‘Toshiba’ Stories

Intel’s Atom N270 processor – and the surrounding limitations on specifications – had a lot to answer for: over a year of cookie-cutter netbooks. With the advent of Pine Trail, Intel look to be loosening their grip on the segment a little, at least, but does the Atom N450 offer a genuine improvement over its well-worn predecessor? Toshiba sent over their latest netbook, the Mini NB305; check out the full SlashGear review after the cut.

We have already heard most of the details on the Toshiba M780 Tablet and Satellite Pro U500 laptop previously. There were a couple details about the devices that we didn’t know like pricing and availability for the machines. Toshiba has now announced those extra details.

Who would’ve thought memory cards could be so full of intrigue.  Andrew “bunnie” Huang – whose name you might remember from inside the chumby One – was prompted to investigate an apparent bad batch of Kingston microSD cards when the touchscreen widget device (which stores its OS on a microSD) started acting up.  He went on to discover that his dodgy batch was in fact the tip of a fake card iceberg, which seems to suggest Kingston’s suppliers have been producing so-called “ghost shift” fakes during factory downtime, with Kingston’s brand but serious quality shortcomings.

Toshiba’s two new Windows Mobile 6.5 devices ended up a little overshadowed by Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 launch, which is a shame since we’re hoping the company has learnt its lesson from the mediocre TG01.  One of our biggest complaints was the poor custom UI; that’s been replaced with a slick new 3D interface, which looks pretty impressive on the 4.1-inch WVGA display.  It also does duty on the Toshiba K01, which basically takes the TG02 and adds a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Toshiba have outed two new smartphones at Mobile World Congress 2010, and as expected they follow on from their TG01 Snapdragon-based Windows Mobile handset.  The Toshiba TG02 is the most obvious successor, a 9.99mm-thick handset with an expansive 4.1-inch capacitive WVGA touchscreen and a 1GHz processor; the Toshiba K01, meanwhile, has the same 1GHz processor with a 4.1-inch OLED capacitive touchscreen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Toshiba’s latest tablet, the Portégé M780, has broken cover, and if you’re in the market for a 12.1-inch convertible based on Intel’s latest Core i3 and Core i5 processors, then join the queue.  The M780 weighs in at 2kg and has an onboard DVD burner, together with up to 8GB DDR3 memory, a 2.5-inch HDD or SSD and WiFi b/g/n.

It’s been months since we’ve heard anything about the Toshiba TG02, the successor to the mediocre TG01, but with Mobile World Congress 2010 just over a week away there’s some action at the FCC.  A device listed as the Toshiba TG02 has cleared through, and while there are no photos of the handset itself, we do now know what sort of connectivity it will deliver.

toshibae205 sgYou might recall that the Toshiba Satellite E205 was unveiled at CES this month as a Best Buy exclusive machine and we talked about it a bit at the time. When we first heard about the notebook, it was pegged at a price of $999. The coolest feature of the notebook was certainly the wireless display tech that it includes for streaming video to your TV without needing wires.
