The original BlackBerry Storm failed to sweep through the smartphone sector in the way RIM had hoped it would, criticized for its frustrating SurePress touchscreen technology, glitchy firmware and – most damningly – not being all that hot at messaging. With the BlackBerry Storm2 9550, RIM claim to have not only addressed all of those elements but more, and so it’s with the mildest of trepidation that we’ve been playing with the new smartphone. Despite the fact that Verizon's CEO has admitted to flaunting a BlackBerry Storm2 and Walt Mossberg has reviewed the CDMA handset, RIM have made no official statement about the second-gen touchscreen smartphone heading to the US carrier.  It seems the website team responsible for Verizon's pages haven't been so cautious, however; a 3D handset viewer is just one of the pre-announcement Storm2 tidbits available to play with already.

Nothing like a leaked carrier roadmap to whet the upgrade appetite, and going by the Boy Genius Reports’ slice of Verizon’s not-too-distant future there’ll be plenty of CDMA handsets on offer to those bored with their current phone.  As well as a fair sized dollop of BlackBerry detail, there’s also a splash of Android and some feature-phones to be had too.

According to the Boy Genius Report, RIM’s BlackBerry Storm 2 – the touchscreen follow-up to the original Storm launched back in November - will indeed include WiFi b/g along with EVDO Rev.A and 2100MHz UMTS (for roaming).  Known as the BlackBerry 9550, it will also be joined by the 9520, a version of the Storm 2 for GSM carriers AT&T and Rogers Wireless.

According to a source very close to the issue, Verizon has given the go for RIM to release the BlackBerry Storm 2 in September of this year. The followup to the groundbreaking Storm that was released last year as the first touchscreen Blackberry, SlashGear has been told that the new Storm 2 addresses one of the biggest criticisms of the first smartphone and of Verizon devices in general, in that it will support WiFi.
