The Tweet-a-Watt project was good – in fact good enough to win a competition – but there are a few obvious flaws in the first iteration of the design.  Not least is the requirement to have a computer turned on to receive power-use stats and tweet about them; now Adafruit Industries are back with their solution, a hacked $40 ASUS router with XBee wireless capabilities.

If you’ve paid out for a high-speed WiMAX subscription, the last thing you want is to be stuck using it with just one device at a time.  That’s presumably the motivation behind the Clearwire CLEAR Spot Personal Hotspot, a battery-powered router intended to share your WiMAX hookup with nearby WiFi b/g devices.

Verizon are preparing to launch a personal mobile hotspot, in the shape of the MiFi 2200.  Basically an EVDO modem integrated with a WiFi router and battery for standalone use, the MiFi 2200 allows multiple computers to share a single Verizon CDMA connection.

USB 3G modems are becoming more and more common, but sometimes you want to easily share the connection between more than one machine.  That’s where the Cradlepoint PHS300 steps in, a compact battery-powered WiFi router that portions out a 3G connection.  Just Another Mobile Monday have been reviewing the $179.99 PHS300, and aside from a few reservations the judgment is good.

Clearwire are preparing to launch a portable WiFi router compatible with a Motorola WiMax USB stick modem, intended for sharing a WiMAX connection with more than one user.  The router, seen here in prototype form, was demonstrated at the official Clear launch in Portland, Oregon, yesterday.

We’re starting to see a lot of devices wearing multiple hats, so to speak, and the D-Link Xtreme N DIR-685 is no exception.  Not only is the DIR-685 an 802.11n Wi-Fi router, it also packs network attached storage (NAS) and D-Link’s SharePort Technology, which allows printers, scanners and other devices to be shared over the network via USB.

free public wi fi on boston trains gadgetellOnly a few hours ago we reported that Japanese bullet trains would be adding a Wi-Fi service that commuters would be able to pay to use when traveling. Now there is another company that is adding Wi-Fi to their mode of transportation, only this service will be free to all who whish to stay connected.
