This Tuesday on a rather sunny post-hurricane NYC afternoon, Samsung announced their newest version of the top-selling Android smartphone, in this iteration called the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. We've seen just a little bit of this device in the past, it having had a tiny outing earlier today, press shots, and a family outing having taken place last week. What makes this new device unique compared to the original version is a handful of new features, the most obvious of these being the larger 4.52-inch display.

All of the following information comes from an anonymous tipster lending some logo-marks to the fray in a two-tone look at the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch (aka the longest name for a handset in the history of the world,) HTC EVO Design 4G, and Motorola Admiral. The tipster offers no additional information on any of the devices in this short list, but many conclusions can be inferred.

Details of a number of new CDMA phones have leaked, including the Samsung Epic 2 and what could well be the WiMAX version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, aka the "Galaxy Within." According to This is my next's source, the Epic 2 - which will replace last year's Epic 4G - with a 4-inch display, 1.2GHz single-core Hummingbird processor and an 8-megapixel camera, as well as a slide-out QWERTY keyboard of course, will drop sometime in Q3 2011.

Several devices are finally getting their updates for Android 2.2 Froyo that will be rolled out in batches over-the-air. But with all updates, there's always a chance of firmware issues wrecking your phone. So be sure to backup first. Sprint last week announced that they would be rolling out Froyo updates for the Samsung Epic 4G, but had to quickly halt the update as complaints arose over Epic 4G phones getting bricked after the new install. Samsung Epic 4G owners on Sprint may have to wait a while longer to update their devices to Android 2.2 Froyo. Sprint has stopped all over-the-air updates to the device and has taken down the download link for the update as well. These measures were taken after Sprint received several complaints from Epic 4G owners that the update wrecked their phones.

Sprint announced today that the Samsung Epic 4G will be receiving Android 2.2 Froyo updates starting on February 21st. The update will be sent in batches as wireless downloads and should be fully accessible by the end of the week--February 25th.

Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G update delayed over server screw-up

Bad news if you've been chugging Mountain Dew and chewing on coffee beans, staring fixedly at your Samsung Epic 4G waiting for the promised Sprint firmware update.  According to the carrier, plans to release the OTA update - which addresses WiFi battery drain in standby, lag in uploading large emails, the inability to download Amazon MP3 files over 4G connections, and generally speeds up 3G uploading - were scuppered over "administrative issues" with getting the necessary files onto Google's servers.
