Vauxhall FlatbladesCould it be that windscreen wipers are the new wet razor?  Having backed away in overwhelmed fear from the Gillette display rack (um, five blades?) now it seems I’ll be equally overloaded when dealing with rain on my windshield.  Vauxhall (the UK name for Opel cars) has announced its Flatblade wipers – designed without joints, to avoid squeaking, they’re apparently aerodynamic and have an integrated spoiler.  You can only assume that traditional wiper blades are prone to taking off and skewering overhead ducks when cars travel at speed.

Spring-loaded rails make sure that the entire length of the blade is pressed firmly and evenly against your lucky windshield, with all these fancy features adding up to a claimed 50% reduction in wind noise and far less chance of jumping, smearing and sticking.

Vauxhall’s advice is (probably) to throw away your existing car and buy one of its new ones.  Go on, do it now before it’s too late.

Speed signThis is a somewhat contentious one – cool tech meets Big Brother, you could say – but the psychological implications are interesting.  The UK has been trialling a system of licence plate recognition on one of the major highways, which flashes up a car’s registration if it exceeds the speed limit.  Apparently few people paid any attention to seeing their speed lit up on electronic signs, but when it was personalised almost half did slow down.

Rebranding’s a gas

By Chris Davies on Friday, Aug 25th 2006 1 Comment

V-PowerI like cars, but I’m certainly no mechanic.  So all I really know about fuel is that higher RON = better performance.  No bad thing!

Now Shell have rebranded and tweaked their Optimax fuel – it’s up from 98 to 99 RON, and is called V-Power.  Frankly the name doesn’t appeal and I preferred it called Optimax, but when I think about the clumsy mixture of “optimum” and “maximum” in that I cringe anyway, so perhaps I’m just a name snob.

Anyway, it’ll be priced higher than regular fuel and hopefully help you coax out an extra few bhp from whatever engine you’re running.  I’ll give it a try and see how it goes…

I have to confess, I’m not the biggest fan of SUVs.  Not for any tree-tonguing environmental reasons, just because they seem a bit “try too hard” unless they’re actually owned by people who really do need 4×4 capabilities.  I’m talking farmers, people trying to cross deserts and NASA moon rovers, not soccar moms scaling the kerb at the local Walmart.

Land Rover Defender 2007

However, there’s something about the idea of a Land Rover Defender, a 3-door in black, that tickles my car-geek tastebuds.  And now I have a 2007 model to secretly covet, with a new 2.4 litre diesel engine and the bulging bonnet to accomodate it.  My shameful on-road journeys would be made in as close to luxury as the Defender has ever managed, with a redesigned dash featuring heaters that might even work and a radio that picks up more than the shipping forecast.  Meanwhile, my off-road journeys would be aided by a new, lower first gear that promises improved responsiveness.

Sadly I won’t be able to afford both the Land Rover and the several acres of land to play in that my easily-shamed ego would demand.

That old saying “the clothes maketh the man” springs to mind here, or perhaps the somewhat crueler “you can’t polish a turd” – I guess it depends on your opinion of conversion kits that transform the cars of mere mortals into luxury dreams (or at least facsimiles of them).  In this case, UK-based Extreme Cars take a Peugeot 406 Coupe and – in return for anything from £6000 upwards – supply the fibreglass body-panels required to make it look like a pretty convincing replica of a Ferrari 360.

Fake Ferrari 360

Of course, I could put on a lace leotard, high-heels and straddle a canon, but that wouldn’t make me Cher.  There’s something more than a little bit desperate about fake sportscars, despite all the verbiage from owners and enthusiasts that they’re “an homage to beautiful design”.  If that was the case, why not design something that no mainstream car manufacturer could ever consider building?  A design so unique that it says more about you than a four-seater French wannabe sports car in drag could ever manage.  There are plenty of glass-fibre specialists out there who would happily make your imagination into reality.

For those that don’t know it, there’s a picture of a 406 donor car after the jump.

Audi R8 in the wild

By Vincent Nguyen on Wednesday, Aug 16th 2006 1 Comment

I’ve made up my mind that I must HAVE the Audi R8! I’m going to start garage selling all my gadgets and unneeded crap around the house, and maybe – maybe I’ll have enough in 5-8 years!

Ryan Port or Carster.com took some amazing shots of the undisguised Audio A8 right outside of his office in Santa Monica. Check out his interesting encounter with the irritated engineers driving the car, here. I’ve encountered a few incidents when I’ve tried to snap some shots of cars not on the market yet. Trust me, it’s not a pretty sight. The drivers would slur words like “we have your tag and we’ll be hunting you down!” So I can imagine the ordeal Ryan went through to get these two shots for the world to see.

I’ve always thought Peugeots were boring looking car. The French are known for French fries (just kidding); not making cars – right? Think again because this bad boy is short of a pair of wings. The 908 RC hums on a V12 engine putting out around 700 horsepower with 885 pounds per torque. That’s some serious power. Other than that, there’s not a lot more that we can share about this exotic car. Click through for more high resolution images.
