If you’ve a taste for WiMAX but a near-empty wallet, Clear reckons it can make do with the meager scrapings left at the bottom. The company is running a week of holiday deals, and so far you can pick up the CLEAR Spot 4G mobile hotspot for just $20 rather than the usual $99; the Apple-devoted should hold off, since as of Thursday you’ll be able to grab a CLEAR iSpot – complete with a $25 month-to-month service plan – for just $20.

The iSpot – which is locked down to wirelessly connecting to Apple devices, though there are various hacks out there if you’re feeling unofficially ambitious – is usually $79. Meanwhile there are two-for-one offers on USB modems, or – as of tomorrow – you can pick up a USB CLEAR modem and get a free home modem too.

[Thanks AJ!]

Even with its Black Friday deals, Apple is loath to offer money off its range; that’s why news that Radio Shack is offering $50 off all iPhones until December 11 2010 and, if you’ve an iPhone 3G or 3GS to trade in, potentially bringing the cost of a new iPhone 4 down to just $25. The price cut makes the iPhone 3GS $50, a 16GB iPhone 4 $150, and a 32GB iPhone 4 $250.

However, thanks to a tweak to the value of older iPhones in Radio Shack’s Trade & Save exchange program, owners of previous Apple smartphones can get more for their handsets. A working – i.e. fully functional and no screen cracks – iPhone 3G nets you a $75 credit, while a working iPhone 3GS gets you $125.

Since those trade-in credits can be paired with the $50 discount, a 16GB iPhone 4 is down to just $25, though you’ll obviously need to sign up to a new, two-year AT&T agreement. The deals are only available in-store, rather than online.

Read our BlackBerry Torch 9800 review, loving the touchscreen/QWERTY combo but unwilling or unable to stump up the $200 AT&T are asking in-store? Amazon have the answer, with a $550 instant discount on the Torch’s list price, bringing it down to $99.99 or just half of what AT&T want.

That’s of course assuming you’re content signing up to a two-year agreement, with the usual data package and voice plan. Alternatively, Amazon are selling the Torch contract-free, though you’ll need to find $599.99 if that’s your preferred option; we’re guessing it’s still SIM-locked to AT&T, too, though that’s not clear from the retailer’s listing.

The Torch has a 3.2-inch touchscreen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard and WiFi b/g/n, along with triband UMTS/HSPA and Bluetooth. It runs the latest version of RIM’s OS, BlackBerry 6, which you can see demonstrated in the video below.

The Woot/Amazon aquisition was announced yesterday in a characteristically irreverent blog post by CEO Matt Rutledge. We don’t often see takeover bids described as “similar to what I felt in college on graduation day: excitement about getting a check from my folks combined with nausea from a hellacious bender the night before” but we’re not arguing with the sentiment.

Obviously this deal is only available today, and only while Woot themselves have stock. No word on exactly how much that might amount to; Amazon’s warehouses are big, obviously, but we can’t imagine them wanting to get through the entire contents at this price too quickly.

There’s also a DVD burner, Intel GMA 4500M graphics, WiFi b/g and an ExpressCard 34/54 slot. Ports include three USB 2.0, VGA, audio in/out and an old-fashioned modem, and OS is Windows Vista Home Basic with Microsoft Works pre-loaded.

The L355 will go on sale – in stores and online – from Sunday August 16th, and will be in limited supply so we wouldn’t hang around if you’re interested. Needless to say, if you’ve considered a netbook because of its cost-effectiveness, but lamented the smaller display, this Toshiba delivers plenty more performance and usability for the price. Don’t just take our word for it, either; Laptop Mag have reviewed the L355 and found that a relatively compact hard-drive, missing webcam and HDMI port aside, it’s a surprisingly strong performer.

Sprint will charge you $59.99 per month over the course of a two-year agreement, with 5GB of included data each month and a $36 activation fee. Over the course of the contract you’ll have paid $1,475.77.

As for Verizon, they offer two plans – either $39.99 per month for 250MB of data or $59.99 for 5GB like Sprint – and right now Amazon are throwing in up to a $35 rebate to cover your activation charge. That means you can have a MiFi 2200 for as little as $959.77 if you’re a low data user, or $1,439.77 for the same plan as Sprint.

The Pre in question is new (rather than refurbished) and requires a two-year agreement with Sprint, but that’s no different to what the carrier themselves (or Amazon) expect of you.

