The i5700 has a 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen, 3.2-megapixel camera, GPS, HSDPA, WiFi and Bluetooth, together with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top of Android OS 1.5. Onboard storage is just 200MB, with a microSD slot for up to 32GB cards, and there’s a 3.5mm headphones jack and accelerometer.

Still, to make up for the disappointment there are a few shots to show the latest design of the Galaxy Lite, and as you can see the vivid – but, we felt, fun – lime green back cover has been replaced with some more sober versions. The handset will be available in white with green highlights and black with orange highlights.

Android phones are coming out all over the place, ranging from the basic Android device, all the way up to HTC’s Sense UI, which made us all take a second look at what Android was capable of. And we’re happy to see the open source Operating System (OS) getting some of the lime-light, especially so quickly. And while HTC has beem the main proponent to Android’s availability on the market, other manufacturers are quickly clamoring to get their piece of the pie. Motorola has two handsets reportedly coming out, the Verizon-bound Sholes (or Shules, whichever you think doesn’t sound ridiculous when you say it aloud), and the T-Mobile Morrison, which is a lower-end device. And Samsung had already inroduced the i7500 (or Galaxy), but it looks like they’re not finished yet. Here, we finally introduce the Samsung Instinct Q.

The guys over at Phandroid got a lucky tipster to send them four pictures of the upcoming Samsung Instinct Q, which is part of the Instinct line-up formerly exclusive to the Sprint network. However, there are some major changes this time around. First and foremost, is the fact that Android is running on the device. Secondly, it’s the only Instinct-branded phone to have a physical, slide-out keyboard. But, everything else is pretty standard on the device. The hardware keys, which are essential to an Android device, are present below the screen, which seems to be decently sized.

However, the more we look at this phone, the more we can’t help but think it’s a bit run-of-the-mill. Even the Samsung Galaxy stood out in its unique physical “blandness.” But the Instinct Q looks like a bad mix between the older Samsung Instinct devices, and the new Highlight, which came out for T-Mobile not too long ago. And there’s that large white bumper-like thing at the top of the phone, which hpoefully just goes to the wayside by the time this phone launches. In the end, the big news here is that Sprint is possibly getting two Android devices at the same time, around October 11: the HTC Hero, and Samsung’s Instinct Q. So, all you Android fans stuck to Sprint pining for a handset, now you have some choice. But we’re pretty sure that this is one decision that isn’t too hard to make.

Your eyes do not deceive you: it’s another hand and another live shot of the Samsung Galaxy I7500, also known as the next big Android cellphone to hit the market. This time around it’s phoneArena doing the gripping honors, having scored a pre-release handset, and as with most of the other hands-on reports we’ve seen it’s the 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen that really wows.

Video demo of the Samsung Galaxy after the cut

The Galaxy runs Android OS 1.5 Cupcake, so their experience with the software is little different to our own review of the HTC Magic. What really differentiates those two keyboard-free devices is the Samsung’s 5-megapixel camera; there’s good news and bad, as the higher pixel count does add up to a clearer photo than from the Magic (you can see sample Magic shots here) but the Galaxy lacks any of the high-end tweakability Samsung have been loading onto their other cameraphones.

In the end, phoneArena worry that the AMOLED display and better camera might not be enough to differentiate between the Samsung Galaxy and the HTC Magic, especially since the latter will have had a couple of months on the market by the time the Galaxy launches in Europe come June. Our own feeling is that with the number of Android devices being so low, buyers are less concerned with extreme differences between handsets, and that the Samsung will see plenty of buyers.

HTC likely thought there was little that could shadow their Magic launch during the first half of the year, but they didn’t count on the Samsung I7500. Packing a similarly-slimline QWERTY-free chassis and raising the stakes with an AMOLED touchscreen and higher resolution camera, the I7500 has already swayed quite a few people away from the Magic over at Android Community. Now, thanks to CNET Asia, we’ve the first sighting of both smartphones up close with each other.

Full Samsung I7500 vs. HTC Magic gallery after the cut

As the images show, both handsets are roughly the same size, with the biggest difference being in controls. HTC have a trackball and dedicated search button, while Samsung use a more traditional D-pad and drop the search key; instead, they make up for things with a proper 3.5mm headphone jack, while the Magic requires an adapter.

