Google’s “classic” Star Wars easter egg revealed

This morning the first big Google-made Star Wars easter egg was revealed, creating an "opening scrawl" of their search results. This is just the first of a collection of easter eggs that'll be revealed over the next few weeks, each of them likely deep within Google apps. To activate this particular hidden secret, you have only to type "a long time ago in a galaxy far far away." When you do, you'll find your search results turned to the classic Star Wars opening storyline in space.

This week a combination of releases from Google, Lucasfilm and Disney, and Verizon have lead us to clues about the next big Star Wars virtual reality release. As StarWars.com suggests, the release date for this VR adventure will be December 2nd, 2015. There you'll find what they're describing as "first-of-its-kind serialized Google Cardboard Virtual Reality (VR) experience." That's for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it's going to allow you to jump aboard our favorite starship. It's going to be epic.

This week Star Wars fans at Google have revealed their big project with Lucasfilm and Disney - a complete immersion of Google products in the Star Wars universe. What you're about to witness is a dip into a galaxy far, far away in a wide variety of apps, both mobile and desktop (in your web browser.) In the Star Wars app (now with Google Wear extension), Google Calendar, Chrome, Chromecast, Gmail, Inbox by Gmail, Maps, Google Search, Google Translate, Waze, and YouTube, you'll be able to choose the light side or the dark.

Six Star Wars films have been re-released in Blu-ray form in two editions, one of which is the Steelbook set we're reviewing today. These movies are available individually, each in their own heavy-duty metal and plastic container, each with a single Blu-ray inside. There's also a "Complete Saga" Blu-ray set that includes a whopping 9-disc collection, full of extra features and commentary tracks. You COULD also purchase the Blu-ray disks in two 3-disc sets, one original trilogy, one prequel trilogy.

A couple of bits of audio from Star Wars: The Force Awaken's most chrome-ified character Captain Phasma have been released. Straight through the greatest Star Wars toy ever made, BB-8 by Sphero, we're able to hear Gwendoline Christie's stormtrooper elite voice at last. According to an interview with Christie herself in recent weeks, Phasma will be a character as mysterious as Boba Fett was in the original film trilogy. Despite that - we'd still like to hear what she sounds like as soon as possible.

This morning Lucasfilm released a set of five posters depicting some of the main characters of the film Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This film will be released in December - not too long from now - and quite a bit of the plot and the details therein remain a secret. As such, we're not entirely surprised there's no Luke Skywalker poster. But we wanted one anyway, so we made one. We made a poster for Chewbacca as well, at Peter Mayhew's request.