No telling what deal – if any – the company will be offering once this particular rebate expires, so if you’re temped by a Palm Pre then best to head over there now. The phone itself should ship on August 5th.

If you’re looking for mobile email access and your budget counts out any of the usual smartphone suspects, you could do worse than head over to Amazon. They’re currently listing the Peek mobile emailer at $19.99, a 60-percent saving on the regular price.

The only drawback is that you’ll have to like the aqua (e.g. blue) color scheme, as the gray and cherry models remain at the $49.99 MRSP. You’ll also have to budget for the standard $19.95 monthly rate, which gets you unlimited email access; Amazon don’t seem to have updated their listing to take into account Peek’s cessation of unlimited SMS support for the original Peek device. If you want SMS you’ll have to upgrade to the Peek Pronto.

Still, it’s a bargain and if the user reviews are anything to go by the Peek is a distinctly straightforward way to get mobile email access. No word on how long the discount will last, though, so if you want one we’d recommend buying sooner rather than later.

Back when it launched, the Linksys DMA-2200 Wireless Media Extender retailed for a cool $350. Capable of streaming content from your Windows Media Center in one room, to your big-screen HDTV in another, the DMA-2200 faired reasonably in reviews, hindered by its big sticker price. Now, though, Newegg are listing the DMA-2200 for just $94.99 with free shipping, at which point it becomes a very tempting offer indeed.

Your $95 gets you dual-band WiFi draft-n, ethernet and HDMI connections, together with component, composite, S-Video, S/PDIF and stereo RCA. There’s also an upscaling DVD player built-in.

You’ll need a copy of Windows Media Center in order to use the streaming side of the DMA-2200, but check whatever version of Vista you’re running (if, obviously, you’re using a PC) and you may be surprised to find it lurking there. If you’ve ever tripped and gone flying over a trailing cable hooking up your PC to your TV, this could be the most painless way to avoid ever doing it again.

Somehow putting up with the BlackBerry Storm‘s touchscreen foibles and periodic leaked firmware seems a whole lot more manageable when you’ve only paid $99.99 for it upfront. Amazon US currently have RIM’s first touchscreen smartphone listed for just $99.99, with no pesky rebate involved.

Obviously you need to take out a two-year Verizon service agreement in order to get that price, but it certainly beats Amazon’s previous best figure of $149.99 after a $100 rebate. Right now Verizon Wireless themselves are offering to BlackBerry Storm 9530 handsets for the price of one, though they’re still asking $199.

We’d still call the Storm an acquired taste – its unique “clicking” touchscreen seems to polarize opinion, and we generally find ourselves with the negative charge – but it’s undoubtedly a good multimedia handset. If your BlackBerry use tends to be more video playback with a little messaging on the side, you could find a cheap bargain here.

Ultraportables with integrated optical drives are rare beasts – the netbook world only has one, for instance – and they usually carry a pretty high price premium. That was certainly the case when the VYE S41A first arrived, complete with its convertible 7-inch touchscreen, DVD burner and 800MHz Intel A110 processor: you were looking at around $1,500 when it first launched. Now, Expansys UK have it listed for just £449.99 ($661).

That’s quite a lot of UMPC (or quite a small amount, depending on how you look at it) for the money. Okay, so the processor probably isn’t going to be doing any HD video crunching anytime soon (though if a 600MHz Intel A100 can cope with Windows 7, the S41A should have no problems) but the 80GB hard-drive is reasonable for a companion device of this size, and there’s WiFi, Bluetooth and a similar range of ports as you’d find on a current netbook.

If you fancy a touchscreen ultraportable and simply have to have DVD burning capabilities, or alternatively you’ve been looking at DIY netbook-tablets but don’t have the modding skills, this could be worth a look. Anybody tempted?

Peek are really pushing their email messenger lately, with seemingly a promotion for just about every main event. Next up in the calendar is Valentine’s Day, and in keeping with the loving spirit there’s a two-for-one deal through Amazon.

Add two Peek devices to your cart and you’ll only be charged for one of them. Obviously you’ll have to pay two lots of service charge, but if you were thinking of picking up a couple of Peeks then this is a great way to get them for under forty bucks apiece; anyway, I’m pretty sure love hurts.

If you’re single, or cynical, or only staying together because of the children, you could always sell the second Peek on eBay. The monthly service charge is $19.95 per device.

