It looks like SiriusXM is ready to start providing its content in a way people will be more receptive to, today announcing the launch of SiriusXM On Demand. The company says that over 200 shows and 2,000 hours of content will be available from its network on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Better yet, the app will be available at no extra cost to existing SiriusXM subscribers, so if you happen to miss your favourite show while on the road, you can fire up the app and listen later without worrying about the costs.

Sirius also says it will be making older content available, including its exclusive shows, specials, and series, and new Featured Content will give users a broader access to the library available to them, including interviews and new shows, and users will naturally have access to Sirius’ most popular shows, including The Howard Stern Show, The Opie & Anthony Show, The Jamie Foxx Show, and Ask Martha.

“Vault” content will include various Town Halls with artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Usher, Coldplay, and Nirvana. Users will be able to store On Demand content for a limited time on their mobile devices too, so you could load up a few shows for offline listening when you’re next without an internet connection.

Notifications are also onboard, pushing new alerts when shows are updated or added. The only drawback is that commercials will still be added into the On Demand content, although Sirius says the interruptions will be “minimal” on select shows, while music programming will have no commercials at all. There’s no Android version of the app yet either, but the company says it’s coming in the near future.

There are a lot of carmakers that have struck partnerships with SiriusXM to give free service for a limited time to customers who buy a new car. But if you’re more in the market for a used car, such a perk has generally not been available to you. Until now, that is. Penske, one of the largest pre-owned car retail franchises, is giving three free months of SiriusXM service to used car buyers.

It’s unclear how much of the bill Penske is picking up and how much SiriusXM is chipping it, but it’s safe to assume that both are pushing some money into this deal to draw people into Penske locations and to gain new customers to the world of satellite radio. “Providing a 3-month SiriusXM subscription is a fantastic benefit to Penske’s customers and we look forward to working with its dealers to seamlessly deliver our critically-acclaimed audio entertainment at the touch of a button,” said SiriusXM sales president Rob Kurnick.

SiriusXM is one of those tech companies that sort of just remains in stasis. It’s at the point where it has no competition for satellite radio, and no time soon will drivers stop wanting to listen to the radio in their cars and trucks. So it just keeps chugging along. New talk programs are added regularly, with celebrities like Naomi Judd among the latest to get their own satellite radio shows.

Satellite radio is still around, and enjoyed by thousands. For Sirius XM, introducing new hardware isn’t something worth focusing on all that much, but that’s not stopping them from introducing a brand new piece of tech for all of those out there who may not have a vehicle featuring satellite radio pre-installed. The company labels it as a quick, easy, and simplistic method to get your ears focused on some satellite radio. All you need is an FM radio, cigarette adapter, and the new XM Snap! (which was recently seen at the FCC) and you’ll be good to go.

Unfortunately, the press release is pretty thin on the details. From what we can tell, all you need to do is plug the XM Snap! unit into your cigarette adapter, find a station on your FM radio that’s free to use (meaning, not already playing music and preferably not filled with static), and then adjust your XM Snap! to the right station. From there, you should be listening to your favorite satellite radio stations.

Of course, you’ll also need a Sirius XM subscription. The company says that the XM Snap! will drop into retail outlets beginning in October, and should have a retail price tag of about $59.99. Is this going to be the hot ticket on your holiday shopping list?

A new Sirius XM device, the XM Snap, has shown up at the FCC. According to the test report, the XM Snap is a digital satellite receiver for in-vehicle use, complete with “a transmitter operating in the 88 – 108 MHz FM band. The XM Snap supplies the incoming satellite digital audio signal to the vehicle’s radio via wired connection (Audio cable, FM Direct, or Cassette Adapter) or wireless FM transmission (Power Connect or FEA).”

So, we’re basically looking at a Sirius XM radio that can squirt out audio either via an aux-out connection or via an FM transmitter. No word on when it might launch, though Sirius XM has requested a 45 day confidentiality period on the user guide, test photos and the like, suggesting it’ll be here in less than two months.

