iPad users will now have more access to traditional magazines than ever before. Today, Time Inc. announced plans to bring its entire publishing portfolio of 21 magazines to the iPad before the end of 2011. The company already offers digital versions for four of its biggest magazines, including Sports Illustrated, Time, Fortune, and People, which will now be joined by other popular titles such as Entertainment Weekly, In Style, and Real Simple.

Time’s “all-access” digital strategy offers users several subscription options, including single issues, digital-only subscriptions, and bundles that provide both the print and digital editions. The company is hoping that if digital editions are bundled with print subscriptions that customers are more likely maintain print, which the company still sees as its main revenue model and the measurement for its ad rates.

Some of the Time’s digital titles have already been available to iPads, Android tablets, and the HP TouchPad. But they will soon be available to the Barnes & Noble Nook Color e-reader as well. The company announced that an agreement with Barnes & Noble to start selling digital subscriptions and single issues of some of its titles to Nook users will start in August.

At least throw a toothpick in or something. Still the Swiss Army Watch is pretty cool and much tougher than you are.

The watch is good to a depth of 20,000 feet where the arm attached to it may be crushed to a pulp, but you could still get the time of your own demise. The watch can also withstand a gunshot and being blown up by a stick of dynamite.

That kind of toughness sounds cool and all, plus the watch is attractive. The big catch is that the thing costs over $4,400. It also sports Valjoux COSC-certification, whatever that means. Do people still wear watches today? I haven’t owned one in years. At least you can wash your hands with this thing on with no fear.

Now, in an effort to get the channel back on these services, FEARnet is working on a petition. It’s currently located on Facebook and they are working to sign up as many new members as possible. With enough support, the fan page might help towards getting Time Warner to put FEARnet back on the air.

So, if you’re a fan of all things horror and thriller, you might want to consider joining up. You can watch the video recruitment message for the petition below:

Time Warner Cable announced that they will be introducing an unlimited package (0f sorts) for $150 a month once their new data caps are put into effect. The company received harsh criticism for this decision to implement data caps and Landel Hobbs, COO of TWC, took to the web to clarify their services and what users can expect under the policy change.

The package is actually “virtually unlimited” and called the Turbo package. It will cost $75 a month and provide you with 100GB of usage. However, there are overage charges associated this this plan. The cost is $1/GB for each that’s over 100GB. However, once you reach $75 in charges, you aren’t charged anymore. This is what makes the plan unlimited. Sort of.

Other packages include the Limited Package for super light users at a rate of 1GB/month (768KB down, 128KB up) with $2/GB overage charges. There are also the Road Runner Lite, Basic, and Standard packages that offer 10GB, 20GB and 40GB caps, respectively. These feature a $1/GB overage charge. In all honesty, this idea of “capping” the data cap overage charges themselves is a bit odd. Wouldn’t a $150/month unlimited plan make the most sense?

There sure have been a lot of new high-tech watches out there over the past few months. The newest concept comes from a Belgium Product design student by the name of Nicolas Meiresonne. The Torus concept watch uses color and a touchscreen to tell the approximate time.

This bracelet style watch was designed to give the user a perception of time and some sort of experience. Very similar to the sun, you will not get the actual time just approximate time of day. The colors on the watch rotate to tell what time of day it is. For example blue/green represents morning, yellow/orange the afternoon, red/purple for evening and nighttime.

Not exactly sure how, but tapping the touchscreen will allow users to set alarms. Apparently by double tapping a color a timer will be set. Though there is not much of a use for such a watch in today’s world, we certainly find this device interesting to say the least. This watch would definitely be a site to see in real life if it ever makes it to market.

Back in the day buying something and it being outdated the day you got it wasn’t out of the norm. However it also wasn’t that big of a deal since by the time the next big product was announced you already had your new stuff and you were happy with it, because you had it now unlike all your friends who had to wait on the next greatest thing to actually arrive. These days the game is a lot different though.

With ship dates being pushed back at an alarming rate in today’s tech industry, be it due to production issues, shipping delays, or quality assurance problems, almost every major product that gets a release date along with its announcement gets that date pushed back. That’s not even the real issue at question here, what do you do when you pre-order the latest, greatest, and best product there is and then a similar product comes out before your pre-order is shipped?

Things are actually happening that fast, gone are the days when the next best product is announced around the same time as the product you ordered is being delivered. Now new products are being shoved out the door so fast and so competitively that in some situations, due to delays, the next best thing is already being sold at brick and mortar stores by the time your product gets shipped.

