Back in Feburary,Samsung announced that it had sold 20 million Galaxy S II devices across the world, and in March the company declared that it had shifted 5 million Galaxy Notes. Samsung has now released some updated sales figures, saying that 50 million Galaxy S and Galaxy S II units have been sold thanks to combined channel and distributor sales.

Not only that, but the Galaxy Note continues to see strong sales, up from 5 million units in March to 7 million today. In total, 24 million Galaxy S phones have entered sales channels since the June 2010 launch, while 28 million Galaxy S IIs have been shifted in just a year.

The latest figures join news that the Galaxy S III is the fastest pre-ordered smartphone in the UK, with the phone already amassing 9 million pre-orders from retailers and carriers worldwide. The phone has suffered some delays, however: the Pebble Blue version of the device is said to have a manufacturing defect with the back cover of the phone, leading to a milky white appearance after prolonged use. Samsung has said it’s trying to fix the problem and Pebble Blue phones should be hitting retailers shortly, but if you want to pick up a phone today you’ll have to make do with Marble White.

Samsung might be taking a page out of the Apple playbook and preparing to launch a smartphone that falls in between the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy S III. What will potentially be called the “Galaxy S II Plus” has appeared in a benchmark database, An3DBenchXL. This could be the reason why the manufacturer revealed it would not be displaying the SIII at this month’s Mobile World Congress.

The benchmark data show the Galaxy S 2+ with Android 2.3.4 installed, a WVGA display and a 1.5 GHz processor. This would place it ahead of the Galaxy S II’s 1.2 GHz CPU. This naming convention is becoming increasingly commonplace. Samsung did it with the last generation of Galaxy S phones, and who can forget the iPhone 3GS and the iPhone 4S? After all, there are only so many numbers you can climb before it just looks ridiculous, and if you churn them out on an annual basis those numbers run up quickly.

As for Mobile World Congress, even though the S3 will be a no-show, we do know that a refreshed Galaxy Tab tablet will be on display as well as other “exciting new mobile products.” The S3 has been confirmed to be revealed some time before the end of June, at an exclusive Samsung event. Stay tuned.

T-Mobile’s version of the much anticipated Samsung Galaxy S II was revealed at the big US debut back on August 30 along with variations for AT&T and the Now Network. However, T-Mobile has yet to confirm a launch date for its version nor reveal the processor. But now, it appears that the Samsung Galaxy S Support team may have let that last bit slip via Twitter.

According to a Tweet in response to a customer question, the Samsung support team revealed that the T-Mobile Galaxy S II will be sporting a blazing fast 1.5GHz Qualcomm APQ8060 dual-core processor. That’s expected to be faster than Samsung’s 1.2GHz Exynos processor, which has been confirmed for the Galaxy S II set to launch on the other two carriers.

Rumors have been pointing to the Qualcomm processor ever since speculation began that the device would be called the Hercules and would support T-Mobile’s 42Mbps network. This is the first time that a rep from either company has confirmed the APQ8060, which is the latest generation dual-core processor from Qualcomm.
The much anticipated Samsung Galaxy S II made its US debut on August 30 and is expected to arrive on the nation’s third largest carrier on September 16. It will be the first of the three US version to launch. The other two will be from T-Mobile and AT&T, each with slight differences in hardware, mainly in the exterior look and screen size.

As the WiMAX-toting Epic 4G Touch, the device will feature a larger 4.52-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and a slightly more rounded chassis. Inside, all the powerful specs are about the same with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 16GB onboard storage. It also has a 2-megapixel front-facing camera and 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with auto-focus, LED flash, and 1080p HD video capture.

The device will have Samsung’s Touch Wiz UI running on top of Android 2.3 Gingerbread and can function as a 3G/4G mobile hotspot for up to eight devices.

Samsung’s much anticipated Galaxy S II smartphone is about to get its official US debut later this evening. It’s set to launch on three of the four major US carriers with the device to vary slightly for each. One of these variants is a WiMAX version called the Samsung Epic 4G Touch, which has apparently outed itself a bit early.

A product slide showing the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch turned up on Samsung’s Mobile Product site, essentially confirming the device ahead of schedule. We’ve already seen the device in leaked press shots, so it’s not a complete surprise anyhow. But what’s interesting is that the slides indicate that the handset will actually sport a 4.52-inch Super AMOLED Plus display, which is a bump up from the 4.3-inch screen of the original Galaxy S II.

