The original Galaxy Gear caught our eye at its IFA 2013 launch but failed to set the smartwatch world alight, but Samsung is hoping more refined versions will. Samsung has revealed two new smartwatches, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo, refining its original Galaxy Gear wearable and ditching Android for Tizen in the process. Revealed at MWC 2014, the Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo each have a 1.63-inch 320 x 320 Super AMOLED display and run Samsung-led Tizen on a 1GHz dualcore processor. Differentiating the two is that the Neo lacks a camera, a 2-megapixel shooter which the Gear 2 integrates into its main body, not the strap as before.
HTC, so the rumor machine goes, is readying its first smartwatches, at least one of which is said to pipe Google Now directly to the wrist. If you're going to build a smartwatch, and you're anywhere close to being committed to Android, I'd argue Google Now is a pretty solid place to start. It certainly satisfies one of the key metrics I tend to judge wearables by: it "gets" context.

This week Samsung appears to have had its hand forced as rumor surfaced of sore sales of their Galaxy Gear smartwatch, making them reveal their "true" numbers to the world. It was this morning when Samsung spoke with Reuters on the subject, saying specifically that the watch had become "the world's most popular smartwatch with sales reaching 800,000" in the two month period since the device was first put on the market. This would indeed put the device well ahead of the competition, but only if those numbers actually reflected the final sales of the machine to consumers.