If the Sony’s HDTV and Blu-ray bundle deal is too steep for your wallet; Walmart has announced its Super Bowl/HDTV deals with much affordable units, plus a $100 gift certificate to stock up the rest of the party staples.

Walmart deals include a reduce price 32-inch Samsung LCD HDTV at $498 and a 46-inch Sony LCD at $1,298, and both unit come with an additional $100 store gift card. It’s said to have discounted at the same level of Black-Friday deals, and not counting the extra $100. I don’t know if you can apply the gift discount on the purchased set, but the extra $100 should be plenty to stock up beers and chips for the big game.

According to the report, the promotion went into effect yesterday; presuming in store only, as there aren’t any online promotes to be founded, and we do not have technical details on the discounted sets.

Apple’s US online store has just gone live with the company’s Black Friday sale, and while there’s no outrageous bargains to be had - not that they were ever likely – there are still discounts in just about every range. Typical cuts include $101 off the new 13-inch late-2008 model MacBook, up to $101 off the iMac desktop, and $11 off an 8GB or 16GB iPod nano.

There’s also $21 off an iPod touch, or the same amount off the iPod classic. The Apple TV has been reduced $21. Accessories and software are also discounted, with everything from iPod cases, laptop bags, power supplies, headphones and speakers being reduced. The iPhone Bluetooth headset has dropped $11 to $88.

Apple’s reduced MacBook prices aren’t as great as the offers from Best Buy and MacMall, and unlike those retailers the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac Pro desktop aren’t discounted at all. However Apple will apparently price-match competitors discounts if you bring proof with you to the store.

A lot of people like to get a head start on their holiday shopping by jumping right into the madness on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. But following the big feast, it can be difficult to drag yourself out of bed Friday morning, super early, only to stand in line after to line to maybe get a good deal. Lucky for you, we’ve compiled some of the greatest savings to be had this Friday and here’s the really great part: you can get them all online. That means no standing out in the cold at 5 a.m. in the dark waiting for store doors to open. No squeezing through stores and sorting through picked over merchandise. Convinced yet? Then, let’s get right to the savings offers you should take advantage of this Black Friday, without leaving your home.

Getting in on the best Black Friday deals is all about knowing where to hunt. Let’s start with the no-brainers first. Amazon.com. If you’re going to shop anywhere online this week, let it be Amazon. In fact, they have turned Black Friday into a week long event. Each day, you can take part in different sales and offers. They’re calling it Black Fri-DAILY, and while today you can save 60% on select headphones, and get other products at great prices, we’re almost positive the deals will only get better as the week progresses.

Newegg.com has several deals going on before Black Friday as well, including a limited offer on a Hanns-G 22″ LCD Display. You can get a great list of products that are on sale at Black Friday prices all week at Black Friday Ads.

Even physical retailers are getting in on the action by offering up exclusive online savings. Take Wal-Mart, for example. You can get everything from toys to electronics for serious bargains. The big electronics stores like Best Buy and Circuit City and office supply stores are offering up big discounts all week.

It all comes down to research. Instead of standing out in the cold on Friday morning, half asleep and stomach aching from over indulging, just sit at your computer and search for sales. You can actually start your shopping now. But if you’re a traditionalist, you’re going to want to keep sites like PlanetBargains, FatWallet and TechBargains on hand for the latest sales info. Have a great Thanksgiving, don’t eat too much and happy shopping!

The situation is unusual because Apple hardware seldom is seen at below-MRSP levels. Apple is particularly strict about pricing, and there’s usually no good reason to shop around. It’s unclear whether this move by Best Buy has had Apple’s blessing or even if the company was aware of it before the promotion launch.

It seems likely that Best Buy are looking to present a strong challenge to suggestions that holiday sales this year will be poor. No indication of how long the sale prices at Best Buy will last, so if you’ve been thinking of picking up a new MacBook or MacBook Pro then now looks like the time to do it.

Both units feature updated version of the UniPhier video processor with thinner profile, Blu-ray live (profile 2.0) and internal HD decoder including DTS-MA via bitstream and PCM over HDMI. Compare to last models, it now supports better chroma processing to convert Blu-ray’s 4:2:0 color encoding to 4:4:4 when uses with compatible displays.