Sirius XM have announced their first radio dock for Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch, the XM SkyDock taking advantage of OS 3.0′s third-party peripheral integration to add a satellite radio tuner to the handheld and have it controlled by the new companion app. The dock slots into a car’s power point, supporting the PMP with a flexible arm and custom cradle, and not only allows for listening to Sirius XM radio but for tagging tracks that you later want to buy on iTunes.

Both portrait and landscape screen orientations are supported, and there’s also a line-in port and a magnetic-mount antenna. Both first and second generation iPod touch models are supported, together with all three versions of iPhone – original, 3G and 3GS – as long as each is running iPhone OS 3.0.

The XM SkyDock will be available in fall 2009, priced at $119.99, while the accompanying software will be released at the same time through the App Store. You’ll obviously also need a subscription to Sirius XM radio.

According to customer services, it’s possible to lock your current rates by subscribing for a full three years. Of course, that could end up costing you more money in the long-run, as you’ll be tied to a significant contract. It’s unclear whether any of the Sirius XM channels will be altered, or if new content will be added to reflect the price increases.

Subscriptions for the Base, Best of, and A la Carte packages remain unchanged. This is likely to be in an attempt to pacify the FCC, who have been watching Sirius XM closely since the two companies merged.

All of you long time Sirius XM satellite radio subscribers may have something more to worry about starting in spring. According to “ken.muise” at the Digital Radio Central forums you may have more expensive fees as well as some changes to the service they provide by springtime.

The person who is starting this rumor claims to be an employee of the Sirius XM Activations Department, if anyone would know these new policy changes it would be the activation department. The first rumor outlines that each additional radio added will costs $8.99, which is a $2 increase from standard pricing today. The second string of bad news is that online streaming will now cost you $2.99 for most packages rather than being entirely free. This service can also range up to $8.99 a month for the Mostly Music and family Pack.

Luckily for current subscribers you can “lock in” the current price you are paying for service as well as the free online streaming. It appears that Sirius is also feeling the economic crunch on such a level that raising prices is the only way to save them from such a fate that we have been seeing all over.

XM’s upcoming portable digital satellite radio receiver, the XMp3, has turned up on Best Buy, complete with pricing and more details about the PMP’s functionality. Now confirmed as being made by Pioneer, the XMp3 will have access to up to 170 channels of XM satellite radio for $12.95 a month, together with MP3 and WMA playback. Most interesting, however, is the XMp3′s ability to record up to five different channels simultaneously.

Navigation is via a rotary dial and basic buttons, and memory is courtesy of a microSD card; the XMp3 can handle cards up to 8GB in size, which would be enough for up to 100 hours of audio. Both instant recording and scheduled recording is supported, as well as automatic recording of favorite channels.

A dock is provided, complete with remote control, meaning the XMp3 can be used as part of a home audio setup; the kit supplies a home antenna and cables. It measures in at 3-3/5 x 2 x 3/5-inches, and weighs 3.2oz, and will be priced at $279.99 when it becomes available in an estimated 1-2 weeks.

Chrysler has announced that its 2009 model-year cars will be have a wireless communication option called uconnect. Made up of Bluetooth hands-free, hard-drive based media, Sirius TV & Radio, GPS and, most interestingly, the ability to turn your car into a WiFi hotspot, uconnect will be available on most Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles starting in August.

The uconnect Web function uses a router with built-in WWAN modem, that allows multiple laptops and other devices to get online whether the car is stationary or moving. Chrysler’s carrier partner is Autonet Mobile, who charge $449 for the router (plus up to $50 installation), $35 for account activation and then $29 a month subscription. Connection speeds have not been revealed, but while Chrysler cautions against using the wireless while driving, there’s no actual safety measure to prevent it.

uconnect Phone uses integrated microphones to act as a handsfree kit for a Bluetooth-linked cellphone; new for 2009 is phonebook syncronization for up to 1,000 contacts, which can be browsed and dialled via voice command. Certain models will also allow iPod connectivity through the system. uconnect Tunes uses a 30GB hard-drive to store music, photos and video ripped from either USB stick or CD, while for navigation, meanwhile, uconnect GPS shows directions and real-time traffic information. It also responds to voice control of destination setting.

