Apple: “No plans” for Siri on older devices

Apple has reportedly confirmed to developers that it has "no plans" to bring Siri, the voice-controlled personal assistant service available on the iPhone 4S, to any older device. Arguing that developers would attempt to implement unofficial access to Siri on iPhone 4, iPad 2 and other earlier iOS devices, one coder contacted Apple with a suggestion that it release a paid upgrade for users to get official Siri support, Michael Steeber reports. Apple's response, however, was clear on the matter.

Siri a “competitive threat” says Google in antitrust downplay

Apple's Siri voice control system is a "significant development" and a "competitive threat" Google chairman Eric Schmidt has admitted, though the concession to the iPhone 4S feature may be more a strategic one than true admiration. Schmidt made the comments during a Senate Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee, questioned around Google's competitiveness and whether it was so large as to be subject to antitrust measures; the former CEO also claimed that Google is not, in fact, dominant in search, praised Microsoft's Bing, PCMag reports, and repeated denials that the company prioritizes its own products in search results.

Siri iPhone 4 hack gets Apple server support

Apple disappointed many iPhone 4 owners with the news that Siri, the digital personal assistant technology, would only be available on the new iPhone 4S, and efforts quickly began to hack Siri onto the older smartphone. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith got the local app running with no problems, but faced Apple's servers refusing to play ball with anything but the newest iPhone. Now, with the judicious application of some validation tokens from an iPhone 4S, it's possible to get Siri on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch up and running, even without official support from Apple itself.
