Rivalry between Samsung and LG runs strong – the two companies took thinly veiled pot-shots at each other’s neighboring booths during press briefings at the Korea World IT Show today – and so with a brand spanking new LG Optimus Big on hand and a Samsung Galaxy S II in our pocket, it seemed fitting to see how the two uberphones compare. Read on for the first foray in what’s likely to be a lengthy battle royale.
The Optimus Big isn’t one of LG’s most inspired names, but it certainly describes the new Android smartphone well. Its 4.3-inch display puts it among the biggest of the current Android crop, and unsurprisingly pits it against longtime rivals Samsung’s well-esteemed Galaxy S II. We grabbed some hands-on time while strutting the halls of the Korea World IT Show today; read on for the full details and some video.

Samsung Mobile has announced a second event for May, sending SlashGear a teaser invite for a launch that will take place on May 24 in New York. The invite will follow Samsung and AT&T's "special announcement" on May 5 which is expected to be the launch of the Infuse 4G.

This week was heavy on developments in the smartphone location tracking controversy that now involves not only Apple and Google, but all six major players in mobile platforms including Microsoft, Nokia, HP, and RIM. Not only are there class-action lawsuits, but Congress is also stepping in with the House Committee on Privacy seeking some answers. Another topic heavy with new developments was Sony’s PlayStation network outage, which continues to leave its over 70 million subscribers without service and possibly with compromised personal information and credit card data. Samsung has given the Galaxy S II the smartphone equivalent of a champagne bottle across the bows, kicking off plans to launch the Android handset on over 140 carriers spread across 120 countries. Star of a media event in Korea this morning, the Galaxy S II not only offers a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus display but the thumb-research to back up its usability. Apparently Samsung took its tape measure around Korea, figuring out that the average thumb is 58.6mm long, before green-lighting the huge display as suitable for one-handed use.

It’s been a long time since our first hands-on play with the white iPhone 4: all the way back at WWDC 2010, in fact, when the fourth-gen smartphone was brand spanking new and sparkling under Apple’s halogens. That triumphant launch paved the way for the black handset with no white accompaniment, the start of an embarrassing series of delays as Apple struggled with untold technical difficulties. Now, April 28, more than ten months since its unveil, the white iPhone 4 has finally gone on sale.
It’s pretty good timing for Verizon’s DROID Charge by Samsung to arrive today, just when our Samsung Galaxy S II review goes live. Both smartphones share a couple of important features, most notably the 4.3-inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display. Unlike the previous AMOLED and Super AMOLED technology, the new Super AMOLED Plus allows you to see the display much better out in sunlight thanks to 50-percent more sub-pixels (this means twelve sub-pixels instead of eight). Looking at the display makes us want to weep like a 12-year old boy on Christmas morning. The Droid Charge has LTE to differentiate it, the second 4G smartphone to Verizon’s line-up. Samsung is ramping up its marketing for the Samsung Galaxy S II as we get closer and closer to the May 1st launch in the UK. We still think the extreme unboxings were mighty awesome of Samsung, especially with our own Chris Davies unboxing a Galaxy S II while strapped into a rally car going 120mph over bumpy dirt roads. But this new commercial released today shifts focus from its power and speed to its amazing thinness of only 8.49mm.

Near Field Communications has a lot of potential to make all sorts of things easier to do when integrated into some of the most common gadgets that people use today. One of the coolest uses for NFC tech for the gadget fan is that over time as more and more NFC payment systems are integrated into stores and vending machines around the country we will be able to pay for all sorts of items using our mobile phones rather than having to dig out a credit card or cash.
