Vuzix has demonstrated its latest augmented reality (AR) glasses for the first time, the Vuzix STAR 1200 (See-Through Augmented Reality), intended to drive development of personal head-up displays. Shown to SlashGear at ShowStoppers during IFA 2011 today, the STAR headset is a development of the WRAP 920AR we tested all the way back at CES 2010; however, the STAR system uses a pair of transparent 852 x 480 displays that allow you to see the real world with computer graphics overlaid on top.

Those displays mimic a 16:9 aspect 60-inch display viewed from 10 feet away, but it’s the camera and sensors that make it particularly special. As well as tracking 6-degrees of freedom with the same plug-in motion sensor as offered for the Wrap 1200, the STAR set has a front-facing 1080p HD camcorder. The camera is removable, with a pair of screws underneath, allowing you to use the perhaps more discrete camera integrated into your smartphone instead.

Just like other Vuzix headsets, you can individually adjust each eyepiece to suit various levels of eyesight (or wear them over glasses, though it’s a clunky and heavy option and we felt like it might slide off at any moment) as well as adjust the nosepiece and tilt the eyepiece section inside the glasses frame. Audio output is supported too, while inputs include composite and component for hooking up to a PMP or DVI and VGA for your computer. USB is used for the AR software, and Vuzix says most apps – as long as they have the right connections – should work with the STAR.

Vuzix STAR 1200:

 />

Sadly we couldn’t actually test that, as Vuzix didn’t have anything set up to actually feed AR data into the STAR 1200. Right now there are apparently only two such headsets in the world, one at ShowStoppers and another in the US. Unfortunately, Vuzix is targeting the STAR 1200 headset at developers looking to push AR software and services, rather than the general public. That adds up to limited availability when it begins shipping in the next few months, and a $4,999 price tag. We may have to wait a little longer before AR gets integrated into our regular glasses, but hopefully the STAR 1200 will help pave the way.

During CES 2011, ShowStoppers is one area where companies come together, set up their booths, and start selling their latest and greatest gadgets and devices. OnLive was present at the show, setting up their MicroConsole for display, and showing off how the online gaming service works in real time.

The service itself was working great, even right on the ShowStoppers floor. We got to watch LEGO Harry Potter in action, while the company was showing off the gaming system itself, they were also demonstrating the SRS 5.1 Surround Sound System, which is still scheduled to release for the service in the near future. The company also confirmed that the 33% discount for the MicroConsole, which will still get purchasers a free game, is still going on, and will end on Sunday, January 9th, at 11:59PM CST.

The company was also showing off their embedded gaming within VIZIO HDTVs, which we’ve reported about in the past, along with their tablet device. The company pointed out that players of OnLive will be able to continue playing a game on any OnLive console, moving from one device to another.

There are several apps in the iOS App Store that will help users find something, even if they’re in knee-deep in a grocery store, or some other retail store. But for Aisle411, they’re taking a different approach. Instead of focusing on the map-side of things, or the GPS in its entirety, the company is focusing more on finding the item in the store, as well as making it fun to check-in with social gaming aspects.

Aisle411 has coupled with Coupons.com to make sure that when you check in at a store, you’ll be able to find the best deals for what you’re looking for, when you’re looking for it. With the app, users will be able to locate an item, right down to the specific aisle that it’s on. The app itself is powered by Nuance. You’ll also be able to manage shopping lists with the application, locate product reviews, and interact with friends thanks to the social media integration.

The app will work in more than 600 stores across the United States, as well as in Lowe’s. The app is available right now in the App Store, and it’s free. There’s an Android application in development, and Aisle411 will be launching an Android and BlackBerry app later in 2011.

The 10.1-inch model, the Next4, is a little ahead of the game versus its smaller brother, considering it’s launching with Android 2.2. The tablet features a capacitive touchscreen, and has 8GB of memory inside. The device also features built-in WiFi, and will come pre-loaded with Broders eBook. It features a 1GHz processor under the hood, and is scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2011 with a price tag of $350.

The smaller version, the Next6, is a 7-inch device, and will launch with Android 2.1. The screen is a capacitive touchscreen, and features 4GB of memory. It has built-in WiFi, and will also be loaded with Borders eBook Store. To sweeten the deal, the device will have 25 free eBooks on it. The Next6 will also launch in the first quarter, and eFun says it should hit the market for around $250.

Teens and distracted driving are the two biggest problems on the roads today. Technology company, inthinc Technology Solutions Inc, has a product ready for worried parents or business users looking to track employees. The tiwiFamily is built to make teen driving not only safer, but allow parents to keep tabs on their driving teens.

Once set up, the devices allow parents to set limitations in regards to location and speed. For example, a parent can set up where the teen’s school is on a map and will be texted once the teen arrives to school and again whenever the leave the designated zone. The device will also keep track of your current speed and compare it to the speed limit, if you’re over the limit will be notified via vocal warning.

Because the device sends text messages and communicates with the internet, a data plan is required for use. Data plans for the devices range $24.99 a month to $49.99 a month and will allow unlimited text message updates. The tiwiFamily retails for $299-$599 depending on the data plan selected and is available now.

