NVIDIA Tegra 3 VSMP technology renamed 4-PLUS-1

Back when we were first learning about the amazing technology in the system-on-chip architecture of the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor, the term "VSMP" was used to describe the "ninja core" it included. That extra core, the fifth core, also known as the "companion core" is now set to be described in a much more "everyman" term: 4-PLUS-1. What the NVIDIA 4-PLUS-1 quad-core architecture here does is the same thing we described all those weeks ago, it's simply much more clear with a brand new name attached to it.

This week LG Electronics have released information on their first NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor toting smartphone, the LG Optimus 4X HD. This device follows up on the world's first dual-core device, the LG Optimus 2X, and comes with everything from HD video playback to a high efficiency battery. This smartphone has a massive 4.7-inch display, 8.9mm thickness across the whole device, and a super-thin bezel around the screen - and of course, the NVIDIA Tegra 3 1.5GHz quad-core processor.

ZTE Mimosa X revealed with NVIDIA Tegra 2 and Icera modem

This week the folks at ZTE and NVIDIA have announced their first collaboration: a smartphone by the name of Mimosa X, complete with Tegra 2 and an Icera modem. For those of you that don't remember, NVIDIA acquired Icera in mid-2011 and this combination is a first for several reasons. This device has a 4.3-inch display at qHD 960 x 540 pixel resolution screen, Dolby sound, and a launch date inside the second quarter of 2012. And it's going to launch with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

NVIDIA Q4 Fiscal and Annual 2012 results show growth, great outlook

Today the team at NVIDIA have revealed their earnings for the entirety of their 2012 Annual and Fourth Quarter Fiscal season, showing quarterly revenue down, but every single other number rising up. This earnings call also played host to several announcements and assurances from the big green chipmaker, including the official announcement of Tegra 3 quad-core phones. The call showed revenue gains of 12.8 percent for NVIDIA over fiscal 2011 to a whopping $4 billion, and gross margin blowing up to 51.4 percent for GAAP and 51.9 percent for non-GAAP.

NVIDIA confirms quad-core smartphones in Q1

The Mobile World Congress event we'll be attending at the end of this month will indeed play host to more than one quad-core packing NVIDIA Tegra 3 smartphone, so says CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. Word of these devices was suspected for some time now, most recently seen via NVIDIA with their invite to the MWC 2012 events, but today is the final confirmation of what we'll see: not just one Tegra 3 base superphone, but several. It was during NIVIDA's annual and fourth quarter Fiscal 2012 earnings call that this news was released, and it wasn't the only good news the group had to share.

NVIDIA MWC 2012 invite teases world’s first quad-core phone

As the 2012 edition of Mobile World Congress quickly approaches, NVIDIA sends its invite to a series of events, the ultimate subject being their quad-core Tegra 3 processor sitting on a smartphone! This reveal will end up being the first time we've seen a quad-core System on Chip working on a device smaller than a tablet, and in true classic fashion, will mark one year exactly since we first laid eyes on the original announcement of Tegra 3, then code-named Project Kal-El. Superman has since landed on the Asus Transformer Prime and will soon find its way onto several other tablets, also perhaps being released at this same set of events.
