Electronic Arts tried to purchase Valve in the past

, Sep 10th 2012 Discuss [0]

When you say "Electronic Arts" and "Valve" in the same sentence, most gamers will likely point to the digital distribution tussle currently going on between the two. Electronic Arts wants its platform, Origin, to become one of Steam's biggest competitors, and Origin has garnered a lot of negative comments in the past couple of years because of that. Valve and Electronic Arts have always had a seemingly close relationship though, and it might surprise some to hear that at one point, Electronic Arts was considering purchasing Valve, as The New York Times is reporting today. Welcome back to Monday, folks. We're in the final stretch before Apple's big event kicks off, and with just a couple of days left before everything goes down, the iPhone 5 is making a splash in a big way. The (hopefully) incoming handset was given the title of "biggest upgrade in consumer electronics history" by one enthusiastic analyst today. T-Mobile is offering an "Unlocked and Unlimited" deal for the iPhone even though it doesn't carry the device itself, and we got word today that Apple suppliers have started shipping new 13.3-inch MacBook Pros with Retina Display and a new line of all-in-one iMacs. Valve imposes $100 submission fee to stop Steam Greenlight spammers

, Sep 5th 2012 Discuss [0]

Steam's new Greenlight feature launched last week, quickly attracting all sorts of games for the community to vote on for potential inclusion in Steam's catalog. There's just one problem with that: since there weren't any kind of submission requirements in place when Greenlight launched, the door was opened for all sorts of spammers to put fake and offensive games up on the Greenlight page. These submissions ranged from sex games and 9/11 games to fake listings for titles like Half-Life 3 and Minecraft, and after a while, wading through all of that spam to find legitimate games became a chore. Welcome to Thursday evening folks. We had a lot of news coming out of Germany for the second day of our IFA 2012 trip, so let's jump in. We have a ton of hands-on posts to get through, but first, be sure to have a look at our Dell IFA 2012 Wrap-Up for all of the details on what the company announced and what it let us see. Moving on, today was a big opportunity to get some hands-on time with a bunch of different devices announced at IFA today and yesterday, and of course we took full advantage of it. Steam Greenlight launches with hundreds of games to vote for

, Aug 30th 2012 Discuss [0]

After hearing about it for the past few weeks, Steam Greenlight has finally launched. As many of you already know, Steam Greenlight is a new system that allows developers to submit their game to the community for approval. Should the Steam community welcome the game with open arms (or, in this case, up-votes), then it stands a good chance at being added to the Steam catalog. Read The Full Story

Friday has come and gone, which means that the weekend is here once again. The latest iPhone 5 rumors have propelled Apple's stock to its highest point ever, and it turns out the company's funds will go toward helping tap a recently-discovered underground river in Crook County, Oregon. Earlier today we saw a picture of what was reported to be the Samsung Galaxy Note II, but later on in the day Daniel YU informed everyone that it was just his mock-up used without his permission. That's disappointing, but his mock-up looks great, so be sure to check that out. Read The Full Story

Steam Big Picture Mode beta kicks off in September

, Aug 17th 2012 Discuss [0]

Valve has given us a better idea of when it plans to launch the beta for Steam's Big Picture Mode. Steam Big Picture Mode, as many of you already know, allows players to hook up their computers to their televisions and play the games in their Steam library on the big screen. In the latest episode of GameTrailers TV (which features a rather hairy-looking Gabe Newell) Valve's Greg Coomer announced that the beta will be coming early next month. Read The Full Story

Another Monday is in the bag folks, so give yourselves a pat on the back. We're starting things off tonight by having a look at the latest iPhone rumors. Current whispers are telling us that pre-orders for the next iPhone will become available on September 12 - the same day that Apple is expected to reveal it - and that it'll become available at AT&T later on in the month. We also caught a glimpse of the reported logic board in the next iPhone, and it seems that this new logic board is leaving room for a larger battery and LTE capabilities. Read The Full Story

Steam Community getting ‘major’ update, Game Hubs detailed

, Aug 13th 2012 Discuss [0]

Valve has announced that the Steam Community will soon be going through a major change, but like everything Valve does, it's revealing this "major" update at its own pace. That is to say that Valve will be announcing a new feature every day this week, and today we were introduced to Game Hubs. A Game Hub serves as something as a catch-all for the content related to a game, and every title available on Steam will be getting one. Read The Full Story

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 8, 2012

We've officially reached the middle of the week, folks - only two more days to go and then the weekend is here once again. Today we didn't have too many stories about the ongoing trial between Apple and Samsung, but what we did get was huge. A rather damning 132-page report surfaced in court today, which shows Samsung attempting to differentiate the original Galaxy S from the iPhone specifically, and we looked at the difference between competitive analysis and flat out copying as a result of the report. On the lighter side of things, Conan O' Brien had a bit of fun with the trial on last night's show, so be sure to give that a look. Read The Full Story

Steam expanding to offer non-game software later this year

, Aug 8th 2012 Discuss [0]

Well, this is quite interesting: soon you'll be able to use Steam for more than just playing games. Valve announced today that it will begin offering non-game software titles through Steam starting in September, so before long you'll be able to access your other software from within Steam as well. Valve's announcement was pretty vague, meaning we don't know what kind of software will be available at launch, but the prospect is exciting nonetheless. Read The Full Story

Tony Hawk veterans bring Epic Skater to Kickstarter

, Aug 7th 2012 Discuss [0]

Another day, another video game Kickstarter campaign goes live - though this is one you might want to pay attention to. Its name is Epic Skater, and it's made by some of the developers who worked on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Guitar Hero. If you're a fan of skateboarding games and that doesn't get your ears to perk up, then we're not really sure what will. Read The Full Story
