string at a time, and as it works, there are lights on the volume knob that light up.

The best part, is that all of this tech doesn’t add hardly any weight to the guitar, so, you can quickly tune your guitar and get straight to the music without adding a ton of weight. If you want one, you can pick one up now for $2500.

Alright, that was all mostly from the press release, but I just saw this thing, not only does this thing look amazing (with a touch of geek on the back with a window to view most of the tech stuff), they have different colors. I mentioned the available presets, yeah, you can also program your own tuning styles. The best part, all of this actually works, the guy got up on stage, strummed the guitar, it was horribly out of tune, he hit the knob, strummed the strings a couple time, hit the button again so it would start outputting audio again, and then he started playing, it literally took me more time to type that than it did for the guitar to tune itself.

It has a Core 2 Duo E6320, a gig of RAM, a 160GB HDD, and a DVD burner. It also appears to come with a media center remote signifying a possible TV tuner, and since it comes with Windows Vista, its probably Vista Home Premium or Ultimate to make use of the Media Center app.

The PC also has Bluetooth and Dolby Digital Live audio technology, which means it should be a great fit for your home theater set up. On a side note, at the same time as this announcement, they announced a Pink Asus Eee PC for sale in Taiwan. The Nova will cost you a hard-to-swallow $1020 USD if/when it lands stateside.

So, Black Friday (this Friday for those not in the know) is fast approaching and that means that millions of people in the retail industry will seriously consider suicide as a possible alternative to finishing their shift. It also means that there will be tons of stuff on sale for dirt cheap.

A large portion of that stuff will be electronics, computers, home theater equipment, you name it, the US is probably one of, if not the largest markets for consumer electronics and Black Friday is a great excuse to move a few units out the door. One such product that many cost savvy consumers will be looking for is the coveted uber cheap notebook.

Our friends over at Notebooks.Com have compiled a full list of all the Black Friday laptop sales, and there are some good deals too. If you want to see the full list, check out the via link, but here are a few notable examples:

The coveted $300 or less laptop comes from Circuit City this year, several stores have a sub $400 laptop, but Circuit City has the cheapest one at $299 after a $350 discount. It’s the Compaq Presario C717nr which has a Core Duo (not Core 2 Duo) T2310, a 15.4” LCD, an 80GB HDD, a gig of RAM, and a DVD burner and comes pre-loaded with Vista.

CompUSA has some sales on Apple notebooks including a MacBook with a 5% discount and a MacBook Pro for $100 off. The MacBook is the 2.16GHz version and the MBP is the 2.2GHz 15.4” one.

The last one I am going to list is the HP Dragon from CompUSA, it’s the HDX9010NR and its $2599 after a $400 discount. If you don’t know, this is HP’s 20.1” laptop, this particular model has a C2D T 7500, a 240GB HDD, 2GB of RAM, an HD-DVD ROM drive, Vista Ultimate, integrated webcam, and a TV Tuner. This laptop is amazing specs wise but is only portable in the same way a pocket bike fits in your pocket, as in, its not.

Well, like I said, click on through to see the whole list, its kind of lengthy, and who knows, they could have what you have been looking for, in which case I’d feel obligated to cross everyone else off my Christmas list and think about myself only. But that’s just me, Happy Holidays.

How digital are they? They come with a built in DVB-T tuner, this thing is so ready for the switch.

However, if you live in the UK and want to get a new TV that prepares you for the switch, but you don’t have coverage of the digital signal yet, its ok, this TV still has an analog tuner too. The DVB-T tuner will support all the freeview channels, and you can go into interactive mode too, but no Freeview Playback support.

For connectivity you get 2 SCART, 2 HDMI, and an S-Video port. You also get VESA wall mounts and a 8ms response time. All of that for £399 for the 32” and £519 for the 37” models and you can get them now online, if you live in the UK.

You don’t believe its thin and light? Well peep this, its 35mm thick, that’s a number, then for the lightness, look at the runway model carrying one and stopping to pose after strutting out with the screen in hand.

I am pretty sure a good sign of something being light is how easily a runway model can carry eat and still look good. Part of the reason its so light is because they’ve separated the actual screen, and all the other junk that usually comes built into back/side of the TVs.

The separated media station has a TV tuner, a bunch of connectors, and a rather unique S-iVDR slot that basically allows the base station to act as a DVR storing the media on your choice of SD or MMC cards. You can connect the Media station via HDMI or through and optional wireless transmitter. You can get the TV’s in 37 or 42 inch sizes, both offering FullHD, the 37-inch model should be available by the end of the year and the 42-inch model some time after the start of next year. No word on price though, but I wouldn’t expect them to be cheap, oh, and they only appear to be available in select Asian markets anyways.

The first in the line is the PC-AX30v with a 1.6GHz Celeron processor, 1GB of DDR2, and a 160GB HDD. That’s perfect for not doing much more than surfing the internet on and storing media one.

The second is the PC-AX80V which has the same specs but adds a TV tuner and HDMI input. This brings the desktop line even closer to being fully integrated into your home theater.

The third and final model is the PC-AZ120v, its packing some heat with a 1.66GHz Intel C2D T5500 and a 250GB HDD. Pass that, all the models have card readers, DL DVD-R/RW drives, HDM/VGA out, Firewire, and USB 2.0. Tack onto that the really nice looking media remote and the wireless keyboard with a touch-pad built into it and you quite clearly have a desktop system that is tailored to connect to your TV and act as a computer, but in your home theater. No word on price, but they should be out in the next couple months.

