Cyanogenmod is implementing a new feature for its future releases that will allow you to control the camera on your Android device without needing to use your hands. With the new feature, you can set a timer for your Android device to take a snapshot, or you can say one of three trigger words (whiskey, cheese, or cid) to command your camera to take a picture.

The new hands-free feature will be available from this point onward for future Cyanogenmod 10.1 releases, beginning with the group’s nightly releases. To enable this feature, all you need to do is head to your camera settings and enable the “persistent hands-free” option. Afterwards, you can adjust the handsfree settings by tapping the “Cid” head on the top left corner of your device to adjust how you want to take your hands-free pictures.

In the video above, the new feature is demonstrated using two different trigger words: Cheese, and Cid. But in order to use the trigger word command, it looks like you need to access the voice command feature in the quick settings first. Nonetheless, it’s still a nifty feature to have. For the timer settings, you can choose to set a a 10-second delay upwards to a 60-second delay before your camera takes a picture.

As our friends at Android Community have noted, the timer settings aren’t persistent, meaning you will have to adjust it everytime you want to use it. It make sense because you won’t always have to delay your snapshots. This new feature should make taking group/family portraits much easier, and it also helps make Android cameras a more convenient alternative to a stand-alone digital camera.

With the Nexus 4 smartphone and the Nexus 10 tablet launching today on the Google Play store (and both running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean), it makes sense that the new and updated version of Jelly Bean would makes its way to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), and that’s exactly what’s happening.

Google just added binaries for Jelly Bean 4.2 to AOSP, which means that custom Android 4.2 ROMs are right around the corner. Soon, you’ll have custom ROMs that include all the cool new features that are in Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, like Photosphere, the quick settings pull-down menu, a better keyboard, and lots more.

Google has pushed Android 4.2 binaries for all three of their Nexus devices, which consist of the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and the new 10-inch Nexus 10 tablet. Also on the list are both versions of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which is Google’s last-generation Nexus smartphone. You’ll see custom ROMs for all four devices shortly.

Of course, this is only relevant to developers, tweakers, ROM builders, and rooters — the average Android user who doesn’t play around with their phone and take risks need not apply. Developers are probably working on the new Android 4.2 binaries as we speak, so we should be seeing 4.2 nightly builds soon.

CyanogenMod 10, the latest CyanogenMod ROM version that’s based in Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, is being rolled out to a handful of devices today. Version 10 has seen tons of nightly and beta builds for the past several months, but finally stable builds are being released for a selection of Android devices.

The CyanogenMod 10 stable ROM is now available to download for the Samsung Galaxy S II, LG Optimus Black, and the Samsung Galaxy S III. It’s also available for the Galaxy Nexus, the Nexus 7 tablet, and even the HTC EVO 4G. The average file size for the ROM is between 150-160MB and they’re available now the CM website.

Some of the new features available in CyanogenMod 10 include an “expandable desktop” mode, a built-in root-enabled file manager, as well as support for new devices. If you don’t see a stable build for your device, you’ll have to hang tight, as they’re still rolling out stable builds. However, some builds have been failing for users, so you may even want to wait a little while until the issues get resolved.

If you have a rooted Android device and haven’t yet tried out a CyanogenMod ROM, we highly suggest doing so. The ROM gives you the vanilla Android experience with a ton of exclusive features and settings that you can play around with. So, if you’re wanting a bit more out of your Android UI, CyanogenMod is a great option.

Recent rumors have suggested that Samsung will release its Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy S III on August 29th alongside the introduction of the Galaxy Note II, and just yesterday we saw a video appear on the internet with a user showing off the Jelly Bean firmware. Now the full ROM has leaked out for all to try: if you’re feeling brave, then SamMobile has the ROM available for download, but you’ll have to be comfortable with flashing it to your device manually.

According to SamMobile, the Jelly Bean update hasn’t quite been finalized, with the leaked firmware build a pre-release version built on July 31st. The site says that the final update is still on track for the end of the month, and that it will be delivered to Galaxy S III owners both over-the-air and via KIES. They’ve also compiled a list of new features that the Jelly Bean update brings.

Samsung will apparently be offering a new clock in the notification bar which matches the one found on stock Jelly Bean, and Google Now is accessed by touching the Google search widget bar instead of long-pressing the home button. Some new live wallpapers have been added, and a new “dormant mode” has been added to the phone, but it’s not clear exactly what that entails.