Still, there are variants for AT&T and T-Mobile that have yet to be leaked. We’ll be covering the Samsung event live in NYC, so make sure to check back by 6pm EST for the full official details on the US debut of the Samsung Galaxy S II.

UPDATE: check out our hands-on post with the SGSIIE4GT aka Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch hands-on video and photo collection we’ve got right now!

Hurricane Irene may have postponed the much anticipated US debut of the Samsung Galaxy S II to tomorrow, but that hasn’t stopped official press images for the smartphone to start making the rounds. The first press shot to be revealed is that of the WiMAX variant called the Samsung Epic 4G Touch.

This particular Samsung Galaxy S II variant was originally rumored to be called the Samsung Within. That didn’t pan out, which is a good thing since the new name is more suited to this epic phone with possibly the slimmest and most lightweight chassis at 8.49mm thin and a powerful dual-core processor. For more details on the phone, you can check out our full review of the European release of the Galaxy S II.

Also, not panning out are rumors that the US Galaxy S II would debut on Verizon first. In fact, the latest reports say that the phone won’t be released on Verizon at all, but will launch on the other three major US carriers instead. This does give the Motorola Droid Bionic more chances at success now being the only dual-core LTE smartphone to launch on Verizon in the coming weeks.

Apple has won another victory against Samsung in their ongoing legal battle. The Dutch courts in The Hague have today issued a preliminary injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy S, Galaxy S II, and Ace smartphones that would ban the sale of the devices across almost all of Europe. The ruling, however, does not include Samsung’s Galaxy tablets.

According to FOSS Patents, the preliminary injunction only applies in member countries of the European Patent Organization where a specific Apple software patent is valid. There are several countries in which the patent was not made valid because Apple did not complete the filing and pay the costs. Those countries include Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Spain.

Also, Samsung’s Korean parent company is not bound by the ruling, but the company’s primary European distribution hub is believed to be in the Netherlands. Samsung will have to reorganize its logistics chain in Europe before the ruling takes effect in about 7 weeks. The deadline for the decision was originally set for September 15 with any injunctions to take effect after October 13, but the Dutch courts delivered their decision early, which will also give Samsung more time to regroup.

This more extensive filing against Samsung in the Netherlands comes after Apple’s filing in Germany, which initially issued an Europe-wide preliminary injunction on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, but was later reversed to be effective in Germany only. Apple had also successfully hindered Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales in Australia.

Samsung has just unleashed another teaser video hinting at the imminent US release of the much anticipated Galaxy S II smartphone. The device has been available in various parts of the world since April, and only now approaching a US launch. It is already suspected to make its big US debut during a special Samsung event scheduled for August 29.

The video hints at the imminent US arrival while showing off some features with clever shots of the device in various parts of the world. The video starts off with the Galaxy S II’s large screen and dual-core processor in Europe, its thin profile in Japan, its kick-ass sales all over the world, and ending with the message that soon it’ll be big in America.

The Samsung Galaxy S II sports a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen, 1.2GHz dual-core processor with 1GB RAM, 2-megapixel front-facing camera, and 8-megapixel camera capable of 1080p full HD video capture. And, it has an incredibly slim chassis at only 8.49mm thin. For more information, you can chekc out our full review of the European version of the Samsung Galaxy S II.

Details of Samsung’s various MWC 2011 wares have leaked, ahead of the company’s big reveal tomorrow evening in Barcelona. First spotted in a low-res press shot, the Samsung Galaxy S 2 (aka Samsung Galaxy S II) was caught at Paran along with some specs, before a higher-res version of the image was dug up. Meanwhile, partial specs for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 have emerged, and we’ve thrown in some info of our own on the slate after the cut.

According to the pre-announcement info, the Galaxy S 2 runs Gingerbread on a 1GHz dual-core processor, with a 4.3-inch display – presumably Samsung’s new Super AMOLED Plus panel – and HSPA+ connectivity. There’s also WiFi a/b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0, and the whole thing is believed to be 116g and just 8.49mm thick.