The higher-end model BD55 is $100 more with the additional of Divx support, multichannel analogue outputs and HD codes decoder for analogue segment. It also features high end audio design and components such as high quality insulators, electrolytic capacitors, copper-foil film capacitors and ultra-low-impedance electrolytic capacitors than the little brother. Both units, the 35 and 55 have received favorable reviews from Whathifi at UK.

Acer announced a price reduction across its Aspire one line today, making the UMPCs more affordable in the wake of back-to-school shopping. Now getting that portable PC for your kids or for your on-the-go lifestyle should be a little easier on your wallet.

Acer is the third largest PC vendor on the globe and these price reductions should expand their appeal even more. The AOA150-1570 model, which contains Windows XP Home Edition previously retailed for $399 and will now go for $349. The model that has Linpus Linux Lite was $379 but will now sell for $329. The AOA150-1447, which is intended for users that require a more professional level of functionality, has also come down in price as well and will sell for $399.

As so many parents scramble to find quality UMPCs at affordable prices for their kids and college students look for a PC that will get the job done while on a budget, Acer is appealing to the tech-savvy individual with a fixed dollar amount in mind, and their timing seems to be perfect.

Since it was released, the PS3 has had one major thing working against it, and that’s the high price. It has seen price cuts, but it still remains the most expensive current-gen system on the market. However, if you’re looking to purchase one in the next couple of weeks, you might want to check over at Walmart.

You aren’t actually going to be getting a PS3 for less than $399 from them, however, if you do purchase one of the consoles, you’ll get a nice $100 gift card. So while you haven’t technically saved any money, you will have an extra $100 to spend in-store.

Your best bet is to wait until June 12 and grab the Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle, because we all know you’re probably going to buy the game anyway. Since the del will be good until the 15th, you’ll still get your valuable gift card.

Woot has a deal going on where you get your choice of the light blue or black 3rd Gen, which is the latest generation, iPod Nano for $134.99 and shipping from Woot is always $5. Sure they are refurbished, but they come with a 60 day warranty.

Plus, you get a savings of $65 from the cost of a new 8GB iPod Nano. I am not sure what kind of ghetto packaging these things come in, but you don’t get the software or the instruction manual, just the iPod, USB cable, and earphones (hopefully they’re new ones).

However, the software isn’t exactly hard to come by, and the iPod is so easy you shouldn’t really need an instruction manual for it. However, if you can’t find the software on your own or really need the instruction manual, Woot was kind enough to include links on its page to both.

They’ve done it again. Woot has initiated another Woot Off. For those of you not in the know, a Woot Off is where they sell the same stuff they’ve sold before, mixed in with some new stuff, at some even lower prices than before.

If you aren’t familiar with Woot at all, well, do I have a treat for you; it’s a site where they generally sell one item per day, generally its some sort of electronic gadget, or at the very least, and accessory for one, and they sell it for, from what I’ve seen, an average of around 50% off its normal price, sometimes higher, sometimes lower. During a Woot Off they sell a lot of items in rapid succession and they sell each one until they sell out of it, then they immediately move onto the next one, whereas on a normal day, if they sold out of an item, you’d have to wait until the next day to see what was available.

The Woot Off started roughly 4 minutes ago, so if you need any of their usual GPS, MP3 player, or Roombas hurry up and go there before they sell out, if you can be in it for the long haul you can usually snag some really good gear at a nice price. Click the link below or go to Woot.com to get in on the action!

If you follow the link at the bottom of this page you can pick up an 8GB iPhone that’s been refurbished for $249. For those not too great at math, that’s a savings of $150.

Now, I know that if you’ve waited this long to buy an iPhone, you’re either waiting on more storage capacity or you are waiting on the 3G iPhone. Regardless, at a price this cheap, it might be worth considering buying it anyways just to hold you over until the iPhone you want comes out, which could be a while.

Personally I’ve been holding out for the 3G iPhone, but with a price this low, even I’m considering buying one until the 3G version comes out. If nothing else, it’d be a great time to buy one and get in on the iPhone development program, or the JailBreak Development Program which is slightly less restrictive I hear.

In case your headphones and iPod screen weren’t making you feel isolated enough from the world around you, you can pick up a pair of these goggle type things that connect to your old 5th Gen iPod and make it look like you’re watching whatever it is you are watching on up to a 300” screen. I don’t know, however, why they received a worst Woot of the year nomination.