The other bundle just has a 32MB MS Duo and loses the stand as well. That’s the only two ways you can get this new limited edition “Deep Red” PSP.

Personally, I like this color, it looks to be comparable to the “Cobalt” DS Lite that was released not too long ago. Regardless, you can only get it in Japan, and you can only get in one of those two bundles, no word on price or when you’ll be able to pick one up though.

And, like I said, you can listen to DAB radio with it. One of these days we might see something like DAB stateside, but somehow I doubt it.

Anyways, for those that have it, you know how great it is, those that don’t, keep guessing. If you don’t have an iPod already, then buy a different MP3 player that already has a DAB radio tuner built in, but if you do and just want to add DAB to it, this will do in a pinch. The biggest downside is that this thing will cost you a little more than $100.

This cell phone has a 3.2 inch screen with a resolution of 480×854, a contrast ratio of 2000:1, and support for up to 26 million colors. Oh yeah, there is also the standard widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio.

Alright, so not too long ago I reported on a potential new SKU, the Xbox 360 Ultimate which was supposedly going to be the Elite, but with an integrated HD-DVD drive. That, so far hasn’t happened, but this new announcement could give way to just that.

Or, they could just bundle the current separate HD-DVD drive with an Xbox 360 Elite since they probably have a ton of HD-DVD drives just sitting around. Although the drives have been selling like crazy thanks to all the rebates, price cuts, and other deals.

Other additions that came with this rumor, that sound extremely outrageous are a larger hard drive (more than 120GB? I haven’t even used the 20 that came with mine), dual HDTV tuners, an MP3 player docking port (where? The dual orientation capabilities of the 360 would prevent this no?), and a quieter system (this one might actually happen). No idea how much that bundle would cost, but it would definitely bump HD-DVD sales in the same cheatorous way that Sony did with Blu-Ray, and it would make for an Xbox that’s more suitable for IPTV or DVR functionality, which we could theoretically see any day now.

Portable TV tuners have reached such a low price point that one of the only ways for profit-seeking manufacturers to turn is HDTV; for the entertainment-seeking road warrior, that means a new generation of portable television that promises super-high resolution. However, with even standard definition tuners sometimes suffering from poor quality except when used with a fixed aerial, the difficulty is not in building the USB dongle itself but an antenna capable of receiving a strong enough signal. TabletPCReview picked up Plextor’s PX-HDTV500U to see if it could manage.

The aerial supplied with the PX-HDTV500U has to be one of the oddest I’ve seen; at first, I thought it was being photographed in front of the tuner’s retail packaging, but in fact it really does have an oblong mini-billboard apparently laced with some sort of flexible composite. Plextor also include a remote control and software capable of viewing and recording TV.

“Plextor’s PX-HDTV500U Mini Digital HDTV Receiver is an excellent device for any road warrior, traveler, or student looking for a solution in the field of portable televisions. The simplicity and ease of use will most definitely have users falling in love with the idea of watching television on one’s computer”TabletPCReview

Check out the full review if you’re interested in mobile HDTV viewing.

So the PSP can play games, play all sorts of media, be hacked to play emulators, and can do GPS. Now, thanks to those geniuses that Sony seems to be raising from birth, it can also play wireless television signals on its screen.

All it takes is a nifty little adapter that connects to the top of the PSP that has a telescopic antenna for the best reception. The picture quality is reported to be great, most of that was attributed to the handset’s amazing screen.

AkihabraNews were the lucky ones to get their hands on one of these (and to be living somewhere that has wireless TV). I am still kind of wondering if there is any programming info that comes through that thing or if you just kind of have to know what channels play what, guess I will never know since for some dumb reason the US still has yet to upgrade to the new wireless TV and radio standards our Eurasian friends get to enjoy.

First off, I want to state that I am perturbed by the fact that we still don’t have this wireless TV technology over here, sure the fact that the number of people per square mile in most oriental countries is considerably higher, allowing for a larger customer base for short range wireless devices, but still. Anyways, they have been blessed with another portable TV equipped with DVB-T and a 7” screen.

The DVB-T even supports the EPG programming guide and teletext. There is also a lengthy list of codecs supported, starting with WAV, AAC, MP3, WMA, M-JPEG, MPEG1,2,4 , JPEG, and DivX.

I know devices with 7” screens aren’t usually considered too terribly portable, but this one is equipped with a Lithium Polymer battery for just that purpose. The screen albeit large, has a fairly low resolution, sitting at 480×234 and contrast of 300:1. As far as expansion goes, there are card readers for the following formats: CF, SD, MMC, MS, xD, SMC, and Microdrives. There is a remote, a pair of speakers cranking out a whole 2 watts of sound and a vehicle power adapter.

This DVD player provides near-MCE level functionality. It has a DVD player and recorder, a TV tuner/recorder, and an integrated HDD for storage of media.

You can use the Guide Plus+ TV guide that is included to schedule recordings and simultaneously play them back. No price, or really even a definite word whether it’s been released yet, but generally when it comes to Bang & Olufsen, you better start saving now.

The hardware encoding makes it so you can easily digitize all sorts of media including video cassettes and laserdiscs. The encoder outputs in MPEG-2, but the included software makes it fairly easy to automatically convert for several other formats.

Sadly it only picks up ATSC signals, but it can pick them up real well since it has inputs just for things to connect to larger, external antennas. Software wise it comes with Roxio’s Toast 8 Basic CD/DVD recording software. Its available now at the Apple store for $200.
