Broadcom signs Myriad and Sling deals for Android, streaming TV everywhere

The folks at Broadcom have dropped a couple of silent bombs this week in announcements of deals with both SlingBox's EchoStar and with Myriad for their Alien Vue solution, these deals resulting ultimately in two things: a chip made by Myriad that allows for TV Everywhere NOT just limited to wi-fi in your own home and Android apps on your TV set-top box! With their deal with Sling, they're set to create their upcoming BCM7425 SoC (or chip, if you prefer) with embedded Sling place-shifting technology. With Myriad Alien Vue, Broadcom will be supporting Android apps on the set-top boxes which they power. Read The Full Story

Time Warner Cable offering free Slingbox Pro-HD to top-tier customers

Time Warner Cable is planning to offer free SlingBox Pro-HD set-top boxes to its customers starting in September. Customers that sign up for Time Warner Cable's $99 per month Wide Internet service will get a $300 rebate for the total cost of the device. A SlingBox set-top box lets users watch their home TV programming from anywhere that they can connect to the internet. Read The Full Story

SlingPlayer for Google TV beta opens [Video]

Sling has thrown open its beta for SlingPlayer for Google TV, allowing those with one of Google's STBs - like the Logitech Revue - to stream content from their Slingbox Solo or Slingbox PRO-HD. Dubbed "SlingPlayer for Connected Devices" the new system bypasses a software upgrade or app, and instead works as a Flash-based sit specifically coded for the Google TV platform. EchoStar's SlingLoaded HDS-600RS freesat+ DVR has gone up for pre-order, priced at £349.99 ($570). The 500GB STB includes twin-tuners for SD/HD satellite reception, along with integrated Slingbox functionality for streaming live and pre-recorded content to a SlingCatcher or one of the company's mobile apps. Verizon to pair 4G LTE smartphones with Slingbox in new offer

Sling Media and Verizon have announced a deal in which LTE mobile broadband subscribers can get a Slingbox media streamer and a copy of SlingPlayer bundled in with their monthly subscription. The app will be provided for select Verizon 4G smartphones, which currently means one or more of Samsung's, HTC's, the 4G Galaxy Tab or Motorola's. Read The Full Story

SlingPlayer gets Windows Phone 7 video demo

We've known SlingPlayer for Windows Phone 7 was coming since March, but now a video demo of the app in action has been released.  TheMisterSling's clip shows the app running on an LG handset, complete with the usual on-screen remote control functionality for managing your streaming DVR, STB or other source. Vulkano place-shifting DVR hits preorder

Monsoon Multimedia are taking preorders for their Vulkano set-top box, which the company reckons can replace not only your TiVo but your Slingbox and Roku too.  Basically a place-shifting streamer with optional DVR functionality and various smartphone clients for remote use over 3G/WiFi, the Vulkano also promises to keep pace with new STBs; the company has said they'll be releasing updates to add Google TV compatibility, among other things.