Take for example the CloudBook, it was hyped up to the hilt all the way until its release date, then less than a week later, while shipments were still suffering delays in China, it was already being made old news by the new HP 2133. How do manufacturers deal with such adversities?

My best recommendation is to make launch dates and announcement dates a lot closer so your product doesn’t lose all its hype before you can actually sell the damned thing. On the consumer side you are stuck with the same dilemmas, how do you as a consumer determine whether you should go ahead and get what is possibly the subpar product or do you cancel your order and go with the new widget?

I can no longer base my major electronics purchases on the actual products because they get bested by competitors so quickly. These days I’ve been driven to base my decisions on which product I think more other people will buy or which product will have the largest community of users behind it or which one is from the more reliable, consistent Company. No longer can I make my purchasing decisions based on such arbitrary things as which product is actually the better product.

What do you think manufacturers could do to solve or help eliminate some of this overlap? Or, do you think this type of overlap is better for the market and shouldn’t be ended, but encouraged? Most importantly, if you were put in a situation where you had to choose between going with the product you’ve already ordered and the one coming out in a couple weeks, what would/have you do(ne)?

The JavaBot is, as you guessed, a robot that makes you coffee. The thing is, it’s not your usual fare of inserting pre-ground coffee that sucks and then it brewing and pouring it, this robot does it all short of picking the beans itself.

It starts with raw or green coffee beans, it roasts them, and then it sends them to the grinder and grinds them. From there it uses water, presumably at least filtered if not purified, and brews you your coffee, quite literally from start to finish.

The best part is that it does all of that, from start to finish, in roughly the time it would take you to get your coffee at Starbucks, probably less. There are 13 glass tube-shaped bins for the beans, 6 hold green beans, the other 7 hold roasted beans, and each one has a scale built in which is probably used to let the employees know when the green beans need refilled and to keep the machine from roasting more beans than are being used so that they are fresh as possible. Pneumatic tubes are used to move the beans to the grinder, kind of like your bank, it’s all a pretty cool system just to get you your coffee.

Best of all they have interchangeable bezels from Silver/Black lines to wood to White/Black lines. The lowest end model starts at $139, an affordable price for a digital picture frame.

They all come with 256MB of integrated memory, CF, and SD/MMC/XD/MS card readers, as well as a USB port for plugging in a flash drive if you choose. They also support a plethora of file formats including JPEG, BMP, Motion JPEG, MPEG 1, MPEG4, and MP3.

First they let Clearwire have a piece of this venture for some money, then they let Google by their way into the deal, next up they are letting TV service providers in. Comcast, Time Warner, and even Bright House Networks will be buying into the nationwide WiMAX network.

Comcast will be reportedly buying in for a cool billion dollars. Time Warner will pony up half a billion with Bright House dumping in a measly 1-2 hundred million dollars.

This deal isn’t set in stone, and I reckon I’m not too terribly set against more than one or two companies being in on this deal as it would presumably aid in getting things done right the first time and done a lot faster as a nationwide rollout of any network can be a bit of a pain. Hopefully they get the backing of Intel soon and start putting this network into place so I can end my contract with Comcast and just get a WiMAX card.

This one off pop machine was designed for Bungie to help them celebrate the milestone that was Halo 2, but it never got used. Well, now they’ve had the whole team sign it and are selling it for charity with all of the proceeds going to the Make a Wish foundation.

Like I said, the team never used it, so it’s more or less brand new, save for the small amount of dust that might have built up on the machine. The current bid is $15,000 if you want this literally one of a kind machine.

Shipping is free if you can pick it up in Kirkland, Washington, otherwise it ranges from $200 to $2000 depending on where you live in the continental US, and if it has to leave that are either to hit Hawaii, Alaska, or Puerto Rico, or worse yet, internationally, I’m sure those shipping costs spike up quite quickly. They did use it a few times to test it and make sure it worked, and it does, but that’s it, so, fire up your bank accounts. I wonder if it comes with a case or two of Mountain Dew’s Halo Game Fuel drink?

This weird little USB LCD device can display multiple different metrics from your computer, it just so happens that almost all of those metrics have to look like clocks in one way or another. So, I suppose you could start with its ability to tell time using your computer’s clock.

It can also display other metrics including processor usage, RAM usage, temperature, all that other jazz that sort of matters. It can’t really do anything else, its not touch sensitive, so unless you are constantly having issues of crashing your computer from opening too much garbage, or you have serious issues seeing the clock on your PC, this may not be the gadget for you.

I am sure you could probably hack it fairly easily to do some more useful tasks such as display your chat buddy lists, show media play information, or something like that, but I’m not that enterprising. It might actually already be able to display one of your SideBar Widgets, but no guarantees. Sadly I have no more info about this device such as where to buy it, how much it costs, or if it even actually exists, but I followed the rabbit hole as far as it went and found nothing.

