For some reason, this Micro Orb spy camera makes me think of Columbo-star Peter Falk.  Perhaps if the TV detective had been fitted with a 1.5-inch sphere capturing 30fps MPEG-4 video (with sound), gathering evidence might’ve been even easier.  On sale in mid-May, the video camera has a three hour rechargeable battery and can record up to six hours of footage onto a 2GB microSD card.

Microsoft COFEE forensic data toolMicrosoft has revealed that, since June 2007, multiple law enforcement agencies have been using a forensic device it has developed that can bypass security on a Windows-powered machine and extract data for use in criminal investigations.  Called COFEE – Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor – the gadget is apparently a USB thumb-drive onto which Microsoft have loaded 150 ‘commands’ that can, among other things, decrypt passwords, display internet activity, and uncover all data stored on the computer.  Most importantly, it can do this on-site, rather than an investigator needing to remove a machine during a search or raid and send it to a lab for analysis.

Psystar has brought into the public light an issue that has long plagued the tech industry. Why does Apple keep their software closed to only Apple’s hardware? Several projects have sprouted, some even growing wings, that are efforts to bring OS X, and all its updates, to custom built X86 machines, including OSX86, and most recently Psystar. So, now you are likely wondering, why I think Apple should work as hard as they do to keep the supply of OS X-base computers to just Apple hardware.

Is it just me or does it seems like Toshiba is working hard to make it through the whole alphabet sometime soon? Regardless, Toshiba has 4 new lines of notebooks to add to the two new ones I told you about yesterday.

It’s not so much the hardware of this thumb drive that would interest prospective buyers, but more the software. Although the security provided by the integrated fingerprint reader is a dandy added bonus to all the software security you get.

The Defendius door chain maze

By Abby McVay on Wednesday, Apr 2nd 2008 No Comments

Defendius door chain mazeFor those that feel the need to make even the smallest tasks into a bit of a challenge this door chain is just the thing for you. For the rest of us, at least we can stare at it in utter disbelief that such a thing could ever exist.

One of these would be perfect if you have something to hide. While you’re unhooking the chain, you can have your buddy hide the evidence. Then when your disgruntled visitors finally get in, merely point to the lock and they’ll immediately understand. They’ll stare at your door chain in pure shock and forget all about their nagging suspicions.

olpc measureI thought for sure this guide was going to involve DIP switches when I read that this computer only has a 433MHz processor. But it didn’t, its all software, or more precisely, firmware based.

The requirements are quite low too, you must have an OLPC, you must have a developer key or have disabled security prior to this hack, and you must be perfectly OK with bricking your OLPC if you screw up. The upside is that there is at least one report of someone overclocking their OLPC to 566/233 without having any issues such as system instability or overheating.

It has 23 security updates, 550 hotfixes, and is packed into a 434.5MB package or 726.5MB for the 64-bit version. That’s a fat service pack if I do say so myself.

banner airportexpress 080317For $99 you can pick yourself up one of the worlds smallest mobile base stations for a wireless network. The best part is it now uses WiFi n to move all that data around wirelessly.

That does two things; first, it makes the unit compatible with all major 802.11 networks, and second it boosts the speed and extends the range. In fact it extends the range to twice what it previously was and ups the speed to 5 times what it was prior to the upgrade.