It sounds like there’s a couple of bugs to go along with the ROM too, with SamMobile reporting that SD cards are formatted after installing Jelly Bean, and that certain apps fail to install. They recommend that users wait for the official update that should be coming at the end of the month, but the pre-release version is there for those who know what they’re doing. If you want a taste of the future, head over and read the instructions very carefully.

Google may have introduced the Nexus 7 at a low $199 price point, but Amazon brought the Kindle Fire to the masses last year at the same price point. Although it was running a forked version of Android, it could be rooted and hacked to run custom ROMs. Now some enterprising hackers on xda-developers have ported the latest version of Android, Jelly Bean, across to Amazon’s cheap tablet.

Not much is known about the ROM right now, although it looks like basic functionality is working. Users will need to root their Kindle Fire first, then flash the provided ROM and Google Apps package. A quick fix is then needed in order to restore WiFi functionality, but after that you should be good to go. The only major feature that’s missing is hardware acceleration for video playback. Texas Instruments hasn’t added in code to support Jelly Bean just yet, so users may be waiting before they can get perfectly smooth playback in apps like YouTube and Netflix.

Other than that, you’re getting the full AOSP experience, with the ROM compiled from the latest source (4.1.1). Google were keen to point out the new features at I/O which included Project Butter, introducing frame buffering and VSync for dramatically improved performance and fluidity throughout Android. Google Now, meanwhile, acts as a personal assistant that will monitor your habits and surroundings while serving up relevant information such as the weather or local transit points. Notifications have also been improved, and some mild UI changes have been made.

Aside from the introduction of the Nexus 7, the big reveal out of Google I/O was the announcement of Jelly Bean. The update promised to bring speed to the Android OS with Project Butter, resulting in smooth 60fps animations and transitions, as well as some smaller tweaks. Now Google has officially released the Jelly Bean source code, merging it into the current AOSP codebase.

Jean-Baptiste Queru took to Google Groups last night to make the announcement, detailing how proprietary binaries will also be available for the Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Don’t worry too much about older devices, as Nexus S and Xoom binaries will be coming in the future. Now that Jelly Bean is being merged into the AOSP, custom ROM makers will be able to take advantage of the latest code and put out some new ROMs for a wide variety of devices.

The CyanogenMod team has already expressed their interest in getting a far-reaching Jelly Bean ROM up to speed as soon as work on CM9 (which is based off Ice Cream Sandwich) has been finalized and released. In the meantime, you can expect smaller groups and individuals to pump out some ROMs for popular devices. Keep a close eye on xda-developers.

The hacked and completely fan-made Android-based ROM known as CyanogenMod has reached a massive 2 million installs this week, reminding us that it is far and away the most successful Android 3rd party system of all time. This update comes only a few months after CyanogenMod reached 1 million installs, the Google mobile OS-based hack growing now as what appears to be an exponential rate. The install rate is tracked by the CyanogenMod team’s own CM stat tracker which shows also that the last 24 hours have had an additional 11,294 installs as well.

The giant upswing in installs here comes quite obviously in the span of time which includes the release of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. CyanogenMod takes whatever the most recent Android system is and tweaks it to what the team sees as perfect, porting it then to masses of Android devices, one after the other. This system ends up putting the newest version of Android on hacked phones quite a bit faster than mobile carriers and manufacturers are able, this drawing in the fans in droves.

CyanogenMod is currently on version 9, this version having a fully functional Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich build as its base. The team has a rabid following including a community that gladly helps them test out early builds of the software well before it’s complete, this speeding up the process between initiation and final product at least twofold.

This year it does remain possible that Android 5.0 Jellybean will be released at Google I/O or beyond, at which time the CyanogenMod team will release a new version of CyanogenMod once again. One way or another, we’ll see 3 million installs by the end of 2012 without a doubt.

This week we’re getting our first real glimpse of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on the unique “phablet” family with the AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note. This software has not come through traditional means, instead being pushed by hackers and excited developers wishing to bypass the process Samsung and AT&T must go through before they can update their devices officially. Have a look below at our hands-on with the device running this new tasty treat packed with Ice Cream Sandwich goodness and, barring the fear that grips you when you think of hacking, grab it for yourself!

