Pioneer launched a free platform today called Zypr that will offer intelligent voice-controlled assistance features similar to Apple's Siri. Whereas Siri is currently limited to only the iPhone 4S and will likely still remain limited to iOS over time, Zypr isn't limited to only one mobile operating system and can be used on smartphones, tablets, and other consumer electronic devices, including in-vehicle entertainment systems, smart TVs, and more. Siri a “competitive threat” says Google in antitrust downplay

Apple’s Siri voice control system is a “significant development” and a “competitive threat” Google chairman Eric Schmidt has admitted, though the concession to the iPhone 4S feature may be more a strategic one than true admiration. Schmidt made the comments during a Senate Judiciary Antitrust Subcommittee, questioned around Google’s competitiveness and whether it was so large as to be subject to antitrust measures; the former CEO also claimed that Google is not, in fact, dominant in search, praised Microsoft’s Bing, PCMag reports, and repeated denials that the company prioritizes its own products in search results.

Siri doesn’t hog data, averages 63KB per query

, Nov 2nd 2011 Discuss [2]

Siri was introduced with Apple's iOS 5 and iPhone 4S as a new intelligent assistant feature that performs certain tasks and retrieves information via natural voice commands. Since the service works by communicating with Apple's servers, the question has come up of just how much data does Siri consume and how that may affect folks on limited data plans. Well, tests have been done and thankfully Siri's on a lean diet. Read The Full Story

Siri iPhone 4 hack gets Apple server support

Apple disappointed many iPhone 4 owners with the news that Siri, the digital personal assistant technology, would only be available on the new iPhone 4S, and efforts quickly began to hack Siri onto the older smartphone. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith got the local app running with no problems, but faced Apple’s servers refusing to play ball with anything but the newest iPhone. Now, with the judicious application of some validation tokens from an iPhone 4S, it’s possible to get Siri on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch up and running, even without official support from Apple itself.

Google says Siri like Star Wars, Android more like Star Trek

, Oct 28th 2011 Discuss [45]

While the rest of the world was running around crashing its head into a wall in excitement over the just-revealed Galaxy Nexus and finalized Ice Cream Sandwich from Google, we had a sit-down with several Android authorities, one of whom, Matias Duarte to be exact, had a rather interesting take on the difference between voice controls in Android and Apple’s Siri. As you well know, one of the biggest features on the newest set of Apple mobile hardware and software is Siri, a voice-controlled assistant, where Android still totes several voice-activated features across the board. What we heard from Duarte in Hong Kong was that he’s thought long and hard about this situation and has come up with the nerdiest explanation of all.

Apple Siri Television “guaranteed product” says source

Apple’s television plans are a case of “when” not “if” the latest rumors insist, with Steve Jobs’ well-quoted “I finally cracked it” comment believed to be referring to Siri replacing the traditional remote control rather than the TV hardware and design itself. ”Steve thinks the [TV] industry is totally broken” a source told the NYTimes, one of several who apparently confirmed that Apple was experimenting with TV hardware and software. ”Absolutely, it is a guaranteed product for Apple” was the message, with execs supposedly knowing the true Apple TV was on the roadmap as far back as 2007.

Siri on iPad hack finds itself silent

, Oct 24th 2011 Discuss [10]

It appears that a hack for the iPad has brought the iPhone 4S exclusive Siri app to its own screen - though as those who've used Siri before know, it's not going anywhere without a connection to Apple's servers. The same has been true thus far with a hacked port of the Siri voice assistant app as it was added to the iPhone 4, developers finding that there's just something about the iPhone 4S that allows Siri to communicate with the online repository of Siri's intelligence, something holding back each other device that now wants in on the party.
