Gabe Newell of Valve: Windows 8 “a catastrophe”

This week at the video game conference known as Casual Connect, Valve head Gabe Newell has taken out the knives and cut up a nice clean slice of Microsoft with heavily negative comments on their next big operating system Windows 8. Newell's Valve and Steam create a video game environment in which people can download games and keep their accounts with access to those games in the cloud. Newell is currently working to bring big-name games that otherwise would only have been for Windows and OS X machines to Linux in the meantime. Read The Full Story

Steam hardware survey sees rise in lower-end PCs

You would think that, as time goes on, more and more Steam users would be adopting better hardware for their PCs. The Steam hardware survey for June 2012 tells us that may not necessarily be the case, as the company actually saw an increase in lower-end PC use over past hardware surveys. Take, for instance, the number of computers that use Intel Integrated Graphics - while NVIDIA and ATI GPUs are still by far the most common, in June Steam saw the use of Intel Integrated Graphics rise to 11%. Valve has been a significant player in the digital distribution of games via its Steam service on the PC for long time. Valve takes a shot at Education

This week it appears that Valve and their wildly successful Steam platform for computer games are taking a giant leap into the realm of education. With their upcoming program Teach With Portals, they'll be bringing a new edition of Portal 2 to the classroom for teachers to utilize its Puzzle Maker engine for teaching physics with computer-based creation tools. Telltale’s Walking Dead game sells one million copies

The Walking Dead Episode 1: A New Day has been downloaded a million times between the Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and Steam. Valve on Tim Cook meeting: ‘I wish!’

Earlier this month a meeting between Apple’s Tim Cook and the gaming company known as Valve was reported by several sources – now it turns out that it never happened. From what Gabe and crew say now, they were as surprised by the news that Cook had visited their facilities as everyone else was, frantically emailing one another trying to find out who, if anyone, had actually seen Cook enter or exit their offices – is he now just being a bit of a fibber to cover up the truth?

The company posted job ads for what appears to be a hardware initiative or at least something that sounds like a complete departure from its long-standing traditional business model. Valve job listing points to potential hardware offering

Last month, a rumor arose indicating that Valve was working on a “Steam Box” designed to rival console experiences. The company was said to be looking to use powerful PC hardware, like an Intel Core i7 and NVIDIA graphics card, and pairing it with a customized software experience. The box wouldn’t be locked down though, with Valve hoping to establish a hardware set of minimum hardware guidelines for developers.