Around the back, the I7500 comfortably bests the Magic with its 5-megapixel autofocus camera and “power LED flash”, versus the HTC’s flashless 3.2-megapixel snapper. Our own hands-on experience with the Magic does confirm that it’s a sturdy, well-made smartphone, though; we’ll have to wait to play with the Samsung to see whether the I7500 can boast the same.

A second video demo of the Samsung I7500 Android smartphone has emerged, this time the handiwork of Tech65. As we saw in the first video, it’s the AMOLED touchscreen that really makes the I7500 stand out: at 3.2-inches and 320 x 480 resolution it’s the same size and pixel count as on the HTC Magic and T-Mobile G1, but we’re hoping for better overall runtime along with the brighter colors.

Video demo of the Samsung I7500 after the cut

There’s also quadband GSM, triband 7.2Mbps HSDPA (900/1700/2100), WiFi b/g and GPS, as well as Bluetooth and a 5-megapixel camera. Internal memory tops out at 8GB, with a microSD card slot for adding up to an extra 32GB. We’re also pleased to see a standard 3.5mm headphone socket, something HTC could well look at copying with their own Android phones.

We’re still unclear about release dates for the Samsung I7500, but the device in this video is looking pretty complete. The Android platform desperately needs more choice in handsets, so we’re eagerly waiting the I7500′s launch.

T-Mobile USA’s roadmap for Android devices has leaked, suggesting that the HTC Magic – aka T-Mobile myTouch 3G - will hit the market over the summer, priced at $179, and be followed in the fall by two new handsets. Firstly, for QWERTY lovers, the G1 v2 “Bigfoot”, and also the Samsung Houdini.

According to the roadmap, the T-Mobile G1 will remain on sale until the end of the “back to school” period, which the carrier defines as September 8th. After that, it will be replaced by another hardware-QWERTY device, the hitherto-unknown G1 v.2; the picture, which is likely more a representative mockup than a true likeness, suggests a Helio Ocean 2 styled slider, with distinctly rounded ends.

At the same time, T-Mobile USA will launch the Samsung Houdini. It’s unclear whether this is the same device as the Samsung I7500; again, the roadmap could well have been prepared before official pictures of the AMOLED-touchscreen I7500 were available. Prices for the latter two devices have been blanked out, unfortunately.

It’s been another week dominated by cellphones here at SlashGear, with our exclusive review of the HTC Touch Diamond2 plus plenty of news from the rival Android smartphone camp. The HTC Magic launched on Vodafone Spain, but we were more interested in the Samsung I7500, a super-skinny slice of 5-megapixel Android loveliness. Check out the live demo video here.

Meanwhile, Motorola’s Calgary was tipped to be the company’s first Android device – and Verizon Wireless’ first, to boot – which made up for the manufacturer canning two other upcoming handsets. Samsung’s Omnia HD i8910 was reviewed, and managed to whet our appetite for the rumored Omnia Pro complete with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. If that wasn’t enough, leaks from the Palm camp tipped the upcoming Eos, a candybar-format replacement to the aging Centro. Remember, you can keep up with all the latest Android and Palm news at Android Community and My Pre, respectively.

Apple have made their usual rumor round this week, with word that the company have been negotiating with Verizon for an exclusive cellphone. Hot speculation tips it as an LTE iPhone, though there’s also talk of an “iPhone Lite” and a UMPC-rivaling Apple Media Pad. Just to keep us on the very edges of our seats, a fan mockup of the latter managed to make us forget the name and manufacturer of every Windows UMPC on the market from the past two years.

Acer’s Aspire One nettop hit review benches, and proved a mixed bag. The NVIDIA Ion 1080p-capable GPU is every bit as impressive as we were warned to expect, but it’s let down by the single-core Intel Atom CPU they’ve paired it up with. Not everyone is disappointed with Atom, however: this stunning Filofax MID concept is based on the low-power Intel chip, while ASRock and Pegatron have both based NVIDIA Ion nettops on the processor.

Meanwhile Acer’s Aspire One 751 11.6-inch netbook launched officially, finally including a full spec list, and Microsoft released Windows 7 RC to MSDN subscribers; the general public can expect the OS RC on May 5th, while Acer tip the full release as happening on October 23rd. While you’re waiting for that, you can read our review of the AAXA P1 pico-projector; can you see it fitting into your life? Our A/V expert Daniel Lim wasn’t sure.