The Samsung Galaxy Note is a machine with several elements that make the implementation of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich a bit more difficult than it is on a plain old smartphone or tablet. The first of these is it’s unique screen size – no other device on the market has the same display. With this there’s also the S-Pen factor – how does a developer work in the technology Samsung’s developed for that built-in pen so that Android 4.0 can make full use of it? Have a peek at this early solution:

You’ll find that everything seems to be in good working order, including the camera, data connection, and even Face Unlock for your unlock screen. You yourself can grab this update and load it up asap once you’ve unlocked your device. Here’s where the process gets complicated for the user who’s never hacked their Android device before – or for the weak of stomach: to get this build of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich you’ll have to do the following: Boot to flash mode (power+volume down), use rootz one click root, and install the ROM. This process works only with Windows machines thus far, but OS X is never far behind these days.

There have been a couple of Ice Cream Sandwich leaks for the GSM version of the Samsung Galaxy Note, but they were strictly beta releases with some functionality buggy, broken, or missing. ICS updates for the Note have been promised for Q2, and we might be close to a release seeing as how a ROM was just leaked for the AT&T version of the Note.

The folks at RootzWiki managed to get their hands on the ROM and share it for the whole world to enjoy. So far, it seems to be stable and functional, with just about every major feature working, and very few bugs reported.

Graphically, of course, this is still very much in line with what Samsung have been doing on their Android handsets. TouchWiz is slathered over the Ice Cream Sandwich UI. At first glance, you might not even notice that anything is different, but there are some ICS elements that peek through from underneath, such as the Settings menu, with similar toggles and switches to what ICS served up.

If you were hoping to see the Premium Suite with this ROM, you’re out of luck. You’ll most likely only see it on the final ROM updates that go out to the international and US versions of the Note. RootzWiki, in the meantime, have compiled a detailed list of what’s working and what might give you some trouble, as well as instructions of how to flash the file. Head on over if you’re feeling brave and want to give it a go.

What you’re about to see is a video of a person using the international edition of the Samsung Galaxy S II with what SamMobile blog says is the first build of Ice Cream Sandwich made for the device by Samsung – what you’ll notice here is not just that the device has the newest version of Android on it, but that Samsung’s own custom user interface has been fully integrated. When we first saw the TouchWiz that’s closest to what you’re about to see, it was way back at the start of 2011 at Mobile World Congress (and the famous CTIA Philip Berne event) with the launch of the original Galaxy S II (aka the one you see here), then again in a slightly updated version here in the USA. What this represents is Samsung’s continued reliance on said user interface to differentiate their products from the competition.

If you ask any one of our staff here at SlashGear, they certainly wouldn’t say that TouchWiz is the least pleasing of all the custom user interfaces that Android device manufacturers have implemented on their products, but you wont find a single person who wouldn’t rather simply have the original stock Ice Cream Sandwich as presented in the other Samsung hero device at the moment: the Galaxy Nexus. That’s why you’ll find more than a couple Android superfans out there today freaking out over the idea that they wont get their precious Vanilla-flavored Ice Cream Sandwich on the official update to their Galaxy S II units come early 2012.

This build is called Android 4.0.1 I9100XXKP1 and is a custom ROM at the moment for those of you looking to flash it to your device. Should you choose to run this ROM, know that it is by no means a final build, and not a lot of things work at the moment. For those of you looking to be a bit adventurous, you can access the download over at SamMobile (password: samfirmware.com) — and note, for those of you not into the whole hacking world, that this will void your warrantee more than likely. Good luck, everyone!

When you’ve got the opportunity to improve upon the most advanced version of a software made by one of the biggest tech companies in the entire world, you do it, and that’s just what the team responsible for MIUI is doing with Google’s Ice Cream Sandwich. MIUI is a ROM, aka the clothing and brains of your device, and outside the one device they’ve developed across the sea, the only way you can get it on your device is to hack it. What the news is today is that there’s a new version in the works, one made specifically for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, and like its predecessors, it’ll both take all the best bits of the operating system and re-arranges them for a lovely dessert that’s without compare.

Have a peek here at the a selection of screenshots, each of them in their current form in Alpha, then let us know if this looks like something you’ll be interested in using in the very near future. Currently you’re able to get MIUI for a few devices in the Samsung world including the Nexus S and the Galaxy S II, and for those of you that’ve used it in the past, you’ll wonder why you ever used anything else. It’s sort of like a mix between Android and Apple, but with a heavy bias towards the best parts of Android with a slightly rounded flavoring.

If you do work with the current version of MIUI, I suggest you find the Simpsons theme and run with it. Your loading screen is a donut floating in space, everything is pink with sprinkles, and the icons are soft but the images are strong enough to be usable. The same is true about the icons you see here in the basic build of the Ice Cream Sandwich version of MIUI. A bunch of lovely flat squares and great breaks between easy to read text blocks. What more could you ask for? Coming soon!