Tokyo Flash, for a limited time, is adding some watches from some pretty recognizable watch brands. I assure you, if you are at all a design purist when it comes to Citizen or Seiko watches, you might not want to keep going, but if you like good watches regardless of their appearance, well; these are some pretty amazing offerings.

The watches from Citizen and Seiko sort of look like their designers decided to take the day off, but still showed up to work and this was the end result, they look good in a weird way. The Independent watches, which are coincidentally made by Citizen as well, look simply amazing.

I should mention, in case you can’t see these watches, that none of them are LED or “flash” based, they are normal, analog watches (save for the Independent one which is also digital). Now for the good stuff, using the code SP600, you can get 600 Yen off your purchase, and, any purchases over 10,000 Yen get free shipping, if you aren’t too good with conversions, go to decimals in from the right and put a decimal point and that’s real close to the USD amount, so, 10,000 Yen is about $107.

If you depend on Oxygen bars to make it through your day as chipper as ever, then maybe this wouldn’t be a bad investment for you. You get the little oxygen bar gadget and a bunch of other stuff so you can give yourself and/or your friends your daily O2 fix.

For when breathing just isn’t enough, O2-B, the company behind this portable oxygen bar, has your back. There is a 10, 20, and 30 minute timer, a headset, 5 nose hoses, 12 mouthpiece filters, and a free additional intake filter.

I am sure there is an unsafe amount of pure, or nearly pure, O2 to take in on a daily basis, especially if you want to be able to function normally without it, but I don’t know what it is. Furthermore, I don’t know where you can get like the scents/flavors or whatever it is they usually put in O2 at O2 bars, or where you’ll get the O2, but if you plop down the $729 for one of these machines, I’m sure you’ll have all that figured out in no time.

This clock is digital in the way that it uses the 7-segment digit design to tell time, but its analog in the way that those segments are presented. The clock is made from Corian and wood and when it changes the time, it raises and lowers pieces of the digit to make it 3D.

The cool part is the analog portion of the clock where it slowly and simultaneously raises and/or lowers the necessary pieces to make the next digit in the time that’s coming up. So one or more pieces is always moving and making up the new time.

It’s all white, as you can no doubt tell from the pictures, and its powered by custom circuitry and servo motors. It looks amazing, and I want one now, I mean could you imagine flush mounting a large on of these high up on a white wall in your house so your guests think your wall is coming alive to tell the time? So much awesomeness coming from the mind of Alvin Aronson.

So we have two examples of slim, lightweight, completely smooth MacBook causing some problems. In the first example, a gentleman got stopped by airport security for his MacBook Air.

Why, you might ask, well that’s quite simple, its thin, lighter than you’d expect, made with an all-metal shell and doesn’t have near as many ports as you’d expect a laptop to. The ports thing was what really had the security personnel thinking it was a bomb, normally notebooks are covered in ports on all sides, the MBA has one little set of 3 ports, and even those are hidden away, like bombs in the movies. Thankfully, another member of the security team who’s younger than about 40 came over and informed them that it was in fact a computer and they needed to let the man go.

The second example, your going to love this one, consider how much a weekend version of the New Your Times weighs, and how much paper there is in there, now if you didn’t fold it up, and just threw it all over the place on your coffee table, the same place where you MacBook Air were, what do you think the chances are of your wife throwing away such a thin and light notebook right along with the morning Times? Well, apparently pretty as it’s happened now at least once. So, my condolences to Mr. Steven Levy from Newsweek on his loss, and hopefully the TSA won’t harass the other gentleman anymore.

Using a Lithium-ion battery, some CO2 scrubbers and oxygen cells they are able to extend the amount of time you are able to spend under the water. No word on how long you can stay underwater as that’s got to be at least partly depending on the size of battery and size of your air tanks and how you breathe, but sometimes even just a half hour is enough to see the fish you went down looking for in the first place.

One potential downside is if this Li-Ion battery goes bad and explodes, you’ve pretty much got nothing but more fuel for the explosion attached to your back, which is good if you went down on your own as it means there’ll be no mistaking you’re a goner, but bad if you have dive buddies as the shock wave could mess them up pretty bad too. I like the idea of extending the amount of time I can stay underwater though, regardless of the risks.

Put me on Extreme Makeover and tell’em I want gills, forget all this dentistry, face lift, augmentation crap, I want an actually extreme makeover. If that happens, no one’s allowed to call me any name of another famous fish, no Flipper, Shamu, Free Willy, or any of that.