The same team that shot the Samsung I7500 demo video yesterday have followed up with a photo set of the Android smartphone’s controls, ports and connectivity. One shot – of the I7500 with its battery compartment cover removed – shows the GSM SIM slot and microSD card slot, both of which appear to require the battery’s removal before they’re changed.

That’s nothing new for SIM cards, certainly, but it could prove an annoyance for frequent microSD swappers. While we’re assuming hooking up the I7500 via its microUSB port (hidden under the top flap) will cause it to mount as a removable drive, giving access to both the internal 8GB storage and any memory card present, many users prefer to use an external card reader.

Announced on Monday, the Samsung I7500 has a 3.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen, GPS, WiFi b/g and HSPA (in triband, T-Mobile USA friendly format). There’s also Bluetooth 2.0 and the usual Google apps suite. More details on specifications here; the I7500 is expected to arrive in Europe from June 2009.

While the I7500 shows off all its external ports and controls – including that all-important 3.5mm headphone jack on the top panel, next to a discretely covered microUSB port – it’s the touchscreen display that really catches your attention. As on other recent Samsung handsets, such as the Tocco S8300 Ultra, it’s richly saturated and vividly bright, and makes LCD panels look drab by comparison.

The Samsung I7500 has UMTS HSPA, WiFi b/g and Bluetooth 2.0, together with GPS and 8GB of internal storage. There’s also a microSD slot, content with up to 32GB cards, and the usual suite of Google applications. More details here.

Press Release:

O2 exclusively launches: the first Android mobile phone with Google Services from Samsung

 Samsung I7500 with 5 megapixel camera and brilliant touch display
 Simple and intuitive use
 Access to Google Mail, Google Maps and the Android market by one
click

MUNICH. Telefónica O2 Germany strongly expands its mobile phone product
range for the mobile internet. The first Android lifestyle mobile phone with
Google Services from Samsung kicks off the new offer. The Samsung I7500 is
the first Android mobile phone provided by a leading brand manufacturer and
will be exclusively available from O2 as of June 2009. In addition to the form
factor and design with mere 11.9 mm thickness, it primarily stands out by its
simple and intuitive use. The mobile internet offers a great experience for
beginners and professional users alike. The Samsung I7500 combines an
expandable Android platform with first-class equipment: a brilliant touch
screen display, and a 5 megapixel camera with LED Flash and GPS.
“The Samsung I7500 offers our customers the best internet experience based on the
Android platform provided by Google“, says Lutz Schüler, Managing Director
Marketing and Sales for Telefónica O2 Germany. “The Samsung I7500 kicks off a
series of exciting devices for the mobile web which we will launch in the next couple
of months. There is something for everyone: from beginners to heavy users. And, we
put our focus on strong brands, simple use and design.”
Classic applications from the PC world can be comfortably accessed by one click on
the big touch screen when users are on the move. Thanks to the open platform of the
Google operating system, users are able to optimally customize the device to their
own requirements. A variety of applications and services is available in the Android
market. The contact to friends is guaranteed by integrated and freely available Web
2.0 applications like Facebook, Flickr and Instant Messaging. Customers are always
up to date anywhere they go due to the automatic synchronization of emails, contacts
and appointments of Google accounts. All other popular email accounts can also be
accessed.
The integrated GPS receiver enables the comprehensive use of Google Maps: local
positioning, detailed route description and simple navigation. The application
Wikitude available in the Android market allows customers to access details of
unknown sights via photos on the web. The combination of a camera, GPS and an
internet browser turns into a personal and interactive guide.
As the first Android mobile phone, the Samsung I7500 offers a 5 megapixel camera
with LED Flash. The big 3.2“ AMOLED display ensures the brilliant representation of
photos and videos and reduces the battery power due to the energy-saving
technology. The battery has generous dimensions (1500 mAh) and ensures that
users enjoy long calls and access to the web. The device also includes WLAN
(802.11 b/g) and Bluetooth 2.0. Supporting various multimedia codec formats the
I7500 is a multimedia all-rounder. With ist memory capacity of up to 40 GB it offers
enough space for pictures, music and videos.
The Samsung I7500 will be exclusively available in all O2 Shops, the specialized
trade or on the internet from June 2009. The device can be combined with all tariffs
and data packages.
