Boxee raises $16.5m funding: More content & tablet support promised

Boxee has closed a new round of funding, raising a further $16.5m in investment which the company says it will spend on adding content to the streaming media platform, increasing the number of hardware partners producing standalone Boxee Boxes, and developing the system to take on more of the established A/V ecosystem. According to Boxee VP of marketing Andrew Kippen, the company "would also like to see Boxee handle all the video on a TV with no need to switch inputs."

Microsoft IPTV plans could put Mediaroom on Silverlight STBs

Microsoft's plans for IPTV and set-top boxes continue to trickle out, with the latest batch of rumors suggesting it's Mediaroom which will be at the heart of the system. Mediaroom is Microsoft's IPTV platform, licensed out to various carriers and TV/video service providers, and part of the company's Interactive Entertainment Business division; according to ZDNet's sources, not only is Microsoft working on a Windows Phone Mediaroom client, the company is also believed to be developing a Silverlight build for Mediaroom (codenamed "Taos"), a tie-in between Mediaroom and Windows Media Center (codenamed "Monaco") and maybe even a "Santa Fe" Mediaroom/Silverlight STB.

PrimeSense score new funding; Motion-sensing STBs, TVs & HTPCs incoming

PrimeSense, the motion-tracking company behind Microsoft's Kinect and ASUS' WAVI Xtion is obviously doing something right, as the company has just secured a new round of funding. The exact nature of the deal hasn't been disclosed, but when we talked to PrimeSense the company confirmed it was "extremely focused" on the "living room experience - browsing your media centre on your television."

Amino Freedom Jump MeeGo STB promises to play nicely with operators

Streaming STBs like Logitech's Revue and the Boxee Box are hugely flexible, but as Google and other have discovered, content owners are turning out to be pretty cautious with who and what can access their multimedia. Amino reckon that's a gap in the market; its Freedom Jump uses the same Intel Atom CE4100 as the Revue and Boxee Box, topped with MeeGo, but is designed to work alongside existing operator pay-TV STBs rather than bypassing them.