The development community can make any phone live long past its manufacturer support timeline. For the HTC HD2, which features plenty of hardware to make it a stand-out device even in today’s market, the fact that it wouldn’t be able to be upgraded to Windows Phone 7 rubbed a lot of owners the wrong way. But, thanks to the development community, Windows Phone 7 hasn’t been a complete stranger to the device. And now, thanks to Dark Forces Team (DFT) a true-to-life Windows Phone 7 ROM is available for the HD2.

Unlike some earlier builds that had been released for the handset, this version of Windows Phone 7 is functioning at 100%. However, the developers weren’t able to include Windows Live services. That means you can’t download any applications or other types of media from the Windows Marketplace, nor will you be able to take advantage of Xbox LIVE or put your Avatar on your phone.

The missing Windows Live services obviously make the experience not the complete one envisioned by Microsoft, but for those who own an HD2 and want to get their hands on the newest mobile Operating System (OS) from Microsoft, but don’t want to buy a new phone, it’s better than nothing. You can check out a quick demo of the ROM loading onto an HD2 below.

Let me talk to you for a moment about a couple of the odder things that happened today, and this is outside the story you’re going to hear about in the special “The Daily Slash” section you all know and love. First, there’s a lot of ports, ROMS, and hacks flying around the smartphone world on a day-to-day, but today there was a rather important one surfacing: Android to iPhone. Like two rival gangs having a child together. No violence between them yet, but someone DID get shot today – a Galaxy Tab. In response, Angry Birds released 45 new levels, and someone records a UFO on an HTC EVO 4G. TRON throws a card into the hat with their 3rd giant trailer, iPhone’s GLASSGATE ramps up, and all Apple handhelds grow a little tail. All this and more, today, on THE DAILY SLASH!

SlashTABLETWAR You know there’s a barrage of bad tablets coming out now as if the biggest tabs were falling down a mountain, knocking the smaller ones free as they topple. Here’s something that, when you watch the Queen-laden introduction video below, might be excellent enough to take flight and knock free a few pebbles of it’s own. This is the “Kno,” the “text book of the future,” founded by semiconductor physics PhD holder Babur Habib and serial entrepreneur Osman Rashid. This video is traveling fast across these internets, and I kinda sorta wish I had one of these “Kno” devices when I was in school, for sure. Find more information at the Kno homepage and/or watch the uplifting video below.

Since Microsoft and HTC basically confirmed that they were abandoning the HD2 in the move to Windows Phone 7, the developer community has instead turned their attention to getting a solid Android build on the 4.3-inch smartphone. Last we saw, Froyo was working on the HD2 but with some conspicuous issues; now, a new ROM promises an almost 100-percent functional experience, suitable for daily use.

Video demo after the cut

That includes 3G, Bluetooth (HID profile aside), WiFi and GPS, along with the camera (plus flash) and all the other basic functionality. It’s been paired with a custom UI that stands pretty distinct not only from the HD2′s original theme but what HTC are doing in general with Sense; likely to be an acquired taste, perhaps, but with the underlying code now solid we can only assume others will come along and inject some different aesthetics.

HDBlog.it put together a video demo which shows not only the new, minimal UI but all the working functionality of the HD2 Froyo ROM, including turn-by-turn Google Maps Navigation. For the first time this looks like something we’d actually trust to put on our HD2.

Last time we saw Android running on a previously Windows Mobile device, it was the HTC Touch Pro2 and the Android 2.1 ROM from the Google Nexus One. This time around it’s the turn of the HTC Touch Diamond2, and the Android 2.1 ROM from the HTC Legend, which means as well as all that Google goodness there are lashings of HTC Sense, too.

It’s a pretty polished ROM, too, with all but the GPS and camera working (though there are a few reported Bluetooth glitches that should be easy to work around). Obviously in the process of installing you do run the risk of bricking your smartphone, but plenty of people have gone the distance and ended up with a handset showing a new lease of life.

For a start it’s built for x86 processors – after all, it comes from the emulator not a phone ROM – and lacks the necessary drivers and other elements needed to control phone hardware. Even if we had all that, there’s more to the HD2′s incompatibility than just the number of physical buttons.

Microsoft have axed support for external memory cards and all Windows Phone 7 devices will have to come with large chunks of internal flash memory. That means the HD2′s internal memory is simply too meagre, so until someone hacks the OS to recognize cards as onboard storage it’s a no-go.

