Shown off back in July last year, the bundle – and the game – has been a long time coming. Originally, Microsoft promised to have the console and title on sale by the 2011 holidays, but plans changed in August when the firm began telling eager gamers that it would instead drop in 2012 giving the developers time to fettle it to its “full potential.”

That game tweaking looks to be at an end, and the promo bundle is finally ready for primetime. That includes a Star Wars-themed pop playlist, and if you have the limited edition console you can also unlock an exclusive C-3PO Dance Mode.

This is so awesome. I had a bunch of slot car sets when I was a kid; I was never very good at racing them though. Mostly I concentrated on making the cars leave the track and hit the people racing against me in the gonads. That trick takes more skill than you might imagine. I would have so owned one of these as a kid. Honestly, I might order both of them now.

What we have here is a pair of Star Wars themed slot car sets. They don’t use small racecars at all. One of the sets is called Death Star Attack and has Vader’s Tie Fighter and Luke’s X-Wing as the vehicles. This set ever glows in the dark and races though what appears to be part of the box. The other set is the one I like best.

It is the Battle of Endor and has a couple white skeleton looking troopers racing around on the speeders. I guess the company didn’t want to license the real likeness for the vehicles. Exactly when these sets will launch is unknown. The Death Star set will cost around $109 and the Endor set will be around $156.

It’s been nearly 3 years in development and thousands of hours of blood, sweat, and fun had in the process, and it’s finally here: the complete re-make of Star Wars: A New Hope constructed entirely of fan-made 15 second clips. This project was originally called Star Wars Uncut, and this final product is of course called Star Wars Uncut: Director’s Cut, and stitches together the entire set of hundreds of clips into one perfected bunch. This version is the “final” version of the film, and is available for you to watch 100% for free and in its entirety.

This crowd-sourced bit of genius is available to watch both on Vimeo and on YouTube, both versions being dropped into this post here for your enjoyment and just incase one or the other is knocked out by the authorities that be. That said, it does appear that they’ve run into little to no trouble in creating and publishing this fan film, more than likely because there’s so much love in every bit of the process that no Empire could possibly resist. See if you can count how many times Legos are used in place of actors and droids:

This project, again, started in 2009 and was initiated to work with just the first Star Wars film: A New Hope. Contributors were asked to bring forth a 15 second clip assigned to them by the loosely tied leadership for the project, using whatever means necessary to bring the clip to life in a creative way. In 2010 this project won a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Creative Achievement In Interactive Media, and it’s well deserved! The version you’re watching now has been put together by Aaron Valdez and Bryan Pugh, they doing video editing and sound editing to make this product one that’s not only watchable, but entirely enjoyable to behold!

Now it’s time to start in on The Empire Strikes Back! Hooray!

If you are a big fan of the awesome BioWare MMORPG SWTOR, you will be glad to hear that updates to fix a couple of issues that many gamers are having are inbound. The specific issues that are being addressed in the updates include the issue with Ability Delay and an issue with a glitch that let people gain more Valor than they should have by exploiting the glitch.

The Ability Delay issue has apparently been around since the game launched. The issue is when abilities that are listed on cool down are actually still usable. Another issue is with instant abilities failing to trigger in combat. There are two fixes out of three that will be coming in the next update to address those problems.

The Valor glitch issue called Ilum PvP that happened after a patch not long ago is going to be addressed as well. The developers aren’t just going to roll back Valor gained during the glitch period since some gamers might have gained the Valor and abilities legitimately. However, the logs that the game keeps can tell the developers where and how the players gain the Valor and those that used the glitch will be hit with the “appropriate measures” they say. Appropriate measures would presumably be a roll back of Valor.

At nearly six years in production, hundreds of programmers, artists, contract workers, and writers, $200 million USD spent on the newest and grandest game by Electronic Arts’ BioWare, Star Wars: The Old Republic is coming up now as the most expensive game to produce of all time. The Electronics Art studio BioWare hopes that the Old Republic will be able to grab all of that cash back on not only the $60 purchase price for the game as well as the $15 a month users will be paying to stay connected to the MMORPG’s online servers. Be you a Jedi or a Sith, or something in between, know this: you’re now part of the most costly game ever produced.

The $200 million price point comes from Wall Street analysts quoted by the LA Times who have also said it might be between $200 and $150 million, these numbers one that supposedly “people knowledgeable with the game’s budget don’t dispute.” Game development costs are not as openly discussed as the budgets for films, as the gaming industry has grown up very differently from the film industry which routinely relies on insurance to gain back losses for costs on movies that don’t do well in theaters. And then there’s the costs that continue to mount up as the game works live on the daily.

According to the numbers and, again, the LA Times, there’s approximately 500,000 paying subscribers, each of them paying $15 a month, this making it realistic that the game itself costs $7.5 million a month to maintain. Royalty fees are also not included in that, the numbers for the amount EA owes Lucasfilm likely also adding up rather quickly. Regardless, Frank Gibeau, president of EA Labels, which oversees the Star Wars game, notes the following:

“We’re not betting the company on Star Wars. While it’s a major undertaking, it’s one aspect of a larger strategy to transform EA from a company that sells discs to one that derives the bulk of its revenue from digital games and services.” – Gibeau

We’ll see how it all works out soon, as subscribers continue to mount. Currently the biggest MMORPG game on earth is World of Warcraft from Blizzard which currently holds 10 million subscribers – that compared to 500,000 is no joke, but you never know! Soon Star Wars could have a comparable number, and even 4 million would raise EA’s operating profit to a 5o% margin at $395 million a year. Get that money!