From the looks of it, if you wanted to, and if it was more useful to you, you could set them to whatever time zones you wanted to if NYC, LA, London, Paris, and Tokyo aren’t all on your itinerary. Another great use would be if you had to worry about the opening times for the various financial markets. Regardless of your motivations of buying one you’ll have to choose between the DZ9024 at $550 and the DZ9023 at $495.

So you’ve made it into the boss’ office and you are transferring the files onto your cheap knockoff flash drive and had you been mere seconds faster you wouldn’t be sitting in a jail cell, well you should have bought a flash drive from Corsair. Their new Flash Voyager GT offers up transfer speeds four times faster than that of a regular USB 2.0 drive.

They do it by hand selecting the NAND flash chips to get the fastest ones and by implementing some new advanced flash controller technology. Some examples are office files, pictures, and movies, the transfer times for those 3 different sets of files are 5 seconds, 70 seconds, and 358 seconds, respectively, for a standard USB 2.0 flash drive the Flash Voyager GT has the following times: less than 2 seconds, 24 seconds, and 98 seconds respectively for the same files.

The Flash Voyager is also quite durable, water resistant and shock resistant, and you get the TrueCrypt encryption software that offers up 256-bit AES encryption, and you get a 10 year warranty. The new 16GB Flash Voyager GT will cost you $170, but its well worth it if you need that much storage and don’t like waiting around for file transfers.

This way you can tell how much of your life you wasted playing your Wii.

It takes 4xAA batteries and has a blue backlit LED clock in the center of the sensor bar. It does look somewhat bulky as far as wireless sensor bars go though.

I myself just got a Wii and I’ll be needing one of these soon so I can take my Wii places since I adhered the included sensor bar to the top of my TV. If you want one, it will cost you $18, not a bad price as Wii accessories go.

Well, if you thought the TokyoFlash watches made you look nerdy, then clearly you underestimated geekdom. This new LED watch is made by Nate True and requires you to swing your arm like a madman to see the time.

Actually there is a simple binary time display to it as well, so you don’t have to swing your arms like a madman. There is also some sort of flashlight mode where all the lights get turned on, that’s nifty.

I wonder what the battery life is though? Anyways, you have four options for purchasing, you can buy the chip behind the watch only, a kit with everything to put together yourself, a preassembled board (you provide the enclosure/wristband), or finally, a complete watch, the last one being the most expensive costs $189, the chip only is the cheapest and is $15.

So I’ve had the 32GB Corsair Flash Survivor for a few days now which has been time enough for me to run some benchmarks on it and see how practical it is for every day use. I must say, I love it, I was copying some files to it for a friend, and I came to the realization that for once I didn’t have to worry about copying too much and filling up the flash drive mid copy as there is almost nothing I could copy to this drive that would fill it up.

For some stats on file transfer speeds I did some tests. While it was empty, I ran HD Tach and HD Tune on it, the results of which you’ll see below. Then I did some of my own tests where I transferred files as close to 2GB, 4GB, and 8GB as I could get and timed each of those file transfers.

File 1 – 8.2GB 26 files started 2:14:30 stopped 2:24:58 = 628 seconds

8,810,724,352 bytes size = 14029815.85 bytes per second

8,810,938,368 bytes size on disk

File 2 – 2.05GB 10 files 3 folders started 2:26:30 stopped 2:29:13 = 163 seconds

2,202,269,054 bytes size = 13510853.09 bytes per second

2,202,370,048 bytes size on disk

File 3 – 4.11GB 922 files 65 folders started 2:40:00 stopped 2:53:04 = 784 seconds

4,416,078,880 bytes size = 5632753.67 bytes per second

4,424,056,832 bytes size on disk

Those are the results of that test, as you can see, that puts all of them slightly above 13MB/sec write speed on real world file transfer, and just to let you know, the first 2 files were videos and the 3rd was all music (with some album art thrown in there).

For the HD Tach test, there is a picture below, but the results were pretty good, it had a random access time of 2ms, an average read speed of 21.7MB/second, and a burst speed of 23.9MB/second.

The HD Tune test shows transfer rates of 19.8MB/second max, 16.8MB/second min, and 19.3MB/second average. The access time for this test was 1.7ms and the burst rate was 13.1MB/second.