Still, we’re expecting interesting things from the developer community with this in-depth access to the underlying code. The absence of true multitasking and the locked-down Windows Phone Marketplace for app distribution are both frustrations that many users would like to see “jailbreaks” for.

[via IntoMobile]

While it may be getting on for a year old now, we’ve still got a soft-spot for HTC’s Touch HD, so it’s nice to see the homebrew ROM community endevoring to bring the latest software to the smartphone. XDA Developers forum member Miri has put together a combination ROM of Windows Mobile 6.5 and the new TouchFLO 3D 2.6 build fresh from pre-production HTC Leo handsets, and you can see it demonstrated after the cut.

Video demo after the cut

Leo’s new widget layout and fettled menu bars look great on the Touch HD’s display, even if it’s a little smaller (at 3.8-inches) than the massive 4.3-inch panel the new HTC phone totes. There are more animations, too, though the whole thing seems to lack speed; that could be because the Leo is expected to have a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, compared the Touch HD’s which is just over half that speed.

Still, if you’re wondering what TouchFLO 3D 2.6 will look like and how it will interact with Windows Mobile 6.5 then check out the video below. We’re curious to see what Microsoft’s rumored WM6.5 UI refresh looks like, tentatively tipped for early in 2010, but we’ll have to wait for the next round of leaks before seeing that.

If you’re looking for more out of your personal media player (PMP) but don’t exactly have the cash to throw down on an iPod Touch, the Muse G11 just might be for you. Unlike the iPod Touch you can plan Super Nintendo ROMs without the need to jailbreak or modify anything.

The bright 3.2-inch, 432 x 240 touchscreen swivels so that it can be flipped open for easy access to the screen without the need to be held like the Nintendo DS. Sadly there is only 4GB of internal memory so you really have to pick and choose what you want to store on this device.

Perhaps the best part of this device is the price, just $161 will beat out just about any PMP. With plenty of features that beat out many other music players such as extensive audio and video formats, text to speech capabilities, and integrated FM tuning make the Muse G11 a real contender against the iPod Touch.

Android phones are starting to slowly come out of the woodwork with no official production ready models being announced yet. However there is an event in London involving HTC on May 6th, a company that vowed to release the first Android phone. They are also known for making some of the best Windows Mobile handsets that are on the market. So the question is, how does Microsoft feel about this, and more specifically, how will manufacturers like HTC keep the peace within their own companies?

It just wouldn’t make sense for mobile phone manufacturers like HTC to make the exact same phone twice just offering your choice of Android or Windows Mobile, it would kind of be nice, but exclusive handsets tipped to one OS or the other are what really moves units. For example, would the XPERIA X1 be such a big deal if it wasn’t running the next generation of Windows Mobile software? Maybe, but I’d guess not.

At the same time, the HTC Dream, when its released, will likely be the pinnacle of HTC’s design and manufacturing capabilities, but will never officially see the Windows Mobile OS on its precious little ROM chips. So, how does that make Microsoft feel that occasionally, their top manufacturers are going to choose to put and open source mobile OS on their phones instead of opting to install Windows Mobile on the device?

Personally I could care less if Windows Mobile got any more attention until the release a completely new version of the mobile OS that isn’t complete shite, however, my personal opinion matters little. So, do you the readers think that Microsoft will stop working with vendors that manufacture Android handsets, or if they will Coexist peacefully in natural harmony together? Lastly, how many of you would like to see an OS option on the mobile handset purchases negating the need to choose a phone based on OS instead of features?

The build number is 5A240d, Vincent has been running the second version of the beta for a couple of weeks and he said he immediately noticed a major improvement in system stability after upgrading to this latest firmware.

New enhancements include being able to save images from safari as well as the ability to search your contacts. They also apparently fixed a lot of the bugs that were found in the second beta release.

There are also some other new features included such as more settings for your calendar and a lot of new mail settings. Vincent is apparently also toying around with PWNAGE with the iPhone Dev Team reporting that these days cracking the latest firmware is as simple as doing “a simple byte search”. So, it’s nice to see things moving along in both the official and unofficial iPhone development worlds.

But building that same tech directly into a t-shirt is a new one.

Sure enough it’s been don’t though, and so long as you fit into a shirt ranging from sizes small through XL and have $40 plus shipping and taxes, you can have one. You can program up to 6 messages on it too.

The first message can be up to 512 characters, all subsequent messages have to be 256 characters or less. Personally, if I had one, lets just say I could come up with a lot of things better than “Hello” to say on it.