There’s one whole heck of a lot of devices here at CES 2012 that cost a major amount of cash, but if there’s one company that can bring the smallest and least expensive item to the show and still make a splash. This Mimobot’s brand new Mimomicro USB microSD card reader, complete with officially licensed Star Wars characters making up the bulk of their design. Unlike the first waves of Mimobot USB devices, these don’t do anything on their own, they read microSD cards for your USB-enabled device on the fly.

So you take this little guy, you flip out the back and plug your microSD card in, taking the whole device then and plugging it in to your USB 2.0 port so you can see the contents of your card on your computer. MicroSD cards are the ones you pop into your smartphone, this device giving you a fun way to get media on or off your smartphone, essentially. And it’s Star Wars, so you can’t go wrong.

These little monsters will be out in March, 2012, and will cost you $12.95 each. There’s also DC comic book characters such as Superman, Batman, and the like, and they’ll cost the same as well. And you can pop em on your keychain just like the rest of the Mimobot line. Fun!

The gaming world sat up and took notice when Razer released its Blade gaming laptop with a built-in video touchpad and assignable buttons. Now they’re showing off a more conservative desktop keyboard with the same features, and themed it for the ultra-popular Star Wars: The Old Republic massively multiplayer online game. We checked out Razer’s CES booth for a quick demonstration.

The video touchscreen hangs out on the right side of the keyboard, where the number pad would normally be. The low-resolution screen is a laptop-style touchpad when not in active use, with a series of ten buttons on top with tiny OLEDs embedded in them. The buttons change depending upon which app you’re using on the keyboard at the time – for example, in the browser or YouTube app, you get the basic back/forward/reload navigation buttons. The profiles can be changed for each game or application.

The standard Razer bells and whistles apply to the rest of the keyboard, including backlit keys with comfy switches. Your settings aren’t saved to internal memory as in previous models, but are synced to Razer’s cloud service for your LAN party. The Razer Star Wars: The Old Republic gaming keyboard will retail for $250, and a representative said it would be available later this month.

If that title didn’t get you pumped up about what this release possibly could be: have a look at the title image here, complete with gigantic claymation heads on Yoda and Darth Maul, a team of force-wielders whose new favorite drink is Brisk Iced Tea. This duo of cartooned-out characters is promoting two things: the release of the first Star Wars movie (The Phantom Menace) in 3D format, and Brisk. They’ve got not only this utterly strange duo of video ad spots, but an iPhone app called Brisksaber for your free downloading and use, right this second!

You’ll be knocking the heck out of your Brisk-laden enemies as you seek to guzzle your own in the Star Wars universe with, of course, your very own lightsaber. It’s not the app though that’s the most important and noteworthy bit of this equation, believe it or not, it’s the first commercial. In this ad spot you’ll find Darth Maul, the tattooed horn-headed dark Jedi who barely has a word spoken in the first Star Wars episode doing nothing more than bumbling around repeatedly, popping various oddities out of the sides of his weapon until he eventually drinks a Brisk – through his back.

Also tune in to 0:16 for an Afro-ninja treat. Then of course there’s Brisksaber, a video game you play with your finger, lightsabering your way to victory. You can see the advertisement for that here, plus the app on the iTunes App Store OR the Android Market right this moment as well – the idea then is that you purchase Brisk to get additional levels when you beat the basic version of the game. Brisk, Jedi!

There’s nothing quite like a flashmob these days, ladies and gentlemen, and when it comes to massive displays of unequivicle awesomeness, there’s no better way to display it than with a bunch of lightsabers: thus the combination has been made to celebrate the start of the multiplayer online game Star Wars: The Old Republic. This particular flash mob took place at night in Times Square in New York, and you simply must watch the majority of the video to get the full effect. How people standing still while epic music plays can have such an effect, I’ll never know.

You’re about to see one whole heck of a lot of movie-quality Old Republic warriors standing around in the center of one of the busiest walkable intersections on earth, and that’s not the best part. After the heros and villains come out, there’s also a hoard of fans of the genre participating in the fun as well. So many blue and red lightsabers you won’t know what to do with yourself!

You can join the fun online now after weeks and months and even years of waiting. Unlike those frozen here in the walk, you’ve got no freezing to be doing – sign up and sign on right this minute for infinite fun over your holiday weekend and beyond. And don’t forget to pick a Green lightsaber: they’re clearly superior.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is launching today and is one of the coolest MMORPG games I have seen in a long time. Any Star Wars fan will want to check this game out. The game launches officially today and last night many gamers around the world lined up to be among the first to get their hands on the game. Anything Star Wars related often means that geeks will be dressed up and apparently, that happened last night in major cities like NYC, Paris, London, and Austin.

The new game is a story driven MMO that allows the fans of the franchise to start their own saga in the Star Wars universe. The game is from EA, BioWare and LucasArts. It has high quality voice acting, full story lines, and lots of personal choices for the player to make that will have consequences. The MMO is set a thousand years before the Star Wars movies.

