Samsung’s new Galaxy Note II arrives with some heritage to explain it, though a 5.5-inch smartphone can still take some explaining. After its first-gen predecessor blustered its way into a new segment – known by some and loathed by others as “phablets” – the new model tweaks the formulae some, boosting performance, smoothing the design, and polishing the digital pen elements that help set it apart from the smartphone crowd. EE puts LTE phones up for sale (sort of): Galaxy Note II LTE incoming

New 4G carrier EE has thrown three of its LTE smartphones up for purchase today, and confirmed the Galaxy Note II LTE is also incoming, though you can't actually use the high-speed data connection yet. The HTC One XL, Samsung Galaxy S III, and Huawei Ascend P1 LTE are all available from today through Orange and T-Mobile UK, though for the moment users will only see 3G data speeds. Samsung’s Galaxy Note II goes on sale in UK

Samsung's Galaxy Note II has gone on sale, with the 5.5-inch phablet arriving in the UK just over a month since it was first unveiled. The quadcore handset is available through Three - though it's also due to hit other carriers - as well as unlocked, priced from £69 ($111) with a new agreement or around £528 ($852) SIM-free. Meanwhile, the Note II will arrive in the US later this month. Samsung is teasing a new Galaxy Note II event for October 24, while Google turned 14 years old today and celebrated with a brand new doodle. Qualcomm introduced a pair of new processors for mobile devices today, and a series of new iPhone patents deals with things like disappearing buttons, 3D displays, and invisible speakers. We've had a rather interesting Tuesday here at SlashGear, thanks in no small part to RIM. The company held its BlackBerry Jam today, introducing us to new BlackBerry 10 features like Peek and Flow. We also learned that BlackBerry 10 will come with support for your favorite social networks, even offering a native Facebook app. Carrier testing on the new mobile OS will begin next month, and RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said that BlackBerry has a good shot at becoming number three behind Android and iOS. Friday is here once again, which means that for many of us, the weekend has already started. Of course, today was the big iPhone 5 launch, and there was no lack of news stories to go along with it. Welcome to Wednesday evening everyone! Today brought us HTC's highly-anticipated event, and it did not disappoint. It was there that HTC revealed two brand new Windows Phone 8 devices, the Windows Phone 8X and the Windows Phone 8S. Went went hands-on with both devices not long after they were announced, and shortly before HTC announced that these new phones will be landing at Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile in November. US Cellular Galaxy Note II priced at $300 for late-October launch

Samsung's Galaxy Note II may be confirmed for all "major" US carriers, but so far only US Cellular has put its money where its mouth is and announced a price for the 5.5-inch phablet.