Finally, uconnect Studios offers SIRIUS Backseat TV and optional digital radio, with three TV channels and over 130 radio stations to choose from. Pricing for the other uconnect functionality is yet to be announced.

Press Release:

Chrysler LLC Launches Umbrella “uconnect” Name for Connectivity Technologies

Auburn Hills, Mich., Jun 26, 2008 -
Today’s consumers are passionate about staying in touch and want to be connected no matter where they are – home, work, school or vehicle. To focus on the experience and connect customers to the things that matter the most, Chrysler LLC will now bundle innovative consumer technologies under one umbrella name – “uconnect.” The function of the feature is directly in the name – uconnect phone, uconnect tunes, uconnect gps, uconnect studios and uconnect web.

“We set out to connect customers to the things that matter most to them,” said Deborah Meyer, Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer – Chrysler LLC. “The role for ‘uconnect’ in the 2009 model year places the focus on the customer experience and how the features will make their life easier.”

Following are the definitions of the uconnect features.

uconnect phone
What it does: Uses Bluetooth® technology to provide voice-controlled wireless communication between the occupants’ compatible mobile phones and the vehicle’s onboard receiver. New for 2009, the hands-free system automatically downloads up to 1,000 phone book entries from supported phones. The system also recognizes three languages, and is capable of learning. Voice commands can manage onboard phone book entries, select radio stations and access voice mail. Voice memos can be recorded using the microphone that’s integrated within the rearview mirror. Three memos of up to thirty seconds each can be stored in the system. The hands-free option promotes safety, freedom, value and flexibility.
Availability: Chrysler 300, Aspen, PT Cruiser, Sebring and Town & Country; Dodge Avenger, Grand Caravan, Caliber, Challenger, Charger, Dakota, Durango, Journey, Nitro, and Ram; Jeep® Grand Cherokee, Commander, Compass, Liberty and Patriot

Part of uconnect phone on select Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles is an iPod interface, which allows an iPod to be plugged into the vehicle’s sound system to play music through the vehicle’s speakers, charge/recharge the iPod when the ignition is on, display artists and music choices on the radio and pause play when uconnect phone receives a phone call. The iPod can be controlled through the radio controls and the remote steering wheel switches (if equipped). The system uses a Universal Customer Interface (UCI) connector located either in the glove box or in the center console, depending on vehicle model.

uconnect tunes
What it does: uconnect tunes includes the following features for music, movie and personalized picture display:
A 30-gigabyte hard drive for ripping up to 6,700 songs from CD or USB memory devices in compressed format (either MP3, AAC or WMA file formats)
Photos can be loaded onto the hard drive, allowing the customer to personalize the home screen
Movies can be displayed on the screen for entertaining passengers when the vehicle is in Park (as permitted by the state regulations)
Availability: Chrysler 300, Aspen, Sebring and Town & Country; Dodge Avenger, Caliber, Grand Caravan, Challenger, Charger, Journey, Nitro and Ram 1500; Jeep Commander, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Liberty and Patriot

uconnect gps
What it does: uconnect gps combines the features of uconnect phone and uconnect tunes with navigation and real-time traffic. The system includes an integrated voice recognition system and touch screen for easy operation. The voice recognition system also recognizes more than 100,000 words and can input addresses, which allows the customer to enter destinations while the vehicle is in motion.
Availability: Chrysler 300, Aspen, Sebring and Town & Country; Dodge Avenger, Caliber, Grand Caravan, Challenger, Charger, Journey, Nitro and Ram; Jeep Commander, Compass, Grand Cherokee, Liberty and Patriot

uconnect studios
What it does: uconnect studios offer optional SIRIUS Backseat TV™, featuring three channels of family TV programming, and optional SIRIUS Satellite Radio, with more than 130 channels of the best music, entertainment and information coast to coast. The systems can be bundled or opted for independently depending upon model availability, and either can be operated from the rear-seat entertainment unit or from the radio head unit.