Players can choose to join with the Galactic Republic or the Sith Empire. There are eight Star Wars characters to choose from with a Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Smuggler, Trooper, Sith Warrior, Sith Inquisitor, Bounty Hunter, and Imperial Agent. The game comes with 30 days of game play. After that first month players need to sign up for monthly service at $14.99 per month, $41.97 for three months, or $77.94 for 6-months.

Automotive is a rather quick growing category on not only our tech blog but the whole internet world’s tech radar – and with products like this Stormtrooper Motorcycle Suit made of leather by UD Replicas for the real-life wearing and crashing in of bike riders everywhere, it’s not tough to see why! What you’re looking at here is two options for the Star Wars and moto-bike lover in your life, one classic white-shelled “Imperial white” stormtrooper and one black Shadow Trooper full set of grade-A cowhide leather. You won’t find a fold out of place nor a detail undone here, folks, and you’ll certainly be safer on your bike than a “real” stormtrooper is in the blaster pistol smoke.

UD Replicas have what they say is “setting a new standard in leather garment manufacturing” with their classic Star Wars imperial armor sets. And these aren’t just costumes, folks, each set is totally strong as you need it to be – built-in CE-approved body armor keeping you protected from the elements including that ever-present pavement that you may be prone to slapping into should your speeder malfunction. Rebels are prone to make that happen when you’re chilling on the dark side, if you know what I mean.

You’ve got adjustable biceps, thighs, shins, and forearm leather for a customized fit, and snap buttons on the cuffs and wrist zipper to keep you in a familiar space. You’ve got a removable quilted cotton lining, and a waist belt that’s non-removable near the “cleverly” hidden main front zipper with three main access points for ease of use. The jacket and the pants zip together to make essentially a one-piece body suit, and the CE-approved bits include body armor in the shoulders, forearms/elbow, thighs and knee/shin armor, and a back spine protector. Each of these pieces are removable for day-to-day off-cycle wear.

Another gigantic game is on the horizon and set for the last month of this year, that being Star Wars: The Old Republic, and news today surrounds those who have already pre-ordered the game for early arrival, those people so dedicated to Star Wars, that is, that they’d have a heart attack over the idea that they’d be amongst the first to start exploring the universe for their very own in this new MMORPG. Creators of the massively multiplayer online role playing game SW:TOR have let known already that pre-ordering players will get to start the game earlier than the rest of the population starting December 20th, 2011, what they haven’t let known until now is how long that early access will last.

This week we’re to understand that the amount of time you pre-orderers get to play the The Old Republic before the general public is completely dependent on when you’ve redeemed your pre-order code. The early opening of the game will be staggered across five full days amongst those who’ve pre-ordered the game, and you’ll have a maximum of five days in that period to play before the game officially gets released to the greater bulk of gamers everywhere. And what’s best about this whole situation? You can still pre-order right now!

Have yourself a good ol’ time pre-ordering the game right this second at the SW:TOR Store in one of several editions, Standard Edition, Digital Deluxe Edition, or Collector’s Edition. The most expensive edition gives you such perks as a special Collector’s Edition in-game store, an exclusive mouse droid (seen below) that’ll run around with you on your missions and adventures, and of course a Gentle Giant Darth Magnus statue you can put right there on your desk and stare at! See an official unboxing video of that ultimate super amazing edition at the bottom of this post as well.

Then to redeem your code and get entered for early play, head over to the pre-order portal and click that button! Hope for five days, pray for it!

For those of you not following along with every tiny movement of George Lucas and his never-ending stream of ideas on how to re-present his film collection, it may come as a surprise to you that Star Wars will be re-released in 3D format in theaters starting in 2012 – today’s trailer being final proof. It started as a rumor after George himself hinted at a release of the films in a 3D format after having first seen AVATAR in 3D, saying that the technology had finally caught up with his vision for a 3D presentation of the saga. Now we’ve got the first 3D trailer for a big-screen release.

What you’ll see come February 10, 2012 will be the first installment in the full 6-film series, The Phantom Menace. I’m not going to get too far into how these films SHOULD be presented, because we could talk about that all day, all night, and all week long, but know this: everyone who knows anything knows that you’re supposed to watch 4, 5, and 6 before you watch 1, 2, and 3, simply because the secrets are revealed in correct order that way, of course! Have a peek at the Phantom Menace trailer here:

This of course can be taken for real, official, and not a joke because it’s not April first and the video is posted on the official Star Wars YouTube channel. Now since we’re talking about Star Wars and that means it’s time to geek out, have a look below at the trailer for Star Wars : Special Edition, aka the re-release of the films on the 20th anniversary of the original film. Notice how similar the start of the trailer is to the one above. Enjoy!

While the rest of the world was running around crashing its head into a wall in excitement over the just-revealed Galaxy Nexus and finalized Ice Cream Sandwich from Google, we had a sit-down with several Android authorities, one of whom, Matias Duarte to be exact, had a rather interesting take on the difference between voice controls in Android and Apple’s Siri. As you well know, one of the biggest features on the newest set of Apple mobile hardware and software is Siri, a voice-controlled assistant, where Android still totes several voice-activated features across the board. What we heard from Duarte in Hong Kong was that he’s thought long and hard about this situation and has come up with the nerdiest explanation of all.

