If you love the idea of the ASUS Transformer Prime, but can’t quite justify throwing that much money at it, the ASUS Transformer Pad 300 is a slightly more affordable alternative that doesn’t disappoint in the specs department either. The Transformer Pad 300 is now available to pre-order on Amazon for $399.99, and will start shipping on April 22nd.

Spec wise, the tablet is very similar to the Transformer Prime. You’re looking at a 10.1-inch screen with a 1280×800 resolution, 1.2Ghz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. You’ll also be getting the latest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich. An eight megapixel shooter can be found on the back, for those who love using their tablet as a camera, and you’ll be able to record 1080p video too.

It’s not quite the svelte package that the Transformer Prime offered though, coming in a little thicker at 9.3mm as opposed to the Prime’s 8.3mm. There’s also no sign of the keyboard dock for the Pad 300 yet, although we expect it will make an appearance in due course. The keyboard dock for the prime commands a $140 price premium, so expect to pay roughly the same here too.

ASUS has said previously that LTE and HSPA+ models of the Pad 300 also be available. No word on when we’ll be seeing them, but we’ll keep an eye out and let you know.

UPDATE: The original story incorrectly listed the price as $489.99. Amazon’s retail price is $399.99, but a third-party seller is listed instead with an increased price.

Here at Mobile World Congress the ASUS event was a big one. With tons of new announcements, exciting Tegra 3 tablets not to mention the Padfone and more. Two big changes came from the event. That being the new naming scheme as all tablets will be called “Transformer Pad” and that they’ll be releasing a variety of 3G/4G LTE equipped tablets coming as soon as late April.

From here on out all the ASUS tablets will be called Transformer Pad instead. Today they’ve announced the Transformer Pad 300 series, the ASUS Padfone, and the 700 series will be called the Transformer Pad Infinity. No weird titles that will be confusing or numbers that will get everyone confused. Simply Transformer Pad.

This same approach is slowly being taken by most of the different manufacturers around the Android ecosystem to try and streamline products into an easy and simple to remember line that consumers will want. We have plenty more hands-on pictures coming soon so stay tuned for full details and pictures.

Here at the ASUS conference at MWC 2012 ASUS has just unveiled the much rumored Transformer 300T we’ve seen leaked various times. Complete with the new Transformer naming scene that will be “Transformer Pad” for all tablets moving forward. The 300 series marks a first along with the Padfone for ASUS, and comes with 3G/4G LTE connectivity. We have all the details and hands-on below.

Similar to almost every other tablet thus far we have a 10″ 1280 x 800 resolution display and dual cameras but that is where the similarities end. Just like the Transformer Prime the 300 series features the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 16 or 32GB of internal storage and awesome cameras. The rear 8 megapixel camera has a lightning fast f/2.2 shutter for excellent pictures and a 1.3 front for video chat.

Complete with three different color options as the image above shows we have red, blue, and silver versions available. With the Tegra 3 processor efficiency the tablet is slated for 10 hours of battery life, and boasted to 15 with the optional accessory dock. Along with it comes the usual 8GB of free ASUS Web Storage for those needing extra space.

Previously thought to be the Transformer 2 we now know the 300 series will basically be just that, and their new budget-aimed slate. No exact details on pricing or availability were released but enjoy the hands-on below and stay tuned for more details coming shortly.
