Billboard to show streaming music stats on their charts

The way we consume music has changed dramatically. What used to be album sales have quickly, and sometimes dramatically, turned into streaming audio. Services like iTunes bridged a gap between physical and digital sales, but we’re well past that, now. Streaming is in, and monthly subscriptions have supplanted our out-of-pocket spend for albums. To reflect actual song plays, Billboard will now start to appreciate streaming statistics in their reports. It’s the first big change since Billboard started using SoundScan metrics.

In pulling her entire catalog from Spotify, Taylor Swift took a jab at streaming music. According to Swift, streaming services like Spotify don’t pay artists enough. That’s something we’ve touched on before, and she’s right — they typically don’t. Artists get paid by volume of played tracks, so for the house DJ in Prague looking to be discovered, streaming isn’t so lucrative. Taylor Swift, however, is Taylor Swift. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek took exception to Swift’s commentary, and has issued a response.

SoundCloud partners with Warner in licensing deal

SoundCloud has struck their first licensing deal, bringing Warner Music Group into the streaming business. In the deal, Warner will get a cut each time one of their songs is played via SoundCloud’s ad-supported service, as well as via a new SoundCloud subscription service launching next year. The service, which has 175 million monthly users, currently offers no royalties to any record label for offering their music via the service. Warner is the first label to earn money via SoundCloud.

When it comes to streaming, Stitcher is a name you hear pop up quite a bit. The streaming audio service is a popular place for podcasters to peddle their channels and shows. Stitcher is now part of Deezer, the streaming service that concentrates on music playback. The deal makes Deezer one of the better overall streaming service around, encompassing both music and podcasting. The move immediately gives Deezer ownership of the top rated Android podcasting app, and the second place podcasting app on iTunes.
