How is the Nexus 7 so cheap?

Google’s Nexus 7 didn’t come as a great surprise when it launched at IO 2012 yesterday, but the $199 price tag still raised some eyebrows in astonishment. At under half the price of a new iPad, it’s competitive – though very different – to Apple’s slate, but it also undercuts a fair number of other Android tablets too. You can’t even accuse Google of milking international buyers to make up the difference, as prices outside of the US are, surprisingly, very reasonable too. The Nexus 7 will sell from £159 in the UK, for instance, versus expectations of around £250. So, how has Google (and hardware partner ASUS) managed to make the Nexus 7 so cheap?

We’ve seen the rumors and leaks for months, but now an ASUS executive has all but confirmed that Google will be unveiling a 7-inch Nexus tablet later today. The exec, who wished to remain anonymous, spoke to Reuters regarding Google’s plans, saying the company wished to have its own affordable tablet in place to compete with others in the marketplace. This week we’ve gotten the opportunity to take an up close and personal peek at the Acer Iconia Tab A700, an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet with a high definition display and the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor under the hood. This Acer device looks and feels rather similar to its predecessor, the Iconia Tab A500, but its components set it in a class all its own. Rumors have indicated that Google is set to launch an affordable 7-inch tablet at Google I/O, and with the event just days away, some last minute leaks are starting to hit the internet.
