guillotineIt’s not a good day for a career in the tech industry, as multiple job cuts and proposed cuts are reported, including some from big names like Google.  According to the search giant’s own blog, positions in both recruiting and engineering are at risk, with the former seeing 100 jobs cut outright, while the latter involves the closure (and potential for relocation) of offices in Austin, Texas; Trondheim, Norway; and Lulea, Sweden.  Google are hoping that the 70 engineers involved will be able to relocate rather than leave the company. 

Meanwhile, Motorola have scythed 4,000 jobs, three-quarters of which are from the company’s handset division, for a total of 6-percent of their global operations.  It’s part of an attempt to staunch the company’s gushing cash reserves; the Q4 estimates suggest a 7 to 8 cent per share loss.  Overall, Motorola has now shed 7,000 staff.

thumb panasonic sanyo logosPanasonic’s controlling-stake acquisition of Sanyo has been confirmed, in a deal that will see the company pay $6.4bn to stakeholders.  The deal, which was confirmed back in November but delayed after 29-percent Sanyo stakeholder Goldman Sachs refused Panasonic’s earlier offers, will see the combined company take the number two spot in the league of Japanese electronics manufacturers, with Hitachi maintaining first place.

Built on the same technology as the World brightest 70 series Dual Lamp projector, Sanyo has rolled out another industrial grade projector at Japan Today. Like the LP-XF70, the new LP-XTC50 is a standard 4:3, conventional 3xLCD panel projector with a native resolution of 1024×768. The beam is capable of 5000 lumen brightness drawing from its dual 330W NSHA lamps with a full on/off contrast of 1100:1.

panasonic sanyo logosPanasonic’s takeover of Sanyo could be days away from a full announcement, according to the latest rumors from sources close to the deal.  While Panasonic would only say that no official statement of the takeover bid had been made, three sources speaking on condition of anonymity have claimed that Panasonic President Fumio Ohtsubo and Sanyo President Seiichiro Sano met last month and agreed, in principle, to the deal.

Another day, another set of tiny desktop LCDs that most of us can’t buy.  Akihabara have been playing with Sanyo’s ALBO Home Network Viewer, a 7-inch 800 x 480 LCD with integrated WiFi b/g, memory card slots and infrared receiver.  It also automatically flips from portrait to landscape when you physically rotate the display.
