Sony Online Entertainment to go independent in sale to investment firm

Today, Sony Online Entertainment announces they’ve been acquired by Columbus Nova, an investment management firm. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though it does mean Sony Online Entertainment will become an independent entity. According to a blog post by a community relations representative from SOE, “It will be business as usual and all SOE games will continue on their current path of development and operation. In fact, we expect to have even more resources available to us as a result of this acquisition.”

H1Z1: free-to-play MMO zombie-style gameplay by SOE

The team at Sony Online Entertainment has let it be known that they’re going in to the zombie business, massively multiplayer online gaming style. This game will be coming out in the vein of DayZ and Rust, appearing at first to have more of a "Wild West" nature than the overly-structured bits of Dead Rising 3. This MMO was originally called "H1Z1 Apocalypse", shortened to H1Z1 for the final release, ready to dump you into an open world full to the hilt with zombies galore.

EverQuest Next Landmark heads to Closed Beta

This week at GDC 2014, the team at Sony Online Entertainment behind the game EverQuest Next Landmark have let it be known that they’re leaving Alpha mode. After having been in Alpha for some weeks, the game is officially ready to take on Closed Beta mode, a much more (hopefully) stable environment where users will have an experience much closer to what the delivery of the final product will bring. This release will begin on March 26th.

EverQuest Next: Landmark alpha imminent, stage set for DIY MMORPG

The game EverQuest Next is one part of a new game that'll be released by Sony Online Entertainment inside 2014 in Alpha mode. The other half of this equation is called EverQuest Next: Landmark. While the base of the game includes gameplay that allows you to live and fight from a 3rd-person perspective in an environment called Norrath, "Landmark" allows the user to transform Norrath with a unique set of in-game creation tools.