Chrysler’s uconnect studios offer optional SIRIUS Satellite Radio which provides more than 130 channels, including 69 channels of 100 percent commercial-free music, plus sports, news, talk and entertainment. Station selection with the radio is easy, using the same familiar method as choosing an AM or FM station. Consumers are able to scan channels or have preset buttons for their favorite channels. They can also search both by music category and channel, which is displayed on the radio screen
Availability: SIRIUS Satellite Radio is available on all Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge vehicles

Chrysler’s uconnect studios offer optional SIRIUS Backseat TV which features three channels of family TV programming: Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network. SIRIUS Backseat TV operates via an in-vehicle satellite video receiver and two small roof-mounted antennas. Programming is displayed on the vehicle’s second- and/or third-row video screens, and channel name, program title and rating is broadcasted and displayed on the screen. In addition, when the vehicle is in Park, programming can be displayed on the uconnect tunes or uconnect gps screen for front-seat viewing (as permitted by state regulations). New for 2009 in the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan are larger nine-inch rear-seat video screens that swivel
Availability: Chrysler 300, Aspen and Town & Country; Dodge Grand Caravan, Charger, Durango, Journey and Ram 1500; Jeep Commander and Grand Cherokee

uconnect web
What it does: The system will provide high-speed data transfer and flexibility, combining WiFi and cellular connectivity for a new level of wireless technology. The system transforms the vehicle into a “hot spot” to deliver the Internet directly to the vehicle, for instant access to Web sites, e-mail, personalized music, online gaming, photo albums, and more.
Availability: Chrysler plans to offer aftermarket in-vehicle “hot-spot” wireless Internet capability through Mopar® for Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles.

Sony has fitted front mounted mini-jacks for plugging in other audio sources, and the GT920U is also compatible with iPods, HD and satellite radio (albeit with accessories required). MP3, non-DRM AAC and non-DRM WMA files are supported, both on CD or memory stick. Power output for both units rates at 52 watts x 4, with three additional pre-outs.

Personally they’re a bit too garish for my tastes – I like my stereo to look integrated with the rest of the dash, rather than resembling a button-encrusted barnacle clinging to it – but Sony do have a reputation for solid sound and build quality. Both include a credit-card style remote. The Xplod CDX-GT620U is available now, priced at around $160. Meanwhile the Xplod CDX-GT920U will be available in June, priced at around $250.

Pioneer have released a number of high-end in-car entertainment systems for their AVIC-F range. The three models – AVIC-F700BT, AVIC-F900BT and Premier branded AVIC-F90BT – all feature XM and satellite radio compatibility, Bluetooth with conversational voice recognition that can be used to control navigation, voice control of a connected iPod and a 5.8-inch WVGA touchscreen. The latter two models also have DVD playback and a built-in MSN Direct tuner.

The voice control is particularly clever. Rather than rely on preset commands which a user must memorise, the three ICE units can recognise natural speech; therefore, you could say “I want to listen to some Britney Spears” and, after briefly laughing at you, the AVIC-F will locate some among its playback options – CD, DVD, iPod, connected USB storage or SD card. The same technology is used for handsfree cellphone dialling, with the system giving verbal options for mobile, home or business numbers under the same contact.

Sound itself is handled via Pioneer’s Supertuner IIID AM/FM tuner, XM and SIRIUS Satellite Radio and HD Radio connectivity, three sets of RCA outputs and 50 Watts X 4 high power amplifier.

Of course, just as with the functionality, the pricing is high-end too. Pioneer’s MRSP for the AVIC-F700BT, AVIC-F900BT and AVIC-F90BT are $850, $1,100 and $1,200 respectively. They’re expected to launch in June 2008.

Press Release

Pioneer Advances Beyond Navigation with Launch of AVIC-F Series

New Pioneer Products Offer Consumers Enhanced Navigation and Entertainment Features Paired with Sophisticated Voice Control

SAN DIEGO –(Business Wire)– Apr. 19, 2008 Pioneer’s commitment to providing consumers with the ultimate in-car entertainment experience has led to three new product offerings that go beyond the typical navigation system. The Pioneer AVIC-F700BT, AVIC-F900BT and Premier branded AVIC-F90BT combine a multitude of functional entertainment capabilities with advanced navigation features that fit the lifestyle of today’s on-the-go consumers. The on-dash AVIC-F500BT, recently unveiled at the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show, joins the same elite family of in-dash AVIC-F series navigation systems.

