I/O 2012 is Google TV’s last chance for a reboot

Google I/O 2012 is almost upon us, and already Google TV is rallying for its second charge at the smart TV segment. Sony and Vizio have each revealed their Google TV set-top boxes, throwing hardware up for pre-order, and while Android tablets are expected to dominate the search giant’s keynotes this week, there’s likely to be at least a little time spared for the company’s TV strategy. It’s vital it does, too; sparse updates to the Apple TV in its third-generation has given Google a window in which to act, but it’s an opportunity that’s rapidly expiring.

Sony NSZ-GS7 takes 2nd try at Google TV on July 22 for $199

Sony has confirmed pricing and availability for its second-gen Google TV range, throwing open pre-orders for the smart TV kit on the eve of Google I/O 2012. The Sony NSZ-GS7 Internet Player will go up for pre-order today priced at $199, with shipping expected from July 22 in the US. Meanwhile, the NSZ-GP9 Internet Blu-ray player will arrive in time for the holiday season, priced at $299. Both come with a redesigned remote that aims to cut down on the button confusion of the first-gen hardware.

LG and friends form the Smart TV Alliance

LG and TP Vision, representing Philips TVs, have today announced the formation of a Smart TV Alliance. The goal of the alliance is to create a “non-proprietary ecosystem for application developers to create attractive, platform-independent services,” with several Japanese television manufacturers said to be in the process of joining already. It looks like TV manufacturers are wary of developers being bearish on the development of apps for multiple Smart TVs, aiming to simplify things instead. Read The Full Story

Infinitec Pocket TV makes your dumb TV smart

Infinitec has taken to Kickstarter to raise funds for product it wants to bring to market called the Pocket TV. The company promises that the Pocket TV will make any TV into a smart TV. It's an interesting concept, which we have seen before. If you have an older TV that still works, and you don't want to fork over the money for smart TV just plug this in and get all the benefits of smart TV without having to spend as much cash. Intel viewer-tracking smart TV in 2012 say media execs

Intel is planning a smart TV platform to rival cable and satellite providers, it's claimed, hoping to lure subscribers with cheaper content while using viewer-identification tech to better target advertising. The project has been mired in negotiations for months, according to Reuters' sources, with the promise of set-top boxes that can track the age group and gender of the people watching - thus allowing demographically-suited adverts to be shown - apparently not yet sufficient to persuade content owners to free up channels from traditional providers. KDDi launching Android powered smart box

KDDi has announced that it will be releasing a “Smart Box” to sit under customer's televisions. The box, reminiscent of Nintendo’s Wii, will run Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich. KDDi say that the box will be trialled initially by a select group of customers, then rolled out on a wider basis later. The all-round specs are impressive: a 42/55-inch 1080p IPS 120Hz panel is combined with a dual-core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon processor, five megapixel webcam, 6GB of local storage, and Ice Cream Sandwich. LG Google TVs arrive late May

LG will begin selling Google TV sets in late May, a senior exec has confirmed, with US buyers finally able to pick up the long-promised smart televisions. Sales in the US will kick off in the week of May 21, LG TV’s executive vice president confirmed to Reuters, with the company gauging the response before it decides whether to offer the new internet-connected models in Europe and Asia.