Press Release:

LAS VEGAS (2011 International CES, Booth #2334) — JAN. 6, 2011 — inthinc Technology Solutions Inc. (www.inthinc.com), a company centered on telematics, fleet solutions and driving safety, today announced it is helping prevent distracted driving by implementing cell phone and texting restrictions in both its commercial and consumer driving safety systems. inthinc’s teen driving safety system, tiwiFamily, with new distracted driving prevention was named a CES Innovations 2011 Design and Engineering Award honoree.
For teen drivers, inthinc leverages technology that puts customers’ cell phones in a “safe mode,” restricting calls, texts or other apps while the vehicle is in motion. The technology will integrate with the inthinc customer portal where parents can monitor cell phone usage while a vehicle is in operation along with other driving behaviors such as speeding, aggressive driving and seatbelt usage.

For commercial fleets, inthinc integrates technology that combines vehicle telematics such as trip information, location (GPS), vehicle speed and so on with cell phone data including phone calls and text messaging so fleet managers can track whether any mobile phones are being used while driving. Companies can leverage this information to reward positive behavior and take corrective steps to reduce risky and dangerous behavior.
“According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving killed almost 5,500 people last year and injured another 500,000,” said Todd Follmer, CEO of inthinc Technology Solutions. “We, along with our technology partners, are working diligently to provide practical and effective solutions to help curb distracted driving.”
Distracted driving prevention will be available as an add-on to both consumer and commercial driving safety solutions in the first quarter of 2011. It will be available to both new and existing customers.

About inthinc’

Turns out that the Chumby 2, which was the name of the device a reportedly leaked image was being associated with, is actually called the Chumby 8. And it is indeed thinner, with a base that still promotes the usual USB ports needed to transfer data. Even with a thinner body, the Chumby 8 packs plenty of new features.

The new Chumby still acts as a device to interact with the Internet, and download data. As an Internet radio device, it’s able to access thousands of radio stations, as well as stations that deliver podcasts. The device also supports applications, along with the ability to share media. You’ll be able to upload images from your favorite sites, and save them onto an external memory card. There are also over 1,500 applications to choose from, including YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter.

The device features an eight-inch LCD touchscreen display, and an 800MHz Marvell ARMADA 166 processer inside. There’s 128MB DDR2 SDRAM, along with an internal 2GB microSD card for storage — which can be upgraded. There’s a headphone port, and a microphone port as well. You can check out our hands on photos of the device below.

We’re pleasantly surprised with the new Chumby device, especially with the slimmer profile, and the plenty of new features being thrown in.

Audio recognition programs have been around for a few years now allowing users to listen to a song and then have a program analyze it and push out the track information. Now this is possible with video. Ranging from recorded TV to movies, VideoSurf allows the user to determine exactly what’s playing just from five seconds of captured video.

How it works is that VideoSurf will display from the camera on your Android device and ask to be shown the source video for five seconds. After the video has been analyzed, which will be ultra fast over WiFi or Verizon’s LTE network, you will be presented with results including the TV show, episode, runtime, and and full cast list.

VideoSurf has an exclusive partnership with Verizon and the application will launch pre-installed on all the Verizon 4G LTE devices announced today such as the DROID BIONIC, HTC ThunderBolt, LG Revolution, and the Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone.

It is our goal to exceed the expectations of our consumers, on every purchase, with an award winning product,” noted Seth Burgett, CEO of Yurbuds and Ironman® triathlete.

The product was developed by a 23-time marathoner and an Ironman triathlete who were driven by their mission to transform the athletes’ experience. Its ability to remain exceptional during rigorous physical activity captured the attention of WTC, which led to a licensing agreement between the companies and the release of the Yurbuds Ironman Series Earphones. “The Yurbuds Ironman Series Earphones are the only earphone worthy of the Ironman name. We are proud to be partnering with the team at Yurbuds on a product that works so well,” said Bill Potts, VP of Marketing & Business Development at World Triathlon Corporation. The Company has attracted the endorsement of athletes including a top 10 triathlete of all time and the 2010 Ironman World Champion Chris ‘Macca’ McCormack. “I fell in love with Yurbuds immediately. There simply isn’t a better product out there! The comfort is amazing and the sound is spectacular. And they simply don’t move, it’s fantastic!”, said Macca.

These award-winning earphones were launched in Best Buy’s new Health and Fitness departments on Labor Day, 2010. By mid-November, the Yurbuds Ironman Series Earphones were featured in almost 600 of the top Best Buy stores. “The Yurbuds Ironman Series Earphones are one of the top selling items in Best Buy’s new Health and Fitness category, and have exceeded our expectations for 2010.” Said Sr. Buyer, Alan Smith of Best Buy.
About Yurbuds: The Company’s mission is to transform the athletes experience through personalized service and exceptional audio products that integrate ergonomics and emotive design. Burgett conceived his award-winning idea while training for a half-Ironman triathlon in 2007. He found that his earphones were uncomfortable and prone to falling out of his ears during training. Using his background in medical devices, he and his team have developed ergonomic products that provide athletes with the ability to be active for hours, focusing on their workout and not their equipment. Yurbuds can be found at Best Buy, Amazon.com, Yurbuds.com and premium retailers nationwide.