Each of the highly sophisticated in-dash navigation systems enable users to link and control their personal devices. Apple iPod(R) connectivity, Bluetooth(R), MSN(R) Direct, HD(R) radio, XM(R) and SIRIUS(R) Satellite Radio, single CD, DVD video playback and compressed audio and video playback through USB and SD memory devices are among the players’ numerous capabilities. Additionally, each unit offers an advanced conversational voice recognition system for hands-free dialing of compatible Bluetooth enabled cell phones and control of an entire music collection on iPod players.

“Pioneer’s AVIC-F series navigation systems are the ideal solution for millions of drivers who want an in-car product that can be easily integrated with other mobile personal devices, whether it is an iPod or Bluetooth enabled cell phone,” said Larry Rougas, vice president of marketing and product planning for the mobile business group at Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “These offerings create a higher level in-car experience with navigation, entertainment and voice recognition capabilities – beyond what anyone will find on almost all current standard navigation systems in the market.”

Beyond Voice Control

A focal feature of all three systems is the highly sophisticated voice recognition feature collaborated with VoiceBox Technologies, allowing users to control connected iPod players and compatible Bluetooth enabled cell phones by voice. In addition, the systems differentiate from others on the market with features including conversational commands and intent recognition.

The navigation systems analyze every day conversational commands to initiate music playback and phone calling functions. Users can simply say, “Let’s hear artist Usher” or “I want to listen to artist Chris Brown,” to play back songs from specified artists in their iPods. Users can request music using the artist name, album name, playlist name and music genre.

The AVIC-F Series systems also allow conversational elements from the user’s speech such as stumbles and pauses without failing the command. For example, when the user says, “I want to, ah, play artist, um, Black Eyed Peas,” the system distinguishes the command phrase from the extra unwanted words to perform the desired function.

In the hands-free phone mode with a compatible Bluetooth enabled cell phone, the system utilizes intent recognition. From a command such as, “Call Robert Smith,” the AVIC-F systems can identify the contact without specifying the category it is stored in the phone. These units will prompt users with additional information by responding, “I have three numbers for Robert Smith – home, mobile and office. Which would you like to call?” The user can then provide the additional information without restating the command.

Beyond Entertainment

The AVIC-F navigation systems simultaneously operate as high-end audio and video entertainment sources. Each unit feature a 5.8-inch high resolution WVGA touch panel display which users can easily access various forms of entertainment. The AVIC-F700BT starts with a single CD/CD-R/RW playback mechanism while the AVIC-F900BT and AVIC-F90BT are further equipped with CD/CD-R/RW/DVD/DVD-R/RW video playback, capable of reading MP3, WMA, iTunes AAC, Wave, DivX(1) and MPEG4(1) files.

Each unit also includes a USB interface for quick connection to iPod music players, portable media players and USB memory device. For extra convenience, SD memory filled with additional Points of Interest information or compressed audio and video, slides directly into the SD card slot located in front of each unit. When any external device is plugged in, the systems will instantly recognize the source allowing users access and control through the touch panel display and/or voice control (iPod only). Pioneer also added a mini-jack A/V input on the face of each unit for immediate connection to other portable devices, such as camcorders and video players.

As high-end source units, each system is equipped with its Pioneer’s unprecedented Supertuner IIID AM/FM tuner, XM and SIRIUS Satellite Radio and HD Radio connectivity, three sets of RCA outputs and 50 Watts X 4 high power amplifier.

Beyond Navigation

Each system utilizes flash memory to obtain quicker mapping information and allow an “always on” navigation state. The comprehensive map database from Tele Atlas(R) covers the entire United States, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii enabling users to route to millions of destinations. The database includes more than 12-million points of interest (POI), for destinations such as gas stations, ATMs, hotels and restaurants which can be easily searched either near a current location, or close to a specified destination. Categories of POIs can be overlaid onto the map for quick identification further enhancing the navigation experience. On the AVIC-F900BT and AVIC-F90BT model, specific landmarks are illustrated using 3-dimentional icons.