As for the Galaxy Tab 2, as we heard yesterday that has a 10.1-inch screen, 8-megapixel camera with Full HD video recording, and dual surround sound speakers. According to what we’ve heard, however, Samsung is using NVIDIA’s dual-core Tegra 2 processor, not a Qualcomm or Exynos CPU, and the display is a TFT not AMOLED-type panel.

We’ve also been told it has 16GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot, and is around 200g lighter than the current iPad despite having a bigger screen (and, supposedly, a smaller bezel). Samsung is, according to the people SlashGear has been talking to, attempting to beat Motorola’s XOOM to market as the first Honeycomb slate, in Europe if not in North America, though we don’t yet know which carriers it has partnered with (if any so far). We’ll know for sure tomorrow.

That big (probably) 4.5″ display will be Super AMOLED Plus, and the launch OS will be Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Expect microSD storage for up to 32 GB and an 8 MP camera with an LED flash, plus a 1.3 MP front-facing camera. There’s also an NFC chip, Bluetooth 3.0 and the standard micro-USB slot and 3.5 mm audio jack.

There’s no expected launch or reveal date for this new flagship smartphone, but MWC 2011 isn’t a bad guess for the first unveiling.

As Engadget spotted, while Samsung’s video editing people have been very careful to mask out any sign of a device in its models’ hands, that thoroughness didn’t quite extend to any reflections in shot. So, when the grinning lady in the screencap above is busy being blinded on the right, she’s also looking straight at an unmasked smartphone in the reflection on the left.

Now, it’s not clear whether Samsung has actually used real Galaxy S2 handsets for the filming of the promotion – we imagine those with better eyesight than us are already creeping through the 1080p version of the teaser on a frame-by-frame basis – but we won’t let that worry us too much. After all, SlashGear is off to MWC 2011 in just a couple of weeks time, and we’ll have all the news for you then.

Samsung has announced its 2010 financial figures, and there are strong results for the company’s mobile business. Mobile device sales in Q4 2010 topped 80.7m, up 17-percent compared to Q4 2009, with 280m sales for the whole of 2010. Samsung confirms that a dual-core Galaxy S replacement with a Super AMOLED Plus display (believed to be the Samsung Galaxy S2, debuting at MWC 2011 next month) will launch in the first half of 2011, while also announcing that it “will complement its Galaxy Tab with a range of devices to optimally meet various user needs.”

Samsung has been talking about a range of Galaxy Tab slates since the debut of the original 7-inch version, though so far we’ve only been expecting a larger, 10-inch model at MWC 2011. It seems the company’s plans are on course for a number of versions in 2011, however, buoyed by passing the 2m sales point with the original Tab in just three months.

Net sales across all of Samsung’s businesses were 41.87 trillion won in Q4 2010, up 7-percent year-on-year, and 154.63 trillion won for the whole of 2010, up 13-percent year-on-year. Net profit for Q4 and 2010 was 3.42 trillion won and 16.15 trillion won respectively, up 13-percent and 65-percent compared to the previous year.

Press Release:

SEOUL, Korea – January 28, 2011 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today announced revenues of 41.87 trillion Korean won on a consolidated basis for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2010, a 7-percent increase year-on-year. For the quarter, the company posted consolidated net income of 3.42 trillion won, a 13-percent increase year-on-year. Consolidated operating profit for the quarter was 3.01 trillion won.

In its earnings guidance disclosed on January 7, Samsung estimated fourth-quarter consolidated revenues would reach approximately 41 trillion won with an operating profit of 3 trillion won.

The fourth quarter results brought Samsung’s full year 2010 revenue to an all-time high of 154.63 trillion won, up 13-percent from last year. Net income reached a record high of 16.15 trillion won, up 65 percent compared with the previous year, while operating profit was 17.30 trillion won, also a record.

Samsung’s performance in the fourth quarter continued to be driven by memory semiconductors and strong sales of its cutting-edge smartphones. On a quarter-on-quarter basis, however, profit margins decreased primarily due to weakening pricing for memory semiconductors and LCD panels, as well as price competition in the TV market.

“Despite the difficult business environment including reduced IT demand caused by the economic slowdown, we achieved record-high results both in terms of sales and operating profit in 2010,” said Robert Yi, Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics’ Investor Relations Team. “However, considering overall business conditions, unlike 2010, we expect the traditional earnings pattern of a weak first half, with a strong second half to return in 2011.”