In response to a question that went more or less like the following: “Can you compare to Siri? Google has voice control, voice command, voice search, voice everything – compared to Siri – what do you think about the competition?” Duarte responded with, first of all, a bit of applause for how Apple is going about utilizing voice controls. After this, he goes directly for the science fiction:

“Well, we don’t like to set ourselves in a head-to-head kind of way, you know, Apple makes terrific products, I think Siri is great; I think it’s really hard in the long run to follow strategy of making kind of an artificial personality. You know, it can be really funny at first, but that uncanny value of just, uh, having a personality that you start to interact with, um, as you would a person, with all the contextual ambiguity you would with a real person – that’s a really challenging approach, and they’re going for it, that’s great.

Our approach is different. The metaphor I like to take is – if it’s Star Wars, you have these robot personalities like C-3PO who runs around and he tries to do stuff for you, messes up and makes jokes, he’s kind of a comic relief guy. Our approach is more like Star Trek, right, starship Enterprise; every piece of computing surface, everything is voice-aware. It’s not that there’s a personality, it doesn’t have a name, it’s just “Computer.”” – Duarte

So it’s now C-3PO and Computer. Do you think we can get a Majel Barrett voice-over for Android? I sure as heck hope so. Meanwhile have a look at the Galaxy Nexus and Siri just for fun:

Galaxy Nexus hands-on

And note that this is only one tiny fraction of the full Q and A session we were part of back on that faithful day earlier this month, the rest coming here to the main news feed soon!

UPDATE: Here’s the Complete Ice Cream Sandwich Launch Q and A with Android Authorities now!

It’s time for the newest and hopefully last date change for the release of the Star Wars MMORPG – The Old Republic. This is a game that, for the lay person, will be comparable to World of Warcraft in its scope, allowing players to create their own character with whom they’ll be able to experience the entire Star Wars universe as it unfolds before them. Have battles, accomplish missions, swing some lightsabers around, the whole shebang. The newest word on this upcoming game is that there will be a global launch – with North America and the European territories on the list thus far and no sign of greater Asia – on December 20th, 2011.

As those of you who’ve been waiting for this game for many years know already, this game was set for the end of 2012 already, originally set to release somewhere around when Diablo III would be dropped – instead D3 was delayed until 2012 and Star Wars is now free to become the biggest MMORPG release of the season. Once The Old Republic is released, global support will be provided by the Ireland-based base already nearing readiness now.

Gameplay video from E3 2011

BioWare and LucasArts tell us that those that have pre-ordered the game and have or will redeem their Pre-Order Code at the Code Redemption Center at SWTOR.com before the game officially gets released will be eligible for Early Game Access plus an in-game “Color Stone” to instantly change the color of your weapon’s “visual effects.” Your blaster blasts and your lightsaber blades, essentially. Those who wish to pre-order the game still can at the SWTOR pre-order page right this second. Grab it!

And what are those Star Wars characters doing there in the picture? Let me tell you, ladies and gentlemen – the cost and the characters have to do with one another, but they certainly don’t seem to be equalling out. First, you may have seen this harddrive before – the same device comes in packs with Gears of War 3 and Modern Warfare 3, amongst others. Those of you who want to get the harddrive by itself will have to pay a penny that’s much more pretty than you could have ever imagined: $130 USD. Not quite the droids we were looking for.

So wait, you could get this Xbox branded harddrive with 320GB for $130 USD OR you could head to Target and get a lovely looking Seagate 320GB harddrive for less than half that price at $60. What’s the big deal here, Microsoft gaming devision, are you trying to pull the wool over our eyes? No way, man, of course not, there’s something in there that’ll blow your socks off, that’s why the HD costs so much!

What is it? Do tell!

It’s Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, of course!

A couple things to consider here: this game costs $20 USD on its own here in the USA, and the game is not available with the harddrive in Japan, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia and the UAE. So those countries are out the $20 USD value, and the rest of us get a great deal! Wait a second… math. Think this one through, ladies and gentlemen.

If you are the geek sort that works in an environment where you have to wear pants and dress up with a tie, I am sorry for you. At least you can show how geeky you are with these wild tie tacks. The things look like little metal lightsabers. They are made of cast brass, but they look like pewter to me. I think the Sith Lord might have worn this to his Senate meetings.

They come in styles based on Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber handle and Vader’s saber handle. The closeups show some nice details. I wonder if you have to polish them since they are made from brass. Naturally, a Japanese firm makes the things and this is another example of Star Wars tie-ins that are very weird (see what I did right there).

These aren’t cheap considering most of us rarely wear a tie; you can get one of the styles for about $40. The company that is selling them is called Kotobukiya and it’s not clear if they will ship to other countries. These would be perfect at your fancy dinner party of geeks to go with those ThinkGeek candlestick holders we saw last week.

There are more Star Wars branded products out there than you can shake a stick at making many fans of the franchise angry that George Lucas pimps out our childhood memories to just about anyone. The place that makes some of the coolest licensed gear is ThinkGeek and I have yet to be disappointed by stuff that it offers. ThinkGeek has a new Star Wars item that is called the Star Wars Lightsaber Candlestick.

The candlestick base is made from solid metal and is a perfect reproduction of Darth Vader’s lightsaber. The base comes with three no drip red candle sticks to put in it. This would be the perfect geek touch for your Christmas party since the candlestick is listed as shipping on December 5. Once you burn through the included red candles, you can use any tapered base candle for a replacement.

This is an officially licensed collectible. The hilt is 8.5-inches long and the red candle blade is 10-inches long. You can unscrew the base that stands the candlestick up when you want to play with the weapon. Each of the candlesticks will sell for $39.99. Check out the video below to see the thing in action.