As an added benefit, each system employs a Text-to-Speech (TTS) function to further improve its assistance capabilities. Unlike some navigation systems, the AVIC-F models will announce street names in addition to turning instructions ensuring users are warned ahead of time. Drivers will hear, “turn right on Broadway,” instead of simply prompting, “Turn right ahead.”

The AVIC-F900BT and AVIC-F90BT products also feature MSN(R) Direct connectivity. With a paid MSN subscription(2), users will receive updated traffic, weather forecasts, gas prices and movie time information for more than 100 cities across the United States and Canada. At a glance, traffic incidents and traffic flow are displayed directly on the map indicated by different colored lines and traffic icons. The navigation systems automatically integrates with the MSN Direct data allowing users to route to gas stations and movie theaters of choice with a simple touch of the screen.

As an added benefit of the integrated SD card slot, Pioneer’s systems are ready for updates and additional POI information. Using a PC application from Pioneer, users with compatible PCs can create and store new points of interests onto an SD memory card for the navigation system to reference. This is especially helpful when users want to add their personalized POIs.

Beyond Integration

The Pioneer AVIC-F navigation systems can be fully integrated into nearly any car with a double DIN dash opening. With up to 32,768 customizable illumination colors, users can establish a refined factory OEM look and feel.

For safety and convenience, each unit is equipped with a camera input and back-up trigger. These systems will automatically display images from a separately purchased camera when the vehicle is shifted into reverse. The feature is extremely useful in large automobiles where it can be difficult to see behind the vehicle.

The Pioneer AVIC-F700BT, AVIC-F900BT and Premier AVIC-F90BT will be available in June 2008 for a suggested price of $850, $1,100 and $1,200 respectively.

Pioneer’s Mobile Entertainment Division is known for offering the kind of in-car products that make driving more enjoyable by offering high quality audio and video, advanced connectivity and ease-of-use. Its focus is on the development of new digital technologies including audio video, navigation and satellite radio, while maintaining its strong heritage in products for car audio enthusiasts and sound competitors. The company markets its products under the Pioneer and Premier brand names. When purchased from an authorized dealer, consumers receive a limited warranty for one year with Pioneer products and two years for Premier electronic products.

Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. is headquartered in Long Beach, Calif., and its U.S. Web address is http://www.pioneerelectronics.com. Its parent company, Pioneer Corporation, is a leader in optical disc technology and a preeminent manufacturer of high-performance audio, video and computer equipment for the home, car and business markets. The company focuses on four core business domains including Blu-ray Disc and DVD, display technologies, navigation and Digital Network Entertainment(TM).

(1) DivX and MPEG4 playback not available through USB and SD card slot.

(2) MSN Direct is a subscription service that delivers traffic conditions, fuel prices, weather data, and more to personal navigation devices to over 100 cities in the United States and Canada. After the initial trial subscription included with the AVIC-900BT and AVIC-F90BT, an optional subscription service fee is required for MSN Direct services. -0-

The merger of the only two satellite radio companies has been approved by the Justice Department who determines whether or not it would negatively affect consumers or not. The only hurdle left is the FCC.

After the Justice Department decision the FCC has been getting a lot of pressure from the parties that are interested in seeing this merger fail as the FCC is the last stop for the merger before Sirius is allowed to buy XM for the estimated 4.59 billion dollars. The NAB has to be the biggest opposition to the merger with it backing the interests of just about every AM/FM station there is.

The concern is that the merger would drive costs of hardware so far down, and programming so far down that there wouldn’t be much of a reason to listen to the commercial-ridden mediocrity that is broadcast radio anymore. Of course that’s not how the NAB states it, but the honest truth of it is that if the AM/FM stations were offering up even remotely competitive content there’d be little to no reason to pay a monthly amount just for commercial free radio, but they aren’t and satellite radio is simply amazing. So, I personally hope this merger goes through and things are looking up for the two companies.

Bowers & Wilkins, known most recently for their amazing Zeppelin radio, are manufacturers of some truly amazing audio solutions. As such, it’s not much of a surprise that they were chosen to add their aural blessing to the upcoming 2009 Jaguar XKR.