Samsung expected price competition to intensify in the consumer electronics, IT and mobile device markets in 2011, while major components prices are also forecast to decline. To offset pressures stemming from adverse market conditions, Samsung will focus on the cost competitiveness of its memory semiconductor portfolio, reducing marketing expenses and increasing shipments of high-end smartphones and tablet devices.

Samsung said the forecast continued appreciation of the Korean won during 2011 could have a negative impact on earnings, but the company’s diversified foreign exchange mix would limit the effect of movements in particular currencies.

Capex to Reach 23 Trillion Won in 2011

Capital expenditure on a consolidated basis reached 21.6 trillion won for the entire year of 2010, including 12.7 trillion won for the Semiconductor Business and 4.6 trillion won for the LCD Business.

In 2011, Capex is expected to reach 23 trillion won. As was announced in early January, 10.3 trillion won will be invested in the Semiconductor Business, including 5.8 trillion in memory and 4.2 in system LSI. A further 4.1 trillion won is allocated for the LCD Business, as well as 5.4 trillion won for subsidiary Samsung Mobile Display.

Premium Memory Makes a Difference

Samsung’s Semiconductor Business recorded a consolidated basis operating profit of 1.80 trillion won in the fourth quarter. Revenue reached 9.25 trillion won, a 16-percent increase year-on-year. For the full year 2010, the Semiconductor Business registered 10.11 trillion won in operating profit on revenue of 37.64 trillion won, a record-high.

Despite a weakening market trend, Samsung secured profitability by increasing the portion of high-margin products such as server and mobile DRAM, as well as by strengthening its market position with increased production of 40nm-class processes and below.

While the global DRAM market suffered from falling prices and weakening PC DRAM demand, NAND chips did well with help from surging demand for smartphones and tablet PCs. Samsung’s market differentiation strategy in the NAND sector was to expand production of 30nm-class processes and below.

The DRAM market is forecast to improve in the second half of the year driven by growth in PC replacement demand from businesses. Samsung will continue to focus on energy-efficient green memory solutions for servers and enhancing technology leadership to maintain the profit margin of the Semiconductor Business.

LCD Looks to Second Half for Rebound

The LCD Business recorded an operating profit of 0.10 trillion won on revenue of 7.20 trillion won in the fourth-quarter, down 1 percent from a year ago as increasing shipments could not offset price falls. For fiscal year 2010, Samsung’s LCD Business posted 1.99 trillion won in operating profit with 29.92 trillion won in revenue.

Overall unit sales for the period increased more than 10 percent quarter-on-quarter. While shipments for IT panels climbed supported by demand for tablet PCs, the fall in demand for TV panels was compounded by a buildup of inventory in the TV set market.

Average industry sales prices retreated across all segments in the fourth quarter. The average price for TV panels dropped 12 percent, with prices for monitor panels dipping 5 percent and notebook PC panels falling 3 percent.

Samsung forecasted LCD panel prices will remain low in the first quarter of 2011 due to supply outpacing demand. However, the company anticipated incremental demand increases in the second half led by the economic recovery and inventory restocking by set makers. Samsung aims to drive market growth with a new line-up of entry-level LED panels and explore the high-potential market for tablet PC panels.

Strong Smartphone Growth Powers Mobile Business

Samsung’s telecommunications businesses – Mobile Communications and Telecommunications Systems – registered a record quarterly operating profit of 1.44 trillion won for the period, up 38 percent year-on-year. Fourth quarter revenue reached 12.11 trillion won, compared with 10.17 trillion won for same period of 2009. By finishing the year strongly, Samsung achieved full year 2010 operating profit of 4.30 trillion won on sales of 41.20 trillion won for its telecommunications businesses.

Driven by strong year-end demand for the company’s flagship smartphones, Samsung’s mobile device sales reached 80.7 million units for the quarter, up 17 percent year-on-year. This brought total sales for the year to 280 million units, registering growth of 23 percent and outperforming the overall market.

Following its introduction in June, Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S smartphone has achieved worldwide sales of 10 million units, while the Galaxy Tab – an Android-powered tablet device – attracted strong year-end demand. In emerging markets, Samsung’s diverse product mix of mass-market smartphones and touch-screen feature phones also registered solid sales growth.