Of all the places in the world to open a support facility, it had to be Ireland that took on the task of providing support to masses for the new Star Wars MMORPG game The Old Republic as it ramps up for launch on December 20th and 22nd. Of course I and we have no reason to be saying such a thing, in fact such an island base will likely be the greatest place to avoid the craziest of game players that’ll more than likely try to swim to the support group in hopes of getting their lightsaber license re-activated after having chopped up too many ewoks. You following me? If you are, this is definitely going to be the game for you.

BioWare, the group responsible for blasting the game out into outer space with a global launch and full support for the entire user base along with EA have announced just this past week that the drop date for The Old Republic will indeed be the 20th of December, 2011, and the 22nd of that same month and year for the USA and the entirety or Europe respectively. BioWare has noted that they expect The Old Republic to be “the biggest online launch in history” and is currently putting the final touches on both underlying technical bits for stability as well as game systems and tutorials.

EA senior vice president of the BioWare label Dr Ray Muzyka had a bit to say about the support facility in particular:

“MMO launches are complex, and we are determined to set a new standard for a high quality, stable, smooth launch for our fans. Our new BioWare facility and team in Galway is critical to ensuring we deliver on that goal. We’ve got a solid base of people here already in Galway.” -Muzyka

This base will be made up of around 400 individuals who will certainly be sitting their their hand taped to the phone receiver (or the headset taped to their head, of course), answering those support calls fans from around the world are sure to send in 100% constantly from the launch of the game till its demise many years down the line. Muzyka hopes to set “a new standard” in customer support with this game – let’s hope they can do it!

Take a hot chick and put her in a DIY anything that is from a geek flick and you have instant win. The DIY R2-D2 helmet that we saw a while back was a perfect example of Star Wars DIY. Here is another example of Star Wars DIY and this is hotter than the helmet if you ask me. I missed this when it turned up on the Star Wars Blog back in July, but it surfaced again recently.

The lady in the photos is Jennifer Landa and she crafted this Death Star dress by hand and headed out to Comic-Con in San Diego. Landa was crafty in creating the dress. The big skirt was made from paper-Mache applied to a beach ball and then cut in half. The paint started with gray and then all the details worn on the skirt are made with craft foam, fabric tape, and paint. It looks really cool.

The headband thingy is geeky too with a big tie fighter on it. Apparently, the TIE Fighter is a toy made by Micro Machines. I had no idea they had things that were so large in the collection. Specifically it’s a plastic toy version of Vader’s own TIE Interceptor. Check out more pics in the gallery.

It’s no coincidence that Verizon has a promotion going with the folks at Lucasfilm promoting the brand new release of the Star Wars movies on Blu-ray. Verizon has been working with the owners of the Star Wars franchise for some time now, going so far as to release a special R2-D2 edition Droid device approximately one year ago this month. What the folks at Verizon and Lucasfilm have for you this week is a text-sending promotion in which you’ll receive a lovely video of some highlights from the series, all centered around a single character. You’ll be able to do this on your Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, or any other video-capable device, for the most part.

Lucky for you, we’ve got the video for you to peek at here, just in case you don’t want to waste any of your data for this month, that is. If you love to rack it up, go for it! What we’re looking at here is several scenes featuring everyone’s favorite hyper-talkative droid C3P0. If we wanted to go so far as to think the R2-D2 version of the DROID were successful enough to get a follow-up, we’d say this would be a sign that C3PO was next. As it is, the original R2-D2 didn’t do all that spectacular, so we’ll be having to do our own modifications to get a golden DROID for now.

You’ll notice in the text for the promo that the word DROID has a trademark TM after it. This always appears after the word Droid because that word is trademarked by Lucasfilm. It’s not only this advertisement that you’ll see it, the TM then connecting to the bottom of the page where it tells you who the real owner of the word is. Imagine that!

Also, for those of you who have been confused about the difference between Android and Droid in the past, you’re not alone: nearly every single time I speak to a person about what I do for a living, inevitably the question is asked: what is Droid? Does Google make Droid? The answer is no, Google does not make Droid, but what I think you’re asking is does Google make Android? Android is a word used by Google as the name for their mobile operating system, while the word Droid, owned by Lucasfilm and coming from the Star Wars franchise, is licensed by Verison for use on their devices where they see fit. Any type of device can be a DROID device, regardless of manufacturer.

Cleared up? What are you still doing here? Why aren’t you out buying the Blu-ray disks now?! Oh my god what if they’re sold out?!

He has been behind the two iconic franchises of my youth with Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Lucas has pimped Star Wars out more than I like in some instances, and he keeps changing things in the films that I thought were already excellent. Still, he is good for something epic every now and again.

Take for instance the building that Lucasfilm is creating in Singapore. The building is what you see in the rendering here. It will be the home of Lucasfilm in Singapore and is already under construction and set for completion next year. The building looks like a giant Sandcrawler. I always thought that building would be the scale of a Sandcrawler in the real world. The building will have animation studios and house ILM Singapore and LucasArts Singapore.

The building will also have eight floors of retail office space and retail shopping space will be included on the first floor. There will be a public park area, which appears to be under the building as well as an elevated public garden. The building will also house a data center, production capability and a 100-seat theater inside.