They’ve managed to pack in 14 speakers in the coupe, all of them using only the top quality components such as Kevlar for the Mids and aluminum for the Highs. Then they went through a rigorous process of calibrating the system for the best audio quality throughout the car, regardless of where you are sitting or what you are listening to.

The audio in this car would be more on par with most people’s high-end home audio solutions offering up Dolby Pro Logic II through a 7.1 channel surround sound system. Known audio sources in the car include FM and Satellite radios as well as CDs, but there is also mention of some unrevealed audio sources for the vehicle.

You are going to have to be pretty addicted to football to buy one of these though. First the display is really bland, it manages to relay all the pertinent information, but its pretty boring.

Then you have to wait 15 minutes for an update, that just makes it worse. But at least there is no subscription fee, that’s right, no hidden charges, just a $100 up front for the device and you are square.

So normally a decrease in size isn’t enough to warrant and entirely new product, so what features came with the diet? Enhanced WiFi is the first, then there is a new microSD card slot and better library management.

Possibly the best part is the ability to tag a track and then purchase it later. There is a “love” button that lets you tag certain tracks that you love for later listening when they are on again. You can also schedule and capture up to 100 hours of music or talk. The Stiletto 2 will be paired with a pair of Altec Lansing (I personally love anything they make) antenna headphones with 30mm drivers.

Which is always good right? Apparently the deal is $6.95 per month for the first 50 channels of your choosing from one provider. From there it goes up to $14.95, but you get to choose up to 100 channels from either provider.

It is also looking like current receivers from either provider will be offering up both their initial provider’s channels and a few from the other company. So, for example, Sirius receivers should be able to play a few of XM’s channels after the merger. But receivers released after the merger should be able to play the full line from both providers.

I know the National Association of Broadcasters has been shedding a negative light on the whole matter, saying it’s bad for the consumer. But I think these concerns were echoed in the FCC meetings and has been the cause for plans for such a reasonable deal. Is $6.95 plus the initial hardware cost worth never having to hear a commercial on the radio again? I think so.

Subscription radio is not something that’s taken off over here in the UK, but if you’re in the US then there’s plenty of choice if you don’t like free-to-air FM or tire easily of what’s on your PMP. The Gadgeteer’s Rob Tillotson has been trying out a chunky little XM receiver made by Pioneer, the inno, and has found that if you’re looking for a compromise between rocking your own tunes and sampling a bit of the mobile XM life then the portable device might be for you.

Aside from XM – reception of which is reasonable in areas of semi-decent strength – there’s 1GB of internal memory that can be used to store your own music. Alternatively, you can record from XM straight to this storage, although DRM means you’re unable to copy those recordings onto your PC. Battery life looks, to my uneducated eyes, disappointing, with the inno managing just 4-5hrs of live satellite radio reception before dying. Still, the generous bundle comes with a full home docking kit (complete with a remote that’s as big as the radio itself) so it’s easy to recharge.

XM’s repeater technology means that even if you’re not in plain satellite view you still might catch a signal, although some commenters – while singing the praises of the inno – complain of poor reception in so-called “urban canyons” when driving to work. Other annoyances include the lack of Mac support and proprietary power connection (despite there also being a miniUSB port on the device).

Make sure to check out Rob’s review for full details.

Recently seen in adverts but subsequently yanked, the Delphi SkyFi3 is a pretty little slice of satellite radio playing goodness, 65% smaller than previous SkyFi models and boasting 30 minutes of live radio rewinding, built-in storage for up to 10 hours of XM content and a Micro SD slot for storing mp3/WMA/WAV files. Sadly the battery lasts just eight hours, meaning you won’t even have time to play back all that stored content, never mind get started on your mp3 collection!

There’s a bundled car dock, capable of holding the SkyFi3 either horizontally or vertically, with aux-in for routing external audio through your car stereo. Two versions of headphone-cum-aerial sets are available – the standard (which if you shop around you might find as a freebie with the SkyFi3 itself) that relies on the unit’s internal battery to give 90 minutes of XM Radio, or the premium which has a rechargeable battery pack and boosts listening time to 7 hours in XM Radio mode and 40 hours of stored content.

In-built stock ticker, favourite-artist search and recording scheduler round out the package. Available from December 1st at a MRSP of $229.