While mobile device sales are expected to contract slightly in the first quarter of 2011 due to weak seasonal demand, Samsung forecast high single-digit sales growth for the year overall, driven by the fast-expanding smartphone and tablet segments. Samsung announced it will introduce the successor to its Galaxy S smartphone during the first half of 2011, featuring a dual-core processor and Super AMOLED Plus display to further enrich user experience. With its growing lineup, the company is targeting smartphone sales of 60 million units for the year, double that of 2010. In the tablet market, Samsung will complement its Galaxy Tab with a range of devices to optimally meet various user needs.

The Telecommunication Systems Business continues to strengthen its leadership in Mobile WiMAX and explore new business opportunities in Long-Term Evolution networks, cementing Samsung’s position as a total solution provider offering both infrastructure and devices.

Demand for LED TV to Get Stronger

Samsung’s Digital Media businesses, which encompass Visual Display, Digital Appliances, IT Solutions, and Digital Imaging, posted quarterly revenues of 15.97 trillion won for the October to December period, up 3 percent year-on-year. The businesses registered a loss of 0.17 trillion won despite improved performance in TV and IT products. For the full year 2010, the Digital Media businesses’ combined revenue totaled 57.26 trillion, up 12 percent from 2009, with an operating profit of 0.49 trillion won.

Samsung shipped 12.72 million flat panel TVs in the fourth quarter, a 40 percent jump compared with the previous quarter and a 17 percent on-year increase. LED TVs sales grew strongly during the fourth quarter as consumers in developed markets continued to adopt this new technology. Market demand for LED TVs is forecast to rise further, with the portion of LED models in the overall LCD segment expected to reach 51 percent this year.

In 2011, market demand for flat panel TVs is forecast to increase 11 percent, helped by strong emerging market sales. To enhance profitability, Samsung aims to increase sales of premium products such as LED, 3D and Smart TVs. It will also market region-specific models along with low-cost models in emerging markets.

In order to allow more consumers to enjoy 3D TV, Samsung will expand its 3D TV line-up beyond the premium segment, while offering improved picture quality and 3D glasses technology. Samsung’s Smart TVs will get smarter this year by adding various new video and search features, and expanding its portfolio of TV apps from the current 400 to 1,000 by the end of 2011.

Sales revenue of the Digital Appliances Business climbed 16 percent year-on-year due to robust sales in developed markets and some emerging markets, such as Russia. Sales are expected to continue to expand in 2011 with the launch of differentiated products, while the business will expand and improve its overseas operations.

Both new products are set to be unveiled on February 13, 2011 at the MWC during President JK Shin’s speech. The promo slides for this new tablet lead some to suspect it will be 10″ and pack the same dual-core 1 GHz Orion processor as the S2.

The S2 is also expected to be capable of full 1080p recording on its 8 MP camera. It will have a 4.3″ Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen, NFC reader and 1 GB of RAM. Oh, and it’ll be .9mm thinner than the Galaxy S. If 2011 follows the same pattern as 2010, Sprint’s model may end up with a sliding keyboard and a little bit of extra weight.

It looks like Samsung could have their next generation of Galaxy S smartphones out in stores right alongside the iPhone 5. I forsee a lot of line-watching this summer.

Samsung isn’t exactly holding back when it comes to teasing what it has for MWC 2011 next month, with its “Evolution is Fate” campaign promising a replacement for the best-selling Galaxy S, and spec tidbits continue to leak out of Korea ahead of the big reveal. According to Nocut News, the Samsung Galaxy S2 – internally known as the Samsung Seine – will use the company’s new 1GHz Orion processor, based on dual ARM Cortex A9 cores, paired with an 8-megapixel camera and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

The Galaxy S2 camera is said to be capable of 1080p Full HD video recording, while up front is a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 Super AMOLED Plus touchscreen. Samsung is believed to have included NFC, as on the Nexus S, along with 1GB of RAM, and the whole thing is said to be just 9mm thick. In contrast, the original Galaxy S is 9.9mm thick.

Orion began sampling back in Q4 2010 and was scheduled to go into mass production sometime in the first half of this year. It supports Full HD output via an HDMI 1.3a port – in fact the chip can concurrently run an external display while simultaneously driving two onboard displays, not that we’re expecting Samsung to make the most of that capability – and has an embedded GPS receiver. The same dual-core chip should also power Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Tab slates.
