Grandfather of Artificial Intelligence John McCarthy passes away

John McCarthy didn't single-handedly invent what we now know widely as Artificial Intelligence, aka robot brains, but he did coin the term back in 1956 and is certainly one of the founders of the A.I. research field. Not only this, McCarthy was also a professor at Stanford University and a PhD in mathematics. The creator of the programming language Lisp passed away this week at the ripe old age of no less than 84 years. Read The Full Story

Romo Smartphone Robot rolls onto Kickstarter

We like robots around these parts and one of the latest little bots to surface is called Romo. As you can see in the photos, the little bot has a smartphone on top of it. That smartphone controls the robot and gives it the face of what appears to be the creature from Cut the Rope. Romo will officially work with the iPhone and the iPod touch. Read The Full Story

Alpha Dog robot is just as creepy as Big Dog robot

One of the things that places a limit on how far a military patrol can roam is the amount of gear like food, water, and ammo they can carry with them. The military is working on getting some devices like robots into the field that will be able to carry packs and supplies for soldiers over any terrain. A company called Boston Dynamics has previously unveiled the Big Dog four-legged robot that was sufficiently creepy. Read The Full Story

iRobot Seaglider unmanned robot gets updated

Anytime I hear the iRobot name I always think about the line of robot vacuum cleaners for the home. iRobot makes a lot more than just vacuum cleaners though. The company has announced that it has updated its Seaglider unmanned underwater vehicle. The photo here of the Seaglider is the previous version; images of the new updated robot are not available at the time of writing. If you're a lover of either Mario Brothers or the Legend of Zelda, you're in for a tiny bit of a treat. There's an art show that goes on every year around this time going by the name iam8bit, this year going by the name SUPER iam8bit. This show features over 100 artists showing off works of all mediums from electronic to flat out paint covering 80's video games in their own loving way. The video you're about to see shows a set of roombas with hats commissioned by the iam8bit core team and fabricated by artist/designer Kelice Penney. Cool beans! Read The Full Story

Remote controlled cars have come a long way in just a few short decades, and here in Orbotix’ Sphero we’ve got the new benchmark for awesome. This device is indeed a sphere with bright lovely lights inside of it that can be controlled with a variety of smartphone-based apps that you can run on either your iPhone or your Android handset. And what’s mot than that, you can use your iPad, your iPod Touch, and essentially any variety of Android device to make this ball go – all you need are the official apps and bluetooth connectivity. What we got to see this week, courtesy of the CEO of the group that’s created this lovely device, Paul Berberian, is a hands-on experience with the near-final product in all its glory.

Java creator James Gosling ditches Google for robotics firm after less than 6 months on the job

In March of 2011, Google hired James Gosling, the father of Java for an unspecified position. We naturally assumed that Gosling was going to work on Android in some capacity. Strangely, at the time Gosling landed at Google, it and Oracle were in a legal battle over the alleged use of some Java code in Android. Gosling is no longer working at Google and the reason for leaving isn’t noted. I wonder if it had anything to do with the Google/Oracle fight over Java. Read The Full Story

Grabby robot satellite could clean up space junk

Space may look cavernously empty, but in actual fact there's a growing cloud of debris surround the Earth from previous manned and unmanned missions, progressively presenting an increasing risk to further exploration. Now scientists have come up with the space equivalent of a Roomba, only instead of sucking up junk it would grab it, glue a rocket to it, and then send it hurtling to the Earth's atmosphere where it would - so the theory goes - harmlessly burn up on re-entry. Willow Garage PR2 SE robot available for $285,000 with one arm

A few days back I talked about the MIT student that took the expensive PR2 robot and taught it how to make cookies from scratch. If you thought you would like your own cookie baking robot Willow Garage has now announced that the robot is available for the tidy sum of $200,000 with no arms apparently. Sure, the bot costs more than a nice home in many areas, but your house can’t bake cookies for you. Read The Full Story

Robots are pretty cool when they can do stuff on their own. I'm impressed to see robots that can vacuum or help people do simple things around the home. When the robot can do more complex things like make a recipe with multiple steps, I am even more impressed. Qbo robot tweaked to be a music robot with gesture recognition for control

We have talked about the cool little Qbo robot before. The little crowd sourced robot can be tweaked to do all sorts of cool stuff. Last time we mentioned the little bot it had been tweaked to recognize objects held in front of it. The bot has turned up in a new tweak that allows it to be used as a music player that will speak the name of your tracks and can be controlled with hand gestures. Read The Full Story