They are selling at Woot.com for $99 with an iPod case, Pouch, extended battery, power plugs for both the US and Europe and a bunch of other stuff. $99 is at least half of the other prices I saw in a Google search, so, if you were thinking about buying a pair, now would be the time.

Plus, as Woot mentions, you could effectively look like Geordi LaForge from Star-Trek that dude always was the most badass character ever. They also warn that wearing this in public may directly or indirectly result in an ass beating for looking like such a tool, you have been warned.

No format quarrel here, Amazon has both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Sweepstakes that worth approximately $180,000 in retail prize for Hi-def fans. Amazon announced 2008 Blu-Ray and HD-DVD giveaway today that doesn’t require any form of purchase at all but it’s only eligible to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, except residents of New York, who are 18 or older. Limit one entry per person or household.

Sixty lucky winners will be picked from each format, thirty each, and winner will be rewarded with one random choice of Hi-Def player plus a hundred titles! The pick from Blu-Ray player are Sony BDP-S300, Panasonic BD-30 or Philips BDP9000 while The HD-DVD side has Toshiba HD-A30 or HD-A3 HD DVD Player. Choices of movie are not disclosed.

[updated]

“The approximate retail value of each prize is $3,000.00. Total approximate retail value of all of the prizes is $90,000.00. Winners are responsible for paying all costs and expenses related to the prizes that are not specifically mentioned, including but not limited to taxes, and any other expenses that might reasonably be incurred by winners in using the prizes. Winners are required to submit their social security number or tax payer ID to the Sponsor in order to claim a prize.”

Uncle Sam is will be taking ~$1000 though the tax if you win the prize, nothing for free after all. If you can get one of the player for $200-$300, that leaves $700-$800 for 100 movies. If you can sell $10 buck for the movies ( i assume most are cataloged titles) , the drawing is worth nothing but a hardware player. So, play with cautious.

Remember the other day that I told you Circuit City was selling an HD DVD player for under $200? Well in comparison to Walmart, that deal sucks. Walmart is doing something a little different with their holiday promotions this year, they’ve set up a “secret” website that will inform you of deals that will available on various days. One such deal for tomorrow is a sub-$100 HD DVD player.

Yes, it sounds too good to be true, but it’s not. You’ll have to fight the crowds at 8am tomorrow if you want one though. If you were wondering, this is the same Toshiba HD-A2 Walmart was rumored to be carrying soon.

I’ve been reluctant to pick sides in the format wars, but I think I’ve finally seen the light. With prices hitting below the $100 mark for players, I can’t see how Blu-ray will be able to keep up.

I just bought myself the $14.95 USD plan from Skype. You can make unlimited outgoing calls from Skype. This plan rocks, and if you are working at a place like SlashGear around this time (right before CES), you know you are going to have to make plenty of calls!

It has probably already saved me $14.95 from long-distance bills since I purchased the plan yesterday. Although the quality is obviously not as good as a landline, it provides many options in a slick interface. Next up I have to buy a nice iPhone from Linksys so I can use Skype on-the-go!

You have to act fast, because you can only buy the plan for $14.95 until January 31st. Also, Skype is planning to introduce new connection fees that might be put into the Unlimited plan later on.

Black Friday is coming closer each second. We just received a tip that Circuit City is offering $200 shopping spree in store when you sign up for a year of Vonage VOIP service. I don’t think this is a great deal for everyone, but those who are planning to get Vonage VOIP should take advantage of this offer.

Beginning on what’s known as the busiest shopping day of the year, “Black Friday” (November 24), Circuit City is offering its customers a $200 shopping spree toward any purchase in their store when they sign up for a year of Vonage broadband telephone service. New Vonage customers will also receive select devices at no cost after mail-in rebate.
The exciting deal will kick off on November 24 and end on December 2. Consumers can take advantage of this offer at any Circuit City in the US and activate service with the purchase of a Vonage device immediately at any in-store kiosk.

Thanks for the tips Elisa.

…they were stocking up for the BF sale already. Counted about 52 of the Westinghouse 32″ LCD HDTVs ($479.99, W3213) and 30 of the 42″ HDTVs ($999.99, W4207). Also recognized the Advent 15″ LCD TV ($129.99), estimated about 30 of them, along with a bunch of other stuff. Funny thing is, they were all labeled “Product not for sale. Hold for customer [Redacted].”

The number of available unit is unusually high for the usual black Friday, but who knows. I would still recommend lining up just in case.
