Acer on the attack with $699 Ultrabooks in 2012

Acer plans to go on the attack in 2012 with a strong push in four major product categories, whereas its strategy last year was mainly to defend its position in the market. Panasonic is developing new applications that use WiGig technology, which can wirelessly transfer data at multi-gigabit speeds. Although first announced back in 2009, adoption of WiGig has taken some time. Motorola Wi-Fi-only Droid Xyboard is now available

The cheaper, Wi-Fi-only version of Motorola's latest and greatest Xyboard tablet has begun shipping. Pre-orders for the units are now being fulfilled, and the product pages on Verizon's website now show them as being available to purchase. The new products, which were originally scheduled for a January 18 launch, are geared at consumers who want a high-end tablet but don't care about being able to take it online any time they want. Netflix on over 800 devices, usage on Smart TVs up

During Netflix's Q4 earnings call yesterday, CEO Reed Hastings emphasized the importance of mobile devices for the company, namely tablets, Apple TV and other connected Smart TVs. Although he didn't get into numbers, a recent Netflix job posting revealed that the service has been shipping on more than 800 different devices, a bit boost from the 450 or so devices six months ago. Apple sold more iPads than HP sold PCs in Q1 2012

Apple reported record fiscal Q1 2012 earnings today with sales of its iPads and Macs well exceeding rivals' sales of PCs. California requiring energy-efficient handset chargers in 2013

The eco-friendly state of California has just passed a unanimous vote requiring device manufacturers to ship energy-efficient handset chargers starting 2013. This new requirement applies to all cellphones, tablets, and hundreds of other electronic devices.