I am not sure if I want to drive at to Cali, find George Lucas, and kick him in both of his testicles for changing the Star Wars films again or be pumped that the Blu-ray release is very close. These are after all some of the most iconic and memorable movies from my childhood. The reality is I am feeling a little of both right now. I mentioned a few weeks back that Lucas had said changes were coming.

One of those changes is a big one for Star Wars purists. In Return of the Jedi when Vader finally turns away from the dark side and tosses the emperor off the balcony, he did it in silence in the original. I can remember vividly how surprised I was by that change given little warning when seeing the original. Now in the Blu-ray version Vader says, “No… Noooooo!” as he hurls the emperor to his blue flaming death.

I’m not sure how I feel about it, it doesn’t really hurt anything, my kids will think nothing of it. They ask me what the originals were like on occasion when we watch the flicks on DVD or on TV and I tell them about what they were like in my youth. It’s kind of fun and certainly gets us talking about the films. What do you think, good, bad or indifferent? Check out the new clip in the video below.

When I look at this Han Solo carbonite silicone ice tray I can’t help but wonder why. Why do I not have one of these. Put some grape juice or other dark juice in this and you could have your own carbonite solo floating in your punch bowl. This would be perfect for your punch bowl during your Star Wars Blu-ray viewing party.

The tray has space for six little cubes and one larger cube of ice. I can only assume that large cube is for a punch bowl, or a really, really big glass. The tray comes by way of a Japanese company called Kotobukiya. You can order the tray up right now and it is even on sale.

The tray goes for $13.50 and if you want a different style, you can also get R2-D2 trays too. These are the ice trays you are looking for. If they only had a Death Star punch bowl to go with these it would make for the perfect geek party.

One of the things I am looking forward to is the launch of the Star Wars franchise on Blu-ray. I am really looking forward to the 1080p resolution for checking out my favorite sci-fi movies on my projector screen. We all know that back before the three newer films hit theaters George Lucas went back and tweaked the original films to update them for new audiences. The original films also got some new content that wasn’t there the first time around when I was a kid.

With the franchise coming to Blu-ray, apparently the new discs are getting some tweaks of their own. Some of the tweaks will be subtle with things like better visuals, removing things like the puppeteers arms in some scenes and other things. Some of the changes might not be so subtle though. Apparently, Lucas has added some surprises to the new films.

What those surprises might be is unknown at this time. However, reports are claim that there will be new things to notice in the films on Blu-ray. For instance, the hairy-eared puppet that was Yoda in the original films will be all computer generated now. There will be other things too. Considering the tweaks the original films received, I am sure fans will be pouring over the new discs when they launch on September 16 to find out.

I am a big fan of Star Wars as are most geeks. I think that it’s really cool to see girls that are fans of Star Wars too. It’s easy to think of Star Wars fans as a bunch of guys, but that isn’t the case. Check out the is hottie named Jenn Hall that created her own Star Wars R2D2 theme helmet for riding her scooter. Hall is a pastry artist by day and geek by night.

The helmet may have started its life as your typical glossy black brain bucket, but some tape, silver paint and blue accents later the thing is a geek work of art. The build process looks like it took some work to get it just right. You can see a slew of different photos on Jen’s website that shows her making the helmet.

The little projections on the helmet are apparently made from cut down PVC pipe. I think it would have been equally awesome had she created a helmet that had the round hair things that Leia wore in the original flick. Jen says after she completed the project she wore it around the house and then wore the helmet to bed. I bet her email is flooded with geek marriage proposals.

If you are a Star Wars geeks that has enough confidence to pull off clothing that has characters on it and has a penchant for sweaters, this one is epic. An Etsy seller going by the name EricaKnit has an awesomely geeky sweater offer that is custom made to fit you and looks like R2D2. The sweaters aren’t cheap at $450 but you can bet the well-dressed geek will want one.

The maker that made this sweater had no idea that the product would prove so popular when the product was listed. The maker notes that at his point there are so many orders for the sweaters that her time is filled up until December. She is still taking orders if you can wait. Each of the sweaters is knitted by hand and is a raglan-style.

The sweater is made to order based on your measurements. The yarn used is 100% smooth merino wool so they won’t be itchy. However, the maker can use other materials too if you prefer. The time to make the sweater and ship it is roughly 6-8 weeks. The only downside is you have to hand wash the sweater.

LEGO + Star Wars + Remote control = Awesome. A dude going by the name Ickelpete has apparently been working on the bot of awesome you see here since last year. The dude has work in progress pictures on his flickr page that go back to last summer showing him at work on various parts of this little droid. The finished product appears to be life-size.

It’s made out of a bunch of different bricks and has all the little touches for the movie droid. It’s too bad it can’t project a tiny Leia on the ground too. Its remote controlled and has a middle tripod leg that comes out of the droids belly when it needs to motivate and it can then move forwards and backwards. The dome can also twist and turn.

This may be the coolest LEGO project in the Star Wars universe. It even has flashing lights on the dome. Pete constructed the robot for the LEGO Space event at the National Space Center UK. I hope he won a prize because the droid is epic.

Lindsay Boo Barrasse may well be the ideal geek girlfriend me thinks. She’s hot and she took it upon herself to construct a Princess Leia costume. Why did she make the costume you ask? Does it really matter? She’s hot and dressed like Princess Leia. Granted I would have been more impressed had she created the gold bikini Jaba made Leia wear.