So, in conclusion, generally the larger a drive gets, the slower these speeds get, but that was clearly not the case with this drive, the average transfer speed of 19.3MB/sec is nothing to write home about, but its not as bad as I expected for such a large drive. So, as a flash drive for every day use, I love it, and its great, if you need something faster, than Corsair has the faster GT model available in 8GB that nearly doubles the transfer speeds, but for the average user, or even for a professional user that doesn’t need really high transfer speeds, this drive is perfect. As for its advertised indestructibility, well, I didn’t have a 200 meter deep pond to drop it into, and I didn’t feel like chancing it under the tire of my truck, but I have been banging it around a lot, trying to do damage, and I threw it in the clothes washer to see if it could take a beating while keeping the water out, and it worked fine, so if those were major concerns of yours, you need not worry. Overall, I give it 4 out of 5 gears.

Rating:
4 out of 5 gears

Who would have ever thought that people in the US would be so dumb and ignorant to think that an LED lit up sign is a bomb.

But they did, in the end; I believe two men were charged with some dumbass charges because they somehow managed to declare the LED signs “hoax devices”. So, next time you have a company and you hire some people to do some advertising for you, might want to be careful, they might be considered terrorists.

Regardless, it will be a long time before I forget. So, just a reminder, this is the one year anniversary of that ever so tragic event.

So when Time Capsule was announced it was understandable that there were a good number of people that were AirPort Extreme owners wondering if they’d be able to do something similar with their AirPort Extreme’s and an external hard drive. Well, it appears as though 10.5.2, the next update in the OS X line, will enable that, and will also carry the necessary updates to make it possible to use the Time Capsule.

There are several other additions carried in the update, but I found that to be one of the more important ones. So now you have the choice of having an AirPort Extreme with an external HDD connected to it, or the Time Capsule which is like an external HDD with an integrated AirPort Extreme.

There isn’t any official word when the new update will hit, but considering it was temporarily listed as a requirement for the Time Capsule; chances are it will land in your Software Update queue by then. That means sometime in February.

There seem to be days when certain items are prolific and today it seems to be clocks. I’ve seen about half a dozen different kinds of clocks/time devices today. As clocks go, the Time Cube Clock is probably the coolest looking one I’ve seen in awhile.

It starts out in a cube shape but as time ticks away, triangular layers will turn in time, giving the clock an ever changing geometric shapes. It’s a 12 hour AM/PM clock face and is powered by 1 AA battery. It’s not very difficult to read, the smaller triangle is the second hand, the middle is the minutes and the larger is the hours.

It’s futuristic design will make a great addition to any room in the house and will most like strike up a little conversation. It costs about $12 which is not a bad price at all.

Also, there is an ant, his favorite symbol of decay and death, which gives you the seconds. There aren’t really any numbers on the watch face, so telling time is a gamble, discerning the number of seconds that have passed is near impossible.

Its not near as flashy as he would have probably liked, but I am sure he’ll get over it. At a mere $34.95 each, this watch isn’t going to be near as rare as his paintings, but its still cool nonetheless.

Check out this watch that also has a WiFi signal strength indicator built into it. I love watches, even more than that, I love watches that can do other cool things, such as this one with a WiFi indicator built in, all you have to do is push the button and it will give you 0-8 bars for signal strength.

It gives you time and date with seconds as well, and it’s all digital using the LCD to display both the time and the WiFi signal strength. Too bad it can’t show which flavor of WiFi is available as well.

Ah well, at least you won’t look like as much of a tool walking around with a separate WiFi finder, you’ll just look a little weird wondering around tapping your watch every few yards. You can get them now at ThinkGeek for $29.99, but I just checked, and they are all sold out.

Some Swedish students made this case mod for a class where they were given a $300 budget. That means the actual PC components must suck, but the case is hella cool.

It looks like most of the actual work went into painting it, other than that it appears to just be some fancy ply-wood work with some better wood for the buttons. It looks nice though, and for $300 if they were ever to mass produce them they’d probably sell pretty well.

Then again they’d have to make some profit, and international shipping is pricey for something that large, so by the time it got here it’d probably be considerably pricier. Regardless, its unavailable for purchase, but I am sure with just a little bit of effort, and an NES controller to use as a model, you could probably make your own or stuff some other stuff inside the case, my personally favorite would be to see a pair of turntables and some mixers stuffed inside a case like this like a DJ coffin.

I don’t know what it is about the way OLEDs look, but I have always liked it, its kind of a retro look I guess, anyways, this watch works solely with and OLED display. When its not telling time, it displays a field of stars, a starry night sky if you will.

But if you shake it or tap it on the screen, it comes alive and shapes into a proper time discerning device. Its just an analog clock, it’d be cooler if it was digital, or if you had a choice, but its still a cool looking watch.

Right now its just a design by Lv Zhogfang, its their TIWE watch. Hopefully this concept makes it into production though.