Still, Lindsay created a very cool costume and it is made out of duct tape. I assume the tall boots she already owned, they don’t appear to be cobbled together from tape. The trademark Princess Leia hair donuts are actual rolls of black duct tape on a headband of some sort.

Lindsay topped the costume off with a toy laser gun and went out on the town. Check out all the photos to see the costume for yourself. If anyone knows Lindsay, ask her to get some gold duct tape and ping us with the follow-up Jaba costume.

Microsoft and LucasArts have revealed a special Star Wars themed Xbox 360 console, the “Kinect Star Wars” bundle, intended to tie in with the new game of the same name. Shown for the first time at Comic-Con this week, the custom console looks to Star Wars’ droids for its inspiration: the 360 itself is dressed as R2-D2, while the included controller gets a C-3PO makeover.

Meanwhile, the Kinect sensor itself is finished in white, while there’ll also be a wired headset included in the box. Kinect Star Wars itself allows gamers to control lightsabers and perform Force moves simply by waving their arms around, as well as pilot Speeder Bikes and take part in Pod races. It’s designed to work with both one- or two-players, and adapt to the second gamer jumping in and out as the game progresses.

LucasArts says that elements from all six of the movies – originals and prequels – have been incorporated, but don’t let that put you off. Star Wars Kinect will go on sale in time for the holidays, alongside the new 360 console bundle. No word on pricing for the special edition Xbox at this stage.

I was too young to catch the first two Star Wars flicks when I was a kid in the theater. I did watch Return of the Jedi in the theater about six times in one week when it opened though. I called both my grandparents and my various aunts and uncles looking for anyone to take me to see it again. I liked that flick a lot and I even had my own metal Return of the Jedi lunch box I rocked in grade school.

I loved that box, but inevitably, it would get squished on the bus and end up not closing correctly. Few lunch boxes are made from metal today, they all tend to be insulated plastic or just hard plastic. Thermos has been around forever as far as I know. In fact, it was the brand of drink holder that came with my old Jedi lunch box. The new thermos R2D2 lunch box is not metal.

It’s a cylinder shaped insulated plastic lunch box with a zippered droid dome on top to let your kids get access to the lunchroom treats inside. The lunchbox even has a button you can press to activate sounds and annoy the heck out of the teachers patrolling the lunchroom. The price isn’t noted for the cool lunchbox, but it can’t be too expensive. If you have a little Star Wars fan this is the perfect lunchbox for back to school.

Chris Malloy of Australia has developed a hoverbike that looks strikingly familiar. This is the first generation prototype that has some definite similarities to the science fiction floating cycles seen in the Lucas film. It is not currently in production, but Chris hopes to bring them to market in about a year. The bike is classified as an ultralite, so there is currently no need of a pilot’s license to operate one.

The bike flies via two ducted propellers, one in the front and back. There is no need for a tail rotor, because the propellers spin in opposite directions. The engine is a 1,170 cc 4-stroke that is capable of taking the hoverbike to altitudes of up to 10,000 feet and speeds of up to 173 miles per hour. The bike hasn’t undergone flight and safety testing, so we won’t be surprised if that pushes back the product launch by at least another year.

It looks impressive with its sleek Kevlar coated body, but we are not likely to see any flying around the forest any time soon. Thrill seekers will have to wait a while before they can actually experience the hoverbike for themselves. One concern we have about the bike’s design is the open duct area above the front and rear propellers. It seems like important body parts might accidentally get chopped off if they happen to fall in. The price is estimated to be $40,000, but that is likely to change as we get closer to the actual release.

Star Wars fans the wait is over. Microsoft is bringing a Star Wars title to the Xbox lineup. Although not clear on the exact title, it appears to be simply Star Wars Kinect. The body control of the Kinect puts you in direct control of the action. Not clear on the voice control capability, they didn’t show any voice control functions in today’s reveal. What we did see looks very promising, and we are looking forward to getting our hands on the demo.

Star Wars Kinect puts the player one step closer to actually being able to use the power of The Force. The usual light saber wielding can be seen in the short clip we saw at E3 today, along with other abilities like Force Push. The graphics look like what we would expect from the Xbox 360, doing a fine job of showing Jedis jumping, slashing, and blasting their way through hoards of droid troops.

With the customization from the newly available Kinect Fun Labs, maybe we will be able to put our own faces and bodies into the game in place of the stock Jedi, but probably just getting our hopes up on that one. Another key point they didn’t mention this morning was the release date. We are guessing sometime this year, but that is just a guess. One thing was clear, this is not a Star Wars themed workout video for the Kinect. This looks to be the next serious installment in the Star Wars games arena.

I mentioned a cool LEGO kit yesterday that is the largest Technic set LEGO has ever offered at about 2,000 pieces. That LEGO kit is nothing compared to this DIY LEGO construct that Marshal Banana spent nine months building. That is a long time for the birthing process of a 3-foot long 10,000-piece Star Wars Sandcrawler. I would have never finished something this epic. The crawler has remote control steering and is incredibly detailed.

I’m trying to not have a nerd aneurism over the trifecta of geek perfection this thing embodies with LEGO, RC hardware, and Star Wars all in one device. The crane the Sandcrawler has is also remote controlled as is the conveyor belt. The interior of the crawler is fully detailed and looks like the set of the latest LEGO Star Wars video game.

There is so much to talk about and see on this project that worlds can’t do the thing justice. You have to check out the video below to see what the Sandcrawler has to offer. This is a good way to spend nine months of work for a geek with time on his hands.

I bet when the Jedi have their annual picnic each year, this is the corncob holder that they use. This thing is really cool, yet weird at the same time. I almost had a stroke trying to figure out how to meld Star Wars jokes and Beavis and Butthead references into one post. You truly would be the Great Cornholio with one of these. This is a concept product from Shed Samovar and it should be made.

We used to have fights when I was a kid over who got to use the corncob holders at my house shaped like corncobs. I can’t imagine the fights the Cornobi would have caused. The only downside is that it only puts a handle on one side of the cob. Typically, you need a handle on each side to get a good grip. You will have to eat this thing like an ice cream cone.

The top of the lightsaber has three prongs that stab into the corncob to keep it steady. This might be only marginally useful, but I would so buy it. It would look great in the drawer next to my Star Trek Enterprise pizza cutter. Check out the parody video as bizarre as the Cornobi below.

I guess like most neighborhoods, mine is apparently packed with mostly idiots. Few here have a sense of humor and they don’t really tolerate anything out of the norm. I guess that’s why the homeowners association doesn’t like my yard. We all have these big rolling trashcans and if you leave it on the curb more than 15 seconds after the truck rolls off, you will get a warning notice in the mail. I wonder if they would let this R2-D2 trashcans slide a little.

This thing is so epic if my neighbor had one, I would let him leave it out all the time. We on occasion have trashcans stolen from around here though. I am sure a can this cool wouldn’t last long in some places. The upside is that you would be able to find who had your can. I bet with some masking tape, paint, and time anyone could pull this off.

I don’t know how the person who made this came up with the idea, but the can looks fantastic. It reminds me a little bit of that cool R2-D2 that we saw last September that the dude built and could actually ride inside. To the maker of this can, we salute you. I’d also like to see a build log on this design. The downside is that my kids would end up trying to play in the can and end up all stinky and gross.

There are some things in the geek world that you can’t combine without having issues, like Batman and Jim Carrey for instance. There are other things that you can combine to form something that geeks will gravitate too like light to a black hole. Robots and lightsabers are one of the things that geeks will gravitate too. What you see here is an industrial robot recreation of one of the few redeeming qualities to the first of the new Star Wars flicks.

The fight between the Jedi and the red and black spiky dude was epic. One of these Yaskawa industrial robots is wielding the traditional Jedi lightsaber and the other has the dual sided staff-style that the pointy Sith used. I don’t think you need a good reason at all to have robots fighting with lightsabers, but this does show off just how dexterous and agile these bots are.

The robots are from the Yaskawa Motoman industrial line. They look like the sort of bots you would see on a car assembly line. The fight starts slow and boring and then things speed up and it’s actually pretty cool. Check out the video below for yourself to see the battle between Darth Roboticus and Master Indu Robo.

I bet we have all seen those goofy ads that Microsoft uses to push Windows 7. The ads are designed to make you think that everyone had a hand in designing Windows 7 and shows supposedly real people in various settings as they had ideas for features that are in Windows 7 today. A geek has taken that commercial idea and made it much more entertaining than Microsoft was able to do.

The premise is that the ads are for all the people that had the idea for the Death Star. The geeky videos show people in some cool Star Wars costumes talking abut when they had their big Death Star idea. I wonder how happy George Lucas will be about these ads.

You have Chewbacca, Darth Vader, and good ol’ TK-421 all talking about their ideas. These things were apparently produced with real costumes and green screens to add the background. I really like the Chewbacca video with the Storm Trooper doing sign language in the bottom corner. I wonder if that trooper is really singing anything or if he is just going through the motions. Check out the videos below.

The company says the selection processor for the films was “exhaustive” and I bet it was. Prime Focus will use its proprietary View-D processes on the film that is currently set for a theatrical release on February 12, 2012. “It was incredibly important to me that we have the technology, the resources and the time to do this right,” said Star Wars creator George Lucas. “I’m very happy with the results I’ve been seeing on Episode I.”

Industrial Light & Magic supervisor John Knoll will closely supervisor the 3D conversion of the film. “Getting really good results from stereo conversion requires a lot of attention to detail and it is imperative that you take the time to get it right – and that’s just what we’re doing,” said Knoll. ”We’re taking a different approach than you might expect. George’s vision has been to add dimension to the film in subtle ways. This isn’t a novelty conversion, with things jumping out at the audience; our goal has been to enhance the classic Star Wars theatrical experience, utilizing the latest cinematic tools and techniques.”

Star Wars is hands down one of the most popular sci-fi franchise ever made. The original three films are my favorites, but there were some aspects of the three new films that were cool. I liked the red spiky dude with the light saber staff in The Phantom Menace for instance. You may recall that George Lucas had said he would be bringing the flicks back to theaters in 3D.

If you were excited about the chance to see the films in 3D, Episode I has been gifted with an official launch date for the 3D version in studios. The flick will hit theaters on February 10, 2012. That is a bit less than a year away. February is a strange date; I would have figured these flicks would see a summer release.

Love it or hate it, this flick should make for some interesting 3D effects with the fights between Darth Maul and the Jedi and the invasion sequences. Perhaps Jarjar Binks won’t be so irritating in 3D. The pod race sequence should rock in 3D too.
